Education / Work Out Your Potential by soanl: 7:04am On Aug 16, 2019
Potential is said to be hidden capabilities, latent or reserved power.
Did you know that everyone was born with one or more potentials? Did you also know that potential untapped remains dormant?
Having great potentials WITHIN us do not guarantee achievements but working it out. It is saddening that many would buried with their talents, and abilities when they die; you don’t want to be one of them.
We have to cultivate, nurture, and make use of our talents, potentials, and abilities.
“Some dream of worthy accomplishments, while others stay awake and do them.” – Jim Michaels

Education / Teachers Advised To Stop Imposing Knowledge On Pupils by soanl: 9:11pm On Jan 10, 2019
Tare Youdeowei

Teachers in the country have been advised to stop imposing what they know on pupils and embrace the teaching method of harvesting pupils’ innate gifts to move society forward.

The call was made by the Governor, Grange Governing Council and Head of School at the Toddler Tree School & Educational Consultants, Mrs Fadekemi Olumide-Aluko, in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Monday, where she urged teachers to teach pupils self-learn, draw out conclusions and develop values while still allowing their spirits to thrive.

Imploring teachers to find the patience to search for the specialness in every pupil, Olumide-Aluko said, “It is not so much what we are putting into the learner as what we are drawing out of him. I believe every human being is unique, with their own unmatchable set of God-given gifts, strengths, and perceived weaknesses.

“Often times, our authoritative culture gets in the way of our understanding that our primary purpose as educators is to search for that specialness within the learner and then through our approach create a gateway, an enabling environment for that gift to find its way through the forest of lack of confidence or self-doubt, challenges of family background, poverty, culture sometimes, ethnic or social prejudices. When we find it, it can then be refined, honed and allowed to shine.

“This is the true purpose of education, not just to espouse what we already know but to bring out new knowledge and values, that allow society to move forward. We must strategically plan opportunities where pupils are able to self-learn, draw out conclusions and develop values while still allowing their spirits to thrive. For education to move a nation forward, it must instruct, nurture, create deep understanding through questioning and analysis, bring forth revelation that comes from deep within. It must inspire and allow individual spirits to soar.”

Olumide-Aluko also said teachers schools should take advantage of the first six years of every child repair the value deficiencies the nation is experiencing in today’s youth.

She said, “Modern research has now confirmed, irrefutably, that the first six years of life record the highest intellectual, social and emotional development in a human being, with 92 per cent of the brain and most of the personality having been formed by age six. So, when we focus our efforts more on after this stage, whether primary, secondary or tertiary level, we would make some gains no doubt, but huge potential would have been lost if we don’t start from the beginning.

“We should take full advantage of the early years in the support of an education that can really address some of our fundamental value deficiencies that make living in Nigeria what it is today. Little wonder that in the national educational curriculum of Japan, their children are not engaged in academic work till after they are six and don’t sit any exams till age of 10.

“Rather, the main thrust of their early education is to develop good character, good manners, grit, self discipline and justice. They have figured out the values needed to move their nation forward, and they focus squarely on them in the first years of education. All comparative development indices of the world show that it is working for them, a Nigerian version of this strategy is highly recommended for us as a nation,” Olumide-Aluko said.

Business / Nigeria’s Debt Hits N22.43tn, Domestic Component 70.51% by soanl: 9:04pm On Jan 10, 2019
Nigeria’s total debt now stands at N22.43tn, data obtained from the Debt Management Office have shown.

According to the DMO, the nation’s total debt as of September 30, 2018, stood at N22.43tn.

As of June 30, 2015, the country’s total debt stood at N12.12tn. This means that within the tenure of the present administration which came to power on May 29, 2015, the country’s total debt has risen by N10.31tn or 85.06 per cent.

Of the total debt, the external component of both the Federal Government and state governments’ debts including that of the Federal Capital Territory stood at $21.59bn.

As of June 30, 2015, the external debt component of the country’s total debt stood at $10.32bn. This means that the external debt component rose by $11.27bn or 109.21 per cent.

On the other hand, the domestic debt of both the Federal Government and the subnational governments stood at N15.81tn.

Analysing the debt statistics further showed that the domestic debt of the Federal Government alone stood at N12.29tn as of September 30, 2018.

The domestic debt of the Federal Government as of June 30, 2015, stood at N8.4bn while that of the states and FCT stood at N1.69tn.

The DMO added that the debt statistics as of September 30, 2018, was only slightly different from the statistics as of June 30, 2018.

On the difference between the debt statistics of the two quarters, the DMO said, “External debt declined by 2.02 per cent to $21.59bn due largely to the redemption by Nigeria of a $500m Eurobond which matured on July 12, 2018.

“The Eurobond which was issued for a tenor of five years in 2013 was the first Eurobond maturity for Nigeria and Nigeria’s ability to repay it seamlessly boosted Nigeria’s position as a good credit in the International Capital Market.

“The domestic debt of the FGN, states and the FCT grew by 1.19 per cent from N15.63tn in June 2018 to N15.8tn in September 2018. This increase of N185bn was attributed to the FGN (N135bn) and states and FCT (N50bn).”

It added, “The combination of an increase in the level of domestic debt and a decrease in the external debt stock resulted in a slight shift in the portfolio composition.

“As of September 30, 2018, the share of domestic debt was 70.51 per cent compared to 69.83 per cent in June 2018.

“This trend is expected to be reversed in Quarter Four 2018 as the new external borrowing of N849bn (about $2.78bn) provided in the 2018 Appropriation Act is expected to be raised within the quarter.”

The current strategy of the Federal Government is to raise external debt component to 40 per cent and to raise the local debt component to 60 per cent in order to take advantage of the lower interest rate on foreign debts.

Politics / INEC Releases Seven-step Voting Procedure For 2019 General Elections by soanl: 8:57pm On Jan 10, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission has spelled out the voting procedures for the 2109 General Elections.

The election umpire wrote via its verified Twitter handle, @inecnigeria.

The following are the seven steps, as stated by INEC:
Step 1:
Upon arrival at the polling unit, joins the queue and present yourself to the INEC official (APO111) at the polling unit who will determine whether you are at the correct polling unit and check if the photograph on the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) matches your face. If satisfied, he/she will direct you to the next INEC official (APO1).

Step 2:
The official (APO1) will request for your PVC to confirm that your card is genuine and your details, using the smart card reader. He/she will ask you to place your finger on the card reader to confirm that the PVC belongs to you by ascertaining, the card reader will contains the name, photograph and finger prints of all those registered in their polling unit.

Step 3:
You will then meet the next official (APO11) who will request for your PVC to confirm that your name and details are in the voters register. Your name will be ticked and your PVC returned to you. He/ she will then apply indelible ink to the cuticle of your appropriate finger for that election to show you have been accredited to vote. (If your name is not found on the register, you will not be allowed to vote).

Step 4:
The presiding officer (PO) stamps, signs and endorses the date at the back of the Ballot Paper. The PO will roll the ballot paper inwardly with the printed side inwards and give to you. He /she will then direct you to the voting cubicle where you vote in secret.

Step 5:
You will stain your appropriate finger for the election with the ink provided then use your stained finger to mark the space or box provided on the ballot paper for your preferred candidate/party. Roll the marked ballot paper (in the manner the PO gave to
you).

Step 6:
Then leave the voting cubicle and drop the ballot paper in the ballot box in full view of people at the polling unit.

Step 7:
You will then leave the polling unit or wait if you so choose in an orderly and peaceful manner to work the process up to declaration of result.
