Equiano would have been another of the many uneducated slave if not that his most significant slave master, Michael Henry Pascal, took it upon himself to send Equiano to Britain for the specific purpose of enrollment into formal schooling.

Equiano did not become the first Nigerian able to read or right of his own free will as you ignorantly brag so why will any knowledgeable Yoruba envy Igbos because of his achievement that is a product of good fortune and the goodwill of another?

He was a beneficiary of the benevolence of a slave master coinciding with the fact he was one of the earlier Nigerian victims of the transatlantic slave trade but with an eventual path different to most slaves who ended up working as uneducated servants in plantations in the Americas.

Equiano's significant slave master was an Officer in the British Royal Navy who made Equiano his valet. Equiano therefore mainly worked mainly on ships learning good skills and traveling where his master went.

He was not sent to the American cotton fields as was usual then for most slave who were then neglected and not formally educated. Instead his slave master eventually sent him Britain to be formally educated.

Equiano was an enslaved child, born in 1745, who ended up in Britain so of course he had the chance, per circumstances, as one of the early victims of the transatlantic slave trade beginning the 16th century, to recieve formal education.


Remember the British outlawed slavery in 1807? Equiano, long before that, was a victim of the transatlantic slave trade with routes to the British West Indies and Americas.

If was Michael Henry Pascal, Equaino's eventual slave master, who sent Equiano to Britian to attend school so he could read and write. His education, denied many other slaves, was directly due to the benevolence of his slave master.


The relevant point is that Yorubas born in the 19th century, from circa 1825 after the abolition of slavery, took advantage of the improved chances to obtain formal education (more direct interaction with the West, specifically the UK) to produce 7 out of the only 8 Nigerian medicial practitioners of the time.

A very remarkable achievement for that period different to the path to formal education of Equiano who was taken as a slave child to the Caribbean on a ship and sent onwards to Britain where he eventually became an educated free man.

Equiano could almost not miss formal education whereas the doctors I cited all sought medical training and had the intellect to gain it as born free men after the end of slavery.

Two months ago, Nairametrics, an online business tabloid wrote about the ways in which Abia can reach its true potential as an african economic powerhouse.

Its has the Market (Aba), the Brand (Made in Aba), the 13% oil revenue of NDDC and of course, the technical know-how (technocrats).

But what has delayed it's progress in IGR so far today? Poor political will on timely execution of infrastructure and government corruption. This has rendered its progress INCONSISTENT. This isnt to say that Abians aren't thriving as individuals (due to ease of doing business), however we must understand that lack of proactive sustenance of government policy on infrastructure has been responsible for shooting Abia's IGR on the foot.

Abia and Abia people needs to do more to boost its revenue CONSISTENTLY. During the first quarter (January till March, 2021), Abia IGR slowed. It can improve if the government blocks every economic leakage and quit politicizing every policy.
