A MOMENTOUS DAY FOR NIGERIA!

By sanctioning the construction of Nigeria LNG Limited’s Train 7 project, the Federal Government and shareholders have solidified a path toward the creation of thousands of jobs for our people, significant economic growth for our nation, and making Nigeria one of the world's largest providers of cleaner energy.

The announcement of the Final Investment Decision for Train 7 is a big breakthrough in a decade—long process fraught with uncertainty, obfuscation and danger to our economy.

NLNG’s expansion project is truly one of the most important and transformational projects in our country. It will bring $10billion of foreign investment for the Train and gas supplies, and enable over 30,000 jobs to be provided during construction.

I heartily congratulate the NLNG Shareholders (NNPC, Shell, Total and Eni), Board, Management and Staff for their untiring efforts and achievement of this significant milestone. It is a gratifying moment that they should be proud of. Kudos!

This is a significant achievement for Nigerian citizens; it is also a victory for President Muhammadu Buhari; a deserving reward for clear vision andunselfish leadership. It is also asign of confidence in this administration by International investors (Oil Companies, Banks and Financial Institutions).

The President conveyed his unwavering support for Train 7 (and more Trains!) during the NLNG Board courtesy visit to him in June 2015. I thank the Honorable Minister of State Petroleum (Chief Timipre Sylva) and his predecessor (Emmanuel IbeKachikwu) as well as the GMD (Mr Mele KoloKyari)and his predecessor (MaikantiBaru)and several of their staff, for actualizing that dream.

I also commendthe several Shareholders’ working teams, previous Management Teams since 2008 and many stakeholders (including General Yakubu Gowon, Chief Ernest Shonekan and Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi, Former Governor of Rivers State) for their efforts and support over the years.

The unnecessary delay of this project in the past 10-years and deferment of the benefits (employment, revenue for country, etc.) and the unhelpful distractions, were unfortunate, and not one that previous leaders can be proud of.

Congratulations to Nigeria on this historic milestone.

AFREXIM RELEASES 75% OF TRADE FINANCE PROMISE.

Afreximbank has already disbursed $15 billion of the $25 billion it committed in support of intra-African trade under its current five-year strategic plan, Bank President Prof. Benedict Oramah has said. Confirming that the Bank was delivering on the commitments it made in support of the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement,  Prof. Oramah told the attendees at the opening of the Africa 2019: Investment for Africa Forum in Egypt’s New Capital City on Friday that the funding was helping bridge the trade finance gap in Africa.

Meanwhile the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) has in Egypt’s New Capital City signed an agreement to provide a $100-million credit facility to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to promote Arab-Africa trade and investments. The signing ceremony took place at the Africa 2019: Investment in Africa Forum, with Afreximbank President Prof. Benedict Oramah and ITFC CEO Hani Sombol signing on behalf of their two organisations in the presence of Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Dr. Sahar Nasr. The agreement states that the facility will help finance and derisk trade flows between the Arab and Africa regions, thereby raising the level of trade, which currently stands at about $500 million. It will also help in leveraging other Arabian funds in support of Arab investments in Africa. The facility is part of the Afreximbank/ITFC Arab-Africa Trade and Investment Promotion Programme launched by the two organisations about two years ago and is aimed at deepening the partnership between them.

Orama added that Afreximbank would soon commence the piloting of  a Pan-African Payment and Settlement System which will allow cross-border trade in Africa to be done in national currencies, thereby addressing the issue of high cost of payments.  Prof. Oramah also said that the Bank was building a trade information portal, which would be launched by year end, to improve knowledge and access to critical trade information across Africa and was developing industrial parks across the continent.

It was also working with the African Union to organise the second Intra-African Trade Fair in Kigali in September 2020, continued Prof. Oramah. The trade fair would underpin  a market of 1.2 billion people, attract over 1,000 exhibitors and 5,000 buyers and generate over $32 billion in deals.

The President said that Egypt had become the largest recipient of foreign direct investments in Africa, despite witnessing a retreat between 2011 and 2013. He attributed this development to the return of confidence to the Egyptian economy due to the visionary leadership of the country.

The two-day Africa 2019: Investment for Africa Forum was organised by the Egyptian Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation, in collaboration with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Trade and Industry. It was held under the auspices of Egyptian President  and current Chairman of the African Union , Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi.
