Edo APC Chairman has defended the embarrassing fumbling of Gov Monday Okpebholo at the presentation of the 2025 Budget presentation at the Edo State House of Assembly.

The fierce APC Chairman directed those criticizing the inability of the Gov to pronounce the budget figure to go to hell and burn to ashes.

He insisted that the Governor couldn't pronounce the budget figure because He isn't a thief by Obaseki or Asue of the PDP.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, has defended Governor Monday Okpebholo after the governor faced public backlash for stumbling over budget figures during the presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

A video of the governor’s budget presentation which shows his repeated attempts to correctly state the budget’s total amount went viral on social media.

In the video, Okpebholo appeared flustered, saying, “The Edo State 2025 Appropriation Bill of 6 billion… 650… 605 billion… 76 thou… 76 million…

“Let me take it again. 506 billion… 605 billion… sorry… 776 billion… sorry, it’s confusing me.”

Reacting to the controversy, Tenebe dismissed the criticism as unfounded, arguing that the governor’s slip-up was a natural human error.

“Social media has been agog with our governor’s budget presentation about a mistake on 650 billion and the rest of it all. It’s a normal thing. Humans make such mistakes, and a lot of people make such mistakes,” he said in a video message shared by Edo Updates on social media on Wednesday.

Tenebe further claimed that the incident reflected Okpebholo’s integrity, contrasting him with past leaders in the state.

He said, “That is how to know original and innocent people. Monday is not a thief, so he’s not familiar with figures.”

The APC chairman dismissed the backlash, insisting that critics focus on the governor’s performance rather than his error during the presentation.

“He’s the governor of the state, he’s performing, and he will continue to perform. And anybody who does not like his face should go to hell and burn to ashes, period, and thank you,” Tenebe concluded.

The governor on Tuesday presented the proposed budget estimated at N605 billion, which reflected a 25 per cent increase from the 2024 budget.

The Appropriation Bill is titled “Budget of Renewed Hope for a Rising Edo.”

Heavily armed Nigerian policemen have taken control of the Lagos State Magodo Estate housing the chambers of Afe Babalola, legal luminary, over the anticipated protests by Nigerians to demand the freedom of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.

Farotimi, who was whisked away by the Nigerian police under the directive of Afe Babalola, was transported from Lagos to Ekiti State over accusations of cybercrime.

The protest, which has gained public attention, is supported by Nigerian human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, who previously announced that the demonstrations would occur across multiple locations on Tuesday, including Lagos, Ekiti, Abuja, and London, the United Kingdom.

The protests are focused on demanding the immediate release of Farotimi, who remains remanded in custody after facing a stringent N50million fine at the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti.

SaharaReporters learnt that heavily armed police operatives are stationed at the Afe Babalola's law firm in Lagos, in response to the #FreeDeleFarotimiNow protest.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Monday granted N50million bail to human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, after the police filed charges against him over allegations of cybercrime.

Justice Babs O. Kuewumi, presiding over the court on Monday, December 9, 2024, ruled that Farotimi be released on bail with conditions that included a N50million surety and a guarantor possessing a landed property of equivalent value.

The case, with suit number FHC/AD/CR/104/2024, was filed by the Inspector-General of Police, alleging cybercrime activities linked to Farotimi.

However, Justice Kuewumi adjourned the case to January 29, 2025, for further proceedings.

SaharaReporters had last Friday reported that the Nigerian police filed fresh charges against Farotimi, before the Federal High Court In Ado-Ekiti, over allegations of cybercrime.

The state police command had made the filing in a plot to frustrate the human rights lawyer's bail application and keep him in remand.

Also speaking on the Monday's court sitting, human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, said, "The first hurdle was crossed. @DeleFarotimi was granted bail of N50 million naira surety in the like sum with someone with landed property. The Case was Adjourned to 29 January 2025. #FreeDeleFarotimiNow".
Farotimi, known for his advocacy for justice and good governance, had appeared before the court on Wednesday following charges brought against him by Age Babalola SAN under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015.

The police filed 12 fresh counts charges against Farotimi, according to court documents seen by SaharaReporters.

A chieftain of the Labour Party, Dele Farotimi has been arrested by Nigerian Police Force Officers on suspicion of disparaging Tony Elumelu, the CEO of the United Bank for Africa.

In a post on his X handle on Tuesday, Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress's 2023 presidential candidate, disclosed Farotimi's arrest.
Elumelu filed a petition accusing Farotimi of defamation, Sowore revealed.

He demanded the lawyer's immediate release, stressing that private conflicts shouldn't be resolved by the police.

“I just learned that Dele Farotimi was arrested by the Nigerian Police over a petition by Tony Elumelu of UBA Group alleging Dele defamed him.

“It is pertinent that the Nigerian police are notified that the institution cannot continue to be used to settle personal scores, and we, the citizens of Nigeria, would no longer tolerate such a situation.

“Therefore, the police at Zone 2 in Lagos are advised to release Barrister Dele Farotimi immediately,” Sowore wrote.

Didactic Information Hut recalls that the Human Rights Lawyer had recently raised the alarm over an alleged threat to his life.

In a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Tuesday, Farotimi explained how he got information on November 11 that an invitation letter from the Zone 2, Police Command, was delivered to his office.

Farotimi narrating his ordeal thus far said, “Despite finding the petition baseless, I addressed its content”.

“Subsequently, I met with the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP and the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Zone 2. After discussions, I was released on bail on self-recognisance and asked to return to the station on Thursday, the 21st of November 2024.

“Following this, I informed my friend, Pastor Sam Aiyedogbon of Realm of Glory International Churches, about the incident.

“On Saturday, the 16th of November 2024, Pastor Sam informed me that one of the pastors in his church, John Ntekume, had been abducted by the police, interrogated, and then returned to the church.

“He was coerced to write a statement along with another pastor, Obiorah Ochokwu.

“The police showed them a petition written by Chief Afe Babalola in Ekiti State, addressed to the Ekiti State Police Command, and demanded that they lure me to the church to facilitate my arrest.

“The pastors informed the police that they had no means of doing so, as I am not a hidden person and do not have a direct relationship with them.

“They explained that I had preached at their church as a guest of their senior pastor and left. From their accounts, it became evident that the officers were from the Ekiti State Police Command.

“I found it perplexing that the police would attempt to lure me through such means, especially since I had already reported to Zone 2 on the 13th of November 2024 and was scheduled to return on the 21st of November 2024.”

The Akwa Ibom State Government has declared Friday, November 29, 2024, as a public holiday for the burial of the First Lady, Mrs Patience Eno.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Enobong Uwah, in Uyo, the state capital, on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the decision is to enable Akwa Ibomites and other well-wishers to pay their last respects to the departed First Lady.

Her burial will take place at the governor’s home town, Ikot Ekpene Udo, in the Nsik-Ibium Local Government Area of the state on November 29, 2024.

The statement read, “Further to the final home-going programme of our departed First Lady, Her Excellency, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Umo Eno, the Akwa Ibom State Government, in consultation with the bereaved family, has declared Friday, November 29, 2024, a work-free day in honour of our dear mother.

“This is to enable Akwa-Ibomites to pay their last respect to our mother at her obsequies in Ikot Ekpene Udo, Nsik Ubuim Local Government Area of the state on that day.

May the gentle soul of our departed First Lady find repose in the bosom of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”

Dignitaries from far and near are expected to grace the state burial.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Wednesday presented a certificate of return to the winner of the Ondo State governorship election, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami.

The ceremony took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja and was attended by the national chairman of the APC and other prominent members of the party from the state.
