Even as foreign secretary, Dominc Raab, extends support to the US over the terrorist-style assassination of General Qassem Soleimani, there are credible reports of the UK adopting a military posture near Iranian territorial waters. According to The Sun newspaper, a Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarine, armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, is in striking position of Iran. The Sun quotes its defence sources as claiming that the higher echelons of the British military are eager to support the US militarily if the Americans decide to attack Iran. “If things unravel quickly, the UK will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the US. The hunter-killers are the most advanced submarines in the Royal Navy. They are a deadly asset and there is one well within range of Iran”, The Sun quoted one of its defence sources. According to the same source, the crew of the submarine just need to manoeuvre into a “firing pocket” in order to unleash their missiles, which carry a 1,000lb high-explosive warhead with a range of more than 1,550 miles. In addition, The Sun reports that operatives from the Special Air Service (SAS) and the Special Boat Service (SBS) – two core components of the UK Special Forces community – have been sent to Iraq to aid in “rescue missions”. The revelation about the dispatch of SAS and SBS operatives to Iraq contradicts earlier media reports that the British and American forces are withdrawing from the country. Despite its impeccable tabloid credentials, The Sun newspaper is viewed as credible on defence matters based on its usually strong sources. The UK’s preparation for potential military action against Iran contradicts Raab’s claim that the UK seeks “de-escalation” in the intensifying crisis. https://www.presstv.com/Detail/2020/01/05/615458/UK-Military-Submarine-Attack-Iran- |

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday directed the country’s military to prepare to evacuate thousands of Filipinos in Iran and Iraq if hostilities escalate in the Middle East. Duterte issued the directive during an emergency meeting with defence, military and police officials, said Arsenio Andolong, spokesman for the Department of National Defence. “The sole agenda was how to ensure the safety of our countrymen in the Middle East, especially those in Iraq and Iran as the tension between the United States and Iran rises,” Andolong said in a statement. “The president tasked the armed forces to prepare its air and naval assets to evacuate and bring home our countrymen if and when open hostilities erupt in the Middle East that may endanger their lives,” he added. There are currently 1,600 Filipinos in Iran and 6,000 in Iraq, Andolong said. The death of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in a U.S. drone strike has stoked fears of a new war in the Middle East, NAN reports. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed to revenge Soleimani’s killing, while President Donald Trump warned that the U.S. would target 52 sites in the Islamic Republic if Tehran retaliates. https://dailypost.ng/2020/01/05/us-vs-iran-philippines-president-takes-action-after-death-of-soleiman/ |

Two British warships are on their way to the Persian Gulf to “protect” ships and citizens, defense secretary has announced on Jan. 4. “I have instructed preparations for HMS Montrose and HMS Defender to return to accompanying duties” of British ships sailing in the region, said Ben Wallace in a statement. “The Government will take all necessary steps to protect our ships and citizens at this time.” The decision came after rising tensions in the region following the killing of top Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani in a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad on Jan. 4. “Yesterday I spoke to my US counterpart Secretary [Mark] Esper and we urge all parties to engage to de-escalate the situation,” said Wallace. “During the last few months US forces in Iraq, who are based in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government, have been repeatedly attacked by Iranian backed militia.” Wallace said: “General Soleimani has been at the heart of the use of proxies to undermine neighbouring sovereign nations and target Iran's enemies. “Under international law the United States is entitled to defend itself against those posing an imminent threat to their citizens.” Britain's Royal Navy escorted British-flagged vessels through the Straight of Hormuz in July following Iran's seizure a British-flagged ship. The seizure came in retaliation of the seizure of an Iranian-flagged tanker near Gibraltar, a British territory. HMS Montrose took part in last year's accompanying assignment. http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/uk-sends-two-warships-to-persian-gulf-150607 |

Iranian authorities have put a bounty on American President Donald Trump's head during the televised funeral of General Qasem Soleimani after he was assassinated last week An $80million bounty has been placed on Donald Trump's head in the wake of General Qasem Soleimani's assasination, according to reports. During the televised funeral of the top Iranian, official state broadcasters said one US dollar would be tabled for every Iranian in the country, with the cash going to whoever killed the US President. “Iran has 80 million inhabitants. Based on the Iranian population, we want to raise $80million (£61million) which is a reward for those who get close to the head of President Trump,” it was announced, according to en24. Soleimani, Iran's preeminent military commander, was killed on Friday in a US drone strike on his convoy at Baghdad airport. The attack took long-running hostilities between Washington and Tehran into uncharted territory and raised the spectre of wider conflict in the Middle East. Earlier today Iranian MP Abolfazl Aboutorabi threatened to attack the heart of American politics. Rampaging thugs leave five in hospital during two-hour 'violent robbery' spree “We can attack the White House itself, we can respond to them on the American soil, he said according to the Iranian Labour News Agency. "We have the power, and God willing we will respond in an appropriate time." He went on to say that “this is a declaration of war, which means if you hesitate you lose. “When someone declares war, do you want to respond to the bullets with flowers? They will shoot you in the head.” During an open session of parliament in Tehran this afternoon President Trump was called a "terrorist in a suit" after he threatened to hit 52 Iranian sites hard if Tehran attacks Americans or U.S. assets. Soleimani was the architect of Tehran's clandestine and military operations abroad as head of the Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised on Friday that Iran would seek harsh revenge for his death. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that if there were further Iranian attacks on U.S. targets, Washington would respond with lawful strikes against decision-makers orchestrating such attacks. Nancy Pelosi, House speaker, criticised the manner in which the decision was taken. She said: “This initiation of hostilities was taken without an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iran, without the consultation of the Congress and without the articulation of a clear and legitimate strategy to either the Congress or the public." https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/iran-offers-80million-bounty-donald-21219180 |
