FORGIVENESS is no easy matter in some circumstances, yet there was a time when I thought it was easy; a time when I was naïve enough to think I was particularly graced with the gift of forgiveness. God has since shown me something.


We forgive easily when we understand someone has hurt us who doesn't apparently have the capacity to love. But when a person betrays us who's earned our trust; that's a completely different matter.

So, loving our enemies is easy, and it's our friends that let us down we find unforgivable. Add to this our family. We expect better. But for those we don't have any expectation of, our understanding and forgiveness is but a transaction - if, that is, we're schooled in the powerful college of merciful grace.

How can having this knowledge help us? Again, it's about expectations. When we get close enough to people to trust them, we also begin to expect they'll respect that trust. But if someone we don't know harms us, we may still be upset, but their transgression is easier to forgive - they just didn't understand. And how could they? They're forgiven.

Loving our enemies is easy in comparison to forgiving our friends when we perceive that they've betrayed us. How do we recover when our Christian friend has hurt us, and refuses to acknowledge it? Can we think of a brother or sister in Christ as an enemy - surely not! But they're harder to forgive than the person who openly, from the get go, resists us.

None of this is downplaying what Jesus taught in His Sermon on the Mount. Of course we must love and forgive our enemies.

We need God help more in forgiving our friends who act like enemies than we do loving our enemies who have never been our friends.

So, how can you remain motivated every day?

Be Crystal Clear

You have to be exceedingly clear about what you want to do. You have to have a goal in your mind as vivid and sharp as a photograph. Once you have that, you need to come back to that goal each and every day. So, how can you do that?

People have lots of ways to stay focused. They create "vision boards" where they post pictures of what they want or the life they want. Any visual imagery can keep things sharp in a highly tactile way. Other people will write down a very detailed series of goals and how they will get there. I have a friend that has set her phone with an alert that pops up every morning at 10 a.m. with the life goals she wants to achieve for the year. Every day she reflects on this for a minute or two. It helps keep her focused and the goals front and center.

It doesn't matter which way works for you. What's important is that you have full clarity over the goals you want to achieve.

Then, keep coming to them every day. Keep the goals front and center in your life.


Own It

Once you're clear on the goals, you have to own it. Owning it simply means being committed to it. One of the best ways I've found to be committed to something is to tell others about it.

Why?

When you tell others about your plans, you are putting yourself in a situation of risk. You can succeed or you can fail. You can also fail at many things along your way to ultimately succeeding on the goal. So, by telling others you are making public your thoughts and the people you tell will come back to you and ask you how you're coming along.

Telling others is one of the best ways I've found to own a decision. So, shout your goals from the mountaintops. Tell everyone. It will help you stay accountable.

Take It In Small Parts

Let's say that you're looking to accomplishing a big goal. You have to break it down into parts. You can't do everything at the same time. You just can't. Period.

When I started my company, I knew I wanted to build a global brand. I also knew that I wanted to develop a portfolio of independent brands. Today, I have at least 5 independent brands under the my umbrella. But, it's been years of careful and strategic building. It has not all happened in an instant, as much as I would like it. It has taken time to develop the thinking and logic behind each brand and then to execute.

You need to think of your own goals like that. They take time to build and taking it in small parts is the best way to help you ensure you get there. Remember, it's not a race. You're not looking to finish fast. You're looking to finish and you have to go from A to B to get to C.


Move!

Finally, one of the reasons most people don't get where they want to go and don't remain motivated is because they simply do not move. Remember when you were in science class in grammar school and you were taught Newton's 3 Laws of Motion?

If you remember nothing else, remember this from Newton - a body in motion stays in motion, unless stopped by some force. And, a body at rest stays at rest.

You've got to move. You can't stay put. If you want to be motivated, you have to move toward your goals every day. If you don't do that, you're not going to be motivated.

Think about it: why would you stay motivated to do something if you're not working to it every day?
