There are strong indications that tempers may have risen to a boiling point among members of the Police Management Team [PMT], as embattled former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC], Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Tuesday, ignored yet another directive by the authorities to appear before the Force Secretary, Mr. Udom Ekpoudom, an Assistant Inspector General of Police [AIG], for briefing. This is coming barely 24 hours after he failed to comply with a directive to report to the police force headquarters in Abuja on Monday, alongside five other senior officers who participated in the recently concluded Course 30 at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies [NIPSS], in Kuru, Plateau state. Dependable sources told Daily Sun that despite being notified of a directive to report to the Force Secretary [AIG Ekpoudom] on Tuesday, through a Deputy Commissioner of Police in his department, Ribadu did not show up and gave no explanation for his failure to do so. Although reasons for his being summoned could not be ascertained at press time, it was learnt that part of the issues was to warn him to immediately report to his new office at the Zone 5 police command headquarters in Benin-City, Edo State, where he has been redeployed as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration. Feelers from the force headquarters indicated that the die appears to have been cast as the police high command may have resolved to take a decisive action against the Adamawa state-born former anti-graft czar for alleged gross indiscipline and disobedience to lawful orders. Consequently, he is to be handed additional two queries in the next few days while awaiting the arrival of the Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, who is currently outside the country on an official engagement. If eventually implemented, Ribadu would have bagged five queries within a month. Police Force Public Relations Officer, Agberebi Akpoebi, could not be reached for comments as repeated calls put through his mobile phone were not responded, but a senior officer who would not want his name in print confirmed the development. "Yes, it is true that Ribadu was asked to report to the Force Secretary today [Tuesday], but as usual, he flagrantly disobeyed the directive. Since the Police is a disciplined Force, appropriate disciplinary action must be taken against him. As things stand, he would be issued with two fresh queries for not showing up on Monday and Tuesday as directed," he told our reporter on telephone. When Daily Sun sought to know the permissible number of queries to be issued an officer to warrant a summary dismissal from service, he simply retorted: "Even one query is enough for dismissal," adding that "with Ribadu’s recalcitrance even after being served with three queries in quick succession, and two more to follow perhaps within this week, it is quite obvious he has resolved to damn the consequences and quit the police force." http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2008/nov/26/national-26-11-2008-002.htm

VANGUARD’S impressionistic writer and author of the Nigerian bestseller-Blood On the Niger, Emma Okocha has formally declared his candidacy for the position of the President General of Ohaneze Ndilgbo. In a press release, Chicago-based nuclear physicist, Professor Akujieze, disclosed that the Ndiigbo in the Diaspora have decided to pull their resources together to directly impact Igboland. “We looked around and after all our sad experiences dealing with all sorts of people at home and in Nigeria; the Igbos in Diaspora chose an incorruptible soul and an unrepentant Igbo. He is not a businessman. He is not a rich man but does not bow to money. He has been in government and never gave any contract to his friends or himself. As the Director Delta Sports he managed to save over 300 million naira for Delta State as he miraculously programmed the First Delta Sports Festival in 1977, under a total budget of three million naira. For seven years before him the state could not run a sports festival because the commissioners before him were budgeting for the same state sports festival some three hundred and fifty millions. His thrifty and disciplined fiscal management were foreign. Akujieze called on every Igbo to do their research on the declared candidates. Okocha according to the Ijeoma Ijeawele was a Councilor who was offered a Local Government stall on Nnebisi Road Asaba. He thanked his Local Government Lady Chairman advising her to hand over the stalls to registered traders. http://www.vanguardngr.com/content/view/22705/45/ |
A KILLER paracetamol teething mixture has crept into the Nigerian market, snuffing life out of 25 children and leaving scores hospitalised nationwide. It was a sad Professor Dora Akunyili, Driector-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) who told newsmen yesterday that of the 25 deaths, 15 died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); eight at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria , and two died at the University College Hospital (UCH) after taking paracetamol teething mixture, “My Pikin”. The Agency has, however, shut the defaulting company located at 1-5 Olugbo Close, Shasha Road, Akowonjo, Lagos and directed the re-screening of all brands of paracetamol syrup nationwide. Akunyili further explained that investigations revealed that the affected children, below three years of age, were said to be down with fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and were unable to pass urine for several days. Reeling out some decisive regulatory measures to safeguard the lives of millions of innocent and unsuspecting children, Akunyili who was last week screened by the Senate for a ministerial appointment warned: “All medicine outlets, stores, clinics and hospitals are advised to immediately withdraw from circulation all batches of “My Pikin” teething mixture and surrender them to the nearest NAFDAC office as failure to do so will attract severe sanction. According to her; “the drugs were administered to the children in their various homes and the children had earlier attended various hospitals and clinics in their areas. It was when their conditions worsened that they came to the ABUTH Zaria either on referral or on their own. It was in the course of our investigation in Zaria at 8:30 a.m. yesterday we received unconfirmed reports that a similar situation was being experienced in UCH and LUTH. NAFDAC, simultaneously, went to both hospitals within an hour. At both sites, our fears were confirmed. “The affected batch of the medicine most of the patients in Kaduna used is Batch 02008, manufactured October 2008 and expiring November 2011,” she said. Akunyili who enjoined mothers to henceforth stop the use of “My Pikin” teething mixture and report any suspected case to the agency for appropriate action, said: “This is a public health emergency that requires the collective action, collaboration and cooperation of all health care providers, the media and general public in averting the looming danger facing millions of our innocent children and parents.” Akunyili announced that already, the agency has directed all NAFDAC officers nationwide to mop up all batches of the offending drug from circulation. She appealed to all health institutions and organisation who are supposed to work in concert for the benefit of the Nigerian people to complement each other and not to allow competitiveness and rancour, destroy the nation’s health system. http://www.vanguardngr.com/content/view/22722/41/ |
Stakeholders and financial institutions in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector have already started counting their loses following the surprise closure by the Lagos state government of the sprawling Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos last week. The loses were estimated at over N1billion. Daily Sun gathered that the closure was part of the state government’s drive to enhance its internal generated revenue and ensure a healthy business environment . The closure of the market on a Thursday which incidentally was a market sanitation day, Daily Sun gathered, was planned by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement unit popularly known as Task force to enforce appropriate legislations on revenue and cleanliness . The Public Relations Officer of the Task Force, Mr. Ayotunde Hundogan noted that it became expedient for Computer Village to be put under lock and key because the market had continually evaded payment of necessary taxes. “It is not fair that a market of this magnitude will be found wanting over tax and other offences. For instance, it is not only tax that Computer Village dealers evaded, the market itself has become an environmental nuisance with street traders and dirt all over the place. There is a standard expected in every market and if such a market is not living up to expectation, the government will be forced to take some actions as a deterrent to others”. Chairperson of the unit, Superintendent of Police, Bayo Sulaimon added that once the dealers cooperate with the government, the market would be reopened. “All the government is asking for is that they should live up to their civic responsibilities and nothing short of that. Before we know it, the market will be reopened”. It would be recalled that last week Thursday, the Fashola Administration locked up Computer Village over three offences ranging from Personal Income tax, environmental nuisance and accumulated debt of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA). As early as 6 A.M that day, all the four entrances leading to the Village were put under lock and key by law enforcements agents while fierce looking security agents and the police numbering 25 manned each entrance with an armour tank each. Dealers, traders as well as officials of the six banks and three microfinance institutions within the village were prevented from gaining entrance into the village. Although, some bank managers tried to persuade one of the men manning the entrance to allow them into the village but all their pleas were ignored. The dealers in a bid to defend themselves claimed that no letter or information was passed down to them. That most of them came to for their normal businesses only to discover that they could not gain entrance into the premises. This was even as they blamed the Computer and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria, (CAPDAN) the umbrella body of the dealers, for not being a strong enough union. Nevertheless, an executive member of CAPDAN, Mr.Sunday told Daily Sun that it was the Ministry of Internal Revenue (IRS) that locked up the market, saying that, “It is no big deal; many other notable places have been shut down. Daily Sun gathered that government was asking for N700 million as taxes from the market because the property owners converted residential buildings to commercial purposes . This was in addition to other conditions to be met before the market could be reopened. And according to reliable sources, the government said it was not ready to let up as it was bent on raking in every kobo due to it as tax. However, some stakeholders have expressed concern that the N700 million being asked for by the government from property owners might have adverse effects on tenants because property owners might be forced to hike rents. As at Friday last week, many dealers and traders were at Access bank trying to pay their personal income tax while containers and other environmental nuisances were being demolished by the government to the consternation of their owners. Daily Sun observed that the fierce looking security agents guarding the task force officials prevented those affected from taking laws into their hands and few of them who were helpless just broke down in tears. Some were seen in groups discussing the problem while others went to the Ogunbiyi Community Development Association (CDA) secretariat for consultations with their leaders. Secretary to the Ogunbiyi CDA, Barr.Mopelola Ogunajo explained to Daily Sun that the shut down was a joint action by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Ministry of Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement and Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA). Said she: “IRS recently informed us that they have been talking to CAPDAN since two weeks ago over tax; apparently nothing was communicated to anyone of us. Moreover, the CDA keep saying that things like that should be brought to us while LAWMA leveraged on that opportunity too. When we met some weeks back in LAWMA office with CAPDAN, they appealed that we should allow them be in charge until end of December, and we accepted. Of course, CAPDAN have been collecting LAWMA’s money without remitting it . CDA was forced to call stakeholders to address this issue and other future occurrence because we cannot just fold our hands. A situation like this needs drastic action.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/suntech/2008/nov/26/suntech-26-11-2008-001.htm
