How Nigerian Diaspora Commission Boss, Abike Dabiri Signalled Radio Presenter Not To Entertain Questions On Itunu Babalola Who Died In Ivory Coast’s Detention
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians In Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has been caught on camera signalling to a radio presenter not to entertain a question from a journalist, David Hundeyin, who wanted to ask a question on the death of Itunu Babalola, a Nigerian lady that died in prison in Cote d’Ivoire recently.
Babalola, a Cote d’Ivoire-based Nigerian trader who was wrongly accused of human trafficking died in the prison on November 15, 2021.
She was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment, which was later reduced to 10 years.
After Bablola’s death, many condemnations and criticisms greeted the NIDCOM CEO for not taking drastic steps that could have prevented the 26-year-old businesswoman in an Ivorian prison.
However, in a video seen by SaharaReporters on Tuesday, Dabiri-Erewa appeared to be dodging some questions pertaining to Babalola’s demise on a live radio programme on Lagos Talks 91.3FM where she was a guest.
Dabiri-Erewa was seen using both her head to nod in disagreement or refusal and her hand not to entertain a question from an investigative journalist, David Hundeyin, who first broke the news of Babalola’s predicament in Ivory Coast in March 2021.
On March 14, David Hundeyin, a journalist, had posted Babalola’s story on Twitter.
The post went viral and eventually gained the attention of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NIDCOM chief executive officer, in a statement, had confirmed the report at the time, saying the commission was doing all it can to secure the release of Babalola.
In the video, however, the presenter had earlier said, “You know, he’s been very passionate about Itunu’s death. Unfortunately, but err… I can’t hear him right now. To be very honest, I’m trying to see if you want to ask any question.”
The NIDCOM chairman was shaking her head vigorously and at the same gesticulating with her hand to tell the lady presenter that she would not entertain Hundeyin’s question.
Hundeyin in the video had said, “Good evening, my name is David Hundeyin, and I’m actually a journalist who broke the news about Itunu Babalola in March, Now. I have a very…”
chinchum: i doubt i have heard any one who suffered similar demolition agreed to receiving notice. It is similar to virtually all prisoners claiming they were not guilty and were implicated.
ebufa: I just love the new found boldness of ndiyoruba.....maybe the clueless Igbo one Nigerianists will learn some sense..........make una come home to Biafraland.......It is peaceful Eastside, Anambra is in good hands....Abia is set to boom under Otti and Ebonyi just commissioned a very Colorful airport! Leave Eko for haters like hellisnew and his cohorts!
waynetee: I don't pity anyone doing illegal things, trying to cut corners .
Saying someone burnt your goods without any trace of evidence is a sigh that you are foolish person. Many yoruba dominated markets got burnt of recent too
Yoruba agberos and rascals in government are witch-hunting those they considered trait
richie240: Oga I blv u are not rabble-rousing, bcus u suppose know say when u build house illegally/on illegal site, there's nothing like compensation. In fact sef, u are made to pay (a fine) for trespassing.
na your pa. Pa be rabble rouser. Mpama that can't make his statement without insult
DiscoverID: Demolition noticed was served to them since 2017. Typically of Nigerians, and expecially igbos, going against laws and thinking bribery will save them.
So it's only Igbos that always go against the law and bribe in Nigeria?.
helinues: Have you seen an armed robber confessing he's one before? Except if they are tortured.
Yeah exactly the scenario here. Government can't just wake up and start to destroy building s, the state attorney must have advised them how to go about it, issuing early notification before demolition.
Court case must have been prepared for self
We know the modus operandi of the government of Lagos state and her agberos
waynetee: We don buy the whole Lagos doesn't know Lagos is not for sale, unfortunately more will be demolished because Lagos is too congested because of many unapproved buildings.
This comment is made with a mixture of forthrightness and bad fate.
Yes nobody should build in an unapproved location.
But saying "We don buy the whole Lagos", is a sign of ill mind.
All around the world, people buy properties.
Yorubas owns properties even in Portharcourt, US, UK, etc. Will you be happy if they face same fate?. You have burnt their goods in different markets, isn't that enough already?
If they are indeed not foretold, why can't they sue LASG?
No I don't think it's a victim mentality. If she had gotten a slightest of idea that her property would be demolished, she probably would have moved her properties. She said she was in the hospital when she got the information
Video: Tears as Lagos demolishes 13 buildings at Ajao estate
Video: Tears as Lagos demolishes 13 buildings at Ajao estate By Biodun Busari Residents have lamented as Lagos State Government demolished no fewer than 13 residential buildings at the Ajao Estate area of the state.
The demolition which began on Friday has been blamed by the state authorities as illegal occupation, construction along pipeline and cited in close proximity to the Murtala International Airport, Lagos.
A viral video showed the demolition of the buildings carried out as a woman’s voice wailed that she did not pick anything out from her house.
The General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, explained several reasons for the demolition on Friday, while briefing newsmen.
According to Oki, the buildings lacked required approvals and were cited around Airport restricted areas while some are cited on aviation fuel pipelines.
Oki, who described the situation as a disaster waiting to happen, expressed fear of possibile fire outbreak from the pipeline in future which he said could result in loss of lives and properties.
He said the builders also lacked required documents as approvals for construction in that area.
