The Democratic Republic of Congo army says it has quashed an attempted coup against President Felix Tshisekedi in the capital Kinshasa involving Congolese and foreign fighters.

DR Congo army spokesperson Brig Gen Sylavin Ekenge said on the state-run broadcaster RTNC TV that several suspects have been detained and the "situation is now under control".

His statement comes hours after armed men attacked the house of Vital Kamerhe, the former chief of staff and close ally to President Tshisekedi early on Sunday morning.

Witnesses say a group of about 20 assailants in army uniform attacked the residence and an exchange of gunfire followed.

Two guards and an assailant were killed in the attack on Mr Kamerhe's house, his spokesman and the Japanese ambassador said in posts on X.

The men also occupied the Palais de la Nation, the office of the President of the Republic which is located in the city centre, a place highly secured by the Republican Guard.

Japan's ambassador in the Congolese capital has warned nationals not to go out.

President Tshisekedi has not made any public comment on the situation so far.

Local media reports said the assailants were members of the New Zaire Movement linked to formerly-exiled politician Christian Malanga.

The BBC has seen a video of Mr Malanga saying in Lingala, the local language: “We the military are tired, we cannot march together with Vital Kamerhe and President Félix Tshisekedi."

President Tshisekedi was re-elected for a second term in the disputed elections last year in December. He won about 78% of the vote.

Nearly 20 people were killed in election-related violence in the run-up to the vote.

Congo is a country with vast mineral wealth and a huge population, but despite this life has not improved for most people, with conflict, corruption and poor governance persisting.

Much of the country's natural resources lie in the east where violence still rages despite Mr Tshisekedi's attempts to deal with the situation by imposing a state of siege, ceasefire deals and bringing in regional troops

BREAKING: One Shot As Detained Soldiers Break Out Of 'Overcrowded Cells' To Protest Poor Feeding, Others At Nigeria's 8 Division In Sokoto

The source said some of the soldiers had been in detention for four to five years.

Asoldier identified as Lcpl Charles Ekefure with 17NA/76/1660 has been reportedly shot following complaints by some detained soldiers who broke out of their cells (guardrooms) in Sokoto State.

The incident occurred on Thursday at the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto amid the soldiers’ clamour for better food and improved living conditions.

It was learnt that the soldiers had demanded to speak to Major General Mutkut Godwin, the GOC 8 Division, Nigerian Army.

A source who spoke with SaharaReporters on Friday said over 100 soldiers were detained at the 8 Division with 10 soldiers in each cell.

The source said some of the soldiers had been in detention for four to five years.

The source said, "There are 10 rooms in the facility and each room is supposed to take maybe two persons, it's very small. But the rooms are now congested because there are almost 10 persons in a room and over 40 people are sleeping in the corridor.

"The incident happened on Thursday as the detained soldiers complained about their standard of living, broke the guardroom gate and demanded to speak with the GOC.

"Some officers later told them that the GOC was on the ground to speak with them but surprisingly the GOC was not there. But they opened fire on the soldiers. Lcpl Charles Ekefure and Lt Col JS Obot gave the order.

"Many soldiers are there who have not been receiving salaries for 2 to 3 years.

"While some of the soldiers in the detention have been there for 4 to 5 years now. Injustice has been taking place," the source added.

"Some of the soldiers have now been moved from the 8 Div provost guardroom where the incident happened to garrison guardroom, while some were moved to Airforce guardroom. Seven others were granted open arrest."

SaharaReporters learnt that the soldier who was shot had been taken to MRS Hospital in Sokoto.

"I understand that his bone was affected," the source said.

Meanwhile, all efforts to reach the Army spokesperson, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, were not successful as he didn't answer calls or reply to messages sent to his mobile phone.

Security: Helicopters providing aerial support for Abuja-Kaduna train passengers – Police

The statement also disclosed that the Nigeria Police have apprehended the masterminds of the tragic Abuja–Kaduna train attack in Katari, Kaduna State, on March 28, 2022, when some passengers lost their lives and several were abducted.

Among those arrested is Ibrahim Abdullahi, also known as Mande, who confessed to leading a kidnapping syndicate operating along the Kaduna - Abuja Highway. Additionally, two other suspects, Auwal Ayuba and Babaginda Alhaji Bello, were presented by the police as members of the armed group responsible for the attack on the Abuja-bound train in Kaduna two years ago.

“One of the major cases is the arrest of one Ibrahim Abdullahi, aka MANDE at Abuja - Kaduna Road flyover by Rido Junction. The suspect confessed to being the leader of a kidnap syndicate terrorising Kaduna - Abuja highway, ranked among other criminals like Dogo Gide and Bello Turji. He had participated in various kidnapping incidents including the kidnapping incident at Green Field University and he partook in almost all the kidnappings along the Abuja - Kaduna highway.
“Similarly, from the confessional statements of the suspects, on 28th of March, 2022, Ibrahim, alongside one Auwal Ayuba who was also paraded for kidnapping, and one Babangida Alhaji Bello were part of the armed group that attacked the train on its way from Abuja in the Kateri - Rijana area of Kaduna state, with several persons killed and others abducted.”

What you should know

In recent years, the Abuja - Kaduna Expressway and train tracks have experienced numerous violent crimes, leading the police to implement measures to maintain security on that corridor.
One of the most notable incidents of violent crime on this route occurred on March 28, 2022, when an Abuja-bound train was attacked around 7:45 pm at Kateri - Rijana in Kaduna, resulting in the death of some passengers and the kidnapping of hundreds of others.
A similar major event took place on October 21, 2021, when bandits detonated explosives on the Abuja - Kaduna train track and fired live rounds into the driver compartments, leaving passengers traumatized.
On both occasions, the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) suspended operations on the Abuja - Kaduna train route.
With 2.18 million passengers transported by NRC trains in 2023, ensuring security on major train routes across the country would provide relief for operators and passengers alike, making train travel an attractive option for interstate journeys, analysts say.

Water scarcity in Kano, Nigeria, is a significant issue, exacerbated by rapid population growth, inadequate infrastructure, and climate change. The city faces challenges in providing clean water to its residents, leading to reliance on groundwater sources, which are often contaminated. Efforts to address this include infrastructure development, water conservation, and public awareness campaigns.

Kano's government has been implementing various measures to alleviate water scarcity, such as drilling boreholes, constructing water treatment plants, and promoting rainwater harvesting. However, more sustainable solutions are needed, including better management of existing water resources, investment in modern infrastructure, and community involvement in conservation efforts. Additionally, addressing the underlying factors contributing to water scarcity, such as population growth and climate change, is crucial for long-term water security in Kano.

Isn't this awesome?. African Man has defiled the physics law of gravity. Gravity tends to acts upon any object to pull it down when the object is above the surface of the earth, but the Africa man defiled this law, by climbing a tiny line used for spreading of cloths, and maintaining balance on the line, even with one leg, and wearing clothes while standing on the line. This has earned him a lot of applause from spectators.

Imagine shutting down a divisional police headquarters for over 4 years. That means the Nigerian state lost these territories to these armed men for 4 years.

If Nigeria fails to find a permanent solution to this issue, we would only be having a temporary cease fire.

Orsu Divisional Police Headquarters Re-Opens After Years Of Shutdown

The Orsu Police Divisional Headquarters in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State has resumed police and security duties after it was shut down due to terror activities of suspected Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) members in the area.

This is coming on the heels of an operation carried out by the Nigerian Army at a Ihiteukwa community in Orsu LGA on Saturday.

According to the Director Army Public Relations, Onyema Nwachukwu, the Nigerian troops dislodged an IPOB/ESN hideout at Ihiteukwa and neutralized one of the suspects.

He said: “Nigerian Army troops have successfully cleared IPOB/ESN hideout at Ihiteukwa Community in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, neutralizing one IPOB/ESN Terrorist after an intense firefight on Saturday.

“On overpowering the fighters, the gallant troops conducted a search in their hideout and recovered 3 Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), one Toyota Highlander SUV, one Hilux vehicle, 8 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, 6 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and one locally fabricated single barrel gun.

“Other items recovered from the terrorists’ hideout include a pair of proscribed Biafran uniform, one solar panel, one CCTV camera, 10 mobile phones, batteries, a bundle of proscribed Biafran Currency, 3 solar street lights, 3 jungle hats, pairs of black boots and assorted charms.”

Sequel to the success of the dislodgement of the suspected IPOB/ESN members at their hideouts in Orsu, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, alongside DC Operations and operatives of the State’s Special Task Force comprising of the Police and Military, on Tuesday embarked on a confidence building patrol in Orlu, Orsu and Oru East LGAs.

The aim of the visit is to re-engineer back public trust in security agencies and foster community participation in the onslaught against crime and criminality in these areas.

Also, Hon. Francis Uche Agabige representing Orsu State Constituency and one of the leaders of Orsu LGA, Hon. Engr Friday Ibekaeme, joined the CP in accessing the security situation of these areas and collaborative emplaced strategies to make it safer for economic growth and development.

Air Peace, on Saturday, commenced its Lagos-London flight services.

The commencement of the service came a month after it announced plans to begin direct flight operations to London on March 30 during a prelaunch forum organised by the airline in February.

In November, Air Peace’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Allen Onyema, announced that the airline had successfully obtained the Foreign Carrier Operator Permit and Third Country Operator Permit.

This means it is qualified to operate flights to Europe and the United Kingdom.

The development was made known on the Air Peace X handle on Saturday.Tehairline wrote, “London service has commenced and we’re delighted to have achieved yet another feat in our drive to continually provide peaceful connectivity across cities.

“A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this launch.”

Present at the inaugural flight to London is the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo; and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anita, among others
