How well do you love music? I’m an addict. I could listen to music all day. It’s that pleasant to my soul. I feel good. I don’t remember my worries. I pay attention to the lyrics and even browse the most favorite ones on the internet. Most radio listeners are music lovers. It’s a good source to know the latest songs. Nowadays, with the internet, it is easier to download your favourite songs. Just note the song title as well as the artiste, and then you are good to go. Music has helped a lot of people with depression as it lifts the spirit, encourages you and improves your health because of the joy and happiness it brings. A happy music connects the physical with the emotional. As a result of the heightened emotions, the responses are manifested physically as head nodding, tapping, dancing and even jumping. When you dance, you do a form of body exercise. By exercising, an internal heat is generated and you sweat some more which is good for the body. Scientists say that music can give intense pleasure by delivering chemical rewards in the brain that are equal to the joy of good food and a part of the brain, the nucleus accumbens has actually been thought to be the structure that elicited the strongest response. They say it’s important because it’s involved in forming expectations and these are expectations that could be rewarding. Music can alter the heart rate and blood pressure under some specific conditions. If you listen to rap or rock genres of music, the heart rate and mean arterial pressure are likely to go up while the converse is true if you listen to country and classical music. ( A research by Sakomoto for the Journal of sound and vibration). It’s been demonstrated that just like laughter does, joyful music causes the blood vessels to dilate improving vascular health. In another research by Professor Luciano Bernardi, M.D, a Professor of internal medicine at Pavia University, Italy, he found out that music induces a continuous dynamic and to some extent predictable changes in the cardiovascular system. Some Italian researchers work was also published in the Journal of America Heart Association where they said that music could in the future be used as a therapeutic tool for blood pressure control and rehabilitation. Music forms an important part of a gathering whether religious, political or cultural. It is hard to find anyone who does not listen to music. That is why I say that music is a mystery with still a lot to unravel. DAPO EGUNJOBI (DR) Graduate of Medicine and Surgery, University of Ibadan. |

Most of us know Nelson Mandela as the South African revolutionary and politician whose long imprisonment became a rallying cry for dismantling apartheid. We know that he went on to be elected the first black president of the Republic of South Africa in the first open election in the country’s history and that he has remained one of the most inspiring and admired men in modern history. But there’s so much more to know. Consider the following: 1. His parents didn’t name him Nelson Upon his birth on July 18, 1918, he was named Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela. He attended primary school in Qunu where his teacher gave him the name Nelson, in accordance with the tradition of giving “Christian” names to students. 2. He was a poor student Mandela was expelled from the University College of Fort Hare for his participation in a student protest. He completed his BA through the University of South Africa before attending the University of the Witwatersrand for his law degree. By his own admission, he was not a very good student and left in 1948 without graduating; he also was unable to complete a law degree that he started at the University of London . It wasn’t until his last months in prison that he obtained his undergraduate law degree. He now has more than 50 honorary degrees from international universities. 3. He traveled under an alias In 1962, he took on the alias David Motsamayi and secretly left South Africa for other parts of Africa and England to rally support for the liberation movement and the African National Congress (ANC); he received military training in Morocco and Ethiopia . 4. He was a master of disguise Forced to go underground to evade the police, Mandela disguised himself as a chauffeur, a chef and a garden boy. “I would wear the blue overalls of the fieldworker and often wore round, rimless glasses known as Mazzawati teaglasses. I had a car and I wore a chauffeur’s cap with my overalls. The pose of chauffeur was convenient because I could travel under the pretext of driving my master’s car,” he wrote in his autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom.” 5. Some of his most famous words were spoken in court In 1963, Mandela and nine others went on trial for sabotage in what became known as the Rivonia Trial, when he delivered his famous speech in which he concluded, “During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” Facing the death penalty, they were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. 6. His principles were more important than freedom He spent 27 years in prison until his release in 1990, nine days after the unbanning of the ANC. Throughout his imprisonment he had rejected at least three conditional offers of release. 7. He was deluged with ticker tape In 1990, he embarked on a world tour, visiting British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the U.S. Congress, and U.S. President George H.W. Bush. An estimated 400,000 attended a ticker tape parade through the canyons of Wall Street in his honor. 8. He loves tripe Umleqwa (farm chicken), ulusu (tripe), and amasi (sour milk) are among his favorite foods. His chef since 1992, Xoliswa Ndoyiya, published a cookbook with his favorite recipes. 9. He was a concert promoter Mandela was the driving force behind the 2003 AIDS awareness event in Cape Town called the 46664 Concert. The huge event included performances by Beyonce, Peter Gabriel, Bono, Bob Geldof and many more. The name of the concert references Mandela’s prison number. 10. His honors have no limits Mandela has received more than 695 awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize and the U.S. Congressional Medal. In addition to his honorary degrees, he has also been bestowed with honorary citizenships, organization memberships, and a large number of streets, buildings, schools and other various things have been named for him — and his influence can even be seen in Hollywood. In “The Cosby Show,” the grandchildren of Cliff and Clair Huxtable, Winnie and Nelson Tibideau, were named after Mandela and his former wife. Source: Punch Nigeria |

1. While you sleep, the body perspires for a while and then cools down as it recuperates from the whole day stress and one principle of sleeping un-clad is to allow blood to circulate smoothly. Clothes restrict blood circulation, hence shedding that artificial skin is good for stimulating the same. 2. The tight elastic bands of your pyjamas or short should be loosened for a sound comfortable sleep. 3. Medical research have shown that sleeping un-clad is good for those suffering from insomnia as it has a comforting effect on them. 4. Going un-clad will streamline and accelerate the repair process of the skin. A healthy, uninterrupted air flow will help in the process. 5. Sleeping un-clad allows the sebaceous glands to do their work best, which is sebum discharge and regeneration. This in turn helps in improving the metabolic rate of the body. 6. And for women, sleeping Unclad can be healthier for their private parts. While it’s totally normal to have yeast and bacteria down there, the warm environment can sometimes cause an overgrowth. One way to prevent infections is to “air it out”. Just don’t forget to lock your room. 7. Being too warm at night disrupts the release of melatonin and growth hormone (anti-aging) into the body. It regenerates. This is why a person looks refreshed and blooming after a long rest. Because the skin regenerates while you’re sleeping and it may not complete its cycle with clothes on. 8. Sleeping unclad helps you sleep more soundly, which will allow your levels of the stress hormone cortisol to decrease as you rest, keeping your energy and hunger levels in check. 9. And of course, this is also beneficial to married couples as sleeping un-clad encourages sexier relationships. Isn’t it nice to lay skin-to- skin at night with your wife/husband? |

You shouldn’t be surprised anymore; its a yearly thing. The Administration Of Unilorin has yet again released a list which comprises of both male and female, 44 students expelled with their pictures hung around all the notice board in the school.. The school Administration said the reason for this is ‘general misconduct’ which is the term used for offences like exam malpractice, inappropriate dressing or failure to wear the school ID card, This annual expulsion has been nicknamed by Unilorites as 20+ man list. A friend of mine told me 30 of them are supposed to graduate this year, this is sad but also serves as a lesson to the new incoming students.. PROBITRAS DOCTRINA..

There are pills and exercises on the market today that claim to erase belly fat effortlessly. However, changes in a person’s lifestyle are a more direct and more effective approach to eliminating the problem. Excessive belly fat increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and even Alzheimer’s disease. Here are 5 of the most common causes of belly fat. 1. Drinking Too Much Alcohol “Beer belly” is the common term for excess fat that has accumulated due to drinking a lot of alcohol on a regular basis. Beer isn’t the only culprit, though. Contrary to the specific term, drinking an excessive amount of any alcoholic beverage can cause beer belly. (Except wine, according to research.) Alcohol contains nothingbut empty calories that are stored in the stomach area. 2. Eating Too Many Bad Carbohydrates There are good carbs and there are bad carbs. Eating unrefined carbs like fruit, legumes, vegetables and whole grains is good for you, and helps in weight control. Eating biscuits, cakes, donuts, white bread and other refined carbs does the opposite. Eat too many of these carbs and a person’s insulin level will rise. Their metabolism will slow down, and the excess sugar the body can’t use will be stored as belly fat. 3. Stress Overload Too much stress has many negative impacts on the body. Stress causes the body to switch into survival mode. One way the body ensures its survival is by storing more fat so starvation doesn’t occur if there’s no food eaten. Stress also causes the body to produce excessive amounts of cortisol. This hormone moves stored fat to the abdomen area and creates belly fat. According to a study by the Psychology Department at Yale University, women (in particular) who had a higher amount of belly fat were more negative, and lived with higher levels of stress. 4. Genetics This cause of belly fat may be the toughest one to hear, because it entails not really being able to do all that much to prevent it. Genetics play a role in deciding where the fat distribution goes in your body, and it practically relates to two different body types. Either you are apple- shaped or pear-shaped. If you are pear-shaped, then the fat generally accumulates in your lower areas like your fanny. If you are apple-shaped, then your body has the tendency of storing fat around your midsection, thus leading to belly fat. 5. Sedentary Lifestyle A sedentary lifestyle is defined as one in which a person fails to exercise regularly, or fails to get any exercise at all. The biggest problem with a sedentary lifestyle is that it can increase your chances of developing serious health conditions, which are all somewhat preventable. If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, you are raising your chances of dying younger, yet you can easily avoid this by simply moving more and exercising regularly. It commonly consists of the practice of sitting on the couch and watching too much TV. Such a lifestyle is not limited just to TV watching; it also involves reading too much or using the computer too much. Basically, if you are not moving enough, it is sedentary. |
Women in rural areas often have their babies with the light of a dim torch light, increasing the chances of maternal and infant deaths, as the rural areas lack electricity to aid the safe delivery of a child and protect the life of the mother. Deborah Ezra, a member of the Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, lamented the poor situation under which the women in rural areas have their newborns and the dire conditions under which the midwives work. At the celebration of the International Midwives Day on Monday at the Rockview Royal Hotel in Wuse 2, Abuja, Ms. Ezra said on too many occasions she handled deliveries using the torch light of a mobile phone. She listed power supply as one of the various major challenges in her work as a mid wife in various rural areas where she has been posted to serve. Mrs. Ezra called on government at all levels to invest in midwives as a frontline to achieving the Millennium Development Goal 4 and 5, which are to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health respectively by 2015. Nigeria currently has one of the highest cases of maternal mortality in the world with about 142 deaths daily according to official statistics. The country leader of an international nongovernmental organisation that promotes s*xual and reproductive health rights of women, Ipas- Nigeria, Ejike Obi, praised midwives and encouraged them to key into family planning programs in the country stating that Nigeria still depends on midwives to improve maternal, child and newborn health in the country. Representing Nigeria Urban Reproductive Health Initiative, Mojushoola Odeku, urged midwives to brush up on family planning and counseling. She also advised that young midwives seek retired midwives to learn from their wealth of experience. Ms. Odeku said family planning is the bedrock of midwifery and it helps to reduce child birth by 25 percent. The Minister of Health, Mohammed Pate, who attended the event, said his ministry will do all it can “to ensure that the quality of health care is improved in the country”. He called on midwives in the country to have passion for the job they do. Mr. Pate encouraged women to take up the profession of midwifery and develop interest in maternal advocacy at all levels. The President of NANNM, Abdulrafiu Adeniji, called on the Federal Government to address the challenges faced by midwives in carrying out their duties especially in rural areas.
