Manu could not understand why Femi was fond of Juliet. It was true she was busty and well-endowed at the bum, to Manu, she was too tall and muscular for his liking. But then, that was Femi's choice. Afterall, one man's food was another's poison.

Juliet soon came to join them.

'Juliet, Juliet. My beautiful babe, Juliet,' Femi said.

'Good evening.' She sounded moody.

'Why is my babe looking unhappy. Sit down, let me put you in the right mood.'

She sat next to him. He ordered Malt for her.

'I can still see a slight frown on your face,' he said. 'Let me book for a room. We will talk better on the bed,' Femi said.

He stood up, holding her hand. Manu watched them walk to the Manager's office cubicle. He shrugged.

But wait a minute, where was Princess, his babe? Normally, within few minutes of coming to the place, she would come and join him at the table. Why had she not done so today?

He beckoned at the sales girl that had served him.

'Where's Princess? I've not seen her since I came here this evening. Hope all is well with her.'

'She's not feeling too good. Actually, she's down with malaria.'

'Oh, I see.'

No wonder he had not seen her. That meant he would have to take on another lady. He had always enjoyed Princess. She had the shape and figure he would wish a lady to have. For months now, since he started patronizing Pleasure Zone, and since the first time he had her, Manu had made her his choice.

He had some other ladies he slept with in other joints, but as far as Pleasure Zone was concerned, Princess was 'numero uno.'

He was still contemplating what next to do when he heard some noise coming from the passageway that led to different rooms of the brothel.

The noise soon moved to the bar. He could see the Manager looking agitated and trying to settle a scuffle between a man and a lady.

The man was only in a boxer while the lady was clad only in bra and skirt. To Manu's surprise, the man was Femi while the woman was Juliet. Femi and Juliet were the ones causing the hulabaloo. Incredible!

He stood and moved to them.

'I will not agree o,' Juliet was saying. 'Just see the way he slapped me! For what?'

'Did you not slap me back?' Femi retorted. 'Besides, you made me to do it. Why did you refuse to open your leg wide?'

'Was that not the way I've been opening it and you've been doing it before?'

'No. Today, you didn't open it wide enough,' Femi said heteadly. 'And I was not getting value for my money!'

'Alright! Alright!' the manager said. 'Oga, calm down. This matter did not need to degenerate to fighting or exchanging blows. Oga, sebi you and Juliet are friends, you didn't have to fight her now.'

Manu was perplexed. How could Femi and Juliet make a public spectacle of themselves? How could they fight and make public what they should have settled in their closet?

Lust City

By seven p.m., when Manu got to the Pleasure Zone Restaurant and Bar, the place was already brimming with customers. After the hard day's work, many men decided to frequent the place for relaxation.

Some came to drink while some wanted to dine. Some others came to satisfy their pent-up lusts. Yet, some came to enjoy all the services that the place could offer. Apart from the food, wine and beer, some scantily dressed ladies offered 'short time' and 'long term' services for men who desired them.

Manu came to take drinks and pepper soup and to have a fun-filling time with his regular, the lady simply known as Princess.

He sat on one of the plastic chairs surrounding an empty round table. He could see and hear clearly the programme going on on the television. One of the sales girls drifted towards him.

'Welcome, sir. What can we offer you?'

Manu nodded at her. He told her the brand of beer he wanted. 'Also give me a plate of pepper soup.'

Within a couple of minutes, his orders were brought. He used table spoon to sip the soup as he took the beer. Intermittently, he also picked meats from the plate and munched. He had not spent up to ten minutes when Femi came to the bar. Manu and Femi were working together before the latter got a job at Dangogo Foods Limited as Sales Supervisor. Manu owned Excellento Tutorial School and Femi used to be his Economics teacher for GCE and UTME students. His job had taken him away, but not totally. Many evenings, they met in the bar.

'Manu, the Manu,' Femi hailed, making straight for his table. 'How was school today?'

Manu smiled, shook hands with him and shrugged.

'School was fine as usual,' he returned. 'How was you rice, salt and sugar business?'

'Fine too.' He sat down opposite Manu. He too ordered for beer and pepper soup. As the sales girl brought his orders, Femi looked at her with a grin.

'Is Juliet around?'

The girl nodded. 'Yes, sir.'

Femi's grin became wider. 'Tell her to come.'

Once again, the sales girl nodded. 'Yes, sir.'

Manu could not understand why Femi was fond of Juliet. It was true she was busty and well-endowed at the bum, but to Manu, she was too tall and muscular for his liking. But then, that was Femi's choice. Afterall, one man's food was another's poison.

Juliet soon came to join them.

'Juliet, Juliet. My beautiful babe, Juliet,' Femi said.

'Good evening.' Juliet sounded moody.

'Why is my babe looking unhappy. Sit down, let me put you in the right mood.'

The name is Nelson Ovie. Agatha has told me a lot about you, especially about your special escapade. I planned what happened today with her. You have two options. A, Stop disturbing her for sex, and don't you ever victimize her in any way for what happened today. B. Prove stubborn and difficult, and then you go to jail.'

'What nonsense is this? How dare you threaten, intimidate or blackmail me?'

'The choice is yours.'

The line went dead. Joe was furious. He knew the caller must be her acolyte who thought they could intimidate him. More than before, he was determined to deal with her.

He had lecture with her class by ten o'clock the following morning. That was when he would start baring his fangs.

He was all puffed up the following morning. By few minutes to ten, he was ready to leave his office when knocks sounded at his door.

'Yes, come in.'

Two men entered his office. They introduced themselves and showed their identity cards.

'Yes, what can I do for you?' he asked caustically.

'You're under arrest for the rape of Miss Agatha. You have the right to remain silent as any word you say can be used against you in the court of law.'

'What! Incredible. You don't know what you're saying.'

'Maybe. You will have to follow us to the station. There, maybe you will understand us better, or you will explain yourself better.'

The determination of the two men showed that they meant business. Joe had no choice than to follow them to Adekunle police station. He was thrown behind the counter. He called his lawyer, who promptly responded by coming to the police station.

Nelson too came around with his lawyer, a senior advocate of Nigeria. When Joe saw this, he mellowed down on his stance that he was being framed.

'I have the audio and video evidence of what he attempted to do, and the proof the he had done it before,' Nelson said. 'I've not got journalists involved yet, but I will soon do so.'

When Joe realized that he was up against somebody who could cause his reputation and career a big blow, he became sober.

'I will go for option A,' he decided.

Joe's lawyer informed Nelson about his new decision. The once indignant Joe was now penitent. To be free from prosecution, Joe was made to write a letter of undertaking that he would never harass or coerce Agatha for any sexual gratification again.

Apart from this, the meeting in which Joe agreed to be of changed character and never to harass Agatha again was videoed.

For once, in a long time, Dr. Joe Sabada decided to stay off ladies.

Two days after Joe decided to thread the path of truce, Agatha was in the class attending his lecture. Joe did everything possible to ensure that he did not look at her direction. He was served right, Agatha thought, thanking God that Nelson had come to her rescue.

After the lecture, she went to her room. She was still contemplating what to do with her weekend when Anfani came to the room.

'How're you, baby?' she greeted Agatha. It had become her way of greeting her.

'I'm fine.'

Anfani dropped her back-pack and flopped on the bed.

'How's the weekend going to be?' she asked.

Agatha shrugged. 'I guess all will turn out well.'

'You're lucky you've graduated from going to the club to dance.'

Agatha smiled. 'Well, I pray you will soon have that kind of luck too.'

'Dancing in the club is not that bad,' Anfani said, as if trying to console herself. 'It's exciting and it brings some money.'

Agatha nodded but did not say a word. Minutes later, she decided to start the weekend by visiting Nelson in his office.

Thereafter, she would go to Ogba-Ijaiye to spend Friday night and the weekend with Uncle Eddie. She was still thinking of which dress to wear, when Nelson's call came through.

Sam was delighted. 'Really, are you sure there's something for me?'

'Sure. Come over, Sam. What are old friends for?'

Sam nodded. 'Where do you say? How do I get in touch with you?'

'Come to the state secretariat here in Ado. Ask for me at the Ministry Transportation. I’m working at the Ministry of Transportation, office of the Honorable Commissioner. There’s a team in the Ministry that gives tricycles and motorcycles to some deserving members of the public. I’ll put in words for you to the Commissioner, so that you can be part of the coordinating team. I'll have to introduce you as a friend and as a staunch supporter of our party. The project is the state government own. Are you ready for this?'

Sam smiled. Of course he was ready for it. Why else would he travel all the way from Lagos?

'Yes, I'm ready. And I'm very grateful for asking me in on this.'

Kayode nodded. 'But then, that's what friends are for.'

'Kayus, baba! You know what? I'll be in Ado-Ekiti before 1 p.m. Be expecting me.'

'Good. Sam, I'll be expecting you.'

It didn't take him long to pack up his belongings in the house. It was just few minutes past eight in the morning. If he set out immediately he would get to Ekiti before 1 p.m. But he had to tell Michael the he was on the move again. He would have to thank him and hand over the keys of the house to him.

* * *

Guba was in a distressed mood. That morning in his room, he counted the money remaining from what Chief Kashi had given him. He was surprised everything was just N96,680! If he chose the option of declaring the task given to him as unrealizable, then he would have to return the two hundred thousand naira.

That meant he would need to add about N104,000 to the money. Right now, he simply didn't have that kind of money.

What about the option of going after Sam and completing the task? It sounded as a good option, but how would he carry that out? Sam had left for only God knows where?

Even if he knew the place, would he just go and meet him, and shoot him, or what? It was obvious he alone could not execute the task. Then the money he was paid was too little to carry out a successful assassination.

He would have to raise some money between now and the expiration of the time chief gave. Even if it was half of the money he could raise, chief should accept it and take it that he had done his best. It should be as simple as that.

* * *

About five hours later, Sam was in the government secretariat in Ado-Ekiti. At the Ministry of Transportation, he was directed to an office on the first floor. He met a lady behind a computer monitor in the ante office.

It's like there's bad odor in the room,' she said.

He frowned slightly. 'Bad odor? I'm yet to perceive it.'

She wrinkled her nose. 'I want to quickly use the toilet. Before I do, let me try to neutralize the offensive odor.'

She opened her handbag and brought out a small bottle of perfume. She held her breath as she lifted it and sprayed it into the air. Then she quickly dashed into the adjoining toilet.

Joe inhaled what looked like the refreshing scent. But, there was something to it. Few seconds after breathing in the air, he started feeling dizzy. He flopped on the bed and went into a deep sleep.

In the toilet, Agatha quickly brought a handkerchief from her jeans trousers and covered her nose. Just as Nelson had instructed her, she had stopped breathing the moment she brought the spray out and let out the gas inside.

It was the gimmick she had been taught to use. There was neither a bad odor nor the need to use air refreshers.

The spray was certainly made not to neutralize odor. Rather, it was a spray that induced sleep. For the second time within ten days, Joe was dealt with by a lady. This time around, the intent was totally different. It was to teach him a lesson of his. The diamond-looking like stud on the pendant Agatha was wearing was actually a camera chip.

Since she came to the hotel, all her conversations with Joe were recorded in audio and video formats. Even now, as Joe slept on, she brought her phone to video his semi-nude body and to snap his pictures. Now, there were more than enough evidence to nail him.

With the handkerchief still stuck to her nose. She took one more look at Joe and went out of the room.

Once again, over an hour later, it was the manager of the hotel that came to knock on the door. Like the other time, Joe was oblivious of the knocking. This time, when the manager tried to open the door, the door opened easily.

'Oga Joe!' he called as he entered the room. Oh, no, not again, he thought as he moved towards Joe on the bed.

He was breathing regularly - he was much alive.

'Oga Joe, what happened?' he asked.

He knew it was a silly question. Unlike the other time, he did not panic to see him in this condition. He would have to inform his assistant about the development.

'Why is oga Joe carrying ladies that specialize in drug administration?' The assistant asked. It was more like a rhetorical question as no one would answer it.

'What do we do, now?' the assistant asked further.
'We'll leave him,' his boss answered. 'He's only asleep. In some hours' time, he would wake up.

Don't touch anything. Let's leave.'

Joe was left to sleep on. Hours later, when the sleep wore off, Joe was confounded to realize that he had fallen a victim again. The room was in darkness when he woke up and he wondered where he was.

Then, he remembered. Of course, he had brought Agatha to the place. She had complained that there was bad odor and had had sprayed the room. That was it! It was the gas from the damned spray that made him sleep off.

How dare Agatha do that to him? Unlike Wendy, Agatha was his student and it would be easy for him to deal with her. How dare her subject him to this kind of great embarrassment.

Then he quickly searched through the pockets of his clothes. His wallets, phones and cash were all intact. He did not even think over what could be the reason for her to do what she did.

He was still fuming when he left the hotel, vowing to himself over and over again to deal with her. He entered his jeep, started the engine and engaged the gear. His phone rang.

When he checked the caller, he was surprised that it was Wendy on call. Had she called to apologize or what?

'How dare you play that dirty trick on me?' he bellowed into the phone.

'Listen, Mr. Joe Sabada,' a male voice said. 'Listen, and listen good.'

Joe held his breath. Who on earth was this?

'Who're you?' he demanded.

'The name is Nelson Ovie. Agatha has told me a lot about you, especially about your special escapade.

'I planned what happened today with her. You have two options. A, Stop disturbing her for sex, and don't you ever victimize her in any way for what happened today. B. Prove stubborn and difficult, and then you go to jail.'

That was not funny, although he felt like laughing.

'I did not such thing,' he said vehemently. 'There was no way I could have done that.'

‘Are you sure?’

‘Of course, my dear. I didn’t handle any big cash in the office. And I was not the one in charge of accounts.’

Somehow, she believed him.

'So, tell me, what is the real reason why you left? Why did they poison you? Why did they want you dead?'

He realized that she already knew much. But should he trust her? The image of Guba came to his mind. Guba was supposed to be his friend and partner. No, he must not trust anyone again.

'Calm down,' he said, stalling. 'Your questions are not what could be answered now. It's not what we can discuss on the phone. When we meet physically, I'll tell you everything.'

'Oh God, I'm so afraid for you, Sam. I love you and I miss you.'

He grinned. 'Don't worry. All these will soon end. I'll be okay. I love you and miss you too.'

She nodded and tried to assure herself that indeed, all would be well. 'Okay, if you say so.'

'Yes, I say so. I think it's better you don't let people know that I've been contacting you. I think it's better that if chief or anyone asks about me, pretend that you've lost contact completely with me. I'll be contacting you again. For now, bye.'

'Take care of yourself, please. Bye.'

A part of his mind told him that she was genuinely concerned about him, but he just had to be careful. After he disengaged the line, he was back to loathing the state of idleness that he found himself.

He went through the phonebook on his phone, thinking of who he could contact that might be of help. The way Chief Kashi was seriously looking for him showed that he just had to steer clear of him, at least for now, if not for ever.

While going through his phone book, he came across the number of an old pally, Kayode, also known as Kayus. Kayode was also based in Lagos before but had relocated to Ado-Ekiti to work for a prominent politician. Sam decided to call him.

'Kayus baba,' he started. 'Long time. How're you, and how're the people of Ekiti? Ekiti kete!'

'Fine. Sorry, who's on the line?'

Sam chuckled. 'Kayode, don't tell me you've lost my number. If you would lose anyone's number, it shouldn't be your old pally.'

'I'm sorry,' Kayus said. 'I've actually lost many numbers. Who's on the phone?'

'This is Sam on the line. Sam Olufemi.'

'Sam! Oh, boy, how are you?'

'Well, Sam dey and is trying to confront the challenges of life.'

'Samuel Olufemi! It's very good to hear from you. What are you doing with yourself right now?'

Sam grinned. 'Ah, it's not easy. I was employed until yesterday when I lost the job. Right now, Sam is at home doing nothing. Can you imagine that? Sam is in the labor market.'

'Is that so?’

‘Na so, my brother.'

There was a short silence.

‘If you don't mind, why don't you come over to Ado-Ekiti? Let's discuss. I'm sure there's something we can offer you.'

Sam was delighted. 'Really, are you sure there's something for me?'

'Sure. Come over, Sam. What are old friends for?'

There was no need Guba wasted further time there. He had confirmed what he came to confirm. He turned to go.

'Thank you, sister for your time. I'll keep on trying to reach him. Good night.'

'Good night.'

She watched as he left the compound.

The sudden interest in Sam and the fact Sam himself had to leave hurriedly meant there was trouble somewhere.

She too tried to reach his lines again but could not reach any of them. That had been the situation since morning.

Apart from when Sam called her to let her know that he had travelled out of Lagos, she could not reach him. Definitely, there was something sinister about the whole episode. She could only watch, wait and see.

* * *

The following morning, as early as six in the morning, Bisi received a call from Chief Kashi.

'Good morning, Bisi. How are you?'

It was quite odd that he was calling her so early, but she tried to sound normally. 'Good morning, uncle. I'm hale and hearty.'

'Thank God for that. Sorry I'm calling you so early.'

'It's okay, sir.'

'There's something I need to let you know.'

'What is that, uncle?'

'Sam has committed some fraud in the office, that's why he's on the run.'

'What?!'

'Yes, that's the fact. He has stolen money from the office running into millions of naira.'

She was stupefied and short of words.

'There's something you must do for me,' he continued. 'If you get to know when he's back in the house or in Lagos, alert me. Don’t confront him or let him know that I’ve revealed this secret to you. Just pick your phone and let me know he’s around. Do you understand?'

'Yes ... yes, sir.'

'Alright, have a nice day.'

'Yes, sir. Have a nice day too.'

She dropped the phone, feeling giddy. Was that true that the reason Sam bolted away was because he committed fraud? What was all this about?

But what was the relevance of that to the fact that Sam was poisoned the day before yesterday? If Sam had indeed committed fraud, how come Chief Kashi did not mention anything like that the previous evening when he had come around?

Certainly, something sinister was going.

After his friend, Michael, had gone to work, Sam was left in the house alone. He suddenly realized that he did not have a place of work to go. If he did not do something exigent to change the situation, he would remain like this for a long time.

His mind recoiled at the thought of this present situation. He hated idleness. He might not be the best of worker, but he detested indolence.

He would have to do something. There was no way every other person would go to work and he would be loafing around! He decided to call Bisi and tried to find out what had happened in his absence.

He would have to use his old sim card, ant then stored her number on the phone.

It was as if she was standing by to receive his call, as she picked it after the second ring.

'Hello, love,' she said anxiously. 'God, I've been trying to call you.'

'Good morning, darling, how're you?'

'I'm fine. What about you? Where exactly are you?'

The alarm bell went off in his head. 'Don't you worry about me,' he replied. 'Just know that I'm fine.'

'But I'm worried. I'm worried that different people have been coming to ask after you. I'm worried that you're incommunicado. I'm worried that your boss too is looking for you.'

Sam became alert. 'Chief Kashi was looking for me?'

'Yes, he came to the house yesterday to look for you. This morning, he has called to inform me that I should let him know any time you come back. Tell me, Sam, what is the real reason you took off?'

He breathed in deeply. Just how much did she know?

'You don't believe the reason I gave you?' he parried.

'Your boss said you stole money running into millions of naira from the company.' Her uncle had told her not to disclose this to him, but in a moment like this, she was thinking with her heart.

That was not funny, although he felt like laughing. 'I did not such thing,' he said vehemently. 'There was no way I could have done that.'

‘Are you sure?’

‘Of course, my dear. I didn’t handle any big cash in the office. And I was not the one in charge of accounts.’

There was a long silence across the line.

'Hello? Are you still there?' she wondered.

'Yes, I am,' he answered. 'So, he wants you to meet him this evening?'

'Yes.'

'No problem. Can you make it to my office soonest, before you meet him? We can fix his matter for good.'

Agatha's mind raced. What did he mean by that?

'I will do something that will make him stop disturbing you forever,' he said. 'Come and see me.'

She nodded as if he could see her. 'Okay.'

Manu was determined to go ahead with his plan of marrying Clara. He had to put his mind in it to even convince himself that he was not gambling. Clara looked decent, he decided.

The aspect of her not being good in cooking could be handled: she should learn it. He believed that all things would fall in place once they were married. But there was another problem: he would have to stop all other affairs with other ladies.

He had told Clara that he had no other lover apart from her, he would like to go by that.

There was no doubt that it would be a good thing if he should leave all other ladies to concentrate on Clara. It would be an uphill task to overcome this, knowing the kind of nature he had. But he would have to try. He just must try.

Hours later, Agatha was at the hotel to keep the appointment with Joe. She had met with Nelson and had perfected how to go about Joe's matter.

'My Agatha,' Joe said, breaking into an expansive smile.

'My dear Agatha!'

She came to join him at the table.

'Good day, sir.'

'Yes, a very good day it is. You look delightful. Sit down.'

'Thank you, sir.'

'You look so good and so fresh. I like this your necklace and pendant.' He pointed at the necklace she was wearing.

'Thank you, sir.'

'Now, let me give the order. Will you have drink with a plate of pepper soup, just like I'm having?'

In what had become a habit, she declined. 'Oh, no, sir. I'm okay for now.'

He seemed to be in an excited mood.

'I'm very happy today. Tell me any exotic wine you want and I'll order for it.'

She still shook her head.

'Well, since you don't want to drink any have any refreshments, that means you want us to go straight to business. Since that's the case, let's retreat to the room.'

They left the drinking lobby and went inside the room he had booked.

'Let's not waste time further,' he said as he removed his clothes. He was soon stripped to boxer and singlet.

Several days after Joe lost some valuables to Wendy, the police had neither been able to track Wendy down nor recover his stolen items. Joe found it difficult to believe that the lady would go un-apprehended and unpunished, just like that. He had been telling those who cared to listen how grossly incompetent the police were. He however still believed she would be arrested and forced to pay for her crime. He was trying to forget his misadventure with her and move on with life. This afternoon, he had asked Agatha to see him in his office by noon, when her lectures for the day would have ended. She came to his office few minutes to one.

'Agatha, baby. See how you're shining every day.'

Agatha smiled. 'It's the grace of God,' she said.

Indeed, she was looking good. With the money she had made from Nelson Ovie, she had been able to upgrade her wardrobe. She had been able
to buy designers' wears and accessories. Nelson had not stopped at the money he first gave her. Last Saturday, she called him to thank him for
the generosity he had displayed the previous day. He had invited her to the Federal Palace Hotel, where he treated her to sumptuous meal. The
surprising thing was that he had not gone beyond that; he had not made any sexual overture. That was very surprising.

'First and foremost, I want your friendship, he had said. Agatha had consented whole-heartedly. There was no qualm with that, was there?

'I must say I miss your company in the last day,' Joe was saying.

Agatha had grinned, but she was certain she was no longer comfortable with her lecturer or his love antics.

'Any way, I don't have much to say now. Let us meet at our usual place and at our usual time. Then, I'll show how delectable you are and how I
have improved in my sexual prowess.' He laughed at his own joke.

Agatha didn't find it funny but smiled.

'So, you can go, now. We'll meet at the rendezvous, then I'll show and improve to you that I'm much better now.'

She hated the smugness which Joe displayed, but she tried to appear impressed.

Something told her that Nelson wanted more than he had shown, so far. But what exactly did he want? Time would tell.

As for Dr. Joe, Agatha was beginning to loathe the idea of continuing to have an affair with him. Whatever they had done in the past must belong
to the past. Henceforth, there should be no re-enactment of such a thing.

She wished she would not have to see him at that rendezvous. In fact, she wished she would never to see him at close range again. Then, an
idea dropped in her mind. Why not try it and see if it would work? As she left the English Department, she brought out her new phone. From the
money Nelson had gifted her, she had bought a powerful Infinix phone. She called Nelson.

'Hello. Good day, sir.'

'Good day my princess.' He laughed briefly over the line. 'I've told you to drop saying 'sir.' I don't want you to be official when you're addressing
me.'

She grinned. 'Okay. Sorry about that. I called because there's an issue bothering my mind.'

'What could that be?'

She sighed and quickly thought over how best to discuss it with him.

'There's a lecturer in my department disturbing me about sex. I've actually yielded to him, but he doesn't seem to get enough. Today, he just told
me to meet him in a hotel by six this evening.'

'I don't want you two to waste time any more. Let the wedding be done as soon as possible,' mama said.

He nodded in agreement. 'Yes, mama. We will work at it to make it be realizable soonest.' He turned to Clara. 'Is that not so, darling?'

Clara nodded. 'Yes, it is.'

After Anfani and Fatty left the club, they went to meet their respective boyfriends. Anfani went to meet Frederick in Festac Town while Fatty left for Yaba. It was the following day, Saturday, that Anfani met Agatha in the hostel.

'You didn't even care to tell us when you were leaving,' Anfani accused Agatha.

'No, I made effort to let you and Fatty know. I came to the dressing-room to inform you that I would be leaving, but by then you were already in the bar.'

Anfani smiled mischievously. 'So, tell me. Who was the guy that showed so much interest in you? Where did he take you too? How much did he give you?'

'Hey, all these questions? One at a time, please. Well, he is Nelson Ovie, and according to his complimentary card, an importer of merchandise. He likes me and has told me to stop dancing naked.'

Anfani stared at her friend. 'Just like that? The man likes you and wants you to stop dancing; and you stopped just like that?'

Agatha chuckled. 'No, it's not just like that. He actually compensated me for stopping the act.'

'He paid you not to dance in the club again? How much did he pay?'

Agatha grinned. 'He gave me 100 k with a promise to do more.'

Anfani's eyes popped out. 'What! One hundred thousand naira? Are you serious?'

'Yes, I am. Not only that, he also gave me 200 dollars.'
Anfani's eyes grew wider. 'You don't mean it, Agatha!' She came to hug her. 'You've struck gold, friend!'

Agatha smiled wanly. 'He asked me to call him as soon as possible, but I've not done so.'

'Why?' Anfani decided. 'Why haven't you called someone like that?'

Agatha pursed her lips. 'Let's just say I have some reservations.'

Anfani looked like she was hearing the strangest thing in her life.

'What reservations? What are you talking about?'

Agatha shrugged. 'The money he spent was too much. How am I sure he's not into money rituals? Imagine how much he has spent on a girl he hardly knows!'
Anfani scoffed at this.

'Listen, Agatha, this is an opportunity in a life time. Many ladies like me are struggling to have an opportunity such as this. What rituals are you talking about? Even if he's into rituals, what is your business with that? He's giving you doles of money and that's the important thing.'

Agatha nodded, trying to agree with her friend.

'In any case, can you please hand over all the money he gave you? Let's tell him you're not interested. Me, I'm interested. Can we swap roles?'

Not on your life, Agatha thought and smiled. She shrugged. 'Alright. Thanks for your sermon, Agatha. I guess I have to face this squarely. It's my luck.'

Anfani came to hug her again. 'What a luck you have! What about us your friends? Are you not going to celebrate this 'big catch' for us?'

'Sure thing. This afternoon, we'll go to eatery to have good food. We'll also take drinks. You, Fatty and I: we'll have jolly time together.'

He smiled again. 'I said I like you. I really mean that. The first thing I want you to do for me is to stop dancing in this club or any other club. I know you're making some money from it, but I want you to stop. I'm going to compensate you for that. Can you do that for me?'

She gazed at the floor. She had not committed any crime, had she? The essence of the dance was to make extra cash, and that was what she was doing. So, he wanted her to stop. Why, because he liked her! But, he said he would compensate her. How much would he pay for this?

'Will you do me the favor of stopping this dance?' he asked.

She nodded, hoping the compensation would be worthwhile.

He nodded. 'Good. So, we have a deal there.' His right hand went inside the kaftan pocket. He brought out a complimentary card.

'This is my card. You can call me anytime you desire. You can also visit my office at V.I during working hours. The address is on the card.'

She stared at the card and nodded.

'Good.' He smiled again. He seemed to smile a lot. His right hand went inside the kaftan again and brought out another item. This time around, it was a bulky envelope.

'Take.' He extended his hand to her. Slowly, he took the envelope from him.

'That is the beginning of your compensation,' he said.

He stood up. His confidence was assertive. 'Be a good girl, Agatha. I'll be expecting your call.'

'Thank you ... thank you, sir.'

He walked out of the office. She stared briefly at the door and at the envelope he had given her. How much was inside it? She sighed and carefully, as if it was a parcel bomb, opened the envelope.

There was a bundle of N1000 naira notes. That should be one hundred thousand naira. But there was something else: there were also twenty dollars bills. She counted ten of them.

Wow! This man must be in big money. How could he just hand over this kind of money to her? But, he said he liked her. And he wanted her to stop the club dance. Of course, she would stop. He had said this was the beginning of the compensation and wanted her to call him. She would do so.

She put the envelope in her handbag and stood up.

Yes, the nude dance would cease from now on and forever. But, she would have to tell her friends, Anfani and Fatty. Quickly, she went to the dressing-room, but they were not there.

They had probably started the show. Agatha shrugged and made her way to the exit of the club. Her friends would meet her at the campus.

Clara followed Manu to his house. She had said yes to his request and he had gushed over it, like an exited school boy. He had promised to love her and not let her down.

After that, Clara had been thoughtful. She was just twenty while he was thirty-eight. She did not mind the near-two-decades age gap between them.

Manu was a good-looking guy and he appeared generous. The only fear she had was the fact that she had seen different visit him in his office. Those ladies did not come for anything official.

They had had come on private visits and she suspected that they might be his lovers.

'But, I have fears,' she had said.

He looked puzzled. 'Fear? What fear?'

She looked at him intently. 'I have fear that you have many lovers.'

He had tried to laugh it off. 'Yes, I have numerous female friends, but none is my lover. The only lover I have on earth right now is you.'

'Is that really true?'

He had nodded emphatically. 'Yes, it's true. Do you want me to swear? I'm ready to do so.'

'No need to swear. I'll take your words for it.'

So, Clara decided to believe him. If he could keep to his words, she had no doubt that he would be a good husband.

Mama was waiting for them at home. 'Oh, our wife and my daughter,' she gushed as she embraced Clara. The latter knelt down in greeting.

To save the hassles of cooking, Manu bought some food that mama would take in the evening at the eatery close to the house. Mama would have preferred that Clara should cook, but she could not make any dissension.

Fatty patted Agatha. 'Good luck,' she said, smiling. Anfani looked at her and winked. They soon left her with Cyril in the office. She sat on one of the visitors' seats while he brought his phone out and made a call.
'Yes, sir, the lady is in my office now.'

There was a slight pause. 'Okay, sir. That will be no problem, sir.'

He disengaged the line and turned to smile at her.

'He says he's on his way and will soon be here. Meanwhile, he said I should give you any drink of your choice.'

She remained confused. Now, what kind of thing was this? Her plan was to come and dance, make her money and go. Which one was this one that looked like 'being detained'?

Cyril could sense her nervousness. 'Relax,' he said, smiling. 'I know Chief Ovie very well. He can only do this to somebody he really likes.'

Agatha nearly chuckled. She did not even know the man and could not imagine how he looked. Yet, she was told the man liked her!

'What drinks do I get you?' Cyril intruded into her thoughts.

'Malt will be okay.'

He nodded. 'Just a minute.'

He left the office. She sighed and tried to relax. So, the man was interested in her, why did he pick on her? She believed Anfani was more beautiful than her, why not pick Anfani?

Fatty too was beautiful, although she was chubby. The other two girls were not bad-looking. Out of the five pretty young ladies, why did he pick on her?

Cyril was soon back with a tray containing two cold bottles of malt and a covered plates containing barbecue. He did not even ask one of the service girls to serve Agatha. Cyril was the one doing it himself. Gosh!
'I bought some suya (roasted meats) for you to savor the taste,' he said, grinning.

This is serious, she thought. A glass cup and an opener were also in the tray. He opened it for her.

'There you're,' he said.

'Thank you very much, sir. I mean thank you, Cyril.'

'You're welcome. Just relax and don't worry about a thing. See, I'll soon be back. I want to attend to work matters.'

She nodded. 'Okay.'

About five minutes later, a man that should be about fifty years came to the office. He was looking important in his well starched kaftan.

His polished shoes, gold wrist-watch and his carriage all portrayed a successful and confident person. He smiled at her.

'Good evening, sir,' Agatha greeted.

'Good evening, my lovely queen.' He extended his hand for a hand shake. 'I'm Chief Doctor Nelson Ovie.'

So, this was the man who desired to see her. 'Good evening, sir,' she greeted again.

'Yeah. I'm sorry to keep you waiting. Hope you're not angry.'

She shook her head. 'No, I'm not. I was only wondering why I you wanted to see me, sir.'

He smiled benignly and sat on another visitor's chair. 'I'll come to that. Very soon, I'll come to that. I want to discuss some matters with you.'

Agatha tried to look calm but she was all tensed up. What did this important-looking man want to discuss with her?

'Cyril told me you're an undergraduate student of Lagoon-View University. Is that right?'

She nodded. 'Yes, sir.'

'Good. Now, let me tell you why I wanted to see you. I wanted to see you because I like you.'

Agatha froze on her seat. It was not as if she had not thought that the man would say this, but the way he said it in that no-hold-barred way made her react the way she did.

'Sir?' she asked.

Ovie smiled.

He smiled again. 'I said I like you. I really mean that. The first thing I want you to do for me is to stop dancing in this club or any other club. I know you're making some money from it, but I want you to stop. I'm going to compensate you for that. Can you do that for me?'

He did not need to be explicit as she already knew the person he was referring to. A couple of minutes later, Clara came inside his office. It was amazing that so far, he had not succeeded in sleeping with her. Just as he was planning to do so, something would prop up and scuttle the plan.

But, he did not really call her because he wanted to get between her legs. He called her for another purpose.
'Mama says she's dying to see you again before she returns home,' he said. He had told her so before but she had been so adamant.

'Sir, I've told you I can't continue that kind of drama. Why don't you tell her the truth that I'm just your student?'

He sighed. She had a point there, but he would not just admit that something could not be done to remedy the situation. Then, a golden idea came to his mind and he smiled. Right there in his office, he went down on his knees.

'Clara, will you marry me?'

'What?!' She was shocked to say the least. This must be the epilogue of the drama he had scripted, she thought.

'Uncle Manu, why're you embarrassing me? Please, stand up.'

'Will you? I promise to take care of you and to be a good husband.'

Oh God, what an embarrassment, she thought. What if somebody entered the office and found him like this?

'Alright, alright,' she said hurriedly. 'I agree.'

'Really?' He was full of smiles. 'Clara, do you really agree to be my wife?'

'Yes,' she replied, giving a wan smile.

He got up to come and hug her in ecstasy. It was that moment that the secretary entered. While Clara felt even more embarrassed to be found closeted in his arms, he didn't appear to give a hoot.

'Sorry, sir,' the secretary said. 'Two officers from the Local Education District (LED) are here to see you.'

He nodded. 'It's alright. Tell them to give me one minute.'

'Okay, sir.' The secretary turned to leave the office.
Manu turned to face Clara.

'I'm delighted that you've agreed. Wow! Today is a wonderful day in my life. Good. That means you'll see my mother this evening, right?'

She nodded. 'Right.'

Once again, he bear-hugged her.

It was a week after Agatha first followed Anfani and Fatty to the Queenzy Club. They were back again this Friday to re-enact the show. Agatha had seen that indeed, the nude dance business came with lucre.

Apart from the money the club had paid, some of the impressed customers had sprayed some dollars on her - yes, dollars, not naira. From all indications, apart from throwing off decency, the business appeared to be harmless.

'Enjoy the show now that you're still young, beautiful and vibrant,' Anfani said.

Just like the previous week, they first went to the office of the club manager, Cyril.

'Hello, babies,' he greeted, beaming in smiles. 'Our angels have come again.'

'Good evening, Cyril,' Anfani replied. 'How's business?'
'Fine. You're welcome.'

'Thank you,' Agatha and Fatty jointly replied.

Cyril faced Agatha squarely. 'I have a message for you.'

She was surprised. 'Me?'

He nodded. 'Yes, you. One of our esteemed customers, Chief Nelson Ovie said as soon as you come, I should let you know he'll like to see you.'

Agatha was nonplussed, while Anfani looked at her enviously. 'Hey, that means you've caught a big fish,' Anfani said.

Cyril pointed at a seat. 'Please, sit down while I inform him that you've come.'

'But ... but, I hope no problem,' Agatha said.

He smiled. 'Oh, no. Not at all. I'm sure it's all for good.'

He turned to the other ladies. 'Alright, you girls can go ahead to the dressing room. She'll be coming to join you there.'

Fatty patted Agatha. 'Good luck,' she said, smiling.

Anfani looked at her and winked. They soon left her with Cyril in the office. She sat on one of the visitors' seats while he brought his phone out and made a call.

His mind went over the option the chief had given him: that if he could not carry out the task within five days, he must be prepared to return the two hundred thousand naira he had been paid.

The unfortunate thing was that just between yesterday morning and this evening, Guba had spent almost half of the money! He had basically spent the money on women, wine and playing lotto, called ‘Baba Ijebu’.

Where would he get the replacement of money for chief in the next five days? Yet, he must look for Sam and get rid of him. If poison failed, as it had done obviously, then the alternative ways to get rid of him would by stabbing, clubbing or shooting.

None of these would be easy, knowing fully well that Sam was a smart guy. What would he do now? He decided that he had to confirm that indeed Sam was alive. He brought out his phone and called his number. Again, the network service provider indicated that his phone was switched off.

Guba sighed. Somehow, he had to go to Sam's apartment. But, what if he came face to face with him? How would he react to Sam’s probable belligerence?

Well, he would tell Sam that he became worried about him after he had tried severally and unsuccessfully to call him on the phone to come for another celebration.

What if Sam accused him of trying to kill him by poison? Simple: he would deny ever trying to do that. He would remind Sam of their friendship and that he could never do that to a friend.

Besides, he would claim that he too ate from the suya meats!

That was it! He went to Ojota bus stop to take a bus going to Ikorodu. About fifty minutes later, he was at the front of the door to Sam's apartment, pressing the bell. Bisi came out of her own apartment to attend to him.

'Hello, good evening. Who do you want to see?' she asked.

He smiled wryly at her. 'Good evening. I came to see Sam.'

She shook her head. 'He's not around.'

Guba scratched his head. 'When did he go out? Where did he go and when will he be back?'

Bisi was bemused. Why was everybody suddenly asking about Sam? Why was this man asking so many questions? Although he looked harmless, one could never tell.

'I don't know where he went to and I don't know when he will be back,' she answered cautiously. 'Why don't you call his number and ask? And who are you to him?'

Guba did not like being questioned, much less by a woman. He must however maintain a cool and friendly mien. 'I'm Guba, his very good friend. I've been trying his number since morning. I became worried since I could not reach out to him. That's why I came around to his house to see if all what well with him.'

She decided that he appeared a bit sincere and she would open up a bit to him. 'Frankly speaking, I think Sam has travelled,' she said.

Guba's heart sank. He had to strive to conceal his anxiety. 'Travel? To where?'

Again, she decided to be cautious. 'I don't really know, but I think he has travelled.'

An idea came to his mind. 'Sorry, when did you see him last?'

'This morning,' came the prompt answer.

Now, Guba was dismayed. If indeed what this lady was saying was true, then Sam was alive! He had known that his life was threatened and had bolted.

A week after Eddie had brought Dolly home, he was having the fun of his life, or so he thought. He certainly found this experience fantastic and fascinating. Dolly was the best partner he ever had, in his own reckoning. She never complained.

She never demanded for anything, and she was never tired of him. Real-life or not, Eddie believed this was a blissful experience. He got a call from Miss Linda, the manager of the store where he had made the august purchase.

'Good day, sir. This is Miss Linda on the line.'

'Good day,' he replied. 'Yes, I've stored your number, so I know you're the one. How're you?'

'Fine. I call to find out if you have any complaint about the product we sold to you.'

Eddie grinned. 'There's no complaint, so far. I'm really getting the best from her. And she's not a product. She's a real partner.'

'We're happy to hear that,' Linda said. 'Okay, have a blessed day.'

'And you too.'

He grinned again as the connection was cut. In the past days, he had cut off all the ladies in his life, in terms of mating.

Even Dora was surprised he no longer called to patronize her. Some days ago, Dora had actually given him a patronizing call.

'I'm back in Lagos o,' she said. 'And I'm available for service 24/7.'

'Dora, welcome back. Yeah, when I need you I would let you know.'

Dora was surprised. 'I hope another babe has not taken you away from me,' she said in concern.

Eddie smiled. He would not tell her yes or no. 'Don't worry. When I need your service, I'll let you know.'

He had disconnected the line. Kinky taste or not, he thought, Dolly would never leave him for Abuja to 'service' other men. Dolly would forever be faithful.

Mama would be returning to Delta State tomorrow, after spending over a week with her son in Lagos. She had been pestering him that she would like to see her future daughter-in-law one more time before she departed.

Now in his office in the school, the bell for the long break had just been rung. He called the secretary.

'Tell Clara to come,' he told her. 'Clara in the JAMB class.'

He did not need to be explicit as she already knew the person he was referring to. A couple of minutes later, Clara came inside his office. It was amazing that so far, he had not succeeded in sleeping with her.

Michael nodded and patted him on the left shoulder.

Guba was on his way to the joint he frequented at Ojota when Chief Kashi's call came through.

'Hello, good evening, sir.'

'Bad evening, Guba. You must find whatever way you can devise to complete your assignment.'

'Assignment?' Guba was confused. 'I've completed the assignment you gave to me, sir.'

'No, you've not. As I speak to you right now, I can say authoritatively that Sam is alive.'

Guba could feel his heartbeat. The thumping was distressing, to say the least. 'Sam? Unbelievable.'

'You better believe it. I've been to his house and I heard it from good authority that he's alive.'

'Wonderful!' Guba exclaimed, for lack of any other expression.

'You must complete your assignment,’ Kashi said vehemently. ‘By whatever means, you must complete your assignment. I give you five days, starting from this moment. If you can't accomplish the task within the stipulated days, then you must return my money.'

'I ... I ...' Guba stuttered, but the line was already dead. The chief had disconnected it.

Guba was aghast. How could Sam be alive? He had mixed the suya generously with the powder the chief himself provided, so how could he be alive? How could Sam possibly survive the poison?

Guba was pensive. But then, he thought, if the poison was not potent enough to kill Sam, then, it was not he, Guba, that should be blamed for that. Was it not chief that brought the stuff? How could that stuff fail to do what it was expected to do?

Guba, however, knew he was only thinking this way to console himself. He could never confront the boss on this. He knew that as far as the chief was concerned, he - Guba - had failed to deliver.

This news about Sam surviving greatly upset him. What would he do now? It was already few minutes past seven. Should he go to Sam's house to verify that he was alive, or what?

He paused by the roadside to deliberate on what to do. All of a sudden, the joint he wanted to go and drink became the least appealing place to him. He would have to suspend going there.

If poison failed, as it had done obviously, then the alternative ways to get rid of him would be stabbing, clubbing or shooting.
