aadeyi: Interviews are one of the simplest thing I ever knew exists cos it's just a mere expression of yourself in whatever form it requires. But one thing you should never try to do is LIE! Just be prepared academically and be yourself. Be audible, smart and always ask them to come again when u think u r confused or u need a little time to think. Keeping quiet or the use of erm erm would not help you, instead give them the work to do by asking them to repeat their question and use ur naija sense to quickly think about ur response.
Most importantly SMILE!!!!! With the little time I have spent in the US, I got to know this is where u find the "fakest" smile. People want you to smile even if you are holding a gun to kill them. Each time you are not talking, put on your smile. I believe it's a walk - over for you anyway. Just put your guards together. okay, thanks. Although, I smile a lot and I believe that is also an added advantage for me. |

OjaP: You are fine. Many of us who are in the U.S still have accent.
The key to them hearing and understanding you is to speak clearly, slowly, and picking your words one by one. This shouldn't be a biggie.
Good luck. owkay sir, I got your points. I.e. speaking clearly, slowly, and picking my words one by one. Thank you sir |

joenicewake: That's okay!
Obviously, I think some folks are getting me wrong here yet it doesn't really matter.
Telling her to reduce her accent is not about encouraging her to speak like an American but pay attention to her pronounciation.
Also is the fact that academic phrases are very unique and cohesive--linking words and phrases. It makes someone sound academic.
Just like in IELTS speaking test, i was asked questions about arts. Arts is one of the most difficult and tricky questions in IELTS.
What saved me that day was pronounciation and use of academic phrases like first of all, obviously, not withstanding though, also is the fact that, so as to, in addition to that, etc, even though i turned down the use of cue card. Sis, it's all good anyway. Good luck!! Alright, Thanks, well read and noted. I'm glad for your response |

genxris: Avoid using those made on Nigeria English like ( yes Na, sha, as in, etc). Don't worry about the accent, speak in a audible and clear tone and put a little smile when necessary. Be prepared to likely tell them about your intrest in the course and maybe a summary of whatever you have written to to them in your statement of purpose. Goodluck to you Thanks so much. Please I got to realise from this forum that speaking with clear and audible voice is different from Trying to speak like an American. right? |

Mystiqme: ^^^ this. And Stenon, I disagree with the person that said most schools require evaluation of transcripts. Most schools actually don't. Based on my research when I was applying, I would say 20% of schools in the USA ask for Wes evaluation. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing to do, but it's not compulsory. Best. Amen. thanks for taking your time to respond to my question. I'm grateful. |

zeezahbee: is the award academic related? like best graduating student, best student in a particular course. if it is , then you can talk about it. if it is your final year dinner award like take hot to mama, tallest babe, most crazy, most sophisticated and all sort, dont talk about it, its gonna make u look silly.
Remember only answer questions that you are ask. Don't talk to much *smiles* Thanks my sis. Yes,It is academics related. I'm referring to the award of the overall best Graduating student. |

godG: Well, you need not really worry about your accent. Your interviewers are conscious of the fact that you are a user of English as a foreign language. They are not expecting you to Americanize yourself, magically. The most important thing is for you to adequately prepare for your interview, be audible and make sure you communicate your points brilliantly. Avoid unnecessary pauses, Nigerian fillers and be confident. If you can work on these, you are fine. You need no accent reduction class. I wish you well. Thanks my tutor. I'm very sorry for the break in our communication concerning my request from you. It has not been easy and Please I hope you will understand me better. |

ebdib: Not exactly. @stenon You need to read about the type of research conducted at the department
More importantly you need to prepare questions to ask them. They WILL definitely ask you to ask them questions. You don't want to look like a complete dork caught off guard when they do, so ask questions that show you actually did research on the department. I suggest asking about your proposed supervisor research or asking about how the faculty incorporates students into research... Etc. That makes you look academic. Glasses may even reflect light and are not recommended as a matter of fact.
Prepare to 1. Tell them about yourself. 2. Tell them why you chose their program 3. Them them why they should pick you and not someone else. 4. Your past work and how it has prepared you for grad school.
Then you prepare 4 questions to ask them.
Needless to say. Kill your naija accent to the barest minimum and make sure you test your Skype.!!!!!!! Slow Internet can **** your interview up. Thank you so much and I'm sorry for just replying back, it was due to some ineluctable circumstances. I don't have my research interest in that discipline, but one of my 300 level courses arouse my interest in that discipline. I wish to learn more about the practical application of what I've learnt in that course which is Optics. Thanks for replying my pm, I'll keep in touch with you. |
It's just a normal interview. Try as much as possible to give good examples in the course of your explanation and use academic phrases. You may also wear a simple glasses to improve your personality and most of all do reduce your accent.
Actually, I'm changing my Discipline at the PhD level, from Physics and Education to Medical Physics, so I know little about their academics Terms in that discipline.
Thanks, But please I dont feel convenient Whenever I wear Glasses.
My accent is the major Problem for now. Please what is the best way to improve on my accent? I'm a typical Yoruba Girl.
I really appreciate your response. Thanks. |
