The federal government announced a plan to shut the runway at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos State, for eight weeks

According to a tweet by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Monday, March 13, 2023, the move is to carry out maintenance work.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to safety, security, and comfort – its core values.

“This is to notify the public that runway 18R/36L of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, has been closed for eight weeks for maintenance work to carried out.

“Taxi way B-18L will be used for all flight operations,” it said.

Earlier, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency had closed down the international runway for repairs.

Now, eight months later, the Runway 18 left at the domestic wing of the airport has been closed as well.

This closure was necessary for contractors to install the airfield ground lighting system which had been neglected for over 15 years.

The closure has caused difficulties for domestic airlines, as they have had to share the 18/Right runway with international airlines

The website of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has crashed amid the commencement of a recruitment exercise.

The agency’s website indicated ‘500 internal server errors when checked on Monday morning, March 13, 2023.

The agency’s recruitment application began on Sunday and was expected to last for two weeks.

However, for hours now, applicants cannot access the website.

According to Daily Post, when contacted the Director of Media and Advocacy of the agency, Femi Babafemi; he confirmed the development but explained that it was due to glitches resulting from traffic on the website.

“The portal never crashed. There are glitches due to the huge number of applicants trying to access the platform simultaneously, but our technical team is resolving that before noon”, he stated.

As stated earlier, the ongoing exercise will run from March 12 to April 8 and graduates of secondary school, polytechnic, and university are invited to apply.

Applicants must be of Nigerian origin by birth and possess a national identity number (NIN) while computer literacy will be an added advantage for all cadres, the statement said.

Applicants are also required to tender all certificates at the time of recruitment as any other qualification presented subsequently will not be valid for career progression in the agency.

Applicants must be medically fit and must produce a certificate of medical fitness from a government hospital.


Candidates applying for the role of “superintendent cadre” must not be less than 20 years or more than 35 years while the age limit for “narcotic agent cadre” and “narcotic assistant cadre” is 30 years and not less than 18 years at the point of entry.

A Nigerian man has joined a small group of people who raised the bar to a new level while proposing marriage to their lovers.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has postponed the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) mock earlier scheduled for Thursday, March 16, 2023, to Thursday, March 30, 2023.


JAMB spokesman Fabian Benjamin made this known in a statement on Monday, March 13, 2023.

According to the board, the shift in date is partly owing to the change in the date for the Gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly Elections earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, 11th March 2023 but now moved to 18th March 2023.

The board said canididates that registered early and indicated their willingness to take the Mock-UTME, would be notified as to when to print their Mock-UTME notification slip, which would contain their centres and other details.

The Mock-UTME is an optional examination introduced by the Board to provide an opportunity for candidates to have hands-on experience with the system as well as afford the Board an opportunity to ascertain its readiness and that of its partners for the main UTME, which is scheduled to hold between 29th April, to 12th May,2023.


According to the statement “The Board also wants to use this opportunity to announce that this year’s UTME would witness some groundbreaking innovations aimed at addressing observed infractions and centre failures.

“For instance, in the new regime, if there is a delay of up to one hour before the commencement of a particular session, that session stands cancelled and would be rescheduled along with the candidates.

“By the same token, no examination can be started one hour after the scheduled commencement time. The session will be scheduled for any VACANT or AVAILABLE slot. The Board has made it mandatory that candidates must be notified of their new scheduled session or centre, as the case may be, before they leave their centre. In addition, no candidate would be allowed to spend less than one hour before submission of responses during the UTME. Similarly, the new regime would make it impossible for candidates to login after one hour of activation of examination.

“If for any reason, an examination session is cancelled or cannot hold, candidates are not to panic as they will simply be scheduled for the next available session, which could be that same day. What such candidates are expected to do is to quietly leave the hall and move to the Holding Area to await further instruction.

“Furthermore, they are not to leave the examination centre until they have been notified of the day and time of their rescheduled examination.

“Candidates are to note that any rescheduled examination is strictly meant to accommodate only those whose examination session could not hold on account of one reason or another, not for those who were marked LATE or ABSENT for their session.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has asked commercial banks to dispense old Naira notes and to also receive the same as deposits from customers.

The Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele gave the directive at a Bankers’ Committee meeting held on Sunday, March 12, 2023.

According to the directives, tellers at commercial banks are to generate the codes for deposits and there is no limit to the number of times an individual or company can make deposits.


Confirming the development on Monday morning, March 13, 2023, Anambra state governor, Charles Soludo said; “Emefiele personally confirmed the above to me during a phone conversation on Sunday night”.

The governor asked residents of Anambra State to freely accept and transact their businesses with the old currency notes (N200; N500; and N1,000) as well as the new notes.


“Residents should report any bank that refuses to accept deposits of the old notes. Anambra State Government will not only report such a bank to the CBN, but will also immediately shut down the defaulting branch,” Governor Soludo added in his statement.

This is coming a week after the Supreme Court ruled that the use of old 200, 1,000, and 500 naira notes are to remain valid till December 31, 2023.

But the silence of the Federal Government and CBN on the ruling had made traders reject the old currencies despite the fact that some banks are reportedly dispensing the old notes to customers.

No fewer than nine residents have been kidnapped by gunmen at the Grow Homes Estate along Kuchibiyi in the Kubuwa area of the Federal Capital Territory.

The gunmen numbering about 20 were said to have stormed the estate around 11:30 pm on Friday, March 10, 2023.

A resident of the community who identified himself simply as Hassan said that the victims were captured from two separate apartments in the estate.

He added that the incident had caused panic in the community.

He said,” Yesterday, at about 11:30 pm some gunmen in their large numbers came to carry out an operation at Grow homes estate along Kuchibiyi. We heard the sounds of gunshots, there was panic in the entire community as a result of the incident.


“This morning, we went to the estate and we learnt those gunmen were about 20. They moved from one apartment to the other dispossessing their belongings. They also kidnapped at least nine persons including children and women from two apartments in the estate.

“They escaped through the bush which linked the community to Paze village. The police and the estate security have been searching the bush since morning to see if they can rescue the kidnapped residents.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the police in Abuja, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident.

She added the police and the estate security are combing the bushes in the area to ensure the victims are rescued.

Adeh said, “Upon receipt of the distress call, we immediately deployed our men to the scene. The suspects however abruptly suspended their operations and took some victims with them into the bush.


“Operatives of the Police and the estate security are still combing the bushes in the area to ensure they are rescued unhurt.”


She urged residents of the area not to panic, calling on them to help the police with credible information that could lead to the arrest of the assailants.

“We urge the residents to remain calm and assist with useful information that could lead to the swift arrest of these criminals,” Adeh added.

In a related development, the Zamfara State Police Command has rescued 14 kidnapped victims who have been in bandits’ camp for 68 days.

The spokesperson for the command, SP Mohammed Shehu, said the victims were rescued by the police tactical operatives in conjunction with the vigilante group during a mop-up at Munhaye forest in the Tsafe Local Government Area of the state.


Shehu said, “On March 10, 2023, the Police Tactical Operatives in conjunction with the vigilante, while on a mop-up operation near Munhaye forest, successfully dislodged some bandits’ camp belonging to recalcitrant bandits’ Kingpin called “Dogo Sule”.

“As a result of the operation, 14 hostages, comprising of two male adults, seven female and five children below the age of two years were rescued.”

Shehu maintained that in the course of debriefing, the victims informed the police detectives that, on January 1, 2023, at about 11 o’clock in the night, a large number of suspected bandits armed with sophisticated weapons stormed Anguwar Mangoro and Gidan Maidawa villages in the Gusau Local Government Area and abducted them to their camp where they spent 68 days in captivity.

He said, “The victims who were in sympathetic condition have been taken to the Police clinic in Gusau for medical treatment and thereafter reunited with their families and relations.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Kolo Yusuf, congratulated the victims for regaining their freedom.

The commissioner reassured that the police would remain committed to protecting the lives and properties of the citizens.

Popular radio host Baba Bintin of the Ibadan-based private station Fresh FM Nigeria has reportedly passed away after collapsing on the way to the station for his Saturday morning show.

On Saturday, March 11, 2023, the legendary radio twins Komolafe Olaiya and Olalomi Amole, Oyin Ado, announced Baba Bintin's passing during a radio broadcast.

A 57-year-old man, Oladeji Babalola, has been assassinated in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Babalola, popularly known as Chicago was assassinated at Agbariko area, Jemibewon road in Ibadan North West Local Government area of the state.

He was said to be selling sportswear at Adamasingba Sports Complex.

An investigation by our correspondent revealed that Babalola was at the shop when someone called him on phone for business which he left for.

“He was already in the shop. He changed his shoe to sleepers when the call came in for a business. So, he left immediately, but unfortunately for him, two guys were trailing him on the bike (motorcycle). They rode close to him and shot him dead. They shot him on the head and another part of the body,” One of the eyewitnesses told our correspondent.

When contacted on phone, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident, adding that the police had commenced an investigation into the matter.

“The incident is confirmed. An investigation has commenced demystifying circumstances surrounding the incident. Updates would be communicated, please,” he added.

Many passengers have been left stranded as Nigerian aviation workers protested over the poor condition of service and the failure of the management of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc to increase their salaries.


The protest which started on Monday morning, January 23, 2023, caused disruptions with international flights heavily affected.

It was learnt that both passenger and cargo handling activities were disrupted at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos when the NAHCO protested.

There were crowds at the passenger check-in counters as flight operations were suspended for the airlines that are serviced by the company.

“Passengers are stranded at the Lagos airport as aviation union protests over salary increment.

“NAHCO staff members are the ones protesting and international flights are heavily affected; they are all stuck at the airport,” a source said.

Recently, air passengers have been affected by various contending issues at airports in the country.


For instance, in September 2022, SaharaReporters reported that President Muhammadu Buhari’s Government was plotting to bar aviation workers in the country from embarking on strike.

A provision in a copy of the newly amended Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Act which was obtained by SaharaReporters clearly states that aviation workers cannot declare a strike action regardless of the situation.

As a result of this, the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), and Nigerian Association of Aviation Professionals (ANAP) jointly showed their displeasure at the draconian provisions in the National Assembly’s Act.

The Act designates aviation workers as essential personnel who are not permitted to go on strike.

Following the crisis, flight operations were disrupted as Air Traffic Controllers suspended operations which affected the landing and taking-off of flights.

The development left passengers stranded, as they also struggled to get the necessary information, and flight directives amongst others in some airports.

The affected airports included Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.

Meanwhile, at Abuja, the workers took to the streets to protest against the obnoxious Essential Services clauses from the Bills/Acts of the aviation agencies.


The workers held banners and placards, some of which read, “Buhari, don’t assent to anti-union aviation bills/acts,” and “Our voice must be heard”.

Following the demise of Ifeanyi, the son of Afrobeats superstar Davido, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osun State has suspended political activities for the week.

A video of a man falling into a river in Lagos went viral on Saturday, but his identity remains unknown.

A Facebook user, named Ngozi Blessing, has now shared a video on the internet, revealing on her page that the incident occurred at her Idumota bridge on Lagos island.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has again imposed a visa ban on Nigerians wishing to visit Dubai.

The ban was reportedly communicated in a notice to Nigeria's trading partners, including travel agencies.

“All Dubai applications submitted will now be rejected,” the notice reads, adding that rejections will be sent in batches.


Denials are "common for Nigerians and permits are currently suspended," the release said.
