All you have to do is just little research about the cash crop in Africa and if it has benefited farms in anyway.

The day you stop producing what you can’t eat that the day you become poorer.

Take cocoa for example %90-95 of the farmers in Africa are poor why ?

Many African farmers grow cash crops (like cocoa, coffee, cotton, or cashew), but many of them are still poor. The main reason is that they usually earn only a small part of the final value of the crop. Here are the key reasons:

1. Farmers sell raw products (low value)

Most African farmers sell their crops in raw form.

Example with cocoa:

So the big profits go to processors and brands, not the farmers.

2. Middlemen take a large share

Between the farmer and the final buyer, there are often many middlemen:

• international traders

Each one takes a cut of the profit, leaving the farmer with less.

3. Global prices are controlled outside Africa

Prices for crops like cocoa, coffee, and cotton are often set in international commodity markets.

That means:
• If the global price falls, farmers earn less.
• Farmers cannot control the price of what they grow.
4. Small farms and low productivity

Most African farmers are smallholder farmers (very small farms).

They often lack:
• modern equipment
• good fertilizer
• irrigation
• access to loans

Because of this, their production is lower, which means lower income.

5. Poor infrastructure

In many areas there are problems like:
• bad roads
• limited electricity
• poor storage

Farmers may be forced to sell quickly at low prices because crops can spoil or transport is difficult.

6. Debt and high farming costs

Farmers sometimes borrow money to buy:
• seeds
• fertilizer
• pesticides

If the harvest price is low, they may end the season with little or no profit.
