If you are serious about it stop waiting for a record label. A record wont just pick you like that. I will advice you to start making covers of popular songs and if people like your voice it can create more publicity for you and a record may stumble on one of your cover. Youtube is a good place for you to start, if you can try and also make simple videos of you singing. 2 Likes |

Science/Technology / 3D Scan Of Stonehenge Reveals Hiddenax-head Carvings by sS2(m): 10:46pm On Mar 18, 2013 |
Stonehenge has long been one of the world's most mysterious monuments. The massive rock circle has given up a few of its secrets to a digital scanning project led by historical-preservation organization English Heritage with an assist from the York Archaeological Trust . The 3D laser-scanning data collected last year has unveiled 72 hidden ax-head carvings in the surface of the stone. Stonehenge was given a complete 3D-scanning treatment, generating 850gigabytes of data. Archeologists put software from Bentley Systems to work to analyze the data. The resulting datacrunching showed 72 carvings depicting Bronze Age tools that had been hiding from the naked eye for thousands of years. Almost all show ax heads, but one is likely a dagger. The ax-shaped carvings show a certain obsession with the tool shape. All of the ax blades face upward. Some Stonehenge carvings had already been located through visual inspections, but these new carvings reveal a treasure trove of ancient art. A report from English Heritage suggests the carvings may be interpreted as offerings to the dead. Information gathered from the scanning project will be used in displays at a new Stonehenge visitors center set to open this year. The project has also helped archeologists document graffiti and erosion patterns on the monument. It did not, however, unveil any evidence of Merlin's presence. Sorry, King Arthur fans.

Music/Radio / Music And Personality by sS2(m): 11:07am On Mar 12, 2013 |
Does your taste in music reveal information about your personality? Research conducted by psychologists Jason Rentfrow and Sam Gosling suggests that knowing the type of music you listen to can actually lead to surprisingly accurate predictions about your personality. For example, researchers found that people could make accurate judgments about an individual's levels of extraversion, creativity and open-mindedness after listening to ten of their favorite songs. Extraverts tend to seek out songs with heavy bass lines, while those who enjoy more complex styles such as jazz and classical music tend to be more creative and have higher IQ-scores. Another study conducted by researchers at Heriot-Watt University looked at more than 36,000 participants from all over the world. Participants were asked to rate more than 104 different musical styles in addition to offering information about aspects of their personality. The following are just some of the personality traits linked to certain musical styles. Pop Do you prefer to listen to the top 40 hits? Do the latest tracks from Rhianna, Selena Gomez and Flo Rida make up your workout mix? If so, chances are that you also tend to be extraverted, honest and conventional. While pop music lovers are hard-working and have high self-esteem, researchers suggests that they tend to be less creative and more uneasy. Rap and Hip/Hop Are Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre more your style? In spite of the stereotype that rap lovers are more aggressive or violent, researchers have actually found no such link. Rap fans do tend to have high self- esteem and are usually outgoing. Country Would you rather watch CMT instead of MTV? Country music fans are typically hardworking, conventional and outgoing. While country songs are often centered on heartbreak, people who gravitate towards this genre tend to be very emotionally stable. Rock / Heavy Metal Despite the sometimes aggressive image that rock music and heavy metal project, researchers found that fans of this style of music are usually quite gentle. They tend to be creative, but are often introverted and may suffer from low self-esteem. Indie Do you love seeking out obscure bands and indie artists? Fans of the indie genre are typically introverted, intellectual and creative. According to researchers, they also tend to be less hard- working and less gentle. Passivity, anxiousness and low self-esteem are other common personality characteristics. Dance Do you love the fast-paced rhythms of dance music? According to researchers, people who prefer dance music are usually outgoing and assertive. Classical Classical music lovers are typically more introverted, but are also at ease with themselves and the world around them. They are creative and have a good sense of self-esteem. Jazz, Blues and Soul People who enjoy jazz, blues or soul music were found to be more extraverted with high self-esteem. They also tend to be very creative, intelligent and at ease. According to researcher Adrian North of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK, the reason people sometimes feel defensive about their taste in music might be related to how much it relates to attitudes and personality. "People do actually define themselves through music and relate to other people through it but we haven’t known in detail how music is connected to identity," he explained. The next time you are putting together a playlist to listen to during your commute or workout, consider how your personality might be reflected in your song choices. http://psychology.about.com/od/personalitydevelopment/a/music-and-personality.htm

Politics / How $1M Poverty Funds From Bayelsa Was Diverted For Beyonce-sahara Reporters by sS2(m): 10:24am On Feb 23, 2013 |
Revealed: How Then Governor Goodluck Jonathan Gave Obaigbena $1 Million From Bayelsa’s Poverty Alleviation Funds For Beyonce And Jay Z's Visit To Nigeria caption: Beyonce and Jayzee in Nigeria in October 2006 By SaharaReporters, New York SaharaReporters has uncovered a document indicating that a million dollars of Bayelsa State’s poverty alleviation fund was spent by then Governor Goodluck Jonathan on bringing American entertainers Beyonce and Jay Z to Nigeria in 2006. In a letter stamped and signed by Bayelsa officials, N150 million (approximately a million dollars in 2006) was released from the state’s poverty alleviation fund for the first ThisDay Music Festival in Lagos. The document came to light after a controversy was ignited over how much money American “reality TV” star Kim Kardashian was paid for a brief visit to Nigeria. Ms. Kardashian, star of a US TV show about her idle rich family and who shot to international fame after a sex tape featuring her and her rapper boyfriend went viral, was reportedly paid half a million dollars for the 24-hour-visit last week. The sources who provided the 2006 document for Beyonce and Jay Z’s visit told Saharareporters that there was a shady financial link between the producers of some high profile entertainment events and the governors and other officials who control budgets at the state and federal levels. Mr. Obaigbena’s newspaper, ThisDay, is a major sponsor of entertainment events that brings US music stars as well as top public figures for flying visits to Nigeria in exchange for gargantuan paychecks. “Mr. Obaigbena often lines up financial bonanzas from numerous governors, ministers and other top government officials to finance his jamborees,” said one of the sources who is based in the UK and is knowledgeable about such deals. SaharaReporters obtained a letter from Mr. Obaigbena to the Bayelsa State government soliciting funds from the oil-producing state ahead of Nigeria’s 46th independence celebrations in 2006. The publisher wrote, “We invite you to partner with us as co- hosts of the festival.” The letter added: “With a total budget of $10 million, the co-host is expected to contribute a minimum of $2.5 million (two million five hundred thousand USD).” At the bottom of the letter, minuted by hand and signed by then Governor Jonathan’s aides as well as the Bayelsa State accountant general are the words, “Release N150,000,000.00 (One hundred and fifty million naira) only to be drawn from the poverty alleviation subhead.” One source told SaharaReporters that Mr. Obaigbena sent similar letters to other south- south states. SaharaReporters could not ascertain how much of the released funds was paid directly to performers at the festival. There is no indication that Beyonce, one of the few entertainment stars internationally famous enough to only need one name, was aware that her performance was being subsidized by the poor people of Bayelsa. But during Beyonce’s celebrated rendition of the Nigerian national anthem, pictures of Bayelsa State were projected onto the wall of the Lagos concert venue. According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, 47% of Bayelsans live in poverty. The World Bank says that per capita gross domestic product in the Niger Delta is significantly below the country’s average. According to the state’s own 2005 development strategy, 80% of rural communities have no access to safe drinking water, a key indicator in judging poverty. In Yenagoa, the state capital and Bayelsa’s largest urban area, an estimated two out of every five residents do not have access to safe drinking water. In 2005, as part of its UN-approved strategy to combat poverty, the state promised to make a fund of N100 million available as soft loans and micro- credit to Bayelsans. The allocated fund was N50 million less than Mr. Jonathan approved for Mr. Obaigbena’s music festival. That promise was made in the Bayelsa State Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy, published by the United Nations Development Program and signed by then Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. A civil rights activist in Yenogoa told SaharaReporters that the state “has been a woeful failure in its poverty reduction program.” The letter from Mr. Obaigbena to then- governor Goodluck Jonathan said the concert was necessary to show that the news from Nigeria was “not just… HIV/AIDS, conflicts, poverty, kidnapping, strife and riots.” The publisher added: “This is the longest ever period of democracy in Nigeria, over seven years and counting! And a stable democracy means more investment and economic prosperity for all.” The publisher went on to give reasons why the state government should contribute to the concert. The stars’ performances would “tell the world, through music, that Nigeria’s time has come,” Mr. Obaigbena wrote. The letter added, “And once the good news catches on with the young and upwardly mobile, music loving new generation it will catch on with the world of investments and bountiful opportunities.” In 2006, Mr. Goodluck Jonathan had just become governor of Bayelsa after his boss, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was impeached and convicted on corruption charges. Mr. Jonathan was then elevated to Vice President to then President Umaru Yar’Adua. Mr. Yar’Adua's death in 2010 enabled Mr. Jonathan, a zoologist whose PhD focused on tropical fish, to assume the presidency. Since 2006, Mr. Obaigbena’s parent company, Leaders & Company, has produced a number of high-profile events that have seen such American stars as Rihanna, R Kelly, and Usher perform for Nigerians. The ticket prices for these concerts are usually out of reach of the “average” Nigerian. The events feature tickets that cost many tens of thousands of naira, usually reserved for “VIP access.” ThisDay has also hosted political luminaries like former US President Bill Clinton and former economic adviser to the Obama presidency, Lawrence Summers. At an Africa Rising concert in London, former US Secretary of State Colin Powell came on stage and danced to the popular Naija jam “Yahooze” by Olu Maintain. http://mobile.saharareporters.com/news-page/revealed-how-then-governor-goodluck-jonathan-gave-obaigbena-1-million-bayelsa’s-poverty-al

Science/Technology / Biblical Trees Survive After 900years by sS2(m): 7:17pm On Feb 22, 2013 |
Olive trees in the Jerusalem garden where Jesus Christ prayed before he was crucified have "miraculously" lived through the past nine centuries bacteria-free, according to a molecular research presented last year at the Vatican Radio in Rome. Carried by a team of researchers from Italy's National Research Council (CNR) and various Italian universities, the three-year study investigated eight gnarled olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane, one of the holiest sites of Christendom. The research found that three of the eight healthy trees (the only ones on which it was technically possible to carry out the dating) come from the middle of the 12th century, although the roots underground are certainly much older. ANALYSIS: Can We Find Trees on Other Planets? "These olives are among the oldest broad-leaved trees in the world," lead researcher Antonio Cimato of the CNR's Tree and Timber Institute in Florence, said. Carbon dating showed that the trees come from the years 1092, 1166 and 1198, a period when the Crusaders, engaged in the reconstruction of the great churches of the Holy Land, re-built the Basilica of Gethsemane in Jerusalem. According to the researchers, it is likely that during the construction of the church, the olive garden was rearranged and renovated. Indeed, olive trees can grow back after being cut down or even burnt. NEWS: Was Jesus Happy? DNA analysis of the eight trees revealed they were all related to a single, older tree. "All eight trees have similar genetic profiles, meaning they are olive 'twins,' all children of a single specimen," Cimato said. According to the researcher, this means the olives were not spontaneous trees, but were deliberately planted. Why did the Crusaders choose one single tree, among the thousands growing in Jerusalem? Were they trying to preserve a specific, meaningful lineage? Are the olives linked to the very trees under which, according to the gospel of Luke, Jesus sweat drops of blood as he prayed? Excellent Idea of the Day: 3-D Plant Roots The questions will remain unanswered, according to Cimato. "Finding the original tree is impossible," he said. Despite their age, the 900-year-old olive trees were found in excellent health, unaffected by lead pollution and bacteria. Amazingly, the garden's earth appears to block insects and bacterial proliferation. "I would call it a small miracle," Cimato said.

Religion / Cardinal Keith O'brien: 'allow Priests To Marry' by sS2(m): 6:12pm On Feb 22, 2013 |
Britain's most senior Roman Catholic has said he believes priests should be able to marry if they wish to do so. Cardinal Keith O'Brien said it was clear many priests struggled to cope with celibacy, and should be able to marry and have children. The cardinal will be part of the conclave that will choose the next Pope. He spoke of his surprise at the resignation of Benedict XVI, and said he was open to the new Pope coming from outside of Europe. In an interview with BBC Scotland's Glenn Campbell, the cardinal said some issues - for example abortion and euthanasia - were "basic dogmatic beliefs" of "divine origin" which the Church could never accept. But he said it would be within the scope of the new Pope to consider whether the Roman Catholic Church should change its stance on other issues, which were not of divine origin. He explained: "For example the celibacy of the clergy, whether priests should marry - Jesus didn't say that. "There was a time when priests got married, and of course we know at the present time in some branches of the church - in some branches of the Catholic church - priests can get married, so that is obviously not of divine of origin and it could get discussed again." Cardinal O'Brien said he had never personally thought about whether he wanted to get married as he had been "too busy" with his duties. But he added: "In my time there was no choice and you didn't really consider it too much, it was part of being a priest. When I was a young boy, the priest didn't get married and that was it. "I would be very happy if others had the opportunity of considering whether or not they could or should get married. "It is a free world and I realise that many priests have found it very difficult to cope with celibacy as they lived out their priesthood and felt the need of a companion, of a woman, to whom they could get married and raise a family of their own." 'Excellent men' Cardinal O'Brien is the only man in Britain with a say in who succeeds Benedict XVI when he stands down next week. He said he believed it might be time for a younger pontiff from part of the developing world, where the Catholic faith is thriving. "Well I would be open to a Pope from anywhere if I thought it was the right man, whether it was Europe or Asia or Africa or wherever", he added. "It is something which the cardinals have to think about seriously, having had Popes from Europe for such a long time now - hundreds of years - whether it isn't time to think of the developing world as being a source of excellent men. "And of course we do have excellent cardinals from other parts of the world as well - highly intelligent, well-trained, deeply spiritual men from other parts of the world." Benedict XVI was aged 78 when he was elected in 2005, making him one of the oldest new Popes in history. And Cardinal O'Brien said a younger successor who was able to serve for a longer period of time may be able to "get more things done, to steady us up a wee bit and to give us something of the courage of the earlier apostles again". But he said he had not yet decided who should be elected as Pope during the conclave, which is expected to be held next month. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-21552628 |
