Starting her career as a secretary in a bank in the mid 1970s, Alakija, 62, then studied fashion in London and returned to Nigeria to start a label, Supreme Stitches. But her biggest break came in oil. In 1993, her company, Famfa Oil, was awarded an oil prospecting license, which later became OML 127, one of the country’s most prolific oil blocks, by then-president Ibrahim Babangida. The company owned a 60 per cent stake in the block until 2000 when the Nigerian government unconstitutionally acquired a 50 per cent interest without duly compensating Alakija or Famda Oil. In May 2012, Alakija, a married mother-of- four, challenged the acquisition and the Nigerian Supreme Court reinstated the 50 per cent stake to her company. She also has a charity called the Rose of Sharon foundation that helps widows and orphans by empowering them through scholarships and business grants. Forbes magazine had estimated Alakija’s fortune at $600 million, as of November 2012, but the magazine’s editor-in-chief Uzodinma Iweala said his researchers were ‘closer to the ground.’ They noted that Brazilian oil company, Petrobas, was looking to sell its 8 per cent stake in OML 127 for $1.5- $2.5 billion, and extrapolated that if they managed to sell it for $1 billion, Alakija’s 60 per cent stake would be worth at least $7.3 billion. Iweala claims this and other estimates included in the report are actually ‘on the conservative side’ and said the magazine expect to unearth more African billionaires shortly. The overall richest African is Nigerian manufacturer Aliko Dangote who is worth $20.2 billion. Twenty Nigerians are listed in total. According to Forbes, Oprah Winfrey is worth $2.9 billion. www.informationng.com/2013/10/nigerian-female-billionaire-defeats-oprah-winfrey-to-become-richest-black-woman-in-the-world.html

The teachers’ is over 90 days. Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) are also on strike. The professionals are blaming the government for failing to meet up with the agreement reached with them. Jonathan promised to end the strike when he received the leaders of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), led by its President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele. Presidential spokesman Dr. Reuben Abati, in a statement on the meeting which reporters were prevented from covering, said the President promised to do his all to resolve all issues that caused disputes. He said the government attached great importance to the medical and educational sectors. He said: “I believe that we must manage both sectors in such a way that nobody engaged in them will think of going on strike again. “We will continue to proactively evolve measures that will help us to permanently overcome the problems that lead to strikes by health and education professionals,” he added. To facilitate rapid establishment of more centres of medical excellence in the country, President Jonathan pledged that the Federal Government would fully explore the option of creating a special intervention fund. According to him, the recommendation of a special fund that will give low interest loans for the establishment of state-of-the-art medical facilities is a creative idea that will receive appropriate consideration from the government. He said: “We are committed to working with professionals and the private sector to establish better medical facilities in the country and reduce the number of Nigerians who have to go abroad annually for medical reasons.” Jonathan also assured the doctors that his administration would create the right conditions to enable doctors to stay at home and avail Nigerians of their acknowledged skills and expertise instead of migrating to other countries. He said his administration was determined to correct the anomaly of Nigeria being so strong in human capacity in medicine, with about 25,000 Nigerian medical consultants currently practising in the United States , as confirmed to him by President Barack Obama; and yet being unable to treat many of its sick people in its own hospitals. Jonathan said: “There is clearly a missing link somewhere and we will do everything possible to fix it. We will continue to work with professional bodies and all stakeholders to come up with more policies and actions that will help us overcome current challenges in our medical sector. “We will work with the National Assembly to ensure the quick passage of the National Health Bill. We will take prompt action to reconstitute the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. We will also consider recommendations for the establishment of the Office of Surgeon-General of the Federation.” “I believe that we must always do what is best for our country. We will review all the other issues you have raised and act accordingly. When things are done properly, issues of welfare and remuneration in the health sector will disappear,” the President said. Dr. Enabulele assured President Jonathan of NMA’s support for his administration’s agenda. He called for urgent reconstitution of the main regulatory body in the health sector, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria which was dissolved in 2011. The NMA President also called for faster action on the passage of the National Health Bill and other issues related to the creation of a more conducive operating environment for doctors and other healthcare professionals such as remuneration, welfare and training. The President was decorated with the emblem of the NMA by Prof. Umaru Shehu. The NMA delegation included the Emir of Tsonga, Dr. Haliru Yahaya, the NMA Second Vice-President, Dr. Uche Ojinmah and the NMA Secretary-General, Dr. Akpufuoma Pemu. www.informationng.com/2013/10/ASUU-strike-will-be-over-soon-jonathan-declares.html

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, yesterday, took a swipe at the incumbent Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, describing her as being unnecessarily petty in the handling of issues relating to the industry. Responding to remarks made by Oduah against him, Fani-Kayode said that the incumbent Aviation minister and not him was the one who should bury her head in shame over the shambolic handling of the industry since her appointment. Speaking yesterday at the opening ceremony of the African Regional Conference of Civil Aviation Navigation Organisation, CANSO, in Abuja, Oduah had dismissed Fani-Kayode over his ignorance, adding that his comments on the aviation sector conveyed the impression that he was under an unnatural influence. She also stated that working with CANSO over the years had been fulfilling and enriching. “The nation has had its fair share of challenges in the aviation sector but has adopted an attitude of refusing to relent in moving forward as a key strategy for improvement in the sector.” According to her, “Aviation which is one of the drivers of the economy has ensured that we achieve double digit economic growth.” Fani-Kayode, however said that the remarks by the minister against him were uncalled for, malicious and petty. “She reportedly said that I should bow my head in shame, suggested that I was “speaking out of context” in my essay where I called for her resignation and that I spoke under some “influence of something or other,”” he said. “My advice and counsel to her is to grow up and stop being petty. She is meant to talk like someone who befits her office and not like a market woman. “I do not like joining issues with women publicly which is why I was very gentle with her in my essay though I made my point. But this particular woman is endangering the lives of our people with her incompetence and insensitivity and we cannot just keep quiet. “This is a woman under whose watch almost 200 people have been killed as Aviation Minister and instead of focusing on how to save lives her obsession has become smearing and abusing Femi Fani-Kayode. “This is a woman who only yesterday told Nigerians that ‘accidents are inevitable’ and that they were ‘acts of God.’ This is a woman who thinks more about how her headscarf looks, her jewellery and the jewellery of others more than she does about protecting Nigerian air travellers. “If anyone should bury her head in shame it is her and not me. After just under 200 of our fellow citizens have been killed under her watch instead of abusing her critics and those of us that have expressed our concern and offered our advise she should be seeking repentance from God and tendering her resignation. “She should be attempting to encourage the Nigerian people and assuage their fears rather than indulging in petty and cheap sideshots and a futile press war. “Instead of comforting the families of those that were lost she is opening her mouth and abusing me. What a shame. Under her tenure we have beautiful terminals but deadly and blood-soaked skies. Our skies have become a death trap because she really doesn’t care. “My advice to her is to shut up, get serious and focus on doing her job rather than attempting to smear me with her filthy lies and malicious innuendos. “I raised some serious issues in that essay that was clearly above her education level and I avoided personal insults. “That is what civilised people do. She should learn from that and address the issues that were raised rather than spend her time trying to kill the messenger. When someone says that God is the author of fatal crashes you know that it is not the same God that we worship as that person. “It is the devil that causes accidents and kills people and not God. You can say that a fatal accident is an act of God only if the devil is your god. “When I speak and write I am under the influence of one thing and one thing alone- the Spirit of the Living God who sees through her and who knows her for what she is. “She is the one that is under the influence of one thing or the other and not me. She is the one whose hands are filled with blood. She is the one that must bury her head in shame and no-one else. I will pray for her because she needs it and I will pray for Nigeria too. May God deliver us from these people,” Fani- Kayode added. www.informationng.com/2013/10/stop-talking-like-a-market-woman-fani-kayode-replies-oduah-as-war-of-words-continue.html

President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed poverty as responsible for the spate of terror attacks that has bedeviled some sections of the Northern part of the country. Speaking in an interview on Arise Television on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last week, Jonathan disagreed with the notion that terrorism is driven by poverty. According to him, the surface-to-air missiles and other sophisticated deadly weapons used in the terror attacks in the country were not weapons poor people have the capacity to acquire. To further buttress his position, the president cited the instance of the first Nigerian involved in an attempted suicide on an American jetliner in 2010, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, whom the president said came from one of the richest families in the north. He also cited the case of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC, which were masterminded by Osama bin Laden who also came from a very wealthy family. He admitted that members of terrorist cells could take advantage of poverty to attract recruits, but insisted that poverty was not the root cause of terrorism in Nigeria and other parts of the world. “Petty crimes can be blamed on poverty, but definitely not terrorism. I do not agree with anyone who says that is the cause of terrorism,” he said. The president also said incidents such as armed robberies, kidnappings and other forms of petty crimes were familiar types of crimes known to Nigerians in the past, adding that it was Nigeria’s lack of experience in dealing with terrorism that had robbed it of developing a security architecture to combat terrorism. “However, we have been forced to develop our security architecture to deal with the menace we find in our midst today and are doing everything to stem the spread and capacity of terrorists to target innocent Nigerians. “In this drive, we are getting some assistance from the US, France and other countries,” Jonathan said. Just like he committed himself to a statement that has remained a talking point ever since he said the Islamist sect Boko Haram had infiltrated his government, Jonathan accused some unnamed wealthy people of being behind the current attacks in some parts of the north. However, he assured Nigerians that his government was building the capacity of the armed forces through the gathering of intelligence to stabilise the country because military confrontation would not stop the attacks and called for the support of the rest of the world, adding; “A terror attack anywhere in the world is an attack on all of us.” www.informationng.com/2013/10/poverty-not-responsible-for-terrorism-president-jonathan.html

The criticism just keeps pouring in, i’m so feeling sorry for Jim Iyke right now. Even fellow actors and actresses in the industry have openly blasted the actor. Up to the extent that even Nigerian soft P0*n actress, Afrocandy took to her Facebook page to voice out her opinion about the matter. “Na waah for our actors, Jym Ike took his stunt to the alter. I wonder how much he got paid for this ‘movie’. Nevertheless, he is a very good actor tho” I have a very strong feeling that Jim Iyke has had about enough and will soon clap back at all his critics, i’m patiently sitting and waiting for the cup to overflow.

Following the killing of 40 students in a terrorist attack on College of Agriculture, Gujba, Yobe State, where students were shot dead in their dormitory, authorities are taking measures to improve security around schools, including stepping up patrols and putting armed soldiers outside them and guarding school buses. The move, according to government sources on Monday, is aimed at restoring confidence in the Western style schools that have seen scenes of bloody massacres by Boko Haram militants who say western education is sin. According to a presidency source, President Goodluck Jonathan met senior security aides, Sunday, to discuss how to respond to the latest deadly shift in tactics by the insurgents. “At the meeting, they decided to provide special security cover for schools in the North-East and some other places prone to possible attacks. “The president is not happy. He directed security chiefs to work out a new strategy so this doesn’t happen again,” the source said. Mohammed Lamin, Yobe State Commissioner for Lower Education, speaking on the security measures noted; “For now, the state government has directed all round security surveillance on all schools across the state”. He added that “the security agencies need to step up their operations to protect lives and property.” www.informationng.com/2013/10/yobe-massacre-were-ready-to-assist-fg-bring-boko-haram-scourge-to-an-end-says-tinubu.html

Former Lagos State governor and frontline opposition figure, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday decried the deadly attacks on hapless Nigerians following the gruesome murder of over 60 students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba, in Yobe State by suspected Boko Haram elements on Sunday. In a statement from his media office, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain lamented that “Nigeria is under attack.” The statement, which is a sequel to a letter he personally wrote to Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, said: “As a father and leader, I am deeply saddened by the senseless killings of innocent students. It is unacceptable and indefensible under any guise. It is an act that must be punished. “The recent carnage in Borno State and now at the College of Agriculture in Yobe reminds us of the sinister nature of the enemy our nation now faces. “There should be no mistake at this sombre moment. Those who launched these attacks did not launch them at the people they killed. They knew not the names of their victims or who they were. “The dead were just unfortunate souls who happened to be close enough to murder. The real targets of these massacres were our nation, society and any semblance of civilized, modern life. Nigeria is under attack and the earlier those in charge realised this, the quicker the situation can be arrested. In terms of security, the present is not safe, neither is the future secured. “The killings at the College of Agriculture were particularly jarring. Under cover of darkness, evil crept unto a campus of higher learning, turning it into a place of slaughter. “These murderers snatched the lives of young people who were just entering the fullness of life. The attackers fell upon them so early that many of the students were still in bed. “These young people only wanted an education to improve their future and that of the nation. They were armed only with this desire and with the tools of students. They had done no one any harm. “Yet, their attackers executed them in the cruelest fashion. This is terror in its basest form. By this act, the crazed and armed menace we face tells us that attending school, attempting to get an education, is now a capital offence. Those guilty of seeking to learn are to be executed. “This is a dire affront to fundamental humanity. It is also a frontal attack on our quest for economic development and social progress. Those that did this seek to cast a veil of fear and ignorance over Nigeria. We must remain steadfast in the belief that enlightenment and progress is best for our people. “These killers want us to hide in the shadow of fear and live in the cave of ignorance. We must be brave enough to tell them “no.” No matter how they try to frighten us, we shall walk in the light of learning, justice, hope and tolerance, unity and progress. “What we face is nothing less than a contest for the soul of the nation. We dare not lose the contest. These young people died just because they wanted to learn and live better. We can’t allow their deaths to be in vain. “Thus, we must rededicate ourselves that all of our children shall learn and live better because of the education they shall receive. “We must look beyond the deaths and spilled blood of these innocent children. In times like these, it is easy to give up and recede into our fears. Yet, we must be of good courage. We must not give way to sorrow or despair. We must forge ahead with our best plans and preparations for the people.” Tinubu, who called on the FG to focus on making society better, said the advice was not to score political points, adding that the attackers ultimate aim is to cripple the educational system in the north and if they are not stopped they will succeed. “They intend to make Nigeria desolate” he said, noting that “In their warped minds, this will be paradise. Paradise for them will be purgatory for the rest of us.” Brimming with optimism that the country will overcome what he termed as “this pestilence”, Tinubu added that justice shall prevail just as every Nigerian must put hands on deck to build the nation. “We must be of good courage. We cannot allow their violence to dictate the path that we must go. They see a nation they want to destroy. I see a nation we should build. We shall win. “They may have guns and terror. But they lack the moral force to stop us from building the nation we seek. We have justice and right. We shall win”, he maintained. Wondering how long the senseless killings will last and how many lives would have been lost before this evil is halted, Tinubu challenged the federal government to become more proactive in developing a comprehensive law enforcement, intelligence-gathering and economic incentives strategy to checkmate the plague. “On such a grave matter of national security, there is no partisanship. We are all Nigerians. We stand ready to help in this fight. We await the call of the Federal Government to do so,” the former governor said. He extended his condolences to the government and people of Yobe State especially families, who lost loved ones in the attack. “Your grief is heavy and thick because of the senselessness of this tragedy. But you don’t carry this grief alone. All Nigeria grieves with you. Those were our children, too” Tinubu said. www.informationng.com/2013/10/yobe-massacre-were-ready-to-assist-fg-bring-boko-haram-scourge-to-an-end-says-tinubu.html
