How time flies. This 2KW Solar energy system was installed January 2018. That's 7years ago.

It comprises;
250Watts Polycrystalline.PV 8units
2.5kva pure sine wave inverter
50A PWM charge controller 2unit
200AH wet cells battery (produced in Nigeria)

The Technology Trends

Typically you could find such system configurations those days. Talking about Poly Crystalline PV which have mostly been overshadowed by Mono Crystalline PV with advanced technology, higher capacity as well as greater efficiency. 250/260Watts was sometimes the highest single PV module that you could find available in Nigeria then. But now we're are almost hitting 1000Wattage single PV module that are reasonable enough in size/weight compared to their outputs/wattage.

Those Batteries in the picture are flooded/wetcell type. They were made in Nigeria then by a Nigerian company but we never took time to develop the technology and to improve on it and as such, the Indian people took over and dominated that battery technology and advanced it to today's Tall Tubular batteries which have become the second most sort after to Lithium batteries that have Chinese dominance. Imagine Nigeria had continued in that trajectory by now the story would have been to our economic advantage.

The PWM charge controllers have been taken over by MPPT charge controller which has better efficiency and are mostly incorporated in manufacturing hybrid inverters that are found nowadays. These technologies are mostly Chinese and Indian as well.

Training= practical/hands on learning eg Apprenticeship to gain mastery and expand your skills. While certification is like an endorsement or Approval a testimonial/certificate you can receive from a regulatory/professional body after you have passed some series of tests/exams according to their lay down standards

What is your advice for someone that doesn't have the financial muscle to power an apartment for now but wish to power a freezer & fans?

You could start, buy small small, buy solar panels first maybe four 300watts, then charge controller, then inverter, lastly buy 2 battery but the inverter must have to be what can power your freezer/fridge (preferably not lower than 2.5kva24V inverter).
Plan and work towards it and you can achieve it

Majorly in Nigeria now we use Tubular(wet cell) or Lithium battery in Nigeria which are more reliable than the previous SLA batteries.
Some tips for a novice:
1) warranty duration (should be at least 18months for Tubular and 5years for Lithium batteries) the higher the better but may cost more.
2) the price (if the price is much cheaper than the others, the AH/capacity may be compromised)
3) the weight of the Tubular battery.

The Solar panels required for your system should be primarily be determined by your Loads demand. Simply what amount of energy that can serve you per day for your specified loads, including charging of the batteries. When the cost of this is above your budget then you can do the one according to your pocket and can then support with public power supply or generator set depending on the season and your need for energy when the solar energy goes out.

The DC component of my solar installation has been sparking and melting of late. Sometimes, it stops charging altogether, until we reboot the system. We were told to replace the unit, which is 63 amps. Now we are contemplating getting the 100amps or 123amps...is this ok?

Again, what is the best brand to go for; the current one we are using is Schneider but it seems fake. What better brands are out there?

Get a Chint DC circuit breaker not AC. From Oshodi Arena or Alaba international. Or online... It's not cheap though 😊
