Leaders of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) have arrived at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in Abuja for last-minute negotiations over the new minimum wage. The labour leaders, who are seeking an upward review of the current minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000, had earlier threatened to commence a nationwide strike on Tuesday November 6 if the government fails to meet their demands today. Apart from Ayuba Wabba, President of NLC, some representatives of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), as well as the Chairman of the National Income and Wages Commission are also attending the meeting on the labour side. Atiku Bagudu, Governor of Kebbi State, and Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, were at the meeting as well. A group of online opinion pollsters, Truly Independent Diaspora Electoral Officers (TIDEO), has sensationally revealed that eight presidential aspirants will come tops in the February 2019 poll. In its statement dated November 1, 2018, which was obtained by THISDAY, TIDEO came short of declaring who will actually win the presidential election. Of the 61 political parties and their respective candidates it thrust out in its opinion poll, only eight contenders could win and become the next president, according to the group. They include President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC); former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Omoyele Sowore of Africa Action Congress (AAC), Fela Durotoye of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) and Kingsley Moghalu of the Young Progressive Party (YPP). https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2018/11/05/2019-opinion-poll-reveals-eight-leading-presidential-candidates/2019/?fbclid=IwAR3KN21fqgXZ1mHVrGPRszhzg0S5oZKGui-67woofLxGWiGWkP8Xd301Du0 |
The trial of Ayodele Fayose, Governor of Ekiti State, at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos State, has been adjourned till Wednesday. On Monday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Fayose on an 11-count charge bordering corruption and abuse of office to the tune of N30.8 billion. When the charges were read to him, the former Governor pleaded not guilty. His counsel, Kanu Agabi, filed a bail application on his behalf of his client but the presiding judge, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, rejected the application, ruling that Fayose should remain in EFCC custody till Wednesday. http://saharareporters.com/2018/10/22/breaking-fayose-remain-detention-court-adjourns-trial |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Appeal Court to reconstitute the Osun State governorship election petition tribunal. The party's position was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary,. PDP warned that any further delay would jeopardise the course of justice in the matter, noting that disbanding the panel, if not quickly addressed, would send a wrong signal regarding the integrity of the judiciary. Earlier on Thursday, members of PDP in the state had stormed the premises of the state high court to protest the disbandment of the three-man election petition tribunal, on the premise that no reason was given for the disbandment. The panel was set up to adjudicate complaints arising from the conduct of the September 22 governorship election. The statement read in part: “We invite Nigerians to note that in our lawful effort to reclaim our stolen mandate, PDP duly filed its petition on Tuesday, October 15, 2018, in accordance with Section 285 (6) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which prescribed that judgment must be delivered on or before 180 days. “While the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was served, the APC and its candidate [allegedly] evaded service. “Consequently, the PDP on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, applied for substituted service, which was slated for hearing today, Thursday, October 18, 2018, only to be informed that the panel has been disbanded on Wednesday without any reason and without providing a new panel to hear our matter. “Election petition matters are sui generis, with specific timeframe allotted to various stages up to the final determination. “The failure to set up a new panel to timeously hear our application for substituted service on APC and its candidate smacks of a shenanigan to deny our party full justice in the matter.”

In apparent fear of exposing the corruption and rots in the present administration, President Muhamadu Buhari on Thursday ordered the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) to stop the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, from speaking in an arranged and agreed radio interview. Sowore was billed to have a one-hour interview with the radio, but a few minutes to the talk show, it was announced that there was order from “above” for the interview to be stood down. The African Action Congress (AAC) candidate took to social media to express his disappointment of the last-minute cancellation. He tweeted: “FLASH: Bigwigs at Radio Nigeria Radio Nigeria (FRCN) @frcnnews @radionigeria today canceled my 4pm interview at the Radio station in Abuja after they belatedly found out I was the one and that standing “orders from above” forbids having me on live radio. We will #takeitback through #sowore2019." http://saharareporters.com/2018/10/18/fg-bars-frcn-holding-scheduled-interview-sowore |
Abdogood:Majority of people do not know what you just wrote here. things are getting worse and they believe ATIKU or BUHARI is their savior. we will continue to suffer if we keep on voting these guys. Nigeria need a total revolution. in 2015, people think Buhari is the savior of Nigeria not knowing that he will even be worse. Nigerians took their time and sacrificed the entire life to make sure the election wasn't rigged. but here we are again. |
vineyardfarms:That is the best thing right now. We need revolution in this country and that will be the best thing for us and the children yet unborn. The truth is both ATIKU and BUHARI will not propel this country to greatness. |
A couple, Richard and Chidimma Benson, has been detained by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit for allegedly selling their one-week old baby boy for N200,000 to rent an apartment in the city. The couple, who hail from Isiala-Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, confessed to the crime, saying it was hard times that forced them into the decision. Narrating her part in the deal, the wife said: “I have given birth to four children, one is late. I have two now. So when I became pregnant I told my husband that we would sell the baby and use the money to relocate from my village to township to start a better life. He refused but I forced him into agreeing with my plan. “My husband is a labourer, he is a wheelbarrow pusher. I owe debts everywhere and I needed to settle them. So, we sold the baby for N200,000 but I later learnt the baby was sold for N500,000.”Her husband, Richard said: “We were owing N10,000 and the hardship was too much for us to bear. I went round seeking for help but no help came. We wanted to relocate to the township for a chance of a better life, that was why we sold the baby to enable us raise money and rent an apartment in the city.” Parading the suspects alongside other seven child traffickers yesterday at the IGP complex in Aluu, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the IGP Monitoring Team, DCP Benneth Igwe, disclosed that the team rescued six pregnant women and arrested seven child traffickers in connection with the business. He said: “Based on reliable intelligence about a notorious child trafficking cartel operating in Obigbo-Afam in Oyigbo Local Government Area and Omagwa, Aluu, the operatives burst into Afrique Hotel in Oyigbo and rescued six pregnant women awaiting delivery. “The hotel is used as a harbinger by suspected child traffickers. Information further revealed that on October 7, the victims, one Richard Benson and his wife, Chidinma Benson, delivered a baby boy at Grace Land Maternity Homes, Afam Obigbo. “The maternity is owned by a quack nurse called Grace Daniel. After delivery, the parents were paid N200,000 by one Mrs. Rose Onyia and the baby was later sold to Mrs. Eucharia Jaja of Omagwa for N500,000 and thereafter, the baby was resold by Mrs. Jaja to her potential client in Lagos. Operatives are on a trail to recover the baby. “The cartel pay N150,000 for a girlchild and N200,000 for a boy to the mother. The baby is later trafficked to an unknown destination for amounts between N1 million and N1.5 million,” he said. Meanwhile, another couple, Eucharia Ihunna, aged 48 and her husband confessed that they have been in the business for four years and have sold over four babies. http://saharareporters.com/2018/10/18/couple-sells-baby-n200000-relocate-city

Achinike William-Wobodo Esq., a lawyer in Rivers State, has sued Governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, for allegedly forging his Age Certificate in documents he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). William Wobodo instituted the law suit against Wike and INEC at the Federal High Court (Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1020/2018), pursuant to Section 182(1)(j) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). In the suit, he asked the court to disqualify Wike from participating in the 2019 Rivers State governorship election. The complaint of the Applicant was that in 1999/2000, when Wike intended to contest for the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area Council (LGA) chairmanship election, he was less than 35 years, which was the minimum age qualification at the time for contesting the LGA Chairmanship. In order to qualify himself for that election, Wike allegedly got someone who deposed to an Affidavit that he was born on March 13, 1963, which made him eligible for that election. In the said affidavit, allegedly made in 1986, there was copious reference to Obio/Akpor LGA, which was not in existence as of 1986. The LGA was only created in 1989. Curiously, the affidavit, titled ‘Statutory Declaration of Age’, was also allegedly deposed to at the High/Chief Magistrate Court, yet had a stamp, purportedly of the Probate Registry. There was no identification or stamp of the person who allegedly administered the Oath as Commissioner for Oath as required by Oaths Act 1963. The Applicant alleged that the Governor had reasons to have known that the age declaration, which he presented to INEC as his Age Certificate, was forged — because even his date of birth earlier submitted in his documentation with INEC was December 13, 1967. The applicant also claimed to have known the Governor from 1991, when they were both of the same Faculty of Law at Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Port Harcourt, and that the Governor had always presented his date of birth as 13/12/1967. This, he said, made the Governor 50 years of age in 2017, and this was consistent with the Governor’s 50th birthday celebrations last year in Port Harcourt. By Wike's age declaration to INEC, he would have been 54 rather than the 50 he celebrated in 2017. It was alleged that in the buildup to the 2015 governorship election in Rivers State, some social media platforms published that the Governor had an unresolved conflict around his age and threatened to publish same. It was in a bid to maintain consistency in his age that Wike re-presented the allegedly forged Certificate of Age to INEC, which has now put him into a stronger dilemma. The applicant gave particulars of alleged forgery, which include: (1) that the document lied against/about itself; (2) that the content was made of manifest inconsistent, inexplicable and irreconcilable falsehood; (3) that the information regarding the age of the Governor is false, and to the knowledge of the Governor; (4) that the Governor intended that INEC should act on the document as genuine; (5) that INEC acted on the document as genuine; (6) and that the Constitution of Nigeria talks about presentation of forged certificate, it will be immaterial that the Governor claims he did not forge the document by himself. A very close source to Wike, who asked not to be named, revealed that the Governor and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were doing everything to suppress and frustrate the case. The source claimed that Wike admits that the case is a very bad one and that the timing has made the situation even worse. Our source also revealed that the Governor had hoped that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) would not have been able to decipher a cause of action from the certificate saga. He expressed shock that Wobodo was able to weave a very strong case out of the situation. Wike and his team have resolved that their strategy would be to frustrate the case; right now, he has directed his personal staff not to receive service of any court processes. SaharaReporters called Wike on his mobile phone to get his reaction, but he neither answered nor returned the calls. The applicant was also contacted, but he simply said it was not time to speak on the matter. “Please, this is not the time for me to speak about this matter,” he said. “My priority now is to serve the Governor and to have him appear in Court to respond to the issues. We can speak afterwards.” http://saharareporters.com/2018/10/17/exclusive-wike-hit-‘certificate-forgery’-scandal-ahead-2019-governorship-election

The presidential candidate says Nigeria has no future under the people who destroyed the nation's past. Omoyele Sowore is one of the new breed of politicians hoping to become president in 2019 (Premium Times) Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has taken a stab at former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, for his public endorsement of his former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who's also contesting in the 2019 presidential election. Atiku was elected the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) at the party's national convention in Port Harcourt on October 7, 2018, and was publicly endorsed days later by Obasanjo who had previously been one of the most vocal opponents of his long-standing presidential ambition. According to Sowore, who's contesting for the position of president on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC), Obasanjo's sensational u-turn over Atiku's suitability for the presidency proves that he's dishonest and unpatriotic. He said this while addressing the public at a summit, "African Leadership In The Millenium", a part of Felabration 2018, in Lagos State on Monday, October 15, 2018. Sowore narrated to the public how Atiku had failed to gain the endorsement of Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, and how he had to run to Obasanjo afterwards. He said, "They (Atiku and his campaign team) had to leave Soyinka with their tails in-between their legs. "Of course, the moment they saw that Soyinka could not be fooled, they went to that man in Ota who's always speaking from both sides of his mouth - a dishonest, unpatriotic, inhuman Obasanjo. "The usual unpatriotic, inhuman and wicked Obasanjo invited Atiku to his house and told us that he has now forgiven Atiku. The same Atiku he claimed that God will not pardon him if he ever recommended him to be president of Nigeria. "He recommended him again to go and destroy Nigeria. If it is true that there's God and God doesn't punish Obasanjo this time, so many of us will stop going to church." Buhari is a useless man - Sowore Sowore further took a stab at one of his biggest opponents at next year's polls, President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that history has been kind to the people that destroyed Nigeria. He said Nigeria has no future if any of 75-year-old Buhari or 72-year-old Atiku is allowed to emerge victorious in the 2019 presidential election. He said, "Sometimes, we don't celebrate our own. We don't celebrate the contributions that we've made at different times in this country. And that's why I think they don't teach history anymore. Because if we had history in our curriculum, somebody would have taught our children that Obasanjo is a bad person, that Babangida is a thief, that Atiku was a Customs officer who made it by stealing, that Buhari is a useless man. We didn't need Donald Trump to tell us Buhari is lifeless. "But here we are in 2018, there is a debate about who to choose between the worst and the baddest. And we're all here still romanticising about what Nigeria should be in the future. "Let me tell you, Nigeria has no future with these guys. It's the truth. We have no future because people who destroyed your past cannot guarantee you any future." We need revolution in 2019 - Sowore Sowore said Nigerians cannot hope to simply have power voluntarily transferred from one generation to another and must fight for it through a deliberate revolution. He pointed out that the system is rigged to keep the old establishment in power and that Nigerians must resist it so as to actualise the country of their dreams and not the one of their ineffective leaders. He said, "The country you're seeing today is the country of their dreams. The country without roads, hospitals and schools. It's the country of the dreams of the Babangidas, the Obasanjos, the Abubakars and the Buharis of this world. "The solution is a revolution. We're not going anywhere without adding the revolutionary fervour to this coming election. "Anyone who's still under the illusion that these old baggers, as we call them, will hand over power voluntarily to us, we're deceiving ourselves. "Anyone under the illusion that the plastic cards that we refer to as permanent voter's card (PVC) will guarantee you a transfers of power from one generation to another, you're wasting your time. "Of course a few of you might vote, but your votes will not count because it's been designed to fail from the beginning." The 2019 presidential election, scheduled for February 16, 2019, is expected to be keenly-contested between Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku who served as vice president between 1999 and 2007 and lost in the 2007 presidential election. https://www.pulse.ng/news/politics/sowore-obasanjo-is-dishonest-buhari-is-a-useless-man-id8981120.html

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has rejected the outcome of the rerun election, held on Thursday, September 27, 2018. A statement by Soji Adagunodo, Osun PDP Chairman, obtained by SaharaReporters, noted that the poll was marred with malpractices. Adagunodo described the exercise as "broad daylight robbery and a brazen assault" on the state and country's democracy. He accused the APC of conniving with security agents at the polling units to "manipulate" the rerun election process. The PDP chairman pointed out that scores of PDP supporters were also disallowed entry and chased away from the polling units by hired thugs, just as he noted that thousands of eligible voters were chased away from their homes in Orolu, Ife North and Ife South Local Governments in the early hours of Thursday. http://saharareporters.com/2018/09/28/well-use-legal-means-resist-concocted-election-result-says-osun-pdp The statement read: “Scores of our supporters in those local governments were shot and matcheted on their way to polling centres and in the full glare of security men. Hundreds of people holding PVCs from other polling units were accredited and allowed to vote in Osogbo and Ife South Local Governments. "The PDP agent in Olode was axed and abducted at about 7am [on Thursday]. Media men and election observers were denied access in several polling units. By the time access was granted to journalists at about 11am, ballot boxes had been stuffed by APC agents acting in connivance with INEC officials." He called on the electoral body to cancel the fresh results of the rerun poll, noting that the outcome was a "sham". The statement continued: “We reject any returns of results from this sham and call on the INEC authorities in Abuja to direct that the so-called supplementary election result collation be put on hold now. “We equally invite leaders of thought in Nigeria and the international community to rise up now to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from being ruined. “We also call on all members and supporters of our party to resist any attempt to foist concocted election results on the people of Osun, using all legal means at their disposal."

Former Head of State, Abdulsalam Abubakar and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, are currently meeting with Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ahead of the rerun election in Osun State scheduled for Thursday. The meeting is holding behind closed doors at Enugu Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. Details of the meeting are still sketchy as at the time of this report. On Sunday, INEC had declared the election inconclusive. In recent years, Abdulsalam has earned a reputation for stepping in when results of elections tend to portend negative consequences for peace and stability in the country. In 2015, the Peace Committee he headed prevailed on former President Goodluck Jonathan to concede defeat in the presidential election before the official announcement of the result by INEC. Details shortly... http://saharareporters.com/2018/09/25/breaking-abdusalam-peace-committee-closed-door-meeting-inec-chairman-over-osun-election

Omoyele Sowore, presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC), has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to a debate to be held whereever the incumbent wishes to have it. Sowore said this while addressing AAC party members at the first state congress held at the party secretariat on Saturday, September 22, 2018 in Akure, the Ondo State capital. According to Sowore, who is the publisher and founder of SaharaReporters, Buhari would not be willing to concede to a presidential debate because “he doesn’t have anything to say to the good people of Nigeria”. He said: “Buhari will not be able to address Nigerians because he can’t take questions from people based on his record. What will he answer? “We are asking for three debates: one on television and radio; another on university campuses and for the third, they are free to choose anywhere they feel like. We will go there even if it is on his hospital bed in London. “They know that the moment we have the debate, the election will be over, because he won’t be able to answer any of his questions. “Someone who cannot manage the petroleum sector comfortably is now given a country. How do you expect him to manage Nigeria? Money will disappoint them in this coming election. Nigerians must swing from these old people that have destroyed the country, to young people who have the ability of making it better. We want a working country; that is what we have been hearing from nooks and crannies. “Our job is to help them retire to their respective homes and we will do it in a peaceful way. We need a new country and we don’t want the past to follow us to the future. They have dragged us to the past to the extent that we don’t even have a future; that is why we have our TakeItBack movement.” He lamented the level of poverty in the country, saying: “So many of us were born into this poverty and misery, and we have not experienced anything good in Nigeria. People are dying on sick beds for not having N20,000 to pay at the hospital. This time is for you to experience a great Nigeria and we promise that we will deliver this all by ourselves for ourselves. We will have a brand new country that we will call our own; a country that we can be proud of. “This should be the new definition of democracy; that the country has resources working for our people and not the other way round where you are given the other end of the stick. Your senators are taking home N13.7 million every month and, probably by the time they resume, it would have been almost doubled, while teachers are taking home N18,000 per month, which is not enough to buy recharge cards for members of the House of Representatives. That is the country we are living in.” He also spoke on the state of development in different sectors of the country. “Nigeria, one of the worst countries with bad roads, has left her citizens’ vehicles in a dreadful and damaging state," he said. "They feel trapped with nowhere to turn. This has brought frustration and a feeling of resentful anger. The potholes on major highways have cost lives, which had also brought sorrow, wretchedness, distress and has even resulted in families being unable to feed.” He also highlighted the ways his movement and party have encouraged Nigerians to agitate for meaningful development. He said: “We have now forced Nigerians to discuss a living wage. We have also forced them to inform the government to fix bad roads that are killing Nigerians each day. We have forced Nigerians to discuss diversification of the economy, to debate hard topics like whether we should export marijuana, of which I heard Ondo is its biggest grower; the economy alone can bring about $4 billion, because Coca-Cola is working on infusing it into their drinks.” He commended the AAC members for embracing the movement, telling them: “You should congratulate yourselves that you are part of this journey. We have created our party, a party that is taking Nigeria to where her destination should be, and mind you not only Nigeria but Africa as a whole." http://saharareporters.com/2018/09/24/sowore-challenges-buhari-presidential-debate-anywhere-he-feels

Presidential aspirant and leader of the TakeIt Back movement, Omoyele Sowore, has said that the continent of Africa is about to witness a revolution that will bring the old guards to retirement and the continent to its new dawn. He made this known when he was received by hundreds of supporters at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, on arrival from his tour of some states in the United States of America to canvass the support of Nigerians living in the Diaspora. "The same way it is happening in Nigeria today, continentally it’s also happening in Uganda. A young Ugandan, Bobi Wine, has arrived Uganda to kick out Yoweri Musevini; I am also arriving Nigeria to kick out Muhammadu Buhari and to retire all the old guards who have made it impossible for this country to witness progress. “We are standing today behind a monument of decay. We are still managing one of the worst airports on the continent of Africa. Without a new mindset, without new leaders in this country who can truly drive Nigeria into progress, we are deceiving ourselves and we cannot continue to allow those who use the excuse that Rome was not built in a day. It is true that Rome was not built in a day but Rome was also not built forever”. He bemoaned Nigeria’s perpetual stagnation, saying that Nigerians can no longer afford to go hungry or without education and that it is time to “take it back”. Sowore was greeted with pomp and fanfare by supporters as well as spectators who came to catch a glimpse at the international arrival wing of the airport. http://saharareporters.com/2018/09/20/africa-about-experience-revolution-says-sowore-return-nigeria-us

Augustine Wokocha, Former Commissioner for Power in Rivers State, has faulted the position of the Rivers State Government, accusing Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of the state of diverting the funds from the sale of the state’s gas station turbines stations to finance the political activities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2015 elections. Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Emma Okah, had alleged that the proceeds of the sale of the power stations were diverted to fund APC’s political activities. Denying the claims of diversion of funds, Wokocha noted that the sale of the stations was part of efforts to improve revenue and ensure efficiency. Speaking to SaharaReporters, he said: “This is completely untrue. The money from the gas turbines was budgeted for the appropriation bills of the state for the period which the transactions occur. This even formed part of revenue for the government. The record of the state through the budget within the period of that transaction shows that for most of infrastructure done by the government, the projects were financed by the sales. “We applied all the money to the development of the Read more at: http://saharareporters.com/2018/09/20/rivers-gas-turbine-power-stations-sold-302m-not-308m-says-former-commissioner

Members of the Nigeria Airways branch of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners on Tuesday prevented the Acting Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, from gaining entry into her office during a peaceful protest to demand the non-payment of their 14 years' pension arears. The Minister was forced to alight from her official vehicle when they refused to vacate the gate, to appeal to the protesting senior citizens. During the protest, the pensioners displayed placards and took over the main gate of the ministry, obstructing human and vehicular movement, particularly the staff who were resuming for duty. Addressing the protesters, Ahmed asked for time to enable her get appropriate briefing on the issue, and also requested a proper meeting with the leadership of the group so as to agree on a payment schedule that will be mutually convenient. She stated that the 14-year arears of payment would have accumulated into a huge sum, and might not be easy to liquidate in one payment, hence a mutually agreed mode would be necessary. The protesters therefore presented a copy of their protest letter to the Minister and vacated the gate to allow her access into the premises. They demanded the payment of their areas totalling N45.3 billion, which they said had been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari since 2017. The protesters also asked the Minister to maintain open and continuous contact with the leadership of the union for development and information regarding their pension. http://saharareporters.com/2018/09/19/day-2-work-finance-minister-protesters-block-zainab-ahmed-entering-her-office
