Mr. Femi is hardly around in Abuja He minds his business in Lagos. I laugh each time I read false reports about things he knew nothing about being ascribed to him. His father, my principal, is well brought up. Ditto, Her Excellency, the mother of the house. You can never find Femi and his siblings around corridors of power the way people of similar status would have been behaving. Smart, humble and respectful, Femi Oyetola is an example of an enterprising youngman desirous of charting a way for himself despite being born with a silver spoon. FM, as I fondly call you, I pray Almighty Allah continues to watch over you and ease your affairs for you. |

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has regretted that several things which the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari ought to have done to ease the sufferings of Nigerians at the present economic crunch could not be carried out because of massive stealing and the depletion of Nigeria’s foreign reserves. According to him, “I want to just quickly say that corruption as we all know is not just a social evil, it is an existential threat to our country. There is no doubt at all that unlike in other countries, people say there is corruption everywhere which is true, but I think there is one distinguishing feature for Nigeria and for many other country, it is that it is a threat that directly affects the lives and livelihood of everyone. “It is not just an evil, it is not just an immorality, it is existential because it could truly destroy lives and it has destroyed many lives and has continued to destroy the Nigerian economy. “And I think that the reasons are very obvious if you just take a clear example. All through the period when Nigeria was earning huge sums of money as proceeds from oil sales for almost five years, the external reserves of Nigeria remains much the same. “It did not increase at all despite the high earning, now we know also that we are investigating cases which showed that over $15 billion was lost in one type of contract alone. We are not talking of oil contract, we are talking of security-related contracts, $15 billion. We have not talked at all of oil contracts in several billions.

Bauchi State governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar has asked the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and related organizations in the country to support the presidency for taking “a bold step” to transform the economy and shun their plans to embark on strike over the removal of fuel subsidy. The governor pointed out that the government’s decision would save the nation nearly a trillion naira that was spent last year in the name of subsidy to provide the needed infrastructure. Abubakar made the appeal in the wake of an ultimatum issued by the labour leaders, asking the federal government to rescind its decision to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum which resulted in the increase of the price of the commodity to N145 a litre.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court has called on former National Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (rtd.), to open his case against the Federal Government. The court also ordered the Federal Government to be ready to open its defence to justify the detention of the former NSA. While Dasuki will open his case this Wednesday, the Federal Government will also argue its defence to the suit the next day. Presiding judge of the regional court, Justice Friday Chijioke Nwoke, gave the order in Abuja on Tuesday at the resumed hearing of the suit instituted by Dasuki challenging his alleged unlawful detention, unlawful seizure of properties and infringement of his fundamental right to liberty. Justice Nwoke, while ruling in a motion by the Federal Government seeking to lead oral evidence against Dasuki to justify his continued detention, said that having granted expeditious hearing in the case, the court could not do anything to defeat the accelerated hearing order. The judge granted the request of the Federal Government to call two witnesses who are security operatives to lead oral evidence against Dasuki but ordered that the defence by government must be done within one day. He subsequently ordered Dasuki to make out his case of the abuse of fundamental rights against government today (Wednesday May 18) while the Federal Government must put its defence at the disposal of the court on Thursday, May 19, 2016. |

The National Vice-Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hilliard Eta has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is making difficult decisions in order to build a solid foundation for Nigeria’s future. He made the comment while speaking in Abuja on Monday, May 16, 2016, Punch reports. “We all know how much this government has achieved in curbing insurgency in the North-East and even the international community has accepted the fact that this government has done so much in the area of dealing with Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East and in security of the nation in general,” he said. “In the area of corruption, except one is blind, government has been sincere not just by mouthing the war against corruption, but actually doing what is actually necessary to curb corruption. First, by living by example because the saying goes that when a fish is getting bad, it starts from the head. “So, living by example and making sure that whoever is caught to have dip his hands into the treasury are prosecuted. On the economy which is what everybody is complaining about today because of the hardship; we campaigned for change and not a miracle. For change to take place, there has to be a gestation period while miracle is instant because it is divine. “I know that Nigerians are impatient. Even if you want to build a beautiful edifice, you must first lay the foundation. This government has laid the foundation for the take-off of the economic boom that we must necessarily bring to Nigerians because that is what we promised,” he added.
