T he Court of Appeal has dismissed the ex-parte application by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, seeking to set aside the order made on Friday by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) issuing bench warrant for Saraki’s arrest. Saraki's lawyer, J B Daudu It said it cannot interfere with the proceedings pending at the lower court. It will be in the interest of notice for the respondents to be put on notice. Consequently, the ex-parte application refused and the motion on notice set down for hearing on September 29 Justice Armed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, in another ruling just delivered, refused a similar application by Saraki. He adjourned to September 30 for the hearing of the substantive suit by Saraki, challenging the competence of charge before the CCT and the preliminary objection filed by the CCT, Code of Conduct Tribunal and Federal Ministry of Justice. Justice Mohammed held that, in view of the constitutional and radical nature of the issues raised in the respondents’ objection, it was reasonable for the court not to waste time on interlocutory applications. http://saharareporters.com/2015/09/21/court-appeal-federal-high-court-rejects-saraki’s-prayers-stop-tribunal |

Angry local government workers in Benue State yesterday chased away members of the state House of Assembly who had visited headquarters of the 23 council areas to perform their legislative duties. Daily Trust reports that the lawmakers had during plenary session last week insisted that they have the constitutional responsibility to make laws, investigate any matter and carry out oversight functions on the verification exercise of LG staff. The idea was mooted following the hues and cries of workers at the grassroots, who were subjected to what they called ‘”needless and stressful biometric exercise” by the state government in order to detect ghost workers. The aim, according to sources, was to pave way for the disbursement of the bailout fund the government received from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Our correspondent gathered that the workers vehemently resisted the lawmakers yesterday, with some physically protesting while others stayed away from the venue of the exercise. Although, none of the workers agreed to speak with their names on print, those who spoke said it was one exercise too many by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state. Effort to speak with the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) chairman in the state was not fruitful at the time of this report, but the workers hinted that they had the blessing of their leaders to protest. Speaker of the State Assembly, Terkimbi Ikyange, however told newsmen in Makurdi that the workers misunderstood their good intention and responded negatively, describing the workers’ position on the matter as rather “unfortunate.” Ikyange said: “We heard some people were termed “ghost workers” while they were physically present at the other screening exercises. We wanted to confirm this and many more issues. But as you can see, soon, many of them would be sacked. Then, they would start running to us (assembly) for intervention.” http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/politics/angry-lg-workers-chase-away-benue-lawmakers/116801.html |
Former Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon has expressed confidence that the military will soon defeat the Boko Haram insurgents. He however said the Federal Government could not have set the December deadline to end the insurgency. Gowon made the remarks yesterday in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State during an advocacy visit to Governor David Umahi on malaria and other tropical diseases. The former head of state, however said he was confident the military would continue to put in its best to end the insurgency that has claimed many lives. Gowon who was Nigeria’s leader during the civil war which lasted between 1967 and 1970 had noted that then, the uprising was thought to be concluded with a police operation but lasted 30 months. "I can tell you this. Nobody can really talk about when any particular operation is going to end. And as a Commander-in- Chief, I know this. Yes, you can say you target a particular time, but it may finish before that time or it may go slightly beyond… "I assure you that I have absolute confidence in our military that they are going to really deal with the situation as they are doing at the moment," said the former head of state. Besides, he expressed concern that the insurgents have resorted to using under-aged and innocent children as suicide bombers to carry out their various operation. Gowon who appreciated the successes recorded by the previous government under President Goodluck Jonathan in the fight against Boko Haram maintained that President Buhari's administration since it came on board has seen the fight against the sect as paramount in his agenda. He urged Nigerians to pray fervently saying "prayer is an alternative and the most effective weapon to defeat Boko Haram.” http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/general/military-can-end-insurgency-soon-gowon/116839.html |
