Portugal coach Fernando Santos insists there’s no issues with Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

On Sunday night, Portugal blew automatic World Cup qualification with defeat at home to Serbia.


Ronaldo was seen remonstrating with Santos at the final whistle, as Portugal now face a playoff in March to reach the finals.

Santos stated: “He was saying that, in Serbia, he had scored a goal in the last minute and it wasn’t validated.

“That’s what he was saying. It’s his outburst, it’s normal, he was frustrated. No one will explain, at the end of a game, what happened and what didn’t.”

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo was reduced to tears as Serbia edged Portugal 2-1 on their home soil to clinch automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Portugal went into the tie needing just a point to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar and took the lead inside two minutes.

Just one goal would be enough to see them leapfrog Portugal into the automatic spots and their persistence paid off in the 90th minute.

Mitrovic, who missed the all important penalty as Serbia lost to Scotland in the Euro 2020 play-off final on penalties a year ago, rose highest at the back post to power the ball past Rui Patricio.

Jubilant scenes then following as the entire Serbia team and bench sprinted towards the corner flag.

The cameras then panned to Ronaldo, who was throwing his arms around in frustration.

Portugal will now slug it out in the playoffs along with Sweden, Wales, Switzerland or Italy, Finland or Ukraine, Scotland, one of Turkey, Norway or the Netherlands, as well as Russia, Poland or England, and North Macedonia or Romania.

Victor Osimhen has arrived Super Eagles camp ahead of Saturday’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying encounter against the Lone Star of Liberia, Completesports.com reports

The Napoli of Italy striker joined his teammates in Tangier, Morocco on Wednesday morning.

Osimhen’s arrival increased the number of players in the team’s camp to 22.

Al Shabab forward Odion Ighalo and Enyimba goalkeeper John Noble are now the only absentees.

Former Nigerian striker, Jonathan Akpoborie has warned Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr not to depend on Odion Ighalo for goals ahead of the team’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde respectively.

Ighalo, 32, last featured for Nigeria in 2019 after the AFCON and he was in action for his Saudi Arabia side Al Shabab on Friday in the last league game before the international break.

Nigeria currently leads Group C with 9 points from four games. They have two points more than their Group game opponents Cape Verde.

In an interview with Completesports.com, the former Wolfsburg star stated that the team must play as a unit in order to overcome the Lone Star at the Grand Stade de Tangier on Saturday.

He also warned the German tactician not to allow the players to focus their attention on Ighalo for goals if the team must overcome Liberia.

“The game against Liberia is a crucial game the team must win if they are to qualify for the final knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. With just four days to the crucial 2022 World Cup qualifier against the Lone Star of Liberia at the Grand Stade de Tangier, Al-Shabab striker, Odion Ighalo is yet to announce when he will storm the Super Eagles camp.

Ighalo, who last played for the senior national team in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team defeated Tunisia in the Third-Place match to win bronze, was named among the 24-man squad by the German tactician for the game against Liberia and Cape Verde.

It was the second time Ighalo would be exiting the national team following a vow he earlier made never to don Nigeria’s green and white after horrendous abuse and death threats directed at him and his family following Nigeria’s ouster from the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Ighalo made 35 appearances for the West Africa nation from 2015 to 2019, scoring 16 goals in the process.

Former Super Eagles goalkeepers Ike Shorunmu and Abiodun Baruwa have congratulated Maduka Okoye, following his move to Premier League outfit Watford.

On Monday the Hornets announced the signing of Okoye for an undisclosed fee from Eredivisie club Sparta Rotterdam.

The deal which is five-and-a-half year, will begin on 1 January 2022 and run until the end of the 2026-27 campaign.

The 22-year-old will spend the rest of the 2021-22 season back with Sparta Rotterdam on a loan deal.

And reacting to the move, Shorunmu speaking in Tuesday’s edition of the Breakfast Show on Brila FM, he described it as a big achievement.

“It’s a big achievement I must say because to be in a big league is not easy for any goalkeeper. And for him to be transferred to Watford I say congratulations to him and to Nigeria entirely.

And speaking also on Brila FM, Baruwa said Okoye’s deal is a positive development for young goalkeepers.

Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Antonio Conte as their new manager on a two-year contract.

The London club confirmed Conte’s appointment in a statement released on their official website on Tuesday.


Conte takes over from Nuno Espírito Santo, who was sacked on Monday.

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Antonio Conte as our Head Coach on a contract until the summer of 2023, with an option to extend,” the club said.

Barcelona have sacked head coach Ronald Koeman after just 14 months in charge at the Nou Camp following Wednesday’s shock 1-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano.

Legendary Arsenal captain Thierry Henry has revealed why Lionel Messi is yet to impress in the French Ligue 1.

Messi featured against Marseille in his fourth match in Ligue 1 at the weekend and once again failed to find the net.

It is his worst goalscoring start to a league campaign since 2005, when he was embarking on his first full senior season.

The 34-year-old has been deployed on the right-hand side of a three-man attack for PSG under Mauricio Pochettino, with Neymar cutting in from the left and Kylian Mbappe in a central role.

PSG tweaked their formation on Sunday night from 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1, yet Messi’s right-sided position remained unchanged.

Yet Henry believes the formation and role in the team does not suit the Argentine, calling on Pochettino to consider shifting Messi into a more central position.

“Messi is isolated and does not touch the ball too much,” Henry said on Amazon Prime.

“I would not say that he is sad, but I see that his position is isolated.

“I prefer him in the centre, and I do not think he can make a difference from the right.

“He is having a bad time and the centre he can find rhythm.

“There has to be a solution found so that they [Messi, Mbappe and Neymar] can play together.

“I don’t have the exact data at a tactical level, but I think he is having less impact. He participates infrequently.”

Henry also believes that the emphasis of the PSG team means that it has become disjointed, with Mbappe still the central star within the side.

He has claimed that Pochettino’s side do not appear to be playing in unison and are far from being a cohesive attacking unit.

He added: “Messi doesn’t talk too much. He does it with the ball.

“At the moment, the team belongs to Kylian. It is he who makes PSG shine.

“The ball is looking more for Kylian and if there is more than one ‘driver’, the team cannot play in unison.

“On this team there is too much variance. They do not play at the same pace.”

Rangers Review columnist Garry Carmody believes Leon Balogun deserves to be rewarded with a new contract following his impressive displays for the club this season, reports Completesports.com.

Balogun, who linked up with the Gers on July 24, 2020 has been one of the top performers for the Scottish Premiership champions since his arrival at the club.

The 33-year-old’s contract will expire next summer but Carmody wants the centre-back to remain at the club beyond this season

“Central defence is one area that may come under particular scrutiny next summer. Will Goldson sign a new contract or look to move down south? Will Balogun sign a new contract? Will Katic return from loan? Will Simpson turn around his Rangers career or will the club look to move him on? If it’s true that you build from the back, that’s a concerning number of unknowns to have on the horizon,”writes Carmody.

“Steven Gerrard’s men should give an easy answer to one of those questions and sign Balogun up for another year.

“He thrives in a Rangers shirt. He has discussed his passion and enjoyment of playing for the club, particularly in the midst of taking the knee and the support he received. Turning 34 as his contract ends and may not be suited to play every week, but his experience could be vital as new players arrive.

“He currently plays in every game but has also shown he is suited to rotating and could continue doing that when the squad once more has a full complement of centre-backs.

“It’s a big compliment to Balogun that Rangers will lose him, Aribo and Bassey to the African Cup of Nations in January, and his loss will be as big to the team as that of Aribo.”

The ranking was released on FIFA’s official website on Thursday.

In Africa, the Eagles remain in fifth position behind Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco and AFCON champions Algeria.

Lone Stars of Liberia, who will host the Eagles in next month’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier, dropped six places from 144th to 150th.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner could be sidelined for a while after picking up injuries against Malmo in the Champions League.

The duo started up front against Malmo last night, but they were forced off the pitch during the opening half.

Lukaku won a penalty for the Blues in the 17th minute, but the rough challenge on him contributed to his early substitution as he twisted his ankle.

Towards the end of the half, Werner pulled up with an evident hamstring concern. He was grimacing with pain as he was assisted down the tunnel.
Speaking after the 4-0 win, Tuchel confirmed injuries for both strikers, and acknowledged that they could be out of action for some period of time.
“Romelu twisted his ankle when he was fouled in the box and Timo has a hamstring injury, so it will take a while for both of them,” he told Chelsea website.

“We need more examinations to be more precise but they will be out for some matches.”

The Blues have a favourable schedule ahead with Norwich City, Newcastle United and Burnley to face in the Premier League before the international break.

All three clubs are lying in the relegation zone at the moment, and the Blues have an excellent chance of maintaining their top spot in the coming weeks.

However, the absence of Lukaku and Werner is a huge blow for the club.
Tuchel now has to reshuffle his attacking options for the matches ahead.

Kai Havertz could be a choice to play in the false number nine position, having done so on multiple occasions during the back end of last season.

The German has had limited game time off the bench recently, but will have gained confidence after finding the back of the net during the 4-0 rout of Malmo.

The Blues are currently second in their Champions League group with six points, three behind Juventus, who also have the head-to-head advantage over them.

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund are targeting Genk forward Paul Onuachu as replacement for Erling Haaland, reports Completesports.com.

Norway striker Haaland is expected to leave the club next summer with Chelsea, PSG, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United among his suitors.


According to Sky Sport transfer expert Marc Behrenbeck, Dortmund have Onuachu on the list of strikers to replace the Norwegian.


The 27-year-old has been linked with a number of top clubs in Europe following a stellar campaign for Genk in the Belgian Pro League last season.

The tall striker scored scored 29 times in 33 league outings for the Smurfs last term.

This season, he has scored nine goals in 10 league games so far and one more goal each in the Champions League qualifiers and the Europa League.

Liverpool have been told to pay a fee in the region of £34m if they are to prise Karim Adeyemi away from Red Bull Salzburg, according to a report.

The 19-year-old forward has been in sensational form for the Austrian outfit so far this campaign, scoring 11 goals in 16 appearances across all competitions, including two strikes in the Champions League.

This form has seen Adeyemi linked with several top clubs across Europe, including Jurgen Klopp’s side and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

According to sport.ORF.at, Salzburg have placed a £34m price tag on the teenager, who still has three years remaining on his contract.

Black Queens of Ghana assistant captain Fafali Dumehasi insists the team is capable of beating Nigeria in their 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, reports Completesports.com.

Both fierce continental rivals will slug it out at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in the first leg of this fixture on Wednesday (today).

Despite the pedigree and depth of quality in the Nigeria camp, Dumehasi is undeterred, stating her team aim to cause a second upset on Nigerian soil since 2002.

“We’ve trained enough for the first leg match against Nigeria in Lagos,” the Police Machine goalkeeper, told CAFOnline.com.
“Our dream is to qualify to the next stage of the qualifying series, then the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and later the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

Former West Ham and Juventus forward, Paolo Di Canio has described Super Eagles star, Victor Osimhen as a striker with a different spirit that is not dull like Romelu Lukaku.

Di Canio made this known in an interview with Sky Sports Italia’s Calcio Club, where he slammed the Belgian international for his recent goal drought at Chelsea despite his early goal scoring form in the Premier League.

He claimed that Osimhen can not be compared to Lukaku because the Nigerian international is not dull like him in front of goal.

“I heard [Inter icon turned pundit Giuseppe] Bergomi comparing [Victor] Osimhen and Lukaku. But Osimhen has a different spirit, he’s not dull like him,” Di Canio told Sky Sports Italia’s Calcio Club.

“When the difficulty increased, he scored no goals in five games with Chelsea. And it’s not Chelsea’s fault, they are top of the table even without his goals.”

Former Nigerian forward, Jonathan Akpoborie believes Super eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has what it takes to fill into the shoes of late Rashidi Yekini in the senior national.

Akpoborie stated this on the backdrop of Osimhen’s impressive goal scoring form Napoli in the Serie A this ongoing season.

Recall that the Nigerian international netted the winning goal in the team’s 1-0 win over Torino 1-0 on Sunday.

Samuel Chukwueze made his return to action from injury but ended on the losing side as Villarreal lost 2-1 to Osasuna in Sunday’s LaLiga game, Completesports.com reports.

Nigeria’s silver medal winner at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Blessing Oborududu has been elected into the Athletes’ commission of United World Wrestling (UWW).

Oborududu is the only African out of seven athletes who will be representing all the Wrestlers on the governing body.

Oborududu who will represent Africa for the next four years, polled 90 votes out of 397 to get elected.

Founded in 1912, the United World Wrestling is the international governing body for amateur wrestling.

It’s duties include overseeing wrestling at the Olympics and also presides over international competitions for various forms of wrestling.

Oborududu became the first Nigerian athlete in history to win a medal in Wrestling at the Olympics.

After a remarkable run at the games, she eventually lost to an American in the final of the women’s 68kg.

Former Nigerian forward, Victor Ikpeba has kicked against the call by some Nigerians and ex-internationals demanding the sack of Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles coach.

Recall that after the team’s shocking loss against the Central Africa Republic (CAR) in a 2022 World Cup qualifiers at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, there was call for Rohr’s resignation.

The German tactician who has been with the Super Eagles since 2016, has been criticized for not making positive impacts in the senior national team in terms of winning titles.

However, Ikpeba during Monday Night Football Programme on Supersports, said that Rohr has done enough to remain as coach of the Super Eagles.
