Gov Sim Fubara of Rivers State has explained the incident which happened at the temporal chamber of the Rivers State House earlier on Wednesday where he had arrived to present the 2025 budget.

Gov Fubara said against the rumour on social media, that he officially sent a letter informing the Speaker of his coming to present the budget and also personally called him and other lawmakers, including sending them messages on Whatsapp.

A Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof Olusola Adeyeye has revealed than business men are often used by Politicians and ruling Political Parties (PDP and APC) to recycle funds which are used for elections and other purposes.

1. We are all aware of the recent Supreme Court judgments and pronouncements regarding aspects of the lingering political disputes in our dear State.

2. Although we disagree with the judgments, we are bound to obey the orders made therein as a law-abiding government.

3. Since inception, we have conducted the affairs of government within the framework of our constitution, due process and rule of law.

4. While we are not above mistakes because we are human, we believe that we have not, as a government, done anything deliberate to trample on the rule of law or the hallowed principles of constitutional governance.

5. Accordingly, I have had a meeting with my team of lawyers and they have assured me that the certified true copy of the judgments may be available to them Friday March 7, 2025.

6. I assure you that upon the receipt of certified judgments, we shall study their ramifications and implement them without reservations to move the State forward.

7. Furthermore, given the outlawing of caretaker arrangements in the local government system, I hereby direct the Heads of Personnel Management to immediately takeover the administration of the 23 Local Government Councils pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.

8. I further direct the outgoing local government Chairmen to formally hand over the levers of power to the Heads of Personnel Management by Monday, March 3, 2025.

9. Although, our dear State seems to be back in trying times, I urge everyone to remain calm and peacefully go about with their legitimate daily activities as we continue to do everything in our power to advance our responsibilities to the citizens.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY THE RIVERS STATE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY CAUCUS.

Gentlemen of the press.

1. We have invited you this morning to extinguish the delusion, prevarication, lies, and the deliberate distortion of facts and judgements of courts as it affects the Rivers State House of Assembly under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, the Governor of Rivers State.

2. This has become very necessary as the governor has procured the services of some persons, including Senior Advocates of Nigeria, to turn the law and judgments of court upside down to skew public opinion to align with the Governor’s position and give him a reason not to obey any judgment of court that is against him or not in his favour.

3. We wish to caution Mr. Femi Falana SAN, to stop misinterpreting judgments of court. It is regrettable that a very senior lawyer of his status will be amplifying the falsehood from non-lawyers and political merchants.

Falana, lied about the dates of the judgment of Hon. Justice J.K. Omotosho and the purported defection that never took place with the intention of misleading the public.

We wish to warn these false content creators and political merchants that it is very possible to continue to eat from the treasury of Rivers State without tampering with the position of the law, and the intentional misinterpretation of judgment of courts.

4. For the records, there were several reliefs aside from the presentation of the 2024 budget sought by the Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule led Assembly before the Hon. Justice J.K. Omotosho, which included the determination of who is the speaker and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly; non interference by the governor of Rivers State with the activities and functions of the Martin’s led Assembly; protection by the Inspector General of Police to ensure adequate security for them to carry out their duties; and the disbandment of any other House of Assembly in Rivers State or Self-acclaimed Speaker other than Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule and the 27 members.

5. All the reliefs sought by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule were granted by the Hon. Justice J. K. Omotosho on the 22nd of January 2024.

We hereby produce the orders of the Hon. Justice J. K. Omotosho, as affirmed by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
We refer the Press to pages 6 to 16 of the Judgement.

6. It’s instructive to state emphatically that by the withdrawal of the Governor’s appeal before the Supreme Court and the dismissal of the suit with cost, the judgment and all orders made by Hon. Justice J. K. Omotosho, which was upheld by the Court of Appeal, takes effect immediately and forever. This, of course, includes the affirmation of Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewule as Speaker and the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly as the ONLY House of Assembly of Rivers State and the directive to the Inspector General of Police to provide security to enable the Rivers State House of Assembly to continue to perform their functions without hindrance.

7. We wish to call the attention of the Governor of Rivers State, that in his Notice of Withdrawal before the Supreme Court, he rightly referred to Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewule as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Therefore, there is no more contest as to who the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly is. And any attempt to continue to deal with any person or forum as the Rivers State House of Assembly is not only contemptuous of the judgment of the Supreme Court but a direct call for political anarchy or social lawlessness.
The shameless and contemptuous actions of giving any assignment whatsoever to anybody purporting same to be Rivers State House of Assembly other than Rt. Hon. Martins. Amaewule led House of Assembly should stop forthwith.

8. The Governor of Rivers State having failed to use the Court of Justice Wali to unseat the 27 lawmakers, has initiated a plot at a Federal High Court in Rivers State to declare the seats of the Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewule and the 27 members vacant, even when a Federal High Court, Appeal Court and the Supreme Court have all affirmed Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewule and the 27 lawmakers as the only Rivers State House of Assembly.

9. We are calling on the Executive Arm to execute the judgment of the Court of Appeal, affirming Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewule and the 27 lawmakers as the only Rivers State House of Assembly to avoid any breakdown of law and order in Rivers State.

There is a serious commotion at the Lagos State House of Assembly over a grand plot to remove the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, from office.

Mudashiru Obasa, the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has said he remains the rightful speaker, citing constitutional provisions as the basis for his assertion.

This declaration was made on Saturday during a welcome event hosted in his honor by supporters from Agege, Alimosho, and Kosofe local government areas in Ikeja GRA.

Obasa's impeachment on January 13, 2025, was a result of allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, which led to his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, being elected and sworn in as his successor.

Despite this, Obasa seems determined to challenge the outcome, describing his impeachment as unlawful and null and void.

Obasa argued that the impeachment process didn't adhere to constitutional procedures. Despite this, he's expressed willingness to accept his removal if it's done in line with constitutional guidelines.

“I have been a parliamentarian for over two decades and I’m the longest serving ember in the Lagos State House of Assembly and no one as we speak has surpassed my history, position and everything,” he said.

“I believe in removal, there is no impeachment in the assembly; you cannot impeach speaker. Probably there is a mistake from them. You can only remove the speaker and if you want to remove, you must ensure you follow the rules. I am not afraid of being removed, what else am I looking for?”

“What I’m saying: if you want to do that, do it constitutionally. Follow the due process,” he said.

SaharaReporters earlier reported how Obasa pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to have his impeachment nullified.

SaharaReporters also reported on Friday night that Obasa was set to return to Lagos today (Saturday) and that his loyalists were planning a lavish welcome party for him.

Obasa was impeached earlier this month for gross misconduct and abuse of office, prompting his swift departure to the US, a source close to the Lagos House of Assembly told SaharaReporters.

It was learnt that the former speaker who fell out of favour with President Tinubu returned to Abuja last weekend after assurances of no arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or any other law enforcement agencies.

It was earlier reported that the former Speaker was facing scrutiny from the EFCC over allegations of misappropriating ₦43.5 billion in state funds.

Sources told SaharaReporters that during a meeting with Tinubu, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and some other All Progressives Congress stakeholders following Obasa’s impeachment, he argued that his impeachment ought to be nullified because he had hidden the two maces in possession of the state House of Assembly.

However, he was informed that the mace used during the session in which he was impeached was brought from the old Assembly building.

One of the sources said, “President Tinubu had summoned all the stakeholders; Lagos lawmakers, Lagos Governor’s Advisory Council, Obasa himself and Lagos Governor to Abuja for consultations and understanding.

“The President was unhappy the removal of Obasa was orchestrated without his express approval, and that he learnt about it from the news and social media. Except this lack of approval, he told Obasa that “he was not born a Speaker, and that speakership was not created with him”.

“Obasa pushed for the nullification of his impeachment on the grounds that the mace used to conduct business of the day on that fateful day wasn’t the official mace of the Lagos House of Assembly, considering he hid away the two maces while travelling out of the country.

“The lawmakers defeated his argument by confirming the mace used as the old mace of the parliament in the old building of the assembly. Seeing the futility of his claims, Obasa requested the President to prevail on the new leadership to grant him access to his belongings at the Speaker’s lodge and guest house. This was granted by the President,” the source added.


Sources told SaharaReporters that Obasa is expected to visit the lodge and guest house today (Saturday), after returning to Lagos.

“But his visit will be under strict supervision to ensure no public property is looted by the former Speaker.

“To save face, the Chairman of Agege local government, Ganiyu Egunjobi has embarked on mobilisation of Obasa’s supporters to receive him on arrival in Lagos and also attend a meeting convened by the former Speaker in GRA, Ikeja later today,” one of the sources said.

Obasa was impeached by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative house over alleged misconduct and sundry offences.

Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was immediately elected the new Speaker, becoming the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the South-West state.

Obasa, from Agege Constituency I, was first elected into the House in 2007. He has since been in the chamber since then. He emerged speaker in June 2015 before his removal in January 2025.

On Monday, January 13, 2025, Obasa was impeached for gross misconduct and abuse of office.

On May 14, 2020, SaharaReporters reported that in another misuse of public funds and abuse of office, then Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Obasa, received N53m from the state coffers to travel with his mistress to the United States of America.

The report said Obasa got the House to approve the fund to facilitate a trip to Georgia, United States, for the 2019 US-Nigeria Trade and Investment Global Summit, which he was billed to attend with some members of the Assembly and their staff.

The event was subsequently postponed but rather than return the fund to the state’s treasury, Obasa diverted the funds for personal use as he travelled to the US with his mistress.

In a document sighted by SaharaReporters dated October 15, 2019, Obasa had requested the Assembly to release the funds so he could attend the summit along with one of his staff.

The document partly read, “Given the above, kindly seek approval of the Rt. Hon. Speaker for release of the sum of N53,719,405 only to enable them to attend the programme.

“Hon. Speaker, please read from page 39 of file. You are respectfully invited to consider and approve the release of N53,719,405 to facilitate the attendance of the Hon. Speaker, Hon. members and one member of staff at the Y2019 US – Nigeria Trade and Investment Global Summit scheduled to take place in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, from 26th – 28th September 2019.”

It was gathered that though the meeting was rescheduled, Obasa travelled to the US with his mistress in place of his legislative staff.

An official of the Lagos Assembly, who spoke with SaharaReporters, said the Speaker was always in the habit of travelling with his mistress in place of his staff whenever he was leaving the country for official purpose.

“The Speaker and his mistress, who doubles as his protocol and external relations officer in the Assembly, only went to the US after collecting N53m for the US-Nigeria Trade and Investment Global Summit.

“No other staff or member of the Assembly travelled with the Speaker or attended the event,” the source said.

Another person close to the Speaker’s team also confirmed the lamentation and anger of some of the staff listed on this approval, who couldn’t embark on the trip or got a share of the money.

SaharaReporters had also exposed how Obasa fraudulently approved millions of naira for himself through the award of contracts to companies owned by him.

Other reports also revealed how he approved N17m monthly to maintain his personal residence and guest house.

Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, the suspended pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David Parish, has launched a new ministry in Lagos called The Family Fellowship.

In a video that went viral on Monday morning, Iluyomade was seen celebrating with members during their inaugural service held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The service, which took place on Sunday morning, was marked by joyous dancing and jubilation.

Announcing the new ministry on Instagram, Iluyomade invited the public to attend the fellowship.

He wrote, “The Family Fellowship invites you specially. Join us tomorrow at the Civic Centre for a special time in the Lord’s presence. Promises to be a great experience.”

Iluyomade, formerly the senior pastor of City of David Parish, was suspended by RCCG in 2024 after his wife, Pastor Siju, hosted an elaborate 60th birthday celebration shortly after the tragic death of Herbert Wigwe, a prominent church member and former CEO of Access Bank, along with his wife and son.

Many criticised the timing of the celebration, which took place just weeks after Wigwe’s passing in a helicopter crash in the United States, viewing it as insensitive.

Wigwe had been a significant supporter of the church before his untimely death.

Following the backlash, the RCCG Governing Council convened a panel to investigate the matter.

In June 2024, Iluyomade and his wife were suspended for three months and reassigned to worship at the church’s headquarters in Ebute Metta.

The couple’s suspension drew further attention after they were disinvited from the Wigwe family’s funeral.

Now, the Iluyomades have established their own ministry to continue their spiritual mission.
