Education › Re: My Bitter Experience, Undergraduates "Keep Record Of All Your Results" by STENON(f): 5:58pm On Feb 11, 2015 |
Ezegozie: I will like to use this opportunity to share with you (especially the undergraduates), what I passed through last three weeks when I came for my clearance, and I hope you all will learn from it and form the habit of keeping record of your results. Problem started when I came to my school for my B.sc clearance like others, and I found out that my department recorded 3.48 as my FCGPA.
Immediately, I became dead in shock, because I had calculated my GP myself even before coming for my clearance and I got 3.55.
Immediately, I suspended my clearance and typed my whole result starting from first year to final year with my Laptop, calculated it, printed it into two copies and submitted one to HOD (with letter of GP re-calculation) and another one to another Prof. Who happens to come from my village.
It was really a great battle. I was insulted, and was even told to leave office repeatedly. But through the grace of God and the help of that Prof from my village, my result was reviewed, and it was discovered that the person that computed my GP made a grave mistake and recorded 129points for me in my final year instead of 139points which brought me to 2nd class lower.
Glory be to God that the error was detected and corrected and my deserved GP (3.55) was given to me. Had it been that I didn't keep record of all my results, there wouldn't have been any strong evidence to back-up my case. And the department is not ready to show you any result, I still wonder why .
So undergraduates, I advise you to keep record of your results incase of any error in GP computation, and also make friends with lecturers, so that if you have any problem, somebody will be there to speak for you. something similar to this has happened to me in my 200 level, though I eventually missed the mtn scholarship because of this cgpa issue with my dept secretary. After applying for the mtn scholarship, a form was sent to my department to confirm my studentship status and cgpa. the secretary entered the CGPA of the next person after my matric number(3.10) for me instead of mine (4.71). it was late before I discovered. It was a bitter experience. |

MsNas: Please do contact Professors or program directors to know how they go about their application. This is an excerpt I got from the UND Geology program's webpage. 1. For admission to the geology Ph.D. program, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in geology from an accredited college or university or otherwise demonstrate sufficient coursework, training, or experience in geoscience. 2. For “approved” status, students must have completed a 5-6 credit hour geology field course, along with satisfactory achievement in supporting science and mathematics, as determined by the department graduate admissions committee.
The other schools you posted were not really clear on their specifications. Also, I think what they offer is PhD Geology and not PhD Geophyics. Those are two different courses. okay, Thank you , Pls can I apply for Medical Physics considering my undergraduate discipline? Although, I'm yet to search for Grad schools for that course, Pls is there any school that you can recommend for me and with good source of funding for international students. thank you |

OjaP: Stenon:
Ms Nas is right. You need to contact the schools graduate coordinators ASAP. You chose top geology schools that accept hundreds of applications a year. Priority would be given to applicants who have their first or graduate degree in the geological, physical, and natural sciences. Applicants who have taken (and passed) at least two years of Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and/or some geology classes would be given preference. Applicants with research experience and/or one or two publications would be considered first.
However, if you have taken all or most of the classes listed above; then you are good to go. If not, you may be required to take those classes first including some undergraduate (Introduction to geology, Mineralogy, Sedimentary petrology, Igneous Petrology, Metamorphic Petrology, Hydrogeology, Paleontology, Petroleum geology, and Structural Geology) and/or graduate geology classes, including the summer field class before advancing. This conditional admission of course can only be justified "only if" you have a good CGPA, bad a*s GRE scores, strong LORs, and a very strong statement of purpose among others. Please be informed that it may take you between 2-3 years (depending on how fast you are) to take these pre-requisites, and another 4-5 years to complete the PhD program. I will advise you to apply to as many schools as you can. Choose up to 3-5 safety schools just in case. With your record, funding is not guaranteed but its a possibility.
How is A.C.E today? I used to be a regular at the gym, Oduduwa hall, Fine-Arts studio, and the market. Many of my friends finished from your school.
P.S - When writing potential supervisors or graduate coordinators, do not say you have a degree in Physics Education. Please say that you have a dual degree in Physics and Education or a degree in Physics with a minor in Education. Let your transcript do the rest of the talking. Thanks very much for your response sir. considering everything that I've read prior to my undergraduate discipline, from you and Msnas, I'm thinking abt changing my course to medical physics, Pls am I good to go with that ? and pls can GA /funding for Msc/PhD be 100% guaranteed for that course?...Thank you. |

My first A was in Part One, first semesta result, I had 88 A in my MTH 101, I was sad and about to cry, though it was the highest,bt I was sad because I dnt get 98 A or 99 A, it was later that my room mates explained to me that A is A, and that 70A is the same thing as 100A.
I'v never had F, bt my worst result was in Second semesta part One, I had C in my PHY102, I wept bitterly on that day, and since then, C and the rest(CDEF) are afraid of appearing at the front of my matric number.
Glory be to God...!!! |
You've got a very good GPA there! If I'm right, you're going for Phd in Geology/Geophysics? Did you contact the schools you mentioned in your previous post? I might not be 100% right, but maybe you should talk to professors in your intended department first to know if they accept students with education degrees for their masters/PhD programs, then you can go from there. I said that because education is a whole different faculty here and they do their things separate. At least from my limited knowledge.
If you don't mind me asking, is your course a 4 year course? What school is it?
Thank you and I really appreciate your response, The course is PhD in (Exploration) Geophysics, I'v read about the school / Dept requirements onLine, but I'm yet to confirm frm the Profs concerning the issue of Education Degree, I'l contact them ASAP, My Course is a 4 year course at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Affliated to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. |
