But my question is, why do production companies pay star artistes millions of dollars if they are still going to end up paying almost or sometimes more than the production cost to market a movie?

"The Fall Guy" being an Intellectual Property (IP) film based on the original series that aired for five seasons in the 1980s makes its underperformance at the box office even more amusing to me. The fact that prominent executives invested approximately $140 million in an original concept initially struck me as peculiar when I read that rumor. This may be due to the observation that only a few original projects receive even half of that budget for production. Lol.

While I understand your point, the number of failed franchise films can't be compared to new original films. The facts and figures is disproportionately skewed to favour IP films. You can't even count 10 original films that have been critically acclaimed and done fantastically at the box office for last 5 years. I can easily count over 20 off the top of my head for IP films.

Also the excuse of poorly written films doesn't stick here. There's been a deluge of top quality original films released in the past few years and yet no widespread love. How many original films can you count that has surpassed at least $300mn worldwide in the last 5 years??
Yet, Mediocre IP films will still clear that milestone real quick unless it's god-aweful utterly bad.

If a much maligned Aquaman 2 movie can make over $400mn at US box office with all the doom and gloom flop predictions and the end of the DCEU, then audiences don't really know what they want. Cos this support is outrightly lacking for newer films.

Even at that all this wouldn't really be a problem for me. It's the annoying talk of "no original content" in town that annoys me. i gagged at the bolded last bit 😂. The reason why major studios backed out from picking it up for a bullish cinematic run is so crystal clear now. I hate it when critics don't say the truth, thinking they are helping. This is Dev Patel's directorial debut if i am not mistaken, and it is very okay for him not to get it 100% right, but the near perfect hyping he got from the first screening, made me think, he cooked a sumptuous meal for the ages, but seeing the trailer, i just got a hint it was gonna be generic and i needed not to waste my time on it.

I've observed that many Indians tend to show unwavering support for their movies, irrespective of the quality, similar to the behavior often exhibited by some comic book fans. I have encountered Indian movies in the past that failed to resonate with me or meet my expectations, despite garnering positive reviews online. Consequently, I approach anything originating from Bollywood, which happens to be my least favorite movie industry, with a significant degree of skepticism. However, I held a glimmer of hope for this because of Jordan Peele's endorsement.

The Starling Girl (2023) - 80%

Aside from the acting, the movie is visually stunning, captivating the audience and providing an escape from the real world. Overall, this film serves as a solid directorial debut for Laurel Parmet. Both she and Celine Song have made a remarkable entrance into their directing careers.

Monkey Man (2024) - 55%

This film can be categorized as a generic action movie in which the antagonists consistently make unwise decisions, while a lone protagonist effortlessly defeats them all. Its storyline revolves around revenge, which is a familiar trope. However, what hindered my overall enjoyment of this movie, resulting in a rating below 60%, were the evident indicators of an inexperienced director's signature within the action genre. The excessive camera movements and shaky cinematography during fight scenes were employed in an attempt to intensify the viewer's immersion in the action.

Unfortunately, the repetitive and exaggerated utilization of these techniques eventually became disorienting and fatiguing. Furthermore, the excessive implementation of flashback storytelling further detracted from my appreciation of the film. I want to emphasize that I hold no animosity towards Dev Patel, as I believe he has the potential to deliver stronger performances in his future endeavors. I will continue to follow his career and see what he takes on next.
