laberry101: Please do not open new account on our system anymore.

Cybercriminals hacked the Gmail account of a Dubai based Indian expatriate Anil Abraham and used the account to convince bank to transfer $15,000 from his bank account in India.

When Anil contacted the Bank, he was told by the Branch Manager that the Money was transferred at his request only via email. The cybercriminals are reportedly send a signed document with the email to trick the Bank into transfer the money.

According to Emirates247 report, the money was transferred to someone named Garry Albert Frazer to Westpac bank account in New Zealand.

Anil said whoever hacked into his email id had managed to steal fianancial information and managed to use those info to write email to Bank with forged signature.

I'm still wondering how bank allowed the cyber criminal to steal the money, they usually don't allow us to transfer money via email accounts without any personal verification. As far as i know, Bank always careful when it comes to big amount of transfer - $15,000(nearly 90,0000 Rupees).

A simple Null character(0x00) after the extension can easily do the trick i.e. upload a backdoor shell as backdoor.php%00 and poof. .your defense mechanism would be bypassed.

Ways to prevent this kinda hack

1. Never accept a filename and its extension directly without having a white-list filter (jpg,jpeg,gif and png)
2. Use an algorithm to change filenames before storage. For instance, if i upload slyrox.jpg, it shou ld automatically store as dd7f7d72b88d8069a6b8a0c92edff55e_12_7_13.jpg on the server (i.e. the md5 hash of slyrox + the date of the day)
3. Uploaded directory should not have any “execute” permission (change the folder's permission)
4. Limit the file size to prevent denial of service attacks
5. Prevent from overwriting a file in case of having the same hash for both (In a situation where there are 2 same filenames being uploaded at the same time)
6. Use a virus scanner on the server (like my host Trudigit currently do). .In this case, file should be stored with a random name and without any extension on the server first, and after the virus checking, it can be renamed using the algorithm earlier mentioned

All these won't guarantee you 100% security as there is no such thing as 100% security, however, it will make you more secure.

Elxandre: elvis if you really are 14 you must be the really smart kid type.

The african mentality doesnt believe much in young people being enterpreneurs. many Africans are predominantly bitter people who would instead see your dream die than helping you out . So i wouldnt be suprised if most people out here keep slamming you, telling you to focus on your grades and all that. The basic fact is many intelligent people can actually combine school and stuff like programming except they choose to drop out on their own accord (mack).
The only thing ignorant people keep saying is "focus on getting a good grade and a'cheap' white collar job later".
But when a western 17 Yr old high school kid sells an app for $30m to yahoo it hits the frontpage! with everybody hailing him as a genius

well i'd advice you to be carefull anyway just as some guy said earlier because a lot of dubious people (ritualists et al) waiting to take advantage of people are online. So putting yourself all out on the internet is a really dangerous act for a 14 yr old (i hope you really are anyways).

A topic was pushed to the homepage yesterday titled 14-Year-Old Nigerian Bulk SMS App Developer In A Dilemma.

However somewhere along the line, he was labelled a Scammer 'cos the D.O.B. on his facebook profile read 1992.

Elvis said the DOB on his facebook page was fake but people would have none of that.

2 Nairalanders, Dualcore & Javanian then took it upon themselves to find out the truth.

They visited Elvis and posted their findings here and here.

Elvis is 100% legit and he is indeed 14years.

I aint forcing anyone to "dash" Elvis a laptop. .All I'm saying is, If you've got a freelance project, you can encourage the guy by giving him the project, pay him so his financial limitations won't kill his dream.
