SportsRonaldo Becomes Joint Highest Goalscorer In Football History by solbase10(op): 10:06am On Jan 11, 2021
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has equalled Josef Bican as top goalscorer in football history after getting among the goals in Juventus’ 3-1 home win against Sassuolo on Sunday.

Ronaldo scored his 22nd goal for club and country this season as Juventus moved up to fourth after leaving it late to see off Sassuolo.

As Ronaldo sealed the victory on Sunday,he netted his 759th goal for both club and country – a record now only matched by Bican, the Austrian-Czech striker who played between 1931 and 1955.

Aaron Ramsey and Danilo were also on the scoresheet for Juventus as they followed up their 3-1 victory at AC Milan in style.

Andrea Pirlo’s side currently sit in fourth in Serie A, just a point behind Roma in third who have played a match more.

The visitors, who have been one of European football’s surprise packages this season, were reduced to 10 men in first-half stoppage time when former West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang fouled Federico Chiesa.

Danilo then put Andrea Pirlo’s men ahead five minutes after the restart, hammering a 30-yard thunderbolt into the bottom right-hand corner of Andrea Consigli’s goal, with the flying Italian nowhere near it.

The hosts couldn’t press home their one-man advantage though and were pegged back eight minutes later, when Gregoire Defrel pushed Hamed Traore’s pass between Juve centre backs Merih Demiral and Leonardo Bonucci with his left foot, before producing a sliding right-foot finish to beat Wojciech Szczesny.

Sassuolo looked like upsetting the odds once again this term and rode their luck when Chiesa struck a post, but Aaron Ramsey came to his side’s rescue, turning in Gianluca Frabotta’s cross to make it 2-1.

Ronaldo then added the third after calmly controlling a long ball over the top by Danilo before charging into the penalty area and slotting past Consigli.

SportsPele Insists Ronaldo Yet To Beat All-time Goal Record by solbase10(op): 10:52am On Jan 06, 2021
Brazilian legend Pele insists and Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has not yet beaten his all-time record for scoring goals, updating his tally to 1,283.

Ronaldo made history on Sunday with a brace in the 4-1 Serie A victory over Udinese.

That took him to 758 goals in official matches, ahead of Pele’s recorded 757.

He is now only behind Josef Bican’s remarkable 805 goals, set from 1931 to his retirement in 1957 in Austria and the Czech Republic.

However, just hours after CR7 reached 758 goals, Pele updated the biography on his official Instagram page with this note.

“Leading Goal Scorer of All Time (1,283).”

This is a heavily-disputed tally that includes goals scored during friendlies, tours and testimonials.

Pele played from 1956-77 for Santos, the New York Cosmos and his nation Brazil.

If Ronaldo were to calculate the goals he scored in friendlies, then it may well be able to rival Pele’s claim.

SportsAmuneke: I Can’t Be Assistant Coach Under Rohr by solbase10(op): 10:40am On Dec 22, 2020
Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke has stated he can never be assistant coach to Super Eagles handler Gernot Rohr.

Amuneke made this known in a chat on Brila FM on Monday.

Reports has it that Amuneke is being considered for the assistant coach position under Rohr.

But rhe 1994 African Player of the Year made it clear he has coached Tanzania’s men’s national team so cannot take up the role of assistant to the German.

“Rohr is the coach of Nigeria, I was once a coach of Tanzania not the youth team, so why must I come back to assist Rohr. Why are we trying to belittle ourselves.”

Amuneke qualified Tanzania for the 2019 AFCON which was their first since the 1980 edition held in Nigeria.

He led the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria Nigeria to win the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.

SportsAmokachi Criticizes NFF Over Huge Compensation Clause In Rohr’s Contract by solbase10(op): 10:05am On Dec 21, 2020
Daniel Amokachi has carpetted the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for inserting a huge $2m as compensation clause in the contract of Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr, reports Completesports.com.

Rohr, who took charge of the three-time African champions in 2016, penned an extension early this year.

“For the administration to bring somebody like Oliseh and not giving him time because he’s Nigerian and they let go,” Amokachi told Brila FM.

“To bring in somebody like Amuneke and not giving him time then they let him go. Then you bring a new coach where those two coaches are far better than him; pedigree-wise and portfolio-wise.

“But still, they gave the machinery a lot of money, $60 plus with all the bonuses, if they play two matches in a month, then you’re talking over $100,000.

“And then at the end of the day, you put a $2m clause on a coach that has never won anything. A coach that came from Burkina Faso to Tunisia then to Nigeria and you put a $2m clause, that’s the first I’m hearing such.

“If you were bringing Guardiola you can put $10m if he says he wants it because you know who he is; he has won laurels. But for a coach that has not done anything, not achieved anything and you put a $2m clause? There’s a lot of failure in that.

“I’ll not rate them (NFF) out of 10, but all these things I’ve broken down will tell anybody with common sense where I’m coming from.”

SportsPremier League: Wolves Late Goal Sink Chelsea by solbase10(op): 11:59am On Dec 16, 2020
A late goal from Pedro Neto sealed a 2-1 win for Wolverhampton Wanderers over visiting Chelsea in Tuesday’s Premier League game.

A win for Chelsea would have taken them to the top of the Premier League table.

The Blues have now lost back-to-back games in the Premier League for the first time since December 2019.

Olivier Giroud opened scoring for Chelsea in the 49th minute as his volley squeezed over the line.

Wolves were back on level terms in the 66th minute through Daniel Podence, who cut inside and flashed a fierce shot past Edouard Mendy.

And in the 95th minute an incisive counter attack end with Neto getting space on the edge of the box and picking out the bottom corner.

SportsRohr: Okoye Not Yet Super Eagles First Choice by solbase10(op): 10:15am On Dec 15, 2020
Gernot Rohr says Maduka Okoye is not yet the first choice of the Super Eagles as he still has a lot of work to do.

Okoye has been in superb form for his Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam keeping four clean sheets so far.

He kept goal for the Eagles in their four games this year keeping out the likes of Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa.

However, Rohr says the young shot stopper has not yet made the position is own.

“All the goalkeepers in the team have been first choice for some time and now it’s Okoye’s turn,” Rohr told owngoalnigeria.com.

“He has to work really hard to hang on to the position because the others are eager to be there. So it is not his own yet.

“He has done well with his club and that’s what you need to be in our team.”

SportsUwua Questions Bosso’s Appointment As Flying Eagles Coach by solbase10(op): 10:14am On Dec 14, 2020
Former Flying Eagles coach Godwin Uwua has questioned the appointment of Ladan Bosso as handler of the country’s U-20 men’s team.

The Flying Eagles crashed out of the WAFU B Zonal qualifiers in Porto Novo, Benin Republic after finishing last in their group that had Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire.

After two rounds of games the Flying Eagles drew 1-1 against Cote d’Ivoire in their first game and lost 1-0 to Ghana.

Their ouster means they will not be at next year’s U-20 AFCON in Mauritania.

Uwua who took the Flying Eagles to second place finish at the 2007 U-20 AFCON in Congo and also qualify for the World Cup the same year, described the elimination as unfortunate.

In a chat on Brila FM, Uwua said:”Bosso was an assistant coach to me in 2007 and when the team qualified for the world cup, I resigned and went to South Africa and Bosso lead the team to Canada nothing came out of it.

“Coaching is a professional job, here in Nigeria they turn it into politics they just bring somebody there.

“What is the record of Bosso as a coach in this country? I was not surprised by the result.”

SportsOzil’s Arsenal Exit 90% Confirmed Ahead January Transfer by solbase10(op): 9:44am On Dec 08, 2020
Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil is 90 per cent close to joining Fenerbahce in the January transfer window according to one of the Turkish side’s chiefs.

Ozil has long been linked with the Arsenal exit door having fallen out of favour under Mike Arteta.

He has been frozen out at the Emirates after being omitted from the Premier League and Europa League squads.

But Fenerbahce congress member Murat Zorlu is “90 per cent sure” Ozil will make a move to Turkey in the January transfer window.

The World Cup winner’s contract expires in the summer and Arsenal are desperate to get him off the wage bill.

He signed a mammoth deal worth £350,000-a-week in Arsene Wenger’s final season which has made it hard for the north Londoners to find a buyer.

But his nightmare spell at the Emirates could soon be over if reports in Turkey are to be believed.

Zorlu told Sport Digitale : “A source, who’s very well connected to the club has told me that Mesut Ozil is likely to become a Fenerbahce player during the next transfer window.

“I would say 90% he will join us in one month.”

Ozil has regularly been linked with a move to one of Turkey’s top clubs.

SportsDare To NFF: Hold Rohr To Higher Standards by solbase10(op): 2:53pm On Nov 25, 2020
The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has given the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) the marching orders to hold Super Eagles head coach , Gernot Rohr to the higher standards contained in his contract following the team’s dismal two-leg draw against Sierra Leone in the 2022 AFCON Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Minster of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare made this position known at a meeting with NFF officials on Tuesday to review the Technical Report of the Nigeria/Sierra Leone AFCON qualifiers and other matters.

He said, “The recent dismal performance of the Super Eagles in their qualifiers against SIerra Leone has raised a few concerns and brought to fore the need to do a quick critique. The government, while concerned about the dismal performance and non discernible pattern of play and team harmony in the Super Eagles is looking beyond the outcome of the Nigeria versus SIerra Leone matches and AFCON. We are looking at the present and future administration of football that speaks to the development of the front room and backroom.

“The NFF must tightly hold the head coach to the KPIs in his contract. Thus, we cannot wait for those conditions to come to life, before we tighten the screws or demand a higher or better performance, better technical depth, better player mix and team harmony and a functional national team, else Nigeria and Football lovers in Nigeira will be the greatest losers. In this area, NFF must take necessary steps and actions beyond Rohr to protect our football fortunes.

“The federal government will ask the tough and relevant questions. The NFF should do the same The right of Nigerians to ask of government and indeed NFF explanations for dismal performances and football administration cannot be simply characterized as interference. On our part, we will work to support the NFF but we will also demand for answers and changes too on behalf of Nigerians. CAF and FIFA while we appreciate their working partnerships are expected to support Nigeria in its quest to ensure an effectual football administration.

We must raise the necessary interrogatories about the general administration around the team, the absence of local content or home based players in the team, the domestic league development and growth, issues of ethics, nutrition, Psychology, content and so on.

SportsSierra Leone Midfielder, Strasser: Osimhen’s Injury Helped Us Comeback Vs Super by solbase10(op): 12:11pm On Nov 24, 2020
Leone Stars of Sierra Leone midfielder Rodney Strasser has attributed his side’s surprise comeback against Super Eagles to the absence of injured Victor Osimhen.

Sierra Leone made a shock comeback by cancelling a 4-0 deficit to draw 4-4 in the first-leg of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers in Benin.

Osimhen, who was on target in the game, was replaced when the game was 4-2 after dislocating his shoulder before the Leone Stars went on to complete the fightback.

And in a chat with top Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba, Strasser admitted Osimhen gave them problems while on the pitch.

“I told the guys if we score 4-3 they’re gonna pee on their pants. When we scored 4-2 they came out and then 4-3 and I said we need to go and then it was good for us when Osimhen went out. It was good for us because he was the one that was keeping it up there. He was the trouble guy in the field, he alone can keep two or three players but when he went out it was better for us.”

Strasser stated that the poor state of the Siaka Stevens stadium did not only affected the Eagles but also the Leone Stars.

“We all normally win at home but we had a problem because our pitch wasn’t that good even for us because most of us play abroad, it wasn’t good for us also, not only for Nigeria, that’s what people don’t understand.

“It was difficult for us because we only trained for just two days on the pitch. It was okay for the local players. We used two defenders based at home because our captain was disqualified and another player was on the bench, he plays in Greece.

“The home-based guys had less problem, two of our defenders and the goalkeeper were home-based, so those were comfortable on the pitch but the rest were professionals and it was a little difficult for us to play on the pitch. We went for the win, we had a couple of chances, Nigeria also had chances but it was like a normal game, a 50-50 because of the pitch.”

And on comments made by NFF president Amaju Pinnick urging the Eagles to go to Freetown and win 4-0, the midfielder described it as disrespectful.

He added:”Everyone saw the video, it felt disrespectful, though Nigeria is bigger than us in everything, population and Nigeria is an African giant. It made the fans angry and they were like we need to win, we need to beat them because he said they need to come and beat us 4-0, a wake-up call should not come from Sierra Leone.

“Wake-up calls should come from countries like Sierra Leone, not Brazil because Brazil is a bigger team. If Nigeria loses to Brazil, it’s normal. The game in Nigeria was a wake-up call because we drew there, coming from 4 goals down, that was a wake-up call. But he said that wasn’t a wake-up call because you need a wake-up call from Argentina, for me that was a wake-up call.”

SportsHotsports Welcome Ibitoye Back To The Beat by solbase10(op): 11:32am On Nov 03, 2020
After a five-and-a-half-year hiatus from active sports journalism, Toyin Ibitoye, returned to the beat last week following his completion of an acclaimed and highly successful tour of duty as the Media Officer of the Super Eagles.

And leading sports production and marketing company, HotSports Nigeria Ltd has finalised plans to formally welcome back the brilliant and resourceful purveyor of sports news and information whose experience cuts across the print and electronic media.

The event slated for Studio 2 inside the Company’s sprawling television production complex in Ikeja, Lagos takes place 4pm, Sunday, November 8, 2020.

Leading the welcome party will be Taye Ige, President/CEO assisted by top officials of the Company. Expected to grace the event will be Ibitoye’s friends and family members, top officials of the Nigerian Football Federation and other leading lights of the football confraternity in Nigeria, sports editors and managers of Nigerian newspapers and programmes on radio and television.

In a release he personally signed yesterday, Ige said “On behalf of the Teams at both HotSports Nigeria Ltd & HS Studios, Nigeria’s leading sports marketing company and owners of the largest television production complex in the west coast of Africa, I wish to extend my heartfelt salutation and congratulations to our colleague, Toyin Ibitoye on the successful completion of his tour of duty.

“Relevant members of the HotSports Team and I would like to recall, with immense gratitude, how pleasurable it was working with you in the last five-and-a-half years especially during our several activations in furtherance of our roles as both the official media partner as well as marketing consultant to the Nigeria Football Federation. We all know how difficult access to the national team camp can sometimes be. This became significantly easy for us to achieve under your watch, making both our editorial and marketing activation responsibilities much easier to carry out. It has thus been a privilege working with you and now it’s an honour to celebrate the legacy of hard work and exceptional dedication to duty you have left behind for your successor.

“Secondly, that the Super Eagles largely delighted us with good results on the field of play during your tenure, qualifying for both the AFCON and the FIFA World Cup finals in grand style (in some cases two matches ahead) is also evidently traceable to the quality of “technical assistance” you afforded the Team’s chief coach, Mr. Gernot Rorh. It is not for nothing that, in informed circles, Toyin, you were known as the de facto assistant to the national coach as you were reputed to put at his disposal your awesomely rich knowledge of Nigerian players, their current status in their various Clubs both home and abroad as well as advise him on the best formations to adopt based on options of players available at any given time.”

Ige concluded; “It is for these services to our Company and to our dear country that we wish to thank you and formally welcome you back to the profession we know you have always loved. We know your passion for sports journalism and we are almost certain that you can’t wait to get back to it.”

SportsPremier League: Ajayi Benched As West Brom Winless Run Continue After Draw Vs Bu by solbase10(op): 11:10am On Oct 20, 2020
Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi did not feature for West Bromwich Albion who were forced to a 0-0 draw at home by Burnley, in the Premier League on Monday night, Completesports.com reports.

West Brom are still in search of a first Premier League win after five games (three defeats, two draws).

Ajayi who was in action for the Eagles in their two friendly games against Algeria and Tunisia, has made four appearances in the league.

It was a game West Brom believe they should have taken all three points having made more attempts on goal.

The Baggies went close as early as the 4th minute after Matheus Pereira found Filip Krovinović on the edge of the box and the Croatian curled an effort just wide of the post.

In the 20th minute Karlan Grant went close after Pereira slotted him through on goal, but his left-footed effort rose just above the bar.

Burnley had their own opportunity which came in the 28th minute but Sam Johnstone saved excellently from a close-range Ashley Barnes effort.

On the hour mark West Brom could have broken the deadlock after Grady Diangana worked his magic then hit a powerful strike which Nick Pope saved well.

Four minutes later Burnley almost scored through Chris Wood but his header came off the bar.

In the 69th minute Johnstone made a superb save from a Barnes header, Wood headed the rebound against the bar, but was offside.

And with 11 minutes left in the game Pope made a super save to deny Pereira at the backpost following a lofted Townsend cross.

And at Elland Road Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Leeds United 1-0.

A Raul Jimenez goal in the 70th minute sealed the win for Wolves.

The captain of Leone Stars of Sierra Leone, Umaru Bangura, fitness coach Phillip Kor and an official Eric Fomba, have tested positive for coronavirus.

This was confirmed in a statement from the Sierra Leone Football Association.

SportsIheanacho, Musa To Lead Eagles’ Attack Vs Tunisia As Rohr Targets First Win by solbase10(op): 12:27pm On Oct 13, 2020
Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho and Al Nassr forward Ahmed Musa will be leading the Super Eagles attack when Nigeria take on the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in the second of their October friendlies today at the Jacques Lemans Arena in Sankt Veit an der Glan, Austria.

Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr, is set to field the experienced duo as he hopes to record his first win of the year with the Eagles after losing 1-0 against Algeria in the first of the Super Eagles’ two October friendlies last Friday.

Iheanacho and Musa started from the bench in the loss to Algeria with the Leicester forward coming on for Paul Onuachu in the 67th minute while the Eagles captain replaced Samuel Chukwueze in the 75th minute of the encounter.

The Eagles put up a lackluster performance against the African champions last weekend with Onuachu struggling to hold his own as the team’s arrowhead.

Iheanacho and Musa will have to prove they still have what it takes to lead the Eagles attack as Nigeria look to record back-to-back wins against Tunisia whom they defeated 1-0 in the Third/Fourth Place match of the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

Also set to return to the Eagles starting line-up against Tunisia is Leganes defender, Kenneth Omeruo.

Remarkably, the trio of Iheanacho, Musa and Omeruo recently staged a return to the Eagles squad as they were not part of the squad that played a 2-2 and 1-1 draws against Ukraine and Brazil in the international friendlies in September and October last year.

Iheanacho was not listed for the games due to poor form, while Musa and Omeruo were ruled out because of injuries.

Musa and Omeruo featured as the Eagles beat Tunisia to the AFCON bronze last year courtesy of Odion Ighalo’s 3rd minute goal while Iheanacho was left out of the AFCON squad.

The Eagles last winning outing was in the 4-2 away win against Lesotho in an AFCON qualifier played in November last year.

SportsRohr To Make Changes For Super Eagles Vs Tunisia by solbase10(op): 11:09am On Oct 12, 2020
Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr is expected to make a number of changes in his starting line-up for Tuesday’s friendly against Tunisia following his side’s poor showing against Algeria, reports Completesports.com.

The West Africans fell 1-0 to the African champions last Friday at the Worthersee Stadium, Klangefurt.

The Super Eagles were completely outplayed by the Algerians with Ramy Bensebaini netting the winner in the sixth minute.

Left-back Zaidu Sanusi, Tyronne Ebuehi, Leon Balogun, Maduka Okoye and Alex Iwobi all put up impressive displays for the Super Eagles, while majority of their teammates struggled all through.

Genk forward Paul Onuachu had a disappointing game, while the likes of Semi Ajayi, Samuel Chukwueze, William Troost-Ekong and Samuel Kalu were not at their best.

Rohr is likely to drop Onuachu for either Kelechi Iheanacho and Cyriel Dessers against the Carthage Eagles.

Talented winger Chidera Ejuke also likely get the chance to make his debut against the former African champions.
