CrimeMan Kills Father For Eating His Yam! by Sunofgod(op): 9:09pm On Jan 09, 2020
A Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Abakaliki, on Thursday, remanded in the prison custody, one Chibueze Iduma, for allegedly killing his father.

The suspect and his father, Mr Emmanuel Oba Iduma, whom he allegedly killed, had some altercations over cooked yam, when the incident happened.

The accused was said to have cooked a piece of yam, left same in the house to see a friend, in the area, only to return to find that the father had eaten the cooked yam.

A source said, “While they quarrelled over the cooked yam, the father had hit the son with his walking stick; and in retaliation, the son hit him back, he then fell down and died.”

It was further gathered that the accused person allegedly committed the offense at Amaefia Ngbo community, in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on December 20, 2019.

He was arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court on one count of murder, on Thursday.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Mbam, told the court that the offence was punishable under section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

The charge read, “That you Chibueze Iduma ‘m’, on the 20th day of December, 2019, at Amaefia Ngbo village, in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area, under the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did unlawfully cause the death of one Emmanuel Oba Iduma ‘m’, by hitting him with walking stick and thereby committed an offense punishable under section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 33, Vol. 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.”

The Chief Magistrate, Blessing Chukwu, said the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

She, therefore, directed that the accused person be remanded at the the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Abakaliki, while his case file should be transferred to the Diretor of Public Prosecutions in the state, for necessary advice.

The matter was adjourned till January 29, 2020, for report of compliance.

PoliticsWe Leverage Technology To Fight Corruption, Says Buhari by Sunofgod(op): 7:17pm On Jan 09, 2020
Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) Thursday in Abuja said his regime leverage technology to fight corruption and reduce leakages and inefficiencies in public service.

Buhari stated this when he received the leadership of the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria and the Nigeria Computer Society.

According to Buhari, technology in public service delivery is no longer a luxury, but a pressing necessity.

He said, ‘‘The future belongs to IT. What was unimaginable 20 years ago is a reality today. Accordingly, we have introduced numerous policies and have made substantial investments to ensure the benefits of this technology-driven age is felt by 200 million Nigerians.

‘‘Indeed, our strategy for inclusive economic growth can only be achieved by leveraging the technology tools available to us.

‘‘Already, we have seen the benefits of using technological tools for lending to farmers as well as monitoring crop performance especially in some of the more remote locations.

‘‘We also leveraged technology to fight corruption and reduce leakages and inefficiencies in public service delivery.

“You are all aware of the significant investments we made to upgrade our policy and military platforms as we battle insecurity in parts of the country.

‘‘Furthermore, our social investment programs are built on technological platforms that allow us to positively impact the lives of some of poorest members of our society,’’ he said.

The president, therefore, urged the computer bodies to continue to partner with the government at all levels.

The bodies commended the Buhari regime for the implementation of the Treasury Single Account, the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, among others.

PoliticsArmy Reacts To 'alleged' Collection Of N1000 At Checkpoints By Officers by Sunofgod(op): 9:27pm On Jan 07, 2020
The Nigerian Army Headquarters has promised to carry out a thorough investigation into the allegation of extortion of commuters by its personnel in Borno with a view to sanctioning them.

This followed an allegation by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno on Monday when he encountered an incident at a military checkpoint along Damaturu-Maiduguri road.

The governor was reported to have accused soldiers of Operation LAFIYA DOLE deployed along Maiduguri–Damaturu Road of extorting commuters by collecting N1000 from them and causing them unnecessary hardship.

The Nigerian Army Operations’ Media Coordinator, Col. Aminu Iliyasu, in a statement on Tuesday, said Nigerian army as a professional and disciplined institution viewed such allegations seriously, particularly coming from a governor.

According to him, it is on record that, whenever such allegations of troops’ misconduct were made in the past, the Nigerian Army never reneged in conducting thorough investigations to establish them.

“Where any infractions were established against any personnel, appropriate sanctions were applied in line with extant rules and regulations as provided for in the Armed Forces Act CAP A20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.

“Thus, the Nigerian Army wishes to assure the good people of Borno State and indeed the nation at large that any allegations of misconduct against its troops will be duly investigated and culprits will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

Iliyasu said army authorities had, however, observed that such public outbursts, particularly by a state governor, could be counterproductive.

He added that such outburst was capable of reversing the gains recorded so far in the ongoing fight against insurgents and other criminal elements across the nation.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to emphatically reiterate its steadfastness on the protection of lives, properties of all law-abiding citizens as it is committed to wiping out insurgency in the North East and other forms of criminality across the country.

“Additionally, citizens’ continuous support and cooperation are highly appreciated.

“Any observed misconduct by troops could be reported directly through a toll – free code 193 for immediate remedy,” he said.

CrimeRe: Travelex Being Held To Ransom By Hackers by Sunofgod(op): 9:21pm On Jan 07, 2020
2020...the year of the hacker!
CrimeTravelex Being Held To Ransom By Hackers by Sunofgod(op): 9:20pm On Jan 07, 2020
Hackers are holding foreign exchange company Travelex to ransom after a cyber-attack forced the firm to turn off all computer systems and resort to using pen and paper.

On New Year's Eve, hackers launched their attack on the Travelex network.

As a result, the company took down its websites across 30 countries to contain "the virus and protect data".

A ransomware gang called Sodinokibi has told the BBC it is behind the hack and wants Travelex to pay $6m (£4.6m).

The gang, also known as REvil, claims to have gained access to the company's computer network six months ago and to have downloaded 5GB of sensitive customer data.

Dates of birth, credit card information and national insurance numbers are all in their possession, they say.

The hackers said: "In the case of payment, we will delete and will not use that [data]base and restore them the entire network.

"The deadline for doubling the payment is two days. Then another seven days and the sale of the entire base."

Police probe
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said it had not received a data breach report from Travelex.

A spokeswoman added: "Organisations must notify the ICO within 72 hours of becoming aware of a personal data breach unless it does not pose a risk to people's rights and freedoms.

"If an organisation decides that a breach doesn't need to be reported, they should keep their own record of it and be able to explain why it wasn't reported if necessary."

Under General Data Protection Regulation, a company that fails to comply can face a maximum fine of 4% of its global turnover.

What is ransomware?
Cyber-attacks are targeting large companies and demanding huge payments
The Metropolitan Police is leading the investigation into the attack.

In a statement, the force said: "On Thursday, 2 January, the Met's Cyber Crime Team were contacted with regards to a reported ransomware attack involving a foreign currency exchange. Inquiries into the circumstances are ongoing."

Travelex says it is working with police and has deployed teams of IT specialists and external cyber-security experts who have been working continuously.

According to Fabian Wosar, a ransomware expert at cyber security company Emsisoft, the attack has all the hallmarks of the REvil gang.

"With what we know about the incident and the hackers' mode of operation in the past paints a consistent picture, which leads me to believe that REvil indeed hit Travelex," he said.

"The REvil/Sodinokibi group has been a quite sophisticated group for a long time now. The quoted ransom demands are consistent for the gang's victims of Travelex's size.

"Stealing data essentially gives threat actors additional bargaining chips when it comes to dealing with companies unwilling to pay the ransom. The idea is to weaponise the hefty fines associated with GDPR violations to pressure the company into paying."

The recovery operation is being co-ordinated from a Travelex office in the UK and the company insists that no customer data has been leaked.

But it would not say what data could potentially be at risk.

Travelex websites across Europe, Asia and the US have been offline since 31 December, with a message to visitors that they are down for "planned maintenance".

Visitors to the Travelex website are told that the site is down for "planned maintenance".
Customers have not been sent any email communication about the cyber-attack, but queries are being replied to on social media by the company.

"The public response from Travelex has been shockingly bad," said security researcher Kevin Beaumont.

"The Travelex UK website still only says 'planned maintenance', a week after the problems began - many customers will be completely unaware hackers gained access to their network, and allegedly their personal data," he said.

"Travelex have a responsibility to clearly communicate with customers and business partners the gravity of the situation."

Travelex's decision to take down its site has meant the large network of other firms that use its services cannot sell currency online.

The company has said it is keeping its partners up to date on the response to the cyber-attack.

Virgin Money's site showed an error message, which said: "Our online, foreign currency purchasing service is temporarily unavailable due to planned maintenance. The system will be back online shortly."

Sainsbury's Bank also said its online travel money services were unavailable, although it said customers could still buy travel money in its stores. In a statement to the BBC, the bank said: "We're in close contact with Travelex so that we can resume our online service as soon as possible."

Sainsbury's Bank's website said it was not able to take money orders online.
A spokesperson for First Direct, which is owned by HSBC, said: "Unfortunately, our online travel money service is currently unavailable due to a service issue with third party service provider, Travelex."

In a statement on Thursday, Travelex boss Tony D'Souza said: "We regret having to suspend some of our services in order to contain the virus and protect data."

The company has resorted to carrying out transactions manually, providing foreign-exchange services over the counter in its branches.

"We apologise to all our customers for any inconvenience caused as a result," Mr D'Souza said in the statement.

The company has since told the BBC that its systems are currently down and it is unable to sell or reload its pre-paid travel cards. But, it said: "Existing cards continue to function as normal and customers in the UK can continue to spend and withdraw money from ATMs."

"For customers who have ordered money online, please contact Travelex customer services by phone or via social media to discuss their individual situation and requirements."

Foreign AffairsIranian Presidential Adviser Releases List Of Trump Properties by Sunofgod(op): 9:45pm On Jan 06, 2020
An adviser to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has shared a list of properties owned by President Donald Trump’s real estate empire, including his much-frequented Mar-a-Lago resort.

Hesameddin Ashena on Saturday tweeted a link to an article in Forbes listing all of the properties Trump owns in New York, as well as his hotels and resorts in the U.S. and Great Britain, The Daily Mail reports.

Iran has expressed outrage and a desire for revenge following the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani by a U.S. airstrike last week. The country has since announced that it was backing out of the nuclear deal arranged by former President Barack Obama.

Rouhani tweeted a warning to Trump on Monday, after he threatened to target 52 Iranian cultural sites, a number that the president said refered to the 52 Americans held in the Iran hostage crisis.

“Those who refer to the number 52 should also remember the number 290. #IR655,” he tweeted Monday afternoon, in reference to the 290 people killed aboard Iran Air Flight 655, which the U.S. shot down in 1988.

Never threaten the Iranian nation,” he added

CrimeHow I Arrested Pastor, Others Who Wanted To Dupe Me Of $125m – Umahi by Sunofgod(op): 7:37pm On Jan 06, 2020
The Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi, has revealed how he ordered for the arrest of fake pastors who nearly duped him of over $125 million US dollars.

Umahi made this known while addressing stakeholders and the members of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Ebonyi State chapter during a homage at his country home at Uburu community, Ohaozara LGA, of Ebonyi State.

According to him “My mother thought me and my brothers how to honour men of God. Those who are men of God that are not real should be avoided. They are taking course upon themselves because their own judgement will be greater.

“Something played out today. Some group of people in the past two months said they have $125 million U.S dollars to give us. I told my Commissioner for Finance that it doesn’t sound real. I know immediately that it was a scam but my commissioner for finance continued pushing innocently.

“Because of his belief that it is real, I told him to go ahead. They made us to know that they are investors and that they have money to give to us for free of charge. They said we should bring $125 million US dollars. And out of the money, they will only take $25 million dollars to develop our place while the remaining $100million US dollars will be our own.

“I said what is my own. They can even take 50% if they want and give us even 1million dollars, since it is a grants. I told them that, if this money is a flush money, Ebonyi State Government will not be held responsible. The journey began. They said that we should show evidence of $10 million dollars in our account.

“I ask them why do you want us to have money in that account? I now directed UBA to credit 3.6 billion but we are not touching or making use of it. Just show evidence. And so, UBA did and sent to them. Now, in the last one week, we supposed to have the money credited to our account but the acclaimed investors failed. I laughed.

“They wrote to us three days ago that the money will not be released to us unless we sign a sovereign grantee. You know, sovereign grantee can only be signed by the President. They said in the alternative, we should bring a letter of credit. I said why should they demand for letter of credit when there is no exchange of goods?

“Then, I demanded to meet with these people. I now told my commissioner for finance to invite them to come. They demanded for tickets and logistics money. I told them to come, I’m a governor and I will pay for everything. They all came and I lodged them at the Osborne Hotel.

“I invited the Director of DSS, though I didn’t tell them but what shocked me was that most of them hailed from Igbo land. The link man is from Afikpo our own Ebonyi State. We began to talk. I asked them why do they need a letter of credit?

“Are we expecting goods from you? They said no. They stated going up and down. I asked them, why don’t you people give us chance, you think that Ebonyi State is a fool and that we are gullible.

“I gave them two options, as an Igbo man, I want us to resolve this matter as brothers. I asked them to confess that they want to scam us. On the alternative, I will take the matter up. This is because, if this is allowed, some one may die of heart attack.

“They are looking for our money but they will not get it because we are in a debit alert.

“It is God, that led them to come, so that I can stop the virus. And so, about five of them when we began to probe further, I discovered that their leader was a pastor in one popular church in Abuja. I seized their phones and other things. I directed DSS to arrest them and never to release them,” he stated.

PoliticsFG Denies Hiking Electricity Tariff…says Increase Subject To Public Consultation by Sunofgod(op): 7:30pm On Jan 06, 2020
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Monday, denied hiking electricity tariffs, stating that the review of the Multi-Year Tariff Order, MYTO, does not mean an immediate increase in tariff for electricity consumers. However, electricity distribution companies, under the aegis of Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, ANED, declared that they would begin implementation of the increase in tariff from April 1, 2020.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NERC, Professor James Momoh, also disclosed that from next month, the commission would begin the regulation of estimated billing by electricity distribution companies, DISCOs who fail to provide meters for their customers. Momoh stated that the review of the MYTO was the main mandate that NERC statutorily carries out every six months, adding that the latest review would only become effective after consultation with the public. He added that in the next three months the commission would engage the public on a consultation on the planned review in electricity tariff. He said, “The proposed tariff review is what we are mandated to do as a regulator. We did the first one around June. January is here, we have done it.

We have no option than to do our jobs. We have done the review and it is subject to public consultation. READ ALSO: Government’s hike in electricity tariff against interest of Nigerians ― PDP “In the next three months, we will engage you for consultations. We have given the report card of what we saw based on all indices for doing the review. We did not say it is binding tomorrow morning. We said we are going to the second thing: consultation. “The order is simply a communication of what we have done as a regulator looking at what it takes to increase or decrease tariff. If at the end of our meeting, back and front, we say increase, there is increase; if we say no increase, no increase. “It is going to be based on our engagement at the public forum. No increase to tariff . We are not leaving any stone unturned.

We do not want any increase without negotiations with the customers. I am a customer too. As customers, we will pay our bills. But if you suddenly change it, I need to know why. It must be for the good of everybody. Don’t forget, service must improve.” To regulate estimate billing Speaking on the regulation of estimated billing, Momoh stated that henceforth, with the introduction of the law, any DISCO that failed to provide meters to customers would be compelled to charge customers a regulated fee for electricity supplied, noting that the charges would be unfavourable to the DISCOs in the long run. He noted that the decision of the NERC to regulate estimate billing would help promote the drive towards ensuring the metering of customers across the country. He said, “We would do everything within our powers to ask and ensure that electricity distribution companies, DISCOs, provide meters through the Meter Asset Providers, MAP, to its customers.

“Failure to do so, we have a back up plan , which is one of our regulations that would be out in about a month’s time, on capping, which we would put a maximum amount the DISCOs can charge a customer that it had not been able to provide meter. In fact, it would be to their advantage to provide meters. “The capping issue is win-win situation for customers to want our meters and for DISCOs to want to provide meters. The minimum we are going to allow them to charge will not be to the advantage of DISCOs in the long run.” DISCOs to go ahead with tariff increase Meanwhile, in a statement in Abuja, ANED stated that for now, the tariffs would remain the same as they presently are, which is at the 2015 levels, until April 1, 2020.

According to ANED, from April 2020, there would be a slight increment to cater for tariff shortfalls which shall be gradually passed on to the consumer until this is fully completed by the end of 2021. It said, “NERC has just reviewed the MYTO 2015 and has published an Order on Tariffs and Minimum Remittance for Jan to June, 2020. The tariffs anticipate changes in the currency exchange rates between the United States and Nigeria, changes in the rate of inflation and gas prices. “In view of the foregoing, we state emphatically that there shall be no change or increase in the existing electricity tariff until April 01, 2020 when the new adjusted tariffs shall begin to gradually reflect the dynamism of our macro-economy. “We sincerely hope that this statement substantially clarifies the accurate position and allays any fears and concerns, our esteemed customers may have.”
