Argentina's friendly with Portugal at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening represents the latest chapter in a rivalry to be cherished. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will line-up against each other on English soil for the first time in over six years.

That previous meeting came in the Champions League semi-final that saw Ronaldo’s Manchester United edge past Messi’s Barcelona at the same ground they will face each other this week. In between then and now there have been a couple of Champions League wins each and the two men seem to have broken most of the records in the game.

Both have 29 hat-tricks to their name. Messi became the all-time joint top scorer in the Champions League last month. Ronaldo became the all-time European Championship top scorer last week.

Messi was on target himself last time out too, netting the winner from the penalty spot against Croatia at Upton Park on Wednesday. In their only previous international meeting both men scored – naturally – although it was the brilliant Argentine who got the winner.

That’s been a familiar story over the years. Messi has 12 wins to Ronaldo’s seven with eight drawn games. However, it is the Real Madrid man in the ascendancy right now having won the Ballon d’Or in January and Champions League in May. Real Madrid are even top of La Liga.

Is this a rivalry that’s evolving as both men change their game? Or has the narrative we’ve projected on the two men always been more nuanced than some would suggest? With the help of Spanish football experts Sid Lowe and Guillem Balague, we explore the Messi-Ronaldo dynamic…

Sid Lowe on perception and reality

"Messi and Ronaldo have really helped to make the narrative that surrounds it crystal clear because it almost is Messi versus Ronaldo. Certainly from a Barcelona point of view, they will tell you that he is home-grown and he's humble but he's brilliant and he wins everything. But he just wins everything because he's brilliant.

"They will then tell you to look at the guy from Real Madrid - they had to spend millions on him and he's arrogant, he's all about himself and he's still not winning everything. That's the Barcelona perspective. The Madrid perspective will say that, yes, they do represent the rivalry because, as usual, the Madrid guy will be presented as the arrogant one. He's the victim of a media that wants to see things in terms of good and bad when it's never that simple.

"I think we've seen the rivalry crystallised in two players and that makes the narrative very powerful and quite seductive as well. Add to that the other thing, that in footballing terms they represent a very different approach. Messi is all about touch, technique and creating space. Ronaldo also has that but is about ambition and drive.

"I think those two players have helped to create something that is seen as almost eternal when, of course, it is not eternal. Once upon a time it was Real Madrid developing their youth players and Barcelona spending millions on players. Barcelona playing the passing football and Real Madrid playing the direct attacking football isn't always true as well. But we have this idea about their identity."

Guillem Balague on their changing games

"It’s now clear that Lionel Messi has changed the way he plays the game. He still has the freedom to play wherever he wants, but he has benefited from a greater intensity in training at Barcelona and also from the team being more organised.

"Under Luis Enrique, Barcelona pressure higher up the pitch, they distribute the ball more quickly and there is a lot of movement off the ball. All of that is helping Messi’s decision-making. Previously, he was looking to play around the penalty area and to score goals, but he has now taken a few steps back and you’re more likely to see him in the number 10 position.

"It has taken a while to realise that a 27-year-old body is different to a 21-year-old body. This is an evolution that had been predicted by everybody around him, but he needed to see it and he needed to feel that’s what his body can give him.

"We are seeing the same situation with Cristiano Ronaldo. We will never again see the winger that we used to see flying down the flanks at Old Trafford or in his first few years at Real Madrid. He is now a player that plays up front with freedom.

"Sometimes he plays on the left wing and lately we have seen him on the right wing a lot, joining in with Gareth Bale. He also plays as a number nine next to Karim Benzema and you also see him dropping deep to play a part in the build-up.

"That’s an evolution from his usual way of playing. We started to see some of those changes last season, but it was partly down to physical problems. Now you can see he has accepted his physical limitations and he is going to change the way he plays."

Umaru Bayi was driving a commercial bus which departed from Jos in Plateau State Monday night, with a full set of passengers bound for Lagos. As they approached Lagos from Ibadan around 1 p.m. during their journey they were stopped by a policeman in a patrol van on the highway. The van was later identified by its plate number, C NPF 6843.

After stopping the bus, the unidentified policeman reportedly demanded a N50 bribe from the driver, but the driver said he only had N1,000 notes.

The driver had also asked his passengers to assist him with a N50 note to pay the bribe demanded, but none of the passengers had it.

Following the vain search, the driver had offered his N1,000 note to the policeman and asked for "change". But the policeman reacted with anger, asking "should I be looking for change for you?"

Witnesses said the argument was very brief and the policeman ordered the driver down from the bus. He then allegedly shot the driver in the pelvic area and fled.

Umaru is currently being operated upon at a hospital. His relatives report that he is in critical condition.

Abuja – The Federal Government will send a fresh request to the National Assembly for the renewal of the state of emergency in the three north eastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke told state House Correspondents after a meeting of the National Defence Council that the request would be sent to the National Assembly.
Those in attendance at the NDC meeting were the Chief of Defense Staff, Chiefs of Army, Air force and Navy, as well as, the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and the National Security Adviser.
This is the third time that the president would seek the extension of state of emergency in the three states after the initial declaration of state of emergency in those states.
Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke said, “after a review of the state of Emergency in the affected states, government decided that it would ask the National Assembly for extension of state of emergency in the affected states.”

Former Head of State, Chief Ernest Shonekan, has lauded the bold decision taken by President Goodluck Jonathan in approving the recommendations made by Nigerian Economic Summit Group, NESG, during its recent annual summit conference.
Shonekan who spoke at the commissioning of the newly built NESG Summit House in Lagos, said government’s proactive measures in acknowledging and implementing the recommendations is a sure way of building a better society and described government’s action as a step in the right direction towards repositioning the economy.
He described NESG a credible think tank group that has helped in developing the nation by monitoring government policies and coming up with realistic recommendations and at the same time worked in attracting government action towards such recommendations.
Some of the highlighted recommendations that have made progress came from previous summits on “Growing Agriculture as a Business to Diversify Nigeria’s economy” with Draft bill on “Growth Enhancement Scheme, bill for the National Policy, progress in the creation of commodity exchange driven by Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment and investments by the private and public sector in enhancing agricultural growth with funding support from the International Financial Institutions.

Ado-Ekiti : A Nigerian-born U.S. Army Captain, Sunday Adebomi, on Sunday said that war against Boko Haram could be won if President Goodluck Jonathan set aside his gentility.
Adebomi said in Ado-Ekiti that the war could be won if the Federal Government was determined to introduce a hard stand.
“There are several ways of wiping out the sect and end the killings. If government is determined to end Boko Haram today it will be achieved.
“Who are those in the sect that dare face the government? But unfortunately, I suspect there are some bigwigs behind these people.
“Mr President is being too gentle in his handling of the killings; but unfortunately, it is daily assuming dangerous dimension; gentility cannot win the war.
“Although gentility is not a crime but Mr President will have to be more aggressive because this is a security threat to the entire nation.
“Mr President will have to take a stand on the matter either to continue to tolerate the sect and leave Nigerians to be mourning every day with the several killings.
“Mr President should give a matching order to the military to wipe them off once and for all.
“Not until a strong stand is taken Nigerians may not be able to sleep with their eyes closed,” he said.
Adebomi said the military had been doing a good job in the affected states but “they are fighting unknown faces and faceless groups.
“Government will have to first identify the cause of the problem, the root, sponsors, as well as where and how these insurgents get their weapons.
“The security agencies do not also understand the terrain they are fighting the war because most of them are alien to the battle fields.
“They know nothing about the sect, how then will they fight such war and think they will win; it is difficult.”
The U.S. captain said he led over 5,000 U.S. soldiers to war during the Pre-Mobilisation in 2010 and expressed optimism that the sect could be wiped out.
He said that the sect meant nothing to the Nigeria security agencies if genuine commitment was there adding, “all they need is the Presidential directive.”
He appealed to President Jonathan to read the riot act to the governors of the affected states or be made to face the wrath of the Federal government.
Adebomi said that the President could also compel the governors in the states to account for each soul lost to the insurgents.
“What am simply saying is that the matter deserves an aggressive reaction; enough of a gentleman approach, because you don’t dialogue with faceless groups,” he said.
“The question we need to ask ourselves is: “When will enough be enough?
I woke up this morning with this thought in my mind asking Nigerians when enough will be enough.
“I ask the President when enough will be enough. I ask members of the Senate and House of Representatives when enough will be enough.
“Is it not time the government declared full state of emergency in the affected region?
“Since this insurgency, what concrete intelligence step has the government taken apart from fire for fire exposing ill equipped military men and women to excessive fire power of Boko Haram.
“Let us ask, when will enough be enough? Nigeria is dripping blood on daily basis; it is time the government woke up to its task.”
Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states have been under the attack of the Boko Haram insurgents, loosing several lives and property.
Adebomi hails from Ise-Ekiti in Ise/Orun local government area of Ekiti and had been in the U.S. Army for almost two decades. (NAN)

The French Foreign Ministry has warned against travel to Mali due to a second outbreak of Ebola in the former French colony.
The ministry said in a statement that since Oct. 24 several cases of Ebola had been confirmed in Bamako and in the western city of Kayes.
Kayes is close to the border with Senegal.
“French citizens should not travel to, or stay in, the Kayes region or in Bamako and citizens living there should follow guidance from the Mali authorities,’’ the ministry said.
According to health officials, Mali is trying to trace as many as 343 people linked to confirmed and probable Ebola victims in an effort to control its second Ebola outbreak.
Reports say France still has around 1,500 soldiers in its former colony following its military operation early 2013 to drive out Islamist militants.

After leading the Bafana Bafana to a 2015 Afcon ticket , Saturday, in Durban, Chief coach of South Africa national team, Shakes Mashaba has warned his Nigerian counterpart, Stephen Keshi not to expect any favours on November 19, when their teams clash in Uyo in the last Group A qualifying match of Afcon 2015.
Speaking ahead of the all important match, particularly for the Super Eagles, Mashaba said, “the last match is as important as was the match against Sudan. We are going to Nigeria to face the Super Eagles, it is going to be war because they want to win and we are aiming for maximum points.”

Mashaba who has had an excellent run with the Bafana Bafana since taking over from Gordon Igesund said his players will not rest on their oars as a win over Nigeria would mark a very important turn in their history. “They could not beat us in Cape Town and we were a bit timid in front of goal. This time, we have more confidence in ourselves and our position in the group shows how determined we want to succeed,” the coach said, adding, “ we will try to beat them in Uyo to prove to them(the Eagles) that this is our time.”


Mashaba’s strong statement cannot be dismissed as his team is riding high at the moment, having already secured their ticket for the 2015 Afcon which will be held at Equatorial Guinea. Bafana Bafana yesterday
