In a move that has left the Hausa- dominated Sabo community in Ibadan, Oyo State, shocked since Sunday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Senator Teslim Folarin sent his aides to carry a transformer he donated to the community , few days before the election. Folarin who came fourth in the election conceded defeat on Saturday night even before the official results were announced. The members of the community raised an alarm when they sighted Folarin aides by removing the Transformer in the early hours of Sunday but the aides were not moved. Members of the community immediately stormed the palace of the Sarkin Hausawa, Alhaji Ahmed Dahiru Zungeru where they expressed their concerns over the development, The Sarki waded into the matter by calling on Folarin’s political associate within the community, Alhaji Bashiru Maiborno, for clarification. Daily Trust gathered that Maiborno made efforts to effect the return of the transformer to the community, but he was rebuffed as the community members vowed not to take back the transformer from Senator Folarin. He however claimed that the transformer was removed with a view to keeping it in a safer place. “Senator Folarin is a man of his words,” he said. Few days before the election, Senator Folarin’s wife was spotted on a bike with some motorcycle riders campaigning for her husband in Ibadan. http://www.naij.com/421296-teslim-folarin-stuns-community.html |
President-Elect Buhari spoke exclusively with SaharaTV on how he plans to deal with corruption, the government’s finances, Boko Haram, and Nigeria’s economy. Most notably he blamed Minister Iweala for the financial situation in Nigeria, and that he will make his Ministerial appointees declare their assets to the public. When asked about statements from Minister of Finance Iweala on the fiscal conditions and government spending in Nigeria, President-Elect Buhari told SaharaTV that “I’m afraid the Finance Minister has no cause to complain because the governors cannot force the central government to act outside the Constitution.” President-Elect Buhari firmly stated that “all those that were governors, ministers, permanent secretaries, head of foreign staff and all those with political appointments will have to declare their assets on the assumption of their appointment and definitely with the courts. And once they leave they have to re- declare their assets.” He said this would ensure greater accountability among public servants. However, he did tell SaharaTV that he does not plan to interfere with the judiciary and whatever action it may take pursuing corrupt public officials. He stated that his administration would not “become embroiled in investigation every ministry, then the government will not have time to move forward.” On the contentious issue of Oil Block ownership in Nigeria, and an equitable distribution of the country’s wealth, he suggested that partisan politics in Nigeria is the cause of inequitability in the oil sector. President-Elect Buhari claimed that he wanted to professionalize the oil sector in Nigeria. He said that the “proliferation of oil fields to people who don’t even know what it is, is one of the messes partisan politics has brought.” Within the equitable distribution of wealth and job creation for youth, the President-Elect pointed to the APC manifesto calling for greater emphasis on mining and agriculture development. When pressed on rumors that former president Obasanjo was exercising inordinate influence on Buhari's administration he said, "I think that people have to accept the realities of Nigeria’s political development. General Olusegun Obasanjo is the only living Nigerian that led Nigeria for more than 11 years, so for anybody to think that General Obasanjo is irrelevant or he was trying to push his influence over issues, I think is being uncharitable and not being fair to Nigeria’s political development." President-Elect Buhari is now confronted with the challenge of appointing a ministerial and cabinet team, and he has stated publicly that PDP defectors should not expect to receive Minister appointments. http://saharareporters.com/2015/04/12/breaking-president-elect-buhari-speaks-saharatv-slams-iweala-and-will-force-ministers |

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has asked President-Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to pay more attention to institutional reforms and be magnanimous in victory. He also urged him to start healing the wounds and bitterness across the land occasioned by the campaigns and those he called evil disciples. In a letter of congratulation dated March 31, 2015 addressed to the Gen. Buhari, Obasanjo reminded the President Elect that a lot of damage has been done to various institutions in the country which need urgent attention, pointing out that he must immediately assemble a crack team of Nigerians who will assist him in putting the country on the right part again. The letter reads: “I hasten to congratulate you on your success and victory in the Presidential election of March 28, 2015. Your success and victory after three previous unsuccessful attempts must be great object lessons for you and for all politicians particularly in Nigeria. “For me, the totality of the 2015 election holds many lessons for our democracy and democratization process which are both maturing. On this occasion, the system has been unnecessarily overheated before and particularly during the campaign when emphasis was more in trivialities and hate, divisive, in dignifying and disrespectful statements and comments rather than on pressing issues requiring attention. “I know that in victory, you will be magnanimous to start binding the wounds and bitterness occasioned by the campaign and the evil disciples. “With so much harm already done to many national institutions, in lauding the military which proudly nurtured you and me, you will have a lot to do on institution reform, education, healthcare, economy, infrastructure, power, youth employment, agribusiness, oil and gas, external affairs, cohesiveness of our nation and ridding our land of corruption. Your varied and wide experience will undoubtedly stand you in good stead. “I am also sure that there are men and women of goodwill, character and virtue across the board that you can mobilise to join hands with you in the reform, repairs and redirection that will be imperative to put Nigeria back on the fast lane of good governance, unity, cohesiveness, development and progress. Once again, I felicitate with you and wish you well” Obasanjo stated. In its own letter of congratulation, the Nigeria Labour Congress said the election has opened a new and important chapter in the socio-political development of the nation. President of the Congress, Dr. Ayuba Wabba said: “We at the Nigeria Labour Congress join millions of our compatriots in congratulating you on your victory in perhaps the most keenly contested presidential election in the history of our country. “We strongly believe that your election has undoubtedly opened a new and important chapter in the socio-political development of our nation as we have finally broken the jinx of transiting from one democratically elected civilian government controlled by a ruling party to one contributed by an opposition party. “Your victory is a lesson in perseverance and commitment, made possible by the patience, zeal, resolve, resilience and determination of Nigerians many of whom have undying belief in you. “We believe this special trust reposed in you is a sacred bond between you and the Nigerian people as well as a call to an uncommon duty at a special period in the history of our nation. “The times are challenging and will draw from you every grain of wisdom and courage, justice and equity, urgency and necessity. “We at the Nigeria Labour Congress, like other compatriots not only look up to you with great expectations, we look forward to working with and engaging your government. We stand ready to work with you in defining as well as charting a new agenda for Nigeria. As we await your response, please accept the assurances of our highest esteem”. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/obasanjo-writes-buhari/ |

Barring any attempt to scuttle the will of the people, the stage seems set for a change of leadership in the nation’s polity with results of the weekend’s presidential polls indicating that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd), is in comfortable lead in three of the country’s six geo-political zones. The zones include the two largest ones – North West and South West. Buhari also polled more votes than his arch-rival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Goodluck Jonathan, in North East zone. The incumbent president clinched the South South and the South East. Both candidates have shared the spoils in in North Central zone with Buhari winning in Kogi, Kwara and Niger states while Jonathan cornered Nasarawa, Plateau and Benue. Our correspondents reported that from results trickling in from the collation centres, the former military head of state has emerged the preferred choice of the people in the presidential poll. “There is no doubt the race has been won and lost and that Gen Buhari has won,” a source at the INEC office confided in LEADERSHIP. “Clearly, it is three zones to two; and after winning North West which has Kano and South West with Lagos, the two most populated states and zones, nothing can stop him.” Jonathan lost vital polling units, including the one at the seat of power where he resides, Aso Villa, Abuja. Many of his cabinet members, including the minister of education, Ibrahim Shekarau; his Federal Capital Territory (FCT) counterpart, Bala Mohammed, and the minister of state (II) for foreign affairs, Musliu Obanikoro posted dismal results in their home units. Many other high-profile politicians lost their polling units to opposition parties. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to announce the result of the presidential election, but the director of media, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPPCO), Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, claimed, in a press statement yesterday, that Jonathan had won in 23 states and APC in 14. Nigeria has 36 states. APC spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, however, raise the alarm that President Jonathan and his cronies were working round the clock to manipulate the people’s mandate by unlawfully coveting majority votes or rendering the elections inconclusive. When asked, INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, faulted Fani-Kayode’s claim that the PDP was leading in 23 states, or 64 percent, in the presidential poll. He said that the only results received were from two states, Ekiti and Ogun. He also declared that the commission was not under any pressure to declare the outcome of the presidential election inconclusive, while expressing worry at the crisis in River State, stating that the commission was investigating it and would take a position soon. Basically what a presidential candidate needs to be declared winner is 25% in 24 states including FCT... From the exit polls,we've received,APC will definitely get more than 25% in these 24 states even if they don't get up to 25% in any of the Eastern states and the south-South states.. Lagos,Oyo,Ogun,Osun,Ondo,KwaraKogi,Benue,Nasa rawa,Niger,Kebbi, Sokoto,Zamfara,Katsina Kaduna,Kano,Jigawa,Bauchi,Gombe Yobe,Borno,Adamawa,Taraba and Abuja.. APC has already got more than 25% in Ekiti... If you do the data analysis of PVC distribution in APC strongholds against PDP's,APC will definitely record higher number of total votes no matter what happens in the East and South-South.. APC votes in the North-West alone will cancel out all PDP's votes in the East and South-South even if they record 100%... |
