Former Super Eagles captain Nwankwo Kanu has expressed his dismay over the performance of the national team in 2014. According to him,the national team was a failure in 2014.Disclosing this to goal.com,he said the national team did not live up to expectations in World Cup campaign and also frowned on their inability to qualify for January's Africa Cup of Nations. He however expressed optimism that the national team will do better in 2015.He went ahead to say that there are more works to do if the national team wants to regain its former glory. Speaking with goal.com,he said: “It is quite clear and we don’t need to shy away from the fact that Nigerian football did not fare well in the outgoing year." “This is as a result of the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations holding in Equatorial Guinea." “So if we are not featuring among the best countries in Africa that would participate in the 2015 Afcon, it simply means that something [went] wrong with our football this year." “We didn’t do well in the game this year, it’s just the honest truth. There is nothing good to write home about as regards the senior national team of Nigeria." “Mind you, Fifa rates our performance based on the Super Eagles not the age grade or women national teams’ performances." “It has been a disappointing year for Nigerian football. But by God’s grace, 2015 would be a new beginning for us." “I sincerely pray that everybody involved in the entire crisis and problems that bedevilled Nigerian football in the year 2014 will sit back and look at themselves and have a rethink, have a change of mind and start working in earnest for the growth and good of the game in the country." It should be recalled that the Super Eagles failed to qualify for 2015 AFCON after winning their third continental crown in South Africa in 2013. |

Nollywood actress Bimbo Thomas in this interview denies dating MC Oluomo and also reveals she is getting married with her heartrob soon. Excerpts: Is Bimbo Thomas now married? No Lady wants to stay single, regardless the thick and thin of marriage. Not that I don’t have a boyfriend and I know that we are really working hard to make it work. Very soon, we are heading to the alter by God’s grace. Can you tell us about him? No don’t worry, you will hear about him when the time is right. He is a private person. He doesn’t like to be brought to the open. When we get to the altar, you will all see him because he will not be hidden anymore. But I want to be married soon. How is your relationship with Mc Oluomo? Oluomo.Well MC Oluomo is a friend, a brother and a father.I call him my God father. I think he picked interest in me way back when I did Fathia Balogun’s movie, “Omo Iya Ijo”. Somehow, he said he wanted to see me and asked me to come to Oshodi. I wasn’t familiar with Oshodi so I didn’t want to go. He sent somebody to me with huge amount of money which of course I really appreciate. It took me a while before I could see him and the day I saw him, I had to go and kneel down to say thank you sir. We exchange contacts and we became friends. The man whether you like it or not has got a large heart. I don’t want to know whatever is attached to the large heart. Rumour has it that you guys are dating? I hear a lot about that but I don’t let it bother me because there is nothing like that between us. The story even had it that he sent one actress packing just for you to move into the apartment where you are living now in Oshodi axis? When I read such stories, I laugh. I don’t call any one in the media even my friends to say why did they write bad stories about me, because I know that whether it is true or false, they will definitely write it. So within me, I feel I owe nobody any explanation. Nobody will have a better understanding of this issue because if you are not with me when I was going to pay for the apartment, you cannot say that. The only relevant issue here is that the apartment I now occupy, late actress, Bisi Komolafe was living there before. Where I was staying was too open for me and there was no privacy actually. When people come around to look for me, they were always queried and I don’t like it so I needed to get a conducive environment. So I was in a hurry to get an apartment and my agent told me that there was one at Ajao Estate. Initially, I didn’t want to consider because I feel that Ajao Estate is still part of Oshodi and also busy. But when I got to the area, I liked it and I met with the Landlord’s son who was in charge and he also did know who I was. So, I paid immediately. Thereafter, a daughter of the Landlord who was Komolafe’s friend told me she was living in the apartment before I came. I never knew she stayed there because I don’t go to my colleagues’ house. Not that I’m not friendly, but it’s just my own style. I was in America when I got the story that MC Oluomo actually sent Bisi out of the house for me to pack in. I was like when did it happen. MC didn’t even know when I paid neither move into the apartment. I didn’t ask anybody because the story actually came from City People magazine. How about the car Rumour? Oluomo has never got me a car. Are you saying that your closeness with MC Oluomo has no intimacy? Not in any way. What if he actually asks you out? I knew him around 2005 when he was still dating Sikiratu Sindodo. He will never pick any interest not in anyway.

In the dusty village of Akwa Ikot Eyo Edem, Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, Edet Okon sat down in front of St. Mark Primary School. Sitting cross-legged on the concrete floor on one of the blocks of classrooms he now calls his home, the 40-year-old father of three leaned forward to exchange pleasantries with this correspondent.Okon’s immediate family members and 963 other households had fled their ancestral homes in Efut Obot Ikot in the ceded Bakassi Peninsula in March 2013. The fisherman lost his first daughter, Blessing, to the cold hands of death in September 2013, after battling with blood cancer for five months. But Okon’s agony did not end with Blessing’s death. Indeed, he now lives in the pool of the anguish of a man who has to practically sell his child into slavery. To raise funds for the series of medical tests, drugs, feeding and hospital bills incurred by Blessing, he opted to secure loans from someone to save her dying daughter. With no property to guarantee the loan, Okon gave up his second daughter, Mary,as collateral to secure the sum of N600, 000 given to him in installments. Our correspondent gathered that the creditor is a civil servant based in Calabar. “I was desperate to save Blessing from dying. Her situation had become critical at that time. That was the only thing I could do to salvage the situation. I am heartbroken,” Okon said, as his voice faded off, breaking down in tears. As tears rolled down his cheeks, he recalled the day he ‘sold’ her daughter into servitude. “I don’t know what came over me. It was sheer desperation I gave out my daughter so that the man would accept to give us the money,”Okon added, fighting back regrets of what many are likely to regard as condemnable. Our correspondent reached out to the intermediary, Daniel Ufot. He helped Okon to negotiate the N600, 000 loan from the creditor. On getting to the residence of the 59-year-old Ufot, who lives some five kilometres away from the camp, our correspondent found Mary in his residence. Ufot explained that some plain-cloth security operatives keeping watch on the camp had asked him to bring Mary from Calabar to meet with his father who he had not seen in 19 months. “I do not know Okon from Adam. But since I’m an expert in money lending, I offered to help him after having learnt of his predicament on how he had been battling to save the life of his daughter. But unfortunately, he could not provide any form of collateral to secure the loan. But the creditor, in his magnanimity, agreed to have her daughter as collateral since she was the only valuable ‘thing’ he could offer,” Ufot said. In a chat with this correspondent, Mary, who was a junior secondary school 2 pupil before they left Bakassi in March,2013, has since dropped out of school following their displacement from the oil rich peninsular. She shared horrible tales of inhuman treatment in the hands of her father’s creditor. Every morning, Mary hawks bottle water on the streets of Calabar, where, incidentally, Mary Slessor stopped the killing of twins. Observers may also spot the irony in the name of the legendary missionary and the enslaved Mary Okon. She added that on any day she failed to exhaust the sales of her wares, her new guardians descended heavily on her, beating her mercilessly in the process. “The man my father is owing has three female children and some other relatives are also putting up with us in the house. They normally give me a revenue target of N1, 000 daily. And sometimes when the market is bad and I don’t finish selling the water, they beat me up.They treat me very badly. I eat only once in a day and that is in the morning. I wash all their clothes, including the ladies’ pants, and do other house chores, too. And if I hesitate on washing their pants, they get infuriated and throw objects at me at will. I will not feel happy if I go back there,” she narrated. Yet, Ufot insisted that he only brought Mary to meet with his father as a respite since he had not set his eyes on her for about 19 months. “There are no signs that they would be repaying the loan. I only obeyed the instruction of the security men. She will be on her way back to the creditor’s place in Calabar,” Ufot said. When contacted, the Refugee CampLeader, Etim Ene,confirmed to our correspondent on the telephone on Monday that Mary has indeed returned to the creditor in Calabar. Ene said, “Mary has been taken to the creditor’s house in Calabar South. He was taken away by the guarantor, on December 2.” Efforts by our correspondent to trace the address of the creditor, whose name is given as Asuquo Etim, said to be residing on Atimbo Road, Calabar South Local Government Area, was abortive. The creditor is said to be an employee of the Cross River State Urban Development Agency. Ufot had earlier refused to allow Mary to travel with our correspondent to her master’s residence for fear of the unknown. Mary’s mother was away in the farm during a visit by The Punch. The All Progressives Congress has assured Nigerians that this will be their last Christmas celebration under the bondage of insecurity, corruption, unemployment, widespread hopelessness foisted on them by poor leadership. This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. The party said hope was in the horizon for the millions of Nigerians who had been unable to celebrate this year due to the prevailing gloomy atmosphere across the land. APC said, “Many could not travel home due to the fear of kidnapping, ethno-religious crisis and insurgency, depending on which part of the country they are from. “Many could not celebrate due to the effects of the economic downturn, as manifested in the weakening Naira and falling oil prices, both exacerbated by widespread corruption. “Many will mark the holidays in darkness as the country’s public power supply seemed to have fallen in a direct proportion to the huge funds ostensibly pumped into the sector in the past few years. Many would be stuck on the roads that have become clogged due to their poor state. “While there is no magic wand to solve the myriad of problems facing our country in one fell swoop, an APC government will begin to positively impact on the citizenry within its first few months at the helm, to such an extent that Nigerians will have a better Christmas celebration in 2015.” The party said Nigerians held the power to bringing about the much-needed change, hence they should vote wisely during the February 2015 general elections so they could install a government that would address, squarely, the challenges facing the country. According to Mohammed, the APC had through its manifesto, entered into an honest social contract with Nigerians. He, however, said the party was aware that it could not do it alone; hence the need to have the consent and participation of the people. He explained that the APC’s eight pledges for a better Nigeria, highlighted in the manifesto, formed the core of the party’s social contract with Nigerians. The party pledged that in its first year in office, it would create 3million new jobs annually through a public work programmes. It said it would shift the economy towards value-added production which would be the party’s primary economic target; it would strengthen security by employing at least 100,000 police officers and establishing a properly-trained and equipped Federal Anti-Terrorism Multi- Agency Task Force. www.punchng.com/news/2014-your-last-year-in-bondage-apc-tells-nigerians/ |

APC's presidential candidate Gen.Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) recently raised more than N54 million through the crowd to assist him fund his 2015 presidential campaign. In a statement released on his official Facebook page,he explained why he adopted crowdfunding rather than Jonathan's method. He said Jonathan's method did not carry the ordinary Nigerians along.According to him, carrying the people along will make him more accountable to the public if voted into office. Read the statement he released on his facebook page below... “This is my approach, God knows and you know it. Go and ask my former running mate, Pastor Tunde Bakare. I heard him saying in an interview that when we started campaign with him, he never knew there was such a large number of people in the north. So my strength is mainly with the ordinary people. “You know N100 is a lot of money for them, and I believed they will make that sacrifice especially when I told them that I’m going to sign the cheque to get even a kobo out of that amount. That is why I depend on them and we are taking this idea mainly from what happen in United States. “When Obama came out to contest, he was a colourful person. The big companies were for him. But he knew that he needed the ground foot soldiers. So, when he came up with this idea, he was able to finance his campaign without looking for money bags or any influential person. So, he remains independent. This is what I want to achieve." |

APC has described the ruling party PDP as a Janus-faced bumbling party that does not do what it preaches. This follows a continuous blasting of APC and its leaders by PDP.Speaking yesterday in Abuja,APC's National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said PDP has been involved in a series of verbal attacks against General Buhari, his running mate Prof. Osinbajo,APC leader Tinubu and the entire APC members despite PDP preaching issues-based electioneering. According to him,President GEJ is moved by the emergence of Buhari as APC's candidate, his selection of Prof. Osinbajo as his running mate and the positive reactions from Nigerians. “What is issues-based in calling General Buhari a ‘semi-literate jackboot’ as the PDP’s National Secretary Wale Oladipo has incautiously said? Where are the issues in the pejorative reference to Prof.Osinbajo as an ‘acolyte’ of Tinubu, or in describing Tinubu himself as a puppeteer, as the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh has said in the most vitriolic and irresponsible statement that can ever be issued by the spokesman of a ruling party anywhere? “Where are the issues contained in the statement by the serial bumbler and gormandizer called Doyin Okupe, who regards Buhari’s refusal to enrich himself from the public till as a vice rather than a virtue? Why would a ruling party go after the jugular of the opposition simply because it took its time in choosing its presidential running mate, especially since it did not run foul of any electoral law in doing so? “The truth is that the Jonathan Presidency and the PDP have no issues to canvass during the electioneering for the 2015 general elections because they have wasted the mandate given to them by Nigerians on the altar of unprecedented corruption, incomprehensible incompetence and cluelessness and perhaps the worst leadership ever inflicted on our country." President Jonathan will battle it out with General Buhari in 2015 elections in what many people believe will be the most fiercely contested election. Source: http:///4nx |
