Oyo did not own ouidah or whydah (just spelling ) but had immense influence there as the dahomey were then under oyo RULE, oyo did not trade in LAGOS ports except little in badagry prior to the 19th century,it was Ibadan that traded in Lagos ports after the fall of oyo and the independence of Dahomey


Benin controlled the LAGOS port like the oyo did the ouidah port and they were not favourably disposed to trading with the Portuguese ( as they were not disposed to slave trading),the ijebu tried to use the LAGOS end of the port but the trade wasn't great,so the Portuguese and other European merchants largely ignored Lagos as it wasn't profitable until the time of British ascendancy in the area.

Calabar was the capital of Nigeria for the colonialist until 1906 when it was moved to Lagos island.

And Calabar was the first capital of the Eastern region before it was moved to Enugu then to Umuaiha.

Lagos has been a major trading city before the British came just like Ouidah in Dahomey. The Portuguese named it Lagos since the not even the British. While the Yorubas and Aworis called it Eko the Portuguese settlers called it Lagos (lake) back in the 15th century, the British only came in the 1860s.

Oyo does not own Ouidah, Oyo had great influence it and collect taxes just like the Benin had great influence on the eko port.

Lagos had been a business district for nearly 200 years before it was joined with Southern Nigeria.

Also, it’s not by the size of the state but by the pipulation … and small size don’t have much electoral votes… states like California has 55 electoral votes, small population states like Vermont have just 3.
