Iran has declared that it will no longer abide by any of the restrictions imposed by the 2015 nuclear deal. In a statement it said it would no longer observe limitations on its capacity for enrichment, the level of enrichment, the stock of enriched material, or research and development. The statement came after a meeting of the Iranian cabinet in Tehran. It comes amid heightened tensions over the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani by the US in Baghdad. Under the 2015 accord, Iran agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in international inspectors in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions. US President Donald Trump abandoned it in 2018, saying he wanted to force Iran to negotiate a new deal that would place indefinite curbs on its nuclear programme and also halt its development of ballistic missiles. Iran refused and has since been gradually rolling back its commitments under the agreement. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-51001167 |
President Trump has warned the US is "targeting" 52 Iranian sites and will strike "very fast and very hard" if Tehran hits Americans or US assets. His comments followed the US assassination of Qasem Soleimani, a top Iranian general, in a drone strike. Iran has vowed to avenge his killing. Mr Trump wrote on Twitter that Iran "is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets" in response to the general's death. He said the US has identified 52 Iranian sites, some "at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD" if Tehran strikes the US. "The USA wants no more threats!" Trump added. The president said the 52 targets represented the 52 Americans held hostage in Iran for more than a year from late 1979, after they were seized at the US embassy in Tehran. Mr Trump's tweets came hours after a huge funeral procession for Soleimani was held in Baghdad, where he was killed. Several rocket attacks shook the area shortly after the procession, including one in the Green Zone near the US embassy. Several were fired north of the Iraqi capital at Balad air base, which houses US forces. The Iraqi military said nobody had been hurt in the attacks. No group has yet said it was behind the development. Pro-Iranian militants have been blamed for other recent attacks. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-50996602

Iran's most powerful military commander, General Qasem Soleimani, has been killed by a US air strike in Iraq. The 62-year old spearheaded Iranian military operations in the Middle East as head of Iran's elite Quds Force. He was killed at Baghdad airport, alongside local Iran-backed militias, early on Friday in a strike ordered by US President Donald Trump. Gen Soleimani's killing marks a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran. Under his leadership, Iran had bolstered Hezbollah in Lebanon and other pro-Iranian militant groups, expanded Iran's military presence in Iraq and Syria and orchestrated Syria's offensive against rebel groups in the country's long civil war. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said "severe revenge awaits the criminals" behind the attack. He also announced three days of national mourning. Gen Soleimani was widely seen as the second most powerful figure in Iran behind the Ayatollah Khamenei. His Quds Force, an elite unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, reported directly to the Ayatollah and he was hailed as a heroic national figure. But the US has called the commander and the Quds Force terrorists and holds them responsible for the deaths of hundreds of US personnel. President Trump, who was in Florida at the time of the strike, tweeted an image of the American flag shortly after the news broke. A statement from the Pentagon said Gen Soleimani "was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region". "This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans," it added. Meanwhile, global oil prices have soared by more than 4% in the wake of the attack.
