NIMENA takes Nigerian startups global with maritime, energy innovation night in Singapore


Nigeria’s push to position its innovation ecosystem on the global stage is gaining momentum, as the Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA) had unveiled plans to showcase homegrown startups to international investors in Singapore.

The initiative, themed “NIMENA Innovation Night,” is scheduled for April 24, 2026, and is expected to convene global venture capitalists, technology investors, policymakers and high-growth startups, in a strategic move to deepen Nigeria’s footprint in maritime and energy innovation.

In a press release issued by NIMENA on Monday and signed by its National General Secretary, Engr. Dr. Azubuike John Chuku, the institution said the event would hold at The Great Room, Centennial Tower, Singapore, as part of efforts to connect Nigerian innovators with global markets, capital and advanced ecosystems.

The statement noted that the event would serve as a high-level platform to showcase innovative Nigerian startups across marine, offshore and energy sectors, while facilitating direct engagement with investors, promoting international partnerships and strengthening Nigeria’s position within the global blue economy.

The National Chairman of NIMENA, Engr. Dr. Eferebo I. Sylvanus, described the initiative as a defining moment for the country’s maritime and energy sectors, noting that it aligns with broader efforts to reposition Nigeria towards an innovation-driven economy.

“This event represents a defining moment for Nigeria’s maritime and energy sectors. We are creating a global bridge that connects Nigerian innovation to international capital, technology, and opportunity. It is about repositioning Nigeria from a resource-dependent economy to an innovation-driven maritime nation,” he said.

He said the programme forms part of a wider global acceleration effort designed to link Nigerian startups to investment pipelines, foster technology transfer and unlock opportunities within international innovation ecosystems.

The institution further stated that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s blue economy agenda, which seeks to drive sustainable growth, enhance local content development, create jobs and stimulate industrial expansion.

It added that the event is expected to attract foreign direct investment into Nigerian startups, promote indigenous solutions and support youth-driven innovation, while strengthening the country’s competitiveness in the global maritime sector.

NIMENA also disclosed that invitations have been extended to key stakeholders, including government agencies, professional bodies, diplomatic missions and international partners, with expectations that the engagement would catalyse long-term collaborations to accelerate growth across Nigeria’s maritime and energy innovation landscape.

A socio-political group, Nigeria Youths In Politics (NYIP) has condemned in strong terms the killing of 28 people in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing the attack as “barbaric, senseless, and a grave affront to humanity.”

The group says the tragic loss of lives and damage of properties across communities in the country must be brought to an end, urging relevant authorities to move beyond “periodic reassurances” and “temporary measures,” to a more proactive way of preventing mass slaughter of vulnerable locals.

At a press conference in Abuja, the Chairman NWC, Hon. Felix Idowu expressed deep sadness over the Palm Sunday killings, saying escalations and violent aggression on communities are unacceptable.


The group proposed the Community Resilience Against Terrorism (C-RAT) Initiative, a framework positioning communities as the first line of defence through early warning systems, local vigilance structures, and real-time communication channels with security agencies.

The group extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the affected communities, and the people of Plateau State.

It expresses concern that the continued wave of killings is eroding peace, coexistence, and national unity, while also weakening public confidence in the government’s ability to protect lives and property.

"The tragic loss of lives in this manner underscores the urgent need for improved security measures across our nation. We are calling on our security agencies to adopt a proactive stance in safeguarding the lives and properties of all Nigerians. it is vital that they move beyond reactive responses and employ strategic preventive actions to protect our community."

It called for a united national response to insecurity, urging community leaders, religious institutions, civil society organisations, and all well-meaning Nigerians to collaborate with security agencies in promoting peace and vigilance.

NYIP reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice, supporting victims of violence, and contributing to national efforts aimed at building a safer and more secure society for all Nigerians.

Regarding the 2027 general elections, the group urged INEC to engage with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a hitch free process and increased public confidence in the electoral system.

Nigeria Youths in Politics Condemns Jos Killings, Call for Justice

A socio-political organization, Nigeria Youths in Politics (NYP) has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the recent attacks in Jos which led to loss of lives, describing the incident as tragic and unacceptable.

In an statement issued on Tuesday by National Working Committee, the youth body strongly condemned all forms of violence, noting that such acts threaten the peace and unity necessary for national development.

The group in the statement signed by its Director of Media, Dr. Alex Nwankwo, extended its heartfelt condolences to families and communities affected by the attack, emphasizing that no society can thrive amid fear, division, and avoidable bloodshed.

It called on the security agencies to arrest the perpetrators of the dastardly act and ensure that justice is served swiftly in line with the nation's extant laws.

“As a youth-driven body, we believe that the future of Nigeria depends on peace, unity, and mutual respect among all people, regardless of ethnic, religious, or political differences,” the statement read.

The the youth organization called on relevant authorities to take swift and decisive action to restore calm in the affected areas, ensure justice for victims, and strengthen measures to protect lives and property.

The NYP urged Nigerian youths to remain calm and law-abiding during these challenging periods, cautioning against the spread of misinformation and encouraged dialogue which it described as a tool for resolving conflicts.

18 Osun Lawmakers Set to Dump Accord Party Amid Leadership Crisis, Court Battle

Fresh political uncertainty is brewing in Osun State as no fewer than 18 lawmakers of the State House of Assembly are reportedly set to dump the Accord Party, barely months after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to a release signed by Yusuf Adegboye,the Secretary of the Accord Libration Movement of Osun Accord party, The planned exit, according to multiple party sources, is being driven by growing discontent over the party’s internal instability, particularly the unresolved leadership crisis currently before the court. The lingering legal battle over who controls the party structure has reportedly created confusion and weakened confidence among key stakeholders.

Insiders revealed that the lawmakers, who had initially moved to Accord in what was seen as a strategic political realignment, are now reconsidering their positions amid fears that the party may not provide the stable platform required for their political survival.

A source familiar with the development said the situation within the party has become increasingly untenable. “There is no clear leadership direction at the moment. The issue of who is in charge is still in court, and that uncertainty is affecting everyone,” the source said.

The crisis was further compounded by the resignation of Hon. Adesina Atanda Rabiu, the lawmaker representing Iwo State Constituency, whose exit is widely viewed as a signal of deeper cracks within the party. Observers believe his departure may have emboldened other aggrieved members to consider leaving.

Another party insider suggested that the lawmakers’ loyalty to the platform has been significantly shaken. “They came into Accord expecting a cohesive structure, but what they met is a party battling itself in court. That is not the kind of environment politicians want to operate in, especially with elections around the corner,” the source alleged.

Political analysts warn that the potential mass exit could significantly weaken the Accord Party’s presence in Osun and disrupt ongoing political calculations in the state. The development is also seen as having possible implications for Governor Ademola Adeleke, amid speculations of political alignments involving the party.

It was gathered that bearing any last minute change, members representing : Olorunda
, Ifelodun, Ifedayo, Ila, Ife South, Ife East, Aiyedire, Olaoluwa, Ayedaade, Ilesa East, Osogbo, Ede South, Orolu/Irepodun, Ife Central and Egbedore could be on their way out of the Accord party.

“The instability within Accord could ripple into broader political dynamics in Osun,” an analyst noted. “If the lawmakers eventually leave, it will diminish the party’s influence and could affect alliances tied to the upcoming election.”

With the court yet to resolve the leadership dispute, uncertainty continues to hang over the party’s future, leaving members and stakeholders in a state of apprehension as the political landscape ahead of 2027 begins to take shape.

Leader of the Alternative Movement, Segun Showunmi, on Tuesday paid a surprise visit to an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in the Wassa area of the Federal Capital Territory, where he donated relief materials and medical supplies to support displaced families living in the settlement, ABUJAPRESS reports

Showunmi, who is also a governorship aspirant in Ogun State, arrived at the camp with members of his entourage to identify with the residents and offer words of encouragement to those facing difficult circumstances following their displacement.

During the visit, he presented assorted relief materials, including food items and medical supplies, aimed at improving the living conditions and health of the camp residents.

The politician, however, expressed concern over the poor state of the facilities at the camp, noting that the structures accommodating hundreds of displaced persons were not adequate for decent living.

Speaking with residents and community leaders, Showunmi urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to urgently intervene to improve conditions in the camp and ensure that the displaced persons receive the care and dignity they deserve.

“What I have seen here today is deeply concerning. These are fellow Nigerians who have been forced out of their homes through no fault of theirs, and they deserve to live in conditions that reflect dignity and humanity. Government must do more to ensure that IDPs are properly catered for,” Showunmi said.

He added that beyond emergency relief materials, there was a need for long-term solutions that would help displaced persons rebuild their lives.

“While humanitarian support like this is important, we must begin to think about sustainable solutions, particularly education for the children, healthcare, and opportunities that will help these families regain stability and hope for the future,” he added.

Residents of the camp expressed appreciation for the visit and the donations, noting that such gestures bring hope to displaced communities struggling with daily challenges.

The historic tournament was held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Unique Open University Ikeja Campus, Agidingbi, bringing together over 60 student-athletes from four tertiary institutions across Nigeria, including the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH). The athletes competed in eight high-energy exhibition games witnessed by over 500 spectators, marking a significant milestone in the development of university-level flag football in Nigeria.

Despite facing strong competition, the UOU team demonstrated exceptional teamwork, discipline, and tactical execution, finishing the tournament unbeaten to claim the championship title. With this victory, Unique Open University becomes the first university in Nigeria to win a national collegiate flag football tournament, etching its name into the history of Nigerian university sports.

The event also reflected the broader developmental impact of the NCFFL initiative, with 65% of participating athletes playing flag football for the first time, and approximately 25% progressing from the Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League (NSSFFL)—underscoring the effectiveness of NAFA’s grassroots-to-tertiary pathway.
