One of the oldest texts of the Qur’an in the world, on parchment that was possibly made within the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad, hasbeen found in the collection of theCadbury Research Libraryat the University of Birmingham. The two well-preserved leaves of parchment, closely written in an elegant script, have been radiocarbon-dated to between AD568 and AD645, a result regarded by the scientists who tested it at Oxford as near certain – 95.4% accurate. “We knew it was going to be a good date, but when we actually got the dates it was just an ‘oh my goodness’ moment,” Susan Worrall, director of the special collections of the library, said. “You don’t get very many days like that in a career.” Muhammad is generally thought to have lived between AD570 and AD632. His teachings were transmitted orally or partially recorded in writing, and soon after his death all the texts that could be found were collated. The Birmingham text may be among these earliest writings, which became part of one of world religion’s great holy books, or from the text of the first authorised version, believed to have been written in AD650. The text is almost identical to that used today, but the parchment is so old that scholars may reconsider the accepted date for the compilation of the definitive text. The parchment came to the library with a mass of other early Middle Eastern manuscripts collected in the 1920s by the scholar, theologianand Chaldean priestAlphonse Mingana, but it is not known where he found it. However, the parchment and the beautiful early Arabic script closely resemble other fragments in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris from the earliest mosque in Egypt, founded in AD642. The significance of Birmingham’s leaves, which hold part ofSuras(chapters) 18 to 20, was missed because they were bound together with another text, in a very similar hand but written almost 200 years later. The two odd leaves were spotted by a PhD student, Alba Fedeli, who has been working on the Mingana manuscripts. “We know her very well, she has been working away for some time on the Mingana collection. When she brought this to us and said she thought two leaves came from another manuscript, and we looked closely at them, we could see that she was right,” Worrall said. “At first glance they look identical to the other pages, but once you know you can see that the text does not flow. The script is wonderful, still legible to anyone who can read Arabic today.” She said the university turned down a request some years ago from a German institution to test the manuscript, but in view of Fedeli’s discovery, decided to fund the tests and conservation work itself. The verses are incomplete, and believed to have been an aide memoire for an imam who already knew the Qur’an by heart, but the text is very close to the accepted authorised version. David Thomas, professor of Christianity andIslam, and the Nadir Dinshaw professor of interreligious relations at the university, called the discovery “one of the most surprising secrets of the university’s collections”. He said it supported the view that the version of the Qur’an in use today had hardly changed from the earliest recorded version, and the Muslim belief that the text represented an exact record of the revelations delivered to the Prophet. “They could well take us back to within a few years of the actual founding of Islam. According to Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad received the revelations that form the Qur’an, the scripture of Islam, between the years AD610 and AD632, the year of his death,” Thomas said. Qur’anic materials were at first held in memory or written down on materials including parchment, stone, palm leaves and the shoulder blades of camels. It was Caliph Abu Bakr, the first leader of the Muslim community after Muhammad, who ordered their compilation into a book with the final, authoritative written form completed and fixed under the direction of the third leader, Caliph Uthman, in about AD650. “Muslims believe that the Qur’an they read today is the same text thatwas standardised under Uthman and regard it as the exact record of the revelations that were delivered to Muhammad,” Thomas said. “The tests carried out on the parchment of the Birmingham folios yieldthe strong probability that the animal from which it was taken was alive during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad or shortly afterwards. This means that the parts of the Qur’an that are written on this parchment can, with a degree of confidence, be dated to less than two decades after Muhammad’s death. ”Muhammad Isa Waley, a senior curator at the British Library, called the discovery “news to rejoice Muslim hearts”. He said the early Muslim community was not wealthy enough to stockpile the number of animal skins required to make a Qur’an, and so the text must have been written soon after the parchment was made. The very early date from the radiocarbon tests could mean thatthe text pre-dated the creation of the authorised text of the complete Qur’an, or that the definitive version was created earlier than scholars had believed. The newly conserved leaves will go on free public display for the first time in October, at the university’sBarber Institute of Fine Arts, and Birmingham’s city museum is also interested in creating an exhibition around them. Because their significance was not then recognised, the parchment leaves were not included ina major British Library exhibition in 2007 of some of the earliest religious texts– but Worrall said she expects to have many applications from museums to borrowthem in the future. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/22/oldest-quran-fragments-found-at-birmingham-university

A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Farida Waziri, has described President Muhammadu Buhari as a man of destiny who must be supported by all Nigerians irrespective of their religious, ethnic and political affiliations. Mrs. Waziri, who is the founder and principal partner of Brookfield Chambers, a firm of legal practitioners based in Abuja, stated this on Saturday in Uga-Mbagwa, Oshongo Local Government Area of Benue State while fielding questions from journalists after the commissioning of her community’s worship centre. “My response to your question will be that, I believe in President Buhari because he is believable and he has remained constant like the morning star since I know him and beyond that. I’m sure that he is a man of destiny, a resolute, sincere and committed leader who says what he means and does what he preaches. “In the history of Nigeria, he is today the only leader who has contested the presidential election for four consecutive times and on the fourth time made history by defeating a sitting president. Remember he almost paid the ultimate price when his convoy was targeted in Kaduna before the election? Some other persons would have chickened out and even flee the country but he remained resolute and committed to the course he believed in. “That I can tell you, is the kind of gut the nation needs at this critical time especially to fight corruption which is one of our greatest challenges today.” When asked why she was not visible during and after the recent general elections, Mrs. Waziri said she has been out of the country attending to some pressing issues. She expressed happiness that President Buhari won the presidential election against all odds. She said the time has come for Nigerians to come together and salvage the country irrespective of their differences. “We have no other country other than Nigeria, this is why I plead with everyone I meet to please support the Buhari administration because that is the only sure way we can make Nigeria a better place not only for ourselves but for generations coming behind us”, she stated. The former EFCC boss said an indication that a lot of things will change for good under the Buhari government is the number of positive changes that are already being witnessed by Nigerians within the first three weeks of the new regime. “When the right leadership is provided and in place, a lot of things will naturally fall in place. That answers the question being asked by Nigerians at the moment: how come we’re now told that our refineries will start working? That’s enough to convince us that a lot of good things will come in place under the Buhari government as long as we are ready to play our role as patriotic citizens”, she added. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/185736-buhari-a-man-of-destiny-farida-waziri.html |
Asamoah Gyan says John Obi Mikel will "definitely" be leaving Chelsea for Al Ain this summer, insisting terms over a move have already been agreed. The midfielder is reported to have grown frustrated at a lack of first- team opportunities at Stamford Bridge, having started less than half of Chelsea's Premier League games last season. Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas - both signed within the last 18 months - were Jose Mourinho's preferred pairing as Chelsea won the league title, and Mikel now looks to be heading for the exit door. "I heard it this week that he has agreed terms with Al Ain and will most definitely be playing for us next season," Gyan told Metro TV . "Its great news for us because Mikel Obi is a very good player and very experienced. "It will be exciting playing with him in the same team, because I believe both of us, with the help of our other colleagues, can do more for the club." m.goal.com/x/en-india/news/12992302 |

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said the use of only military operations to tackle Boko Haram activities in Nigeria and other violent groups across the world cannot end insurgency. A statement on Friday by the African Export-Import Bank, indicated that the former president said this during the bank’s 22nd Annual General Meeting held in Lusaka, Zambia. Obasanjo, speaking about conflicts in Africa, also said the crises were caused by failure to address certain social problems in the society such as educational disparity. Afrixembank’s spokesman, Obi Emekekwue quoted Obasanjo in the statement thus, “He proposed a carrot and stick solution to the conflicts on the continent through an approach involving military solutions and social development since a purely military approach would not work. “According to Obasanjo, a situation, such as in Nigeria, where one section had an educational attainment level of 79 per cent while another had only 19 per cent, created room for conflict.” The former president also called on Nigeria and other African countries to pursue economic integration on the basis of regional economic communities rather than doing so with the over 54 countries on the continent. He noted that by pursuing economic growth, each region of the continent would serve as platforms to strengthen Africa. In a wide-ranging discussion, the ex-president stressed the importance of infrastructure in promoting intra-African trade and called for the establishment of a viable well-run coastal shipping line from Dakar in Senegal to Maputo in Mozambique to improve intra-African trade. Obasanjo stated further that while Nigeria and other nations on the continent should encourage the local production of goods, they should also encourage and develop the process of moving those goods. The statement added, “Former President Obasanjo added that Africa should start adding value to its commodities rather than exporting raw commodities only for those commodities to be sent back to the continent as finished goods.” Meanwhile, the Afreximbank on Saturday announced the appointment of Benedict Oramah as its new boss. Oramah’s appointment was one of the key decisions taken during the bank’s AGM. “Dr. Oramah takes over from Jean-Louis Ekra, who has been the bank’s chief executive officer since 2005. Oramah, a Nigerian national, has served as Executive Vice President in charge of Business Development and Corporate Banking at Afreximbank since 2008. He was a pioneer staff of the bank, which he joined in 1994 as Chief Analyst, rising to the position of Senior Director, Planning and Business Development Department in 2007. He previously served as Assistant Manager (Research) at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank from 1992 to 1994,” the statement said. http://www.punchng.com/news/military-alone-cant-end-insurgency-obasanjo/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |

President Goodluck Jonathan will on Wednesday (today) preside over the Federal Executive Council meeting for the last time as the country’s President. The council consisting of the President (as chairman), Vice President, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, ministers, special advisers to the President, Head of Civil Service of the Federation and the National Security Adviser is the highest decision-making body in the country. Members meet every Wednesday (except occasionally when meetings are postponed) to approve contracts and government policies. Since Jonathan will be handing over to Muhammadu Buhari as the country’s new President on Friday, this is the last time he would be chairing the meeting. He is expected to use the opportunity of the valedictory session to thank council members for their supports while his administration lasted. Although there were speculations on Tuesday evening that Jonathan might thereafter dissolve his cabinet, our correspondent learnt that he might not do so. A top government official said the President might delay such proclamation till Thursday or be silent about it and allow the tenure of the ministers to expire naturally with him. The official said dissolution of cabinet on Wednesday might stop outgoing officials who are members of the presidential inauguration committee from continuing to render their services as they could not be doing so in their personal capacities. The SGF, Senator Pius Anyim, co-chairs the inauguration committee with a former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipreye Sylvia, of the All Progressives Congress. Ministers such as Senator Bala Muhammed (Federal Capital Territory); Dr. Akon Eyakenyi (Land, Housing and Urban Development); Mr. Abba Moro (Interior); Mr. Osita Chidoka (Aviation); Chief Edem Duke (Culture and Tourism); and Col. Austin Akobundu (retd.) (State, Defence) are also members of the inauguration committee. Coming barely 48 hours to the end of Jonathan’s administration, however, members of the council may not take any important decision at the Wednesday meeting. Members might be given opportunities to speak on their experiences and thank the President for the opportunity given them to serve. http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-attends-last-fec-meeting-today/ |

Others who benefitted from the latest appointments by Jonathan are Prof. Bashir Mohammed Fagge who is now the new Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi and Dr. Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi who has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida. Sule further noted that the appointments are with immediate effected. President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday said the Federal Government has approved the establishment of two specialised universities. Speaking at the 31st convocation of the Bayero University, Kano on Saturday, Jonathan said the universities were the Marine University and the Federal University of Health Sciences. Jonathan, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Julius Okoje, said the decision was borne out of the government’s desire to give more students with the requisite qualifications the opportunity to access quality education. He said that in spite of the numerous challenges, the Federal Government would continue to support the education sector to empower the youth. ‘’Let me reiterate that university education worldwide is the bedrock of national development and integration. ‘’In terms of access, we have continued to create room for large number of qualified candidates seeking admission into universities,’’ he said. Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, said a total of 8,875 students graduated from 12 faculties for the 2012, 2013 and 2014 academic sessions. He said that out of the number, 3,638 graduated with first degrees, 1,823 graduated with post graduate diploma, 3,146 had Masters degrees, while the remaining 84 were Ph.Ds. The university also conferred emeritus professorships on five distinguished academics for their contributions to the growth and development of intellectualism in the university. http://www.today.ng/news/fg-approves-the-establishment-of-two-specialised-universities/ |
Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has expressed confidence in the leadership of the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari advising him not to take Nigerians for granted inadministering the country from May 29. Obasanjo expressed the confidence while hosting a delegation of South West Women Leaders under the leadership of the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief (Mrs) Alaba Lawson, at his Hilltop Mansion in Abeokuta, yesterday. The former leader urged Buhari to be as honest as possible with Nigerians in leading the country, describing Nigerians as clever beings that could not be deceived. Obasanjo told his guests that he believed in the political acumen of the president-elect in leading Nigeria aright stressing that Buhari is not a novice in governance. He however appealed to Nigerians to pray for the success of the incoming administration and also cooperate with the new government. Obasanjo noted that the country had been poorly governed in the last eight years saying it would take time for Buhari’s government to correct the anomalies, encouraging him not to be frightened by the situation. Obasanjo submitted that having been Head of State between 1984 and 1985 Buhari has the experience in terms of administering the country. “When I came in 1999, there was no fuel and power. The situation was like this and I thought we have put that one behind us. The man that is coming on board has a lot of experience in terms of governance. “He is not a green horn. We have both worked together in administering, then as a military Head of State and we did it well. Nigerians need to exercise patience because what have been destroyed in eight years cannot be re-build in a day. “Let’s give him time. Let’s pray for him and let’s cooperate with him. We are all concerned about the present situation of Nigeria. The expectation is very high but at the same time, there is a lot of goodwill internally and externally for the in-coming government. “Once the in-coming administration realises this and take every step, particularly in the first three months, when people will be watching and counting, I think for me, we will get there.” The former president further stated that with Buhari at the helm of affairs of the nation, the citizens according to him would have a new dawn. http://leadership.ng/news/435866/i-believe-in-buharis-leadership-obasanjo |

Untold story about how professional Nigerian footballer who died about three years ago, Rasheed Yekini bade farewell to mother earth has surfaced. The lawyer of the legendary African footballer, Jubril Olanrewaju Mohamed, in a new interview with Premium Times has revealed that the family of the deceased soccer star are fighting over the properties of the dead footballer. This is despite the fact that the late striker had willed all his estates to his two daughters (Yemisi and Mariam) who are ages 20 and 15 respectively. The lawyer recounted how it has been a hassle keeping Yekini’s estate for the rightful owners — his two daughters. He also made it known that the tragic death of the football star involves foul play and that justice has by no means been served. Below are excerpts from the interview: Can you tell us a little about you? Jubril Olanrewaju Mohamed is my name; I was the lawyer to Late Rasheed Yekini and counsel to his estate. How has the task of keeping Yekini’s estate being for you? It has been a challenging time in the sense that I had to ensure that the estate he left behind is not taken away from the beneficiaries he left behind, that is his two children. They are grown up children and to ensure that they are psychologically stable has been challenging. There are talks that Yekini had more than two children. Has there been any claim from anywhere else? A Togolese lady came with a three-year old girl eight days after his death claiming that Yekini was the father of the child. The mother (Yekini’s mum) accepted and other members of the family. Yekini actually confessed to the relationship and one and half years after the relationship was over she came back saying she was pregnant. It even caused misunderstanding between him and his mum because he refused to accept the child but his mother accepted saying the more the merrier. We asked her to do a DNA after she came back but up till now we haven’t ascertain the authenticity of the child’s paternity. So back to Yekini’s estate, we hear all is not well as regards that.. The family called a number of times asking that the properties be sold and shared among themselves. I however told them their suggestion was unlawful, even Islamically because he had children and a mother. He (Yekini) gave his mother some property and it would be wrong of me to take it away from her. Also the rest of his property, he gave no instructions on how to do deal with it. His mansion in Ibadan is still being maintained and we have looked for an estate manager to help us look for anyone who is interested in the property to lease it because the money you would get from there would be substantial. At the moment the respective mothers are the ones taking care of their children with a little input from me. Yekini has the BQ, the five flats of three bedroom at Ijagbo, then the mansion. Right now however, they (the children) get nothing from the estate as we are still waiting on the lease of the mansion since the mother takes all the proceeds from the other properties. The family members feel they are entitled to whatever comes from the leasing but I have said no, that these two children are basically and primary beneficiary of that estate. They can meet their mother for part of what she is getting from Ijagbo’s property which is massive but as for this one, no way. My jurisdiction is limited to this one mansion because I do not want to stop what Yekini did not stop in his life time. The property would naturally revert back to Yekini’s estate after her demise and according to our traditions, no elderly person wants to be left behind while their child or grandchild dies, so the rent that accrues after her demise becomes that of Yekini’s children. You have fingered foul play in the death of Yekini, do you still maintain such stance? I maintain that stance because of the circumstances surrounding his death. He did not die naturally and I asked some questions on the circumstances leading to his death and they have not been able to provide me with answers. According to the report of his late younger sister who died shortly after he died and was the mastermind of his abduction, she said that morning of May 4, she said they gave him tea because he was tied down because they felt he would escape if they did not tie him down. She said Yekini begged to be released to see me and that he was being smoldered where he was. It was after he took a cup of tea which he requested for, he became restless and started gasping for breath. That was when they took him to a nearby hospital Al-Amin Hospital in Apete, in Ibadan. According to the doctor who attended to him, Yekini was virtually dead when he was brought in because the pulse was actually very feeble before he could do anything the man was gone. So I wanted to see those guys who took him away and ask them what his treatment plan was because you can’t die in such circumstances and it would not raise suspicion. By the laws in Lagos state, there would have been an inquest into his death; the coroner should have been brought in to verify the cause of his death. That was what I was asking for. The family members might have had genuine reasons for doing what they did and I was not out to persecute them. I just wanted to know the cause of Yekini’s death. Just like what happened to Michael Jackson, there was an inquest. If it were a nobody now, we could just overlook such things but a whole Rasheed Yekini was taken to the native doctor forcefully and he died there and we did not know the cause of his death. Do you think you could have done more to avert Yekini’s death? Yes, I wish I did more to keep him safe. I thought the police order was good enough but may be stationing a policeman would have been better. I was disappointed that the police failed to make any arrest and ended up calling it a family affair and saying no one had come to declare their grievances. I asked them if there was a corpse lying in the street would they leave it there because no one came to report? They however were waiting for me to write a petition and I did not do that because I expected the police to bring up the coroner law and find out the cause of death of a man who was kidnapped from his house and later found dead despite an order restraining some people. Finally how are Yekini’s children faring? Yemisi is close to 20 and the other is 15. The 20-year-old is studying at the University of Leicester where she is studying performing arts. The second one is in Osogbo. She will be writing her final year exams soon. Rasheed Yekini was born October 23, 1963 in Kaduna. He died May 4, 2012 in Ibadan. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=822464291140128&substory_index=0&id=123593554360542&refid=8&_ft_=qid.6148205681336908037%3Amf_story_key.1077866720746560658&__tn__=%2As

Thousands of students from Rivers State studying in various universities around the world under the platform of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) have cried out over their monthly allowances that have gone unpaid for over seven months. “Most of us that are recipients of this scholarship are poor children who couldn’t afford the cost of going to higher institutions in Nigeria, but [for] the laudable program which was set up by our Governor,” they said in a statement. They said Governor Rotimi Amaechi offered the scholarships to deserving Rivers State students following a rigorous screening, leading many of them to educational pursuits in such places as Canada, England, Scotland and India. The students complained that while they have been singing the praises of the government, its failure to remit their allowances has resulted in great suffering for many of them, with most of the beneficiaries being thrown into the streets for unpaid rents. “The worst case scenario, is that some students have been suspended or terminated from their schools for unpaid fees, and this [has hindered] students from completing their studies,” they said. They described the difficulties in trying to reach officials of the RSSDA. “Sometimes, they reply to our emails and numerous calls with no good excuses why we have not been given our allowances, and most times they don’t even reply or answer our calls,” the statement said. “This is an issue of pure neglect by our government who have failed us at this critical time, they just brought us here several miles away from our poor parents and decided to dump us. Our poor parents back home who have been communicated the situation at hand are deeply worried about our well-being and don’t have any powers to help us at all.” They called on Governor Amaechi, the Rivers State Government, the federal government and all other Government bodies to come to their aid before the situation gets too ugly and brings shame to the respected name of Nigeria. saharareporters.com/2015/05/12/rivers-state-scholarship-students-abroad-cry-out-say-state-government-has-neglected-them
