Politics › Re: Nigeria and the Politics of Nollywood by SonOfEl(m): 12:21pm On Sep 14, 2023 |
Jacobiceprince8: For the sake of history, I would dabble into this debate of: "yorubas own Nollywood "... and I hope Nigerians would agree with me as I explain the TRUTH.
The Yorubas had a headstart with stage acting and drama series- this isn't in contest. However, that stage acting and drama was not Nollywood. It was not. Yoruba drama pre-dated Nollywood, but it was not Nollywood, neither did it metamorphose into Nollywood. Also, yourba drama was restricted to yorubaland. No one outside yorubaland watched Herbert Ogunde and Co.
Let's get this fact straight. The drama series that Herbert Ogunde and Co were doing was not Nollywood. It remains stage drama.
Nollywood as an industry started with the movie- Living in Bondage, as well documented. That movie launched motion picture in Nigeria, and started what is today known as Nollywood. And honestly, it was a purely Igbo affair. The Upper Iweka Road, and Pound Road Aba, were signatures of Nigerian movies at the time, and there is no yoruba equivalent of Iweka road or Pound Road, Aba.
Whilst yorubas can claim their stage drama, they must distinguish between early stage acting and Nollywood, which was launched, developed, commercialised and made global by the effort of igbos. The yorubas did not contribute to the global scale of Nollywood. Go all over Africa and Europe, they know mama gee, Sam loco, Pete edochie, Aki, Genevieve, jim iyke, Liz Benson, Eucharia Anuobi, Ken Okonkwo, Clem Ohameze, Ini Edo, Ukwa, etc. No yoruba actor comes close. This is the Truth. In terms of movies, the yorubas have very few that went global as Igodo, Ijele, Rattlesnake, etc. The only notable yoruba movie was Sango.
We see time and time again, how yorubas claim things they don't own. They had earlier claim that University of Ibadan was the first University in Nigeria, which is factually untrue, because what they had in Ibadan was a college of the University of London. It was far from an independent university. But yorubas claimed history that University of Ibadan was the first university in Nigeria, even though the University of Nigeria, built in Nsukka was already in existence. It is the same logic yorubas have applied to Nollywood. They counted the college in Ibadan as the start of the University of Ibadan, which is wrong. The UI started with an act of Parliament.
The same way yourbas claim to be the most educated tribe in Nigeria, again untrue. Yes, yorubas had a head start with education, but the igbos have long overtaken them. That is how yorubas claim everything.
Let history know that yoruba stage drama was not Nollywood, neither did it metamorphose into Nollywood. Even till date, yoruba movies are still a subset of nollywood, hardly ever watched outside yorubaland. I, for one, cant count any yoruba movie i have watched.
Nollywood, as a motion picture industry and as rightly documented, started with Living in Bondage. And it was started by the Igbos. Enlightened yorubas know this.
However, today's Nollywood has grown beyond the igbos and is now a national industry. And every Nigerian has a stake, regardless of ethnicity. But, the igbos should be given their due credit. They started, developed, commercialised and took Nollywood global. This is the Truth for history. Don't mind them my brother, they like to claim everything due to their self-esteem issues. When foreign media coined the term Nollywood, they weren't referring to ogunde cinema of the 60s or the silent films of the 20s and 30s in colonial Nigeria. They were referring to commercialized film making of the early 90s that set Africa home videos aflame. By the way University of Ibadan was established in 1962 with Prof. Kenneth Dike as it's first VC. University College Ibadan established in 1948 had no VC, or power to award degrees, or a senate. UCI was a degree awarding institution, not a university. Even the University staff themselves know this. |

Finance Manufacturing Telecommunications Building and construction Real estate Food and beverages Road Transportation Hotels and luxury like Sheraton, And the rest
Among the top players are foreign investments in manufacturing, telecommunications, wholesale and retail outlets like ShopRite and many others
Please mention one that is dominated by igbos. Among the ones I listed, they are controlled by Yorubas and foreign investors. We also have northerners contribution like Dangote. We have oil and gas companies headquartered in Lagos. For example, I can say telecommunications by Mike Adenuga. Or entertainment industry controlled by Yorubas
Just mention one for Igbos This your dick measuring is a testament to your insecurity and inferiority complex....everything from finance to sport to entertainment to manufacturing, we are the non-indigenes that dominate....no cap |

Omoawoke2: Here’s it
At least southwest states are well above southeast and the Ebonyi is still poorer than all southwest states Dey play.... Lagos is more or less inhabited by many igbos....running private businesses and employing more people.... South west isn't automatically Yoruba in this sense, however, we all know that Aba, Onitsha, Nnewi, Abiriba and all of southeast are predominantly run by igbos in commerce and trade. So do your permutations. Portharcourt, Iwo-Ibadan, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and other major city areas have businesses own predominantly by the igbos. Igbo amaka |

My candid advice to OP Is to send an elderly person to go do investigation as normal igbo tradition to find out if she's truly OSU ... If she's then na to back out because it's like one trying to marry SS while you are AS blood group... The stigma and discrimination will affect his generations... Blaze14k: I would like to use this opportunity to seek guidance based on the issue I have on ground. I believe it's igbos especially elderly person who is in a better position to give me a reasonable explanation. I told my mum my girlfriend is from ohafia, abia state and she instantly told me I can't get married to her. Her reason is because people from ohafia, arochukwu, izombe, and few other places in abia state are regarded as OSU. I complained to other members of my family but they also rejected her.
I have made some research personally and found out people from other part of igboland marry from those places. Now my question is why are they strongly rejecting her cos it doesn't make sense to call everybody from different local government in abia state OSU.
I've made more research on the girls family and found out they are king makers and her father belongs to eze's cabinet.
Her father and mine are no longer alive. They both have a traditional title and belong to eze's cabinet too. Please I need your advice cos I really want marry this girl. I also know that people encounter alot of difficulties when they want to get married. So I need a clarification from someone who has extensive knowledge on igbo tradition. Thank you Oga please free the lady abeg. You aren't man enough to marry her. Her man will come. Ndi mmam si.... continue holding your mom's apron. If you know Aro or Ohafia history, you will feel intimidated. You mom and her relatives feels intimidated by them. I am not from there but I know their history. Aba market and industrial cluster is the Livewire of Abia State. A lot of Lecturers, Lawyers, Engineers, School Teachers, and even Doctors, etc have small shops or stalls they use as side hustle to sustain themselves, as salary no dey come (before Alex Ottis tenure began).
Abia being the 3rd least poverty stricken state after Ondo and Lagos (recent NBS MPI 2022 data) shows how resilient the Abia people (both indigenes and residents) are. What we need is Excellent Infrastructure and Fiscal Discipline from the state government. |

horsepower102: I will be the first to admit that Aba is living below its potential.
But when you compare Aba to so many other Nigerian cities, the difference is very clear.
I still don’t understand the level of hate that city received on nairaland even though, it still looked better than so many other Nigerian cities.
A city may have bad roads in highly trafficked areas but those areas don’t define the whole city.
Thankfully Otti is fixing those roads but I also give some credit to ikpeazu who also worked on some roads even though he started late.
Besides Aba is not a state capital. I have been saying it on nairaland since, but haters and gullible abians continued their noise. |

Deede Mmamma o...,
Congratulations on your indisputable victory at the just concluded gubernatorial election in Abia State. We Abians are proud to say you are our very own, a technocrat extraordinaire with a passion for human and capital development.
Abia State, with all its promises, is on the trenches. Thanks to the crop of mediocre governor's we have had. Abians initially gave each incoming leader a benefit of doubt (despite knowing how they rigged their way into the coffers of the state) just as the late PDP President Yaradua was given in 2007. While history will be kind to Yaradua, it's not the case with these PDP governors.
Now the mantle of Leadership has been handed down to you by the good people (and residents) of Abia State, do not disappoint us. Abia State may be the 3rd least poverty stricken state in Nigeria (based on NBS 2022 MPI Statistics), it only looks good ON PAPER. Abia today as you know is a Shadow of itself. Abia State is naked and neglected. If the FG neglects us, should the State government neglects its own people?
Remember the enviable footprints of our past leaders MICHAEL OKPARA (Premier of Former Eastern region) and SAM MBAKWE (Governor of Old Imo State) and make your own indelible print in the positive sands of time. Abia State isn't short of sons and daughters who are competent enough to drive development in the state with you. They are everywhere. Engage them and ignore charlatans.
Apart from the monthly Federal Allocation, plug the leakages that is rife in our other sources of revenue:
1. Aba Market and Industrial cluster 2. 13% derivation from NDDC
Also, see the creating more revenue channels through: 1. Tourism (Azumini blue river, War Museum, Aro Ibini Ukpabi shrine, etc) 2. Sports (Enyimba FC, Nigeria's most successful football club and Abia Warriors FC)
Remember Abia State needs infrastructural renewal. As a technocrat with a knack for wooing investors (as you did in Diamond bank), create a public-private partnership for building long lasting roads, bridges and a befitting seaport (Obuaku Seaport Project). We can reinvent Abia to be the mecca of industrialization in Africa with your leadership.
Keep away from charlatans, be diplomatic and compassionate in your discourse with pro-biafrans (MASSOB, IPOB, BZM, etc). Show them real development and welfare in order to convince and not to coerce them into building a new Abia State of Nigeria.
As the CSO of the state, arrest troublemakers who hide under agitations. Arrest criminals who bring disrepute to the state. Lastly, SALARIES OF CIVIL SERVANTS MUST BE PAID IN FULL. You have done it before in the private sector, you can do it again in the public sector.
Yagaziere gi deede'm. I am looking Forward to see you shine for Ndi Abia State.

akpumping7720: I am not a writer because I don't plan to become one now or in the nearest future so please manage my use of words.
I hardly advise people especially adults because I have this belief that a person above 18 years should be able to reason and do things in the normal way.
I hard to force myself to write this because I know it will not go viral due to my style of writing. Infact I will be so happy to pay a prolific writer whom I can pour my heart to while he writes in a more captivating way so that it can go viral.
Let me go straight to the point; I am writing to my Igbo brothers to see beyond what is really happening in Nigeria politics today. I am always sad when I see influencers like David Hundeyin, Aisha Yesufu, Chude and the others slandering and dishing out propagandas towards other political opponents. You might call me whatever names you like or you might call me a bigot; it's fine. But I will just pour out my mind and move on.
Beginning from 1960, the 3 major ethnics have tasted the presidency during the military era, Aguyi Ironsi, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Tafawa Balewa, the first Yoruba man to become the head of state is Olusegun Obasanjo. I don't want to dwell much on past history so as not to open healing wounds.
The damages these influencers are causing the Igbos will mar future chances of Igbo presidency; Soludo gave comments on all these but he was bullied and Insulted online. People who have worked beyond just their circle of friends or tribes alone knows how politics works in Nigeria. We all say a picture of Jonathan with Tinubu online in a happy mood. Despite all the attacks Tinubu media team launched against Jonathan government prior to the build up to 2015 elections. How come such person will still be laughing with someone who took the presidency from him? But what most people don't know, is that sensible politicians play what we call underground games and that t is how politics is played.
In politics you don't create enemies forever; you build bridges, you learn to appreciate your hosts and speak good of your hosts. Only your region cannot give you the presidency, reach out to people that matters. Lobby with the ruling party if you don't have the power to endure and build a formidable political party like Asiwaju. Strike at the right time with your connections. Peter Obi made a grave mistake when he came to Lagos by not visiting the Oba of Lagos(I won't say much on this but people of wisdom will understand better).
Stop this mentality that your tribe is better than every other tribes. Your gentility doesn't mean you are coward. Yoruba used to say that if you prostrate for a dwarf doesn't mean your height will be reduced when you stand up.
I am appealing to my Igbo brothers to caution all these people pushing them against the opponents. You don't bully people, you don't defame people to power it's not possible. David Hundeyin is from Badagry. FG has approved the Badagry port; which will bring massive development. Aisha's region too is witnessing massive development . But these people keep pushing you guys and you all are cheering them up. Reflect on this Shalom. Please leave Ndigbo out of your worries. Did we ask for your advice? Just leave us please. As for your fellow commenters or monikers, tell them to go and hug transformer, or jump into the lagoon. Your thuggery and violence in the name of politics is disgusting. Leave us alone please. Nigeria will never reach it's potential with your stupid brand of politics. Good day. |
