When Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s Vice President and Presidential Flag bearer of the Action Congress Party, left the country a few days after his declaration to contest the Presidency, many political watchers saw it as a smooth move to flee prosecution; some saw it as a move to secure more grounds internationally and prepare for an onslaught against President Obasanjo; some insist that the Vice President was on vacation as he claimed.

Governor Bafarawa of Sokoto adopted as DPP presidential candidate

Governor Attahiru Bafawara of Sokoto State this afternoon at the Eagle square Abuja was adopted as the Democratic Peoples Party Presidential flagbearer for the 2007 Presidential elections.

Governor Attahiru Bafawara who until recently was a pillar of the ANPP, was adopted as a consensus candidate of the DPP by its stakeholders. As at press time the convention was still ongoing.

With the adoption of Governor Bafawara as a presidential candidate, the stage is set for a battle royal between the trio of Bafarawa, Yar’adua and Buhari. These three northern sons will slug it out at the general elections in 2007 and this is sure to share the northern block votes.

Governor Attahiru Bafawara is a two term governor of Sokoto State.

The Rivers State government was yesterday under tension with the arrest of the Speaker of the Rivers State house of assembly and PDP gubernatorial candidate Hon Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.


Hon Rotimi’s arrest came on the heels of the investigation into the ownership of Arik air and the misuse of N100 billion state funds. According to our sources Hon Rotimi Amaechi had been warned of the impending arrest but disregarded calls by his hench men to go into hiding. Our source in a telephone interview with NigerianInsider.com, said “Hon Rotimi said the rumours of his impending arrest was from Prince Uche Secondus, Rivers State PDP chairman and would not take it to heart”.
