Many people ask, "Can squats make my bum bigger?" The short answer is yes...but not in the way many people think. Understanding how the glute muscles work can help you exercise more effectively and avoid injury. How Do Squats Make Your Buttocks Bigger? Squats and other glute exercises stimulate the muscles of the buttocks, especially the gluteus maximus, which is the largest muscle in the body. When these muscles are pushed through resistance training, they adapt by becoming stronger and bigger over time. This process is known as muscle hypertrophy. As the muscles increase in size, the buttocks can appear fuller, firmer, and more rounded. Is the Bum Made of Fat or Muscle? The buttocks consist of both fat and muscle. The gluteal muscles are under the fat, while the layer of fat... See the rest of the post here

What is De Quervain’s tenosynovitis and why does my thumb hurt for thumb pain? is inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist. It usually causes pain while gripping, lifting, or repetitive thumb use. Why does it hurt while using my phone or when typing? Frequent scrolling, texting, and pain when typing on keyboards overload the thumb tendons. Repetition without rest leads to irritation and swelling. Why is resting or immobilization a top treatment? Resting the thumb with a splint is a first-line treatment because it: Reduces tendon friction → allowing inflammation to come down Prevents repetitive strain from the daily activities (you do that worsen it) Promotes healing by keeping the thumb in a neutral position Breaks the pain cycle, especially in early stages Without rest, symptoms often keep reading here

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy in Lagos for pain relief. Many people ask if massage alone can fix their back pain. Massage is very helpful, but it works best when used as part of a full physiotherapy plan. Does massage help back pain? Yes. Massage helps to relax your tight muscles, improve blood flow, and reduce pain. It can ease stiffness after long periods of sitting, bad posture, or mild muscle strain. In physiotherapy practice, massage is usually used at the beginning of a treatment session to prepare the body for movement and exercise. This approach answers many related queries patients have about quick pain relief. However, massage typically treats symptoms, not always the cause of back pain. Back pain is one of the most common issues we treat at St. Joseph’s. Many people ask: Can a massage gun help with back pain? The answer is yes; if used properly. How Does a Massage Gun Help Back Pain? Massage guns use fast pulses to relax tight muscles. This can help with knots/ reduce tension, improve local blood flow, and ease soreness in your upper and lower back. They’re also helpful for people with muscle strain from sitting too long or working out. Where Should You Use a Massage Gun? Focus on the muscles (soft contractile tissues) around your spine, not directly on any bones. Good areas include: - Lower back muscles (like the erector spinae) - Upper back muscles (like the traps and lats) Avoid using the massage gun on your bony spine, neck bones, or any injured areas. How Often Should You Use It? Start with short periods, like 30 to 60 seconds per muscle group. Use the lowest setting first. You can use it once or PLEASE FINISH READING ON ST JOSEPH'S PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC PAGE HERE

Back pain is one of Nigeria’s most common health complaints, affecting people from office workers to drivers. Below are 15 real questions Nigerians ask us frequently, with simple answers from our Physiotherapists at our clinics in Lagos. 1. Why does my lower back hurt after sitting or driving for long? Prolonged sitting, bad posture, and poor seat support strain your lower back muscles. Take short breaks, stretch every 30 to 45 minutes (maybe stop at petrol stations) , and ensure lumbar support. A physiotherapist can teach correct posture and relieve tightness. 2. Can stress or Lagos traffic really cause back pain? Yes. Physical and emotional stress tighten muscles and reduce blood flow to your back. Time spent in traffic adds to fatigue. Regular stretching, deep breathing, and good seating posture can help prevent pain. 3. What sleeping position or mattress is best for back pain? Use a medium-firm mattress that supports the natural spine curve. Sleep on your back or your side with a small pillow under the knees or between the legs to keep the spine aligned. 4. Does being fat increase back pain? Excess weight, especially around the belly or abdomen, adds pressure to the lower back. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and weight control reduces pain recurrence. 5. Do I need surgery for my back pain? Hardly ever. Most back pain improves with physiotherapy, exercise, manual therapy, and posture correction. Surgery is only needed if there’s nerve damage, severe weakness, or loss of bladder control. 6. Should I rest completely when I have back pain? A short rest (1–2 days) is fine, but extended bed rest worsens stiffness. Gentle movement, guided stretches, and daily walking would help you heal faster. 7. Can exercise really cure back pain? Yes. Strengthening core and back muscles stabilizes your spine and prevents future pain. Physiotherapists design safe, personalized routines that improve flexibility and posture. 8. My back pain spreads down my leg, what does this mean? That may indicate nerve irritation or a slipped disc. Avoid heavy lifting and see a physiotherapist for a proper assessment and non-surgical management options. 9. Can herbal remedies or massage or Aboniki cure back pain? They may give temporary relief but rarely fix the root cause. Always seek professional care to identify the source and prevent it from worsening. Why does my shoulder hurt after lifting something from the back of the car?🤷🏾 Many people feel sudden shoulder pain after trying to grab or lift a heavy item from the back seat while still sitting in the front seat of a car. This awkward movement twists the body and overloads one arm. The shoulder joint is not designed for this twist-stretch-and-lift action, which explains why some people ask, “Am I worsening my injury by doing this again?”. What happens inside the shoulder joint? When you stretch backwards with one arm, the muscles and tendons of the rotator cuff of your shoulder, are pulled beyond their normal position. This may cause small tears, inflammation, or even a popping sound in your shoulder. The shoulder joint is shallow, so sudden weight from an odd angle can easily strain it. Why is it dangerous to lift something with my shoulder this way? The risks include: Shoulder muscle strain or tendon injury Shoulder impingement or bursitis Long-term weakness or stiffness if untreated Ignoring the pain may lead to...see rest on the physiotherapy website blog

Recovering from a stroke can be a challenging journey, not just for the stroke survivor but also for their family and loved ones. One important aspect of post-stroke care is choosing the right and best caregiver. Whether you’re hiring a professional or relying on a family member, it’s important to understand the skills and tools necessary for effective care. At St. Joseph’s Physiotherapy Clinic, we’ve guided countless families through this process, and we’re here to help. Key Skills a Post-Stroke Caregiver Should Have 1. Basic Medical Knowledge A caregiver should know how to check the blood pressure, pulse and monitor other vital signs, recognize stroke warning signs, and how to respond to emergencies like sudden changes in speech, balance, or consciousness. 2. Patience and Compassion Stroke recovery takes time. A caregiver must be empathetic and patient, especially when assisting with tasks that the stroke patient may find frustrating, like dressing or eating. 3. Mobility Assistance Caregivers should be trained in safe techniques to help stroke survivors move, whether it's transferring from a bed to a chair or helping with walking aids like walking frames or wheel chairs. Improper handling can cause injuries for both the caregiver and the stroke patient. 4. .. .. want to finish this? Read the REST HERE

We often hear patients express concerns about numbness and tingling in their legs after spending too long on the toilet. If you've ever wondered, "Why do my legs feel heavy or tingly when I sit on the toilet for too long?", you're not alone. Let's look into the physiological process behind this common issue and provide practical ways to alleviate it. Why Do I Experience Numbness and Tingling in My Legs? The primary reason for experiencing numbness, tingling, or a sensation of pins and needles in your legs when sitting too long on the toilet is nerve compression. Here's a closer look at what happens: 1. Nerve Compression: Sitting for extended periods, especially on a hard surface like a toilet seat, can compress the nerves in your legs. The sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back through your hips and down each leg, is particularly prone to this compression. This can lead to numbness, tingling, and a sensation of pins and needles in the legs. This is usually at higher risk with seats that do not extend to the region right behind the knees, but end somewhere along the back of the thigh. 2. Reduced Blood Flow: Maintaining one position for too long can restrict blood circulation to your legs. When blood flow is restricted, it can cause your legs to feel heavy and numb. This is because your muscles and nerves aren't receiving the oxygen and nutrients they need to function properly. 3. Bad Posture: Leaning forward or holding an awkward posture while sitting on the toilet can exacerbate nerve compression and reduce blood flow, further contributing to these uncomfortable sensations. How to Reduce or Avoid Numbness and Tingling In your Feet and Legs If you've experienced numbness in your legs from sitting too long on the toilet, or experience that your legs fall asleep, there are several ways to mitigate these symptoms in the rest of the article here

Before you take unprofessional advice on your dislocated shoulder, see a medically professional post on the matter here>What To Do When You Have A Shoulder Dislocation youre welcome!! |
When your shoulder dislocates, it means the ball part of your shoulder moves out of its socket, usually during sports or an accident. A shoulder dislocation can be very painful and can make moving your shoulder hard, affecting how you live your life. Understanding Shoulder Dislocation Your shoulder is a “ball-and-socket joint that helps you move your arm in many directions, like reaching for things or doing chores. It stays in place because of tissues like your ligaments, cartilage, and muscles. But if you hit your shoulder joint hard, these tissues can get strained and tear, and your shoulder can pop out of place. Most of the time, the shoulder dislocates to the front, especially during activities like throwing a ball. But it can also dislocate to the back if you twist your arm in certain ways. Symptoms of Shoulder Dislocation If your shoulder dislocates, it'll hurt a lot immediately. Your arm may feel numb or tingly, and you might see that your shoulder looks strange, awkward or swollen. You might also have trouble moving your arm or feel pain when you touch or try to move your shoulder. If you feel any of these things at your shoulder joint, especially after a..READ THE REST OF THE ARTICLE ON OUR PHYSIO BLOG HERE <--

As the earning power of Nigerians has recently taken a nosedive due to the high inflation rate, food insecurity, exchange rate etc; its imperative that our most cherished wealth is protected from the current woes..our Health. Without further ado (and in no particular order) here are 7 ways to spend less on your healthcare in Nigeria WHEN you have to. 1. Prevention Is Cheaper Than Cure Schedule annual medical tests to preempt potentially expensive-to-treat diseases. Some diagnostic centers such as Iwosan wellness and MeCure have bundled test packages, so you don't have to bother about which tests to run. Diagnosing any disease before any symptoms appear can considerably reduce the cost of treatment, and potentially save your life. Some good examples are the diagnosis of hypertension to prevent stroke, pap smears and prostate exams to identify cancers in early stages, before they grow and spread. 2. Buy Local Buying your medications, medical supplies and consumables from NAFDAC approved local manufacturers can easily save you as much as 70% of what the imported brands cost. These companies offer more affordable medications, and therefore cheaper healthcare at the same quality, because most of their running costs and expenses are domiciled in Naira, therefore their costs of medications do not rise in tandem with the dollar rates. Some of the local manufacturers of note are Juhel, Fidson, Emzor, May & Baker etc 3. Know Thy Healthcare Professional It's important to know the role, specialization and scope of practice of the healthcare professional you're seeing. It's important to seek specialist care in cases that require them, as a lot of money can be spent on healthcare, without a definite diagnosis, necessary referral and appropriate management of the condition. E.g if you are hypertensive, you should see a cardiologist; if you have a toothache, see a dentist; If you've had a fracture, see an orthopaedic surgeon; if you've had a stroke or are post-op orthopaedic surgery, see a physiotherapist for your rehabilitation. Seeing the right healthcare professional will not only save you money you may spend hospital hopping, but get you the appropriate treatment and recovery in record time. 4. Sweet Dreams (are made of health insurance) Health insurance coverage is the most obvious of the lot. You don't want to be surprised by a healthcare expense in this current economy, and have to pay out of pocket. If you pay for a health cover, when you or a family member who is covered inevitably falls ill, it's not your problem anymore, but that of your health insurer! Yes, some money will be spent to purchase the insurance plan, but health insurance is designed to let you get access to healthcare services worth up to 20X the money you paid. The health insurance systems pool in funds from everyone, and spend on those insured who need access to quality care. It's basically a case of “pay N1, collect N20 in healthcare services back”. Some of the major health insurers in Nigeria are Hygeia HMO, AXA Mansard, Reliance HMO, MetroHealth etc. They also now offer monthly payment plans to Improve access to cheaper health insurance Please read OUR BLOG for the rest of the post |
As Physiotherapists, we understand the rich cultural tapestry of Nigeria, where traditional and religious practices often mix with modern healthcare. One such tradition is the culture of traditional bone setters in Nigeria, who are people well known in their communities who specialize in setting fractures, dislocations, mending broken bones, and physical rehabilitation through their time-honored methods. Who is A Traditional Bone Setter? Traditional bone setters in Nigeria are informally trained people within our local communities who have inherited and passed down the art of bone setting through generations. They employ a range of techniques, often involving massage, herbal remedies, and splints, to treat dislocations, fractures, mend broken bones, and offer some sort of rehabilitation afterwards. The cultural significance of traditional bone setting is undeniable, as a 2008 study stated that as many as 85% of patients with fractures in Nigeria, go first to bone setters. How Traditional Bone Setters Work These practitioners rely on traditional knowledge and experience to diagnose and treat fractures. Their methods often involve hands-on manipulation of the affected area, application of herbal concoctions, strong alcohol mixes for pain and the use of locally sourced materials for splints and support. While their approach is deeply ingrained in cultural practices, it is essential to consider the limitations and risks associated with traditional bone setting. Are Bone Setters Safe? While traditional bonesetters play a cultural and social role in local healthcare, their methods lack scientific precision. Limited understanding of anatomy, non-utilization of radiographic medical imaging (e.g x-rays) and infection control may lead to complications, and the use of untested materials may not provide adequate support for proper healing. In many cases, misalignments and improper healing can result in long-term and more expensive consequences.. continue reading a Physiotherapists perspective here

Analgesics, better known as painkillers, are drugs or medications taken to relieve pain. However, prolonged use of drugs may cause side effects, which is where topical analgesics came into the play. Present in a variety of forms such as creams, gels, sprays, and even skin patches; topical analgesics reduce both acute pain (such as muscle aches, strains, sprains, tendinitis, and acute back pain) and chronic pain (such as osteoarthritis and low back pain) with faster and direct relief, and less side effects than their tablets and capsules. How do pain relief creams work? They are applied directly to the painful area (usually on the skin), where they are absorbed and act in the specific area. Common ingredients present in topical analgesics are: Counter irritants: Menthol, Methyl salicylate, capsicum and camphor. These ingredients function by creating a less severe pain and local irritation of the skin to counteract the initial pain, which leads to a reduction in pain sensitivity (the body’s ability to sense the pain). Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID): This relieves pain by reducing inflammation. Common examples include diclofenac, piroxicam, ibuprofen, indomethacin, and ketoprofen. Pain relief gels or Topical analgesics, can be divided into two categories based on the sensation they produce when applied on the skin. 1. Hot gels: They produce an initial cooling sensation when applied due to the methanol but shortly develop into a burning sensation. 2. Cold gels: These provide a stronger cooling effect without any burning sensation. Choosing a topical pain relief gel can be quite daunting with so many options, below we will be listing the top ten pain relief creams / topical analgesics in Nigeria in no particular order. 1. Neurogesic Ointment Containing both methyl salicylate and methanol, this hot gel is quickly becoming a household name among patients with chronic pain. 2. Fastum Gel This colourless cold gel contains ketoprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs). It reduces pain and inflammation while providing a cooling sensation.
