Nigerian wonderkid Kelechi Iheanacho will sign a deal with Manchester City, according to the player's father. Iheanacho was named the best player at the 2013 Under-17 World Cup after scoring six goals, including one in the final, as his country triumphed in the United Arab Emirates. MAN CITY LATEST He has since been linked with moves to Porto and Chelsea in his homeland, but his father, James, has claimed that the Etihad Stadium will be his next destination. "As I am talking to you, I have chosen in my mind that Kelechi is going to Manchester United," he told Super Sport's Monday Night Football, before appearing to correct himself: "I have told you that he is going to Manchester City." He later confirmed to MTNFootball.com that the player's family made a joint decision on where he would play in a meeting on Monday night: "We prayed [Monday] and after due consultations with family members, we came up with Manchester City believing he has a future there. That is where he will be uplifted." The young striker had been declared missing by his father on Friday after he had left his home in Owerri without alerting his family, but returned early on Monday morning before a decision on his future was made. James has been integral in his son's fledgling career, with rumours that he had valued the starlet at €1 million, but he has denied the claims: "No, those people are my enemies. I never said that." Several newspapers report that the African country of Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims. The Angolan Minister of Culture, Rosa Cruz e Silva was quoted by news agencies and Angola newspapers as saying, “The process of legalisation of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human rights, their mosques would be closed until further notice.” As part of the ban, the Angolan government ordered the demolition of the mosques in the country. According to the official, such a decision became the latest in a series of attempts to ban “illegal” sects in the country. This statement by Silva was made during her appearance last week at the 6th Commission of the National Assembly. The minister says that the move became necessary in order to fight the emergence of congregations whose worshipping is contradictory to the customs of Angola culture. The measure concerns not only Islam – many other not legalized faiths will face closure of their houses of worship. The list of the banned sects published by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in the Angolan newspaper ‘Jornal de Angola’ contains all the sects, which are not allowed to conduct worship. “In addition, we also have a long list of more than a thousand legalization applications,” the official stated. Commenting on the issue, Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said, “This is the final end of Islamic influence in our country.” SOURCE: http://www.informationng.com/2013/11/unbelievable-angola-bans-islam-sets-to-demolish-mosques.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

Seven years after the launch of its last console in the U.S., the PlayStation 4 has hit stores. One million units of the PS4 were sold during the first day it became available in North America, Sony announced on Sunday. The PS3, by comparison, had received a more limited launch in the U.S. in 2006 and received initially unfavorable press as it went head-to-head with the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii during that holiday season. “Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29,” said Sony Computer Entertainment’s president and group CEO Andrew House in a statement touting the PS4 sales figure. “We are extremely grateful for the passion of PlayStation fans and thank them for their continued support.” Sony says that 30 games will be available for the console, priced at $399 at launch, by the end of 2013. The company has stated that it expects 5 million units of the PS4 to be sold in North America by March 2014, Bloomberg reported. Microsoft’s new console the Xbox One, with a price tag of $499, hits stores on Nov. 22. Blatter says: “On behalf of the international football family, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to the team (Golden Eaglets)” The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) on Wednesday hailed the victorious Golden Eaglets for their triumph at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. A statement from Ademola Olajire, the Assistant Director (Media), Nigeria Football Association (NFA) in Abuja, said FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, sent a letter describing the Golden Eaglets as worthy winners. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Golden Eaglets won their record fourth U-17 World Cup title at the 2013 edition of the tournament which was held from Oct. 17 to Nov. 8. Nigeria took the title following a 3-0 defeat of Mexico who they had earlier beaten 6-1 in the preliminary stage. The statement said the letter was addressed to NFA President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari. “The FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013 lived up to all its promises with some thrilling matches, fantastic goals, incredible emotions and unbelievable twists and turns. “All of these combined to keep the fans on the edges of their seats on the final day in Abu Dhabi last Friday. “In the end, the Nigeria U-17 team saw off the challenge of their Mexican counterparts to claim an unprecedented fourth world title following previous triumphs in 1985, 1993 and 2007. “On behalf of the international football family, I would like to extend our warmest congratulations to the team. “I also want to congratulate their coach and the entire technical, administrative and medical team, and to all your fans,’’ Blatter said. Blatter observed that the team’s victory was a product of hard work and professionalism. “Victories such as these are always based on hard work, professionalism, and attention to detail, as well as passion and a love for the game. “I have no doubt that all of these bode well for a very bright future, and wish you continued success with your work in the years to come,’’ FIFA president said. Meanwhile the world football governing body has invited Eaglet players, Kelechi Iheanacho and Dele Alampasu to the FIFA Ballon D’or gala in Zurich on Jan. 13, 2014. http://premiumtimesng.com/sports/149537-u-17-world-cup-fifa-hails-golden-eaglets.html |
The national Chairman of the new Peoples Democratic Party, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, today resigned his position as chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). Mr. Baraje stated that he decided to leave the board position in order to devote more time to managing the nPDP and to avoid any scheme to use his NRC chairmanship to blackmail or embarrass him in future. Mr. Baraje added that he no longer had confidence in the leadership of the PDP. His decision was conveyed in what was titled, “A Letter of Gratitude and Resignation of Appointment as Chairman, Nigeria Railway Corporation Governing Board.” The letter was addressed to Anyim Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Personally signed by Mr. Baraje, the letter stated: “I hasten to express my sincere gratitude to His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, through your good office for the confidence he placed in my ability to have appointed me to such an exalted position as Chairman, Nigeria Railway Corporation. “His Excellency, Mr. President, will recall that this appointment came from his discretion in allotting some positions to our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, it is no longer news that there is an ongoing disagreement in principle between some top stakeholders of our party of which I am among on the one hand and the current leadership of the party on the other. This quagmire has upturned my belief in the present leadership of our great party and has consequently made my continued stay as the Chairman, Nigeria Railway Corporation Governing Board uncomfortable. “Realizing that the position of the Nigeria Railway Corporation Chairmanship was allocated to the party and of which I am supposed to symbolize, I would appreciate if your good office could please convey to His Excellency, Mr. President, of my intention to relinquish this position with immediate effect because I can no longer represent the interest of the party whose leadership I no longer believe in.” |
The crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, took a new twist Monday as the national leadership slammed an indefinite suspension on its former National Secretary, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and three other leaders of the New Peoples Democratic Party, nDPD, and ordered their investigation, for alleged anti-party activities. The others whose suspension was announced by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh at a press conference in Abuja, were a former acting National Chairman of the party, Kawu Baraje, a former Deputy National Chairman, Sam Sam Jaja and a former senator and ambassador from Jigawa State, Ibrahim Kazaure. Mr. Baraje is the National Chairman of the nPDP, while Mr. Jaja is his deputy and Mr. Oyinlola, the National Secretary. But Mr. Baraje and his colleagues have, through their faction, described their suspension as the greatest joke of the century, adding that it was not only an abuse of the party constitution, but also the court process, which reinstated Mr. Oyinlola as National Secretary. While announcing the decision of the party to suspend the four persons, Mr. Metuh said preliminary hearings conducted in line with the PDP Constitution showed that they had breached Section 58 (1) (b), (g), (h) and (i) of the document. Section 58 (1) says, “Subject to the provision of this constitution, the party shall have power to discipline any member who (b) commits any breach of the party’s constitution and or manifesto; (g) engages in disorderly conduct at meetings or rallies or at any party function; (h) engages in any conduct likely to cause disaffection among members of the party or is likely to disrupt the peaceful, lawful and efficient conduct of the business of the party; (i) engages in unauthorised publicity of disputes within the party or create a parallel party organ at any level. The PDP spokesperson added that they are to be referred to the party’s National Disciplinary Committee, NDC, inaugurated two weeks ago by the National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, for further investigation. The Committee is headed by Second Republic Transport Minister, Umaru Dikko, a personal friend of Mr. Tukur. He described the suspended persons as the pillars behind the formation of the nPDP, also called Kawu Baraje faction, and warned members of the ruling party across the country to avoid any dealings with them. The action of the party is believed to be a move at preventing Mr. Oyinlola’s reinstatement as National Secretary as ordered by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, last Thursday. He was sacked from the position by the Federal High Court, Abuja last January 11. He, however, approached the Court of Appeal, which delivered judgement last week. Prior to the announcement of the suspension order on Monday, security had been beefed up around the party’s national secretariat in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, allegedly to stop Mr. Oyinlola from resuming as secretary. Mr. Oyinlola, a former governor of Osun State, is the National Secretary of the nPDP, which was floated by a former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, seven governors and some members of the National Assembly, elected on the platform of the PDP. The governors are Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Chibuike Amaechi (Rivers) and Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara). Reacting to the suspension, the faction in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chukwuemeka Eze, said it was the greatest joke of the century, adding that Mr. Tukur and the NWC members had exposed themselves as champions of undemocratic acts and greatest enemies of the party. In September, few days after the birth of the Baraje faction, Mr. Oyinlola and 12 members of the PDP, who attended a rally he organised in his home town, Okuku in Osun State, were suspended by the state chapter of the party. It was not clear why the seven governors belonging to the splinter group, also called G7 Governors and its other senior members of the Baraje faction, were not suspended. It said, “With this greatest joke of the century, Tukur and his funny NWC have only succeeded in exposing themselves not only as champion of undemocratic acts but the greatest enemies of PDP as all their actions are all geared at ensuring that peace eludes the party. “Nigerians can now understand why we are hell bent of ensuring that these military mentally inclined men are removed from our political psyche if we are to enrich and uplift our democratic credentials.” The faction said the uncivilized action was not acceptable to its members, insisting that Mr. Oyinlola “must be reinstated as a matter of urgency as ordered by the Appeal Court as the national Secretary.” It also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and any other government agency not to entertain any document or letter from PDP without the authorization of Mr. Oyinlola in view of the fact that he was the incumbent National Secretary of the party fully recognized and sanctioned by a credible Court. It also urged “all good members of PDP to remain calm, steadfast and focused as we fight the illegality which Tukur and his people represent as the task to strengthen and rebuild our party is a task that we must conclude.” Only on Sunday night, the governors expressed confidence that Mr Oyinlola would be reinstated as the national secretary of the party. Mr. Aliyu, who spoke to journalists after a meeting of the group at the Kano State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja, said its members were happy with the court order reinstating Mr. Oyinlola’s as the National Secretary of the PDP because it fell in line with the reforms they were canvassing. “We look forward to resolution and future resolution of the matter,” the Niger State Governor said. Apart from sealing the group’s national secretariat in Maitama District of Abuja, two previous meetings of the governors had been disrupted by the police. Several peace meetings held to resolve the crisis in the ruling party had yielded no fruit. The governors met on two occasions with President Goodluck Jonathan and some senior members of the party at the Presidential Villa. Before then, the Elders Committee of the PDP led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, had also waded into the crisis. Mr. Eze had told PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday that the meeting conveyed that night was meant to articulate the position of the group in anticipation of its meeting with Mr. Jonathan this week. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/149436-suspension-greatest-joke-century-oyinlola-baraje-others.html |
Only the conference room of the hotel was sealed-off. Scores of armed police officers, on Tuesday sealed off a Nicon Luxury hotel conference room where an anti-corruption conference was planned. The anti-corruption conference was planned by an organization promoted by former House of Representatives member turned anti-corruption campaigner, Dino Melaye. The police arrived in the early hours of the day with combat officers, including anti-terrorism squads, to carry out the seal-off of only the conference room the anti-corruption campaigners rented for the conference. It is still unclear why the conference room was sealed. The police authority responsible for Abuja, the FCT Command, denied ordering the operation. “I am not aware of it,” the spokesperson of the command, Altine Daniel, said. But Mr. Melaye believes the seal-off was ordered by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar. “The hotel management said the police officers brought an order from the IG,” he said. The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police headquarters, Frank Mba, is yet to respond to inquiries. “We will never give up, the conference must go on,” Mr. Melaye said. “We already know that when you fight corruption, corruption fights back.” The former lawmaker has, recently, had a recurring battle with the police over anti-corruption protests including that organised to demand the removal and prosecution of Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, over the N255 million armoured car scandal. Mr. Melaye was briefly arrested, then released, during the protest. SOURCE: http://premiumtimesng.com/news/149445-breaking-police-seal-dino-melayes-anti-corruption-conference.html

Tacloban, Philippines: Emily Sagalis cried tears of joy after giving birth to a "miracle" girl in a typhoon- ravaged Philippine city, then named the baby after her mother who went missing in the storm. The girl was born Monday in a destroyed airport compound that was turned into a makeshift medical centre, with her bed a piece of dirty plywood resting amid dirt, broken glass, twisted metal, nails and other debris. "She is so beautiful. I will name her Bea Joy in honour of my mother, Beatriz," Sagalis, 21, whispered shortly after giving birth. Sagalis said her mother was swept away when giant waves generated by Super Typhoon Haiyan surged into their home near Tacloban city, the capital of Leyte province which was one of the worst-hit areas, and she has not been seen since. More than 10,000 people are believed to have died in Leyte, and many hundreds on other islands across the central Philippines, which would make Haiyan the country's worst recorded natural disaster. But, in the most tragic of circumstances, Bea Joy restarted the cycle of life. "She is my miracle. I had thought I would die with her still inside me when high waves came and took us all away," she said, as her teary-eyed husband, Jobert, clasped the baby and a volunteer held an IV drip above them. The husband said the first wave that came carried their wooden home in the coastal town of San Jose many metres inland, washing all of the family outside. He said the entire community had been washed away, with the once picturesque area replaced by rubble and the bloated remains of people and animals. "We are supposed to be celebrating today, but we are also mourning our dead," Jobert said. He said it was God's will that he found his wife floating amongst the debris. They were carried away for what felt like hours until the water subsided, and they found themselves sheltering in a school building where other mud-soaked and injured survivors had huddled. The couple and their surviving neighbours subsisted there until Monday morning only on bottles of water they found among the debris. Jobert said he knew that his wife was about to give birth any day, but no help or aid had come. "She began labour at 5:00 am (Monday) so we had to walk several kilometres before a truck driver hitched us a ride," he said. The young military doctor who attended to her, Captain Victoriano Sambale, said the new mother had already broken her waters by the time the couple stepped inside the building, and then developed bleeding during the delivery. "This is the first time we have delivered a baby here. The baby is fine and we have managed to stop the bleeding of the mother," he said. However, he cautioned doctors were extremely concerned about potential infections that could easily be caught amid the unsterile conditions, with the medical team almost powerless now to help her. "Definitely the mother is still in danger from infection and sepsis (septicemia). So we need to give her intravenous antibiotics. Unfortunately we ran out of even the oral antibiotics yesterday," Sambale said. SOURCE: m.ndtv.com/article/world/miracle-baby-born-in-philippines-typhoon-rubble-444400 |
The organisers said the suspension was for security reasons. Nigerian students planning to write qualifying examinations into colleges and universities abroad should start seeking other alternatives as Education Testing Services, ETS, has suspended both the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) in Nigeria “due to security concerns.” ETS is the world’s largest private nonprofit educational testing and assessment organization. It conducts examinations in almost all the countries of the world. In a terse statement dated November 7, published on its website, ETS said both examinations have been suspended indefinitely in Nigeria. “Due to security concerns in Nigeria, GRE® and TOEFL® testing in the country has been suspended for an indefinite period. Candidates who have appointments to take the TOEFL or GRE Tests will be contacted by ETS to process a refund.” The organisation did not say the specific security threats it has come under. But the organisation may be acting proactively in the face of repeated attacks of educational institutions by suspected members of the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram. The GRE is a standardized test that is required for admission for graduate (Post-graduate) courses in the United States and business programmes, especially Master in Business Administration (MBA) worldwide. The TOEFL is a test meant to test the English Language proficiency of non-native English language speakers wishing to enroll in United States universities and other English speaking universities and courses around the world. It is with deep regret that we officially announce the departure of recording artist Wande Ojosipe, popularly known as Wande Coal, from Mavin Records due to irreconcilable differences. Over the past few months, Mavin Records has made a concerted move to consolidate its position in the Nigerian music industry. Mavin has pursued a renewed ethos to raise its standards of quality and professionalism to a world-class level. Wande’s vision has not aligned with ours and a few months ago all parties mutually agreed that a separation would be the best course of action. Legal parties on both sides have spent the past six months trying to reach an amicable solution in terms of musical property rights. However the decision by Wande Coal to release ‘Baby Face’ purportedly as his own material is a direct breach of intellectual property law and compelled an immediate clarification on our part. Both Mavin Records and Wande Coal have enjoyed a remarkable run in the course of their working relationship. It is unfortunate that conflicting priorities contributed to the premature curtailment of a hitherto fruitful accord. Mavin Records reaffirms its goal to constantly provide high quality music to our fans and introduce new and exciting talent into the industry. We wish Wande Coal the best of luck in all his future endeavours." Signed Management Mavin Records Ltd SOURCE: www.tayotv.net/2013/11/press-release-wande-coal-officially.html?m=1
