Well, it depends on the particular adverse effects the patient has. Since it was a day intake there may not be any drastic adverse effect except in patients with existing acute or chronic diseases like kidney disease, cardiovascular, high blood pressure, etc. However it is advisable to drink lots of water to neutralize the initial high sodium consumption. 1 Like |
Health / EBOLA Discoverer Says He Would Sit Next To A Victim On A Train by softandsweet(f): 6:55am On Aug 08, 2014 |
Professor Peter Piot, the scientist who helped discover the Ebola virus, said the outbreak in west Africa was unlikely to trigger a major epidemic outside the region, adding he would happily sit next to an infected person on a train. LONDON: The scientist who helped discover the Ebola virus said the outbreak in west Africa was unlikely to trigger a major epidemic outside the region, adding he would happily sit next to an infected person on a train. But Professor Peter Piot told AFP that a "really bad" sense of panic and lack of trust in the authorities in west Africa had contributed to the world's largest-ever outbreak. The Belgian scientist, now based in Britain, urged officials to test experimental vaccines on people with the virus so that when it inevitably returns, the world is prepared. Since March, there have been 1,201 cases of Ebola and 672 deaths in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has warned that the crisis is set to get worse and that there is no overarching strategy to handle the crisis. Piot co-discovered the Ebola virus as a 27-year-old researcher in 1976. He is now director of the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and was previously executive director of the United Nations' HIV/AIDS programme UNAIDS. Even if someone carrying Ebola were to fly to Europe, the United States or another part of Africa, "I don't think that will give rise to a major epidemic," he told AFP in an interview on Wednesday. "Spreading in the population here, I'm not that worried about it," he said. "I wouldn't be worried to sit next to someone with Ebola virus on the Tube as long as they don't vomit on you or something. This is an infection that requires very close contact." 'I WAS SCARED' His insights are born of deep experience in the field, highlighted by his impressive CV and the mementos from around the world that dot his office in London. Piot helped identify Ebola when the laboratory where he was working in Antwerp was sent a blood sample from a Catholic nun who had died in what was then Zaire and is now DR Congo. From the blood, they isolated a new virus which was later confirmed to be Ebola. He later went to Yambuku, a village in Zaire's Equateur province, where an epidemic had taken hold. "People were devastated because in some villages, one in 10, one in eight people could die from Ebola," he said. "I was scared but I was 27 so you think you are invincible." Researchers noticed most of the infections were among women aged between 20 and 30 and clustered around a clinic where they went for pre-natal consultations. It turned out that the virus was being transmitted through a handful of needles which were being reused to give injections to pregnant women. There were also a string of outbreaks linked to funerals. "Like in any culture, someone who dies is washed, the body is laid out but you do this with bare hands, without gloves. Someone who died from Ebola, that person is covered with virus because of vomitus, diarrhoea, blood," he said. "That's how then you get new outbreaks and the same thing is happening now in west Africa." 'FEAR A DRIVING FORCE' He said recent history in Liberia and Sierra Leone was complicating efforts to tackle the deadly virus, which kills as many as nine-tenths of the people it infects. "Let's not forget that these countries are coming out of decades of civil war," he said. "Liberia and Sierra Leone are now trying to reconstruct themselves so there is a total lack of trust in authorities, and that combined with poverty and very poor health services I think is the explanation why we have this extensive outbreak now." Staff are also often poorly equipped with no protective gear or gloves, he added. While there are a couple of experimental Ebola vaccines and treatments which have shown promising results in animals, these need to be tested on people, he added. "I think that the time is now, at least in capitals, to offer this kind of treatment for compassionate use but also to find out if it works so that for the next epidemic, we are ready," he said. "It is quite clear that new viruses will emerge all the time and Ebola will come again - hopefully not to this extent. "http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/health/ebola-discoverer-says/1290892.html

Nairaland / General / How Much Life Do You Have Left? This Will Tell You? by softandsweet(f): 1:04pm On Aug 06, 2014 |
Over the past few months, I’ve found myself very aware of how I use my time. Which is odd to me. In my past, time was almost exclusively used for advancement or achievement. But recently, my heart has redirected this asset toward more emotional or relational activities. It’s as if my soul is realizing that I only have so many hours left. But how many? After I count the hours I work, the hours I sleep, the hours I drive, and so forth… How much time do I really have left? What should I use it for? Nobody on their deathbed said they wished they worked more. While uncovering this fascinating thought, I found this insightful infographic debunking the question perfectly. It’s worth every word and it has truly helped me recognize that my time here is fading every moment of every day. What will I do with the hours I have left? How did this make you feel? What are you planning to do with your remaining free time? Let me know in the comments below. Culled from The Daily Positive.

Romance / Re: What Is Your Definition Of A Real Man? by softandsweet(f): 4:57pm On Aug 04, 2014 |
eighTHREAD: how well are you ladies of today adhering to the biblical doctrine that says you should be submissive?Well when there's a topic of "whats the definition of a real woman" I guess there will be comments on that. A definition of a real man or woman will vary between individuals. Its not every gender specific issue that should deviate to feminism or weaknesses in the opposite gender. The Original Poster is a man so he may need it to work towards perfection. That being said, real men and women should work towards being real, provided they know and understand what it means to be real. |

eighTHREAD: God created me a MAN , why would I now want to be a REAL MAN? Was I FAKE before? I think a real man is a creation of modern day girls just to suit their carefree ways. A real man is what you might call a puppet.Well you could be right. God created a man and a woman. But dont forget that when he did that, he gave us some instructions. The Bible has it inscribed in all clarity. What they should do as a man, as a head of the family as a husband and even how we should treat our parents, our wives and our neighbours' . Its not far fetched Some men were created physiologically male and women were created that way for a reason. Now there are same gender marriages where men who were created "real men" by Go choose to be women, and likewise women. |

A "real man" is the what we young people call old-fashioned. Chivalry is not dead! A real man has manners, is polite, and considerate. He is honest and open and true to himself. He has respect for his family and honour his parents. He is disciplined and doesnt reign abuses on others. He shows respect to people irrespective of their social standings. He will fight for and defend the people that he loves. A hard-worker. He is not spiteful. He respects women and shows appreciation for all of his blessings. A real man is the provider of the family. He is strong, physically and mentally, and is never too proud to exhibit strong emotion. Once committed, he is faithful to only her. He does not go against his set principles. A real man is someone who doesnt need to do wrong things just to follow the crowd or have worrying addictions He holds his own and set his boundaries. He is a good model for his family. He doesnt indulge foolishly in the trivial things of life He keeps his home in order. A real man may not have all the traits listed above because he knows he is not perfect but wouldn't give up to strive to work towards perfection. A real man is really hard to find. 7 Likes |

If thats the baby in the picture, then that's not a new born baby. However in relation to the topic, a woman who is mentally unstable and pregnant especially should be given the appropriate care she needs irrespective of her mental state. She was even up to term and gave birth too. With a mentally unstable woman, anything is expected. What happened to the social services arm of the state or federal government, or even the deep seated NGO's. An innocent live has just been lost. So sad. |

May God help us curtail this viruz before its becomes an epidemic in Nigeria. Prevention is truly better than cure. We should have had a thorough quarantine process for international travellers from the first african case, that way we would have prevented the late Liberian carrier of Ebola Virus (God rest his soul). Now all we are doing is damage control. God help us 2 Likes |

Romance / Re: Is It Ever Okay For A Woman To Propose To A Man? by softandsweet(f): 11:28am On Jul 31, 2014 |
Why not... Its perfectly okay...... Provided it is in the movies...... or the guy is dump and doesn't have hands to write the proposal with his hands meaning he can only nod his head, so you help him out instead. . Or in rare cases where you are willing to be part of a relatively new research to study the marital success of relationships that were founded on the woman proposing instead of the man. And more importantly where the man will say "Yes I Will, oh my God. I will have your last name and move into your house. bla bla bla.....So yeah only then is it okay. 2 Likes |
