Politics / Railways: Jonathan Lacked Vision –obasanjo by Surulere2: 11:58am On Jul 29, 2015
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday slammed ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for lacking vision in the rehabilitation of the railways.

He based his criticism on the fact that the railway lines were obsolete as they were constructed in 1903 and could not match the modern global trends.

The Jonathan administration embarked on the rehabilitation of the railway system with a view of overhauling the sector which had decayed for years and abandoned by previous governments.

“For what reason should anybody in his right senses in Nigeria of today believe that rehabilitating the railway system which was completed in 1903 to carry three million tonnes of goods is what we need today,” he said.

The former president who spoke during a television programme monitored yesterday said there was no earthly reason why the rehabilitated railway system of Nigeria today could serve Nigerians

Obasanjo, who noted that the system was divided into two, Eastern and Western, lamented that the latter caused a whooping $8.3 billion Dollars

According to him, ‘if Nigeria would achieve the vision 20-20-20, we would need a first class land, water and air transportation, and good land transportation can only be railway and roads.

Politics / We Regret N’ Assembly Crisis – APC by Surulere2: 10:18am On Jul 29, 2015
The All Progressives Congress on Tuesday expressed regret over the leadership tussle in the National Assembly.

It also commended the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and his colleagues for what it called their sense of patriotism in their handling of the situation in the House.

The National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said this at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

He was reacting to the resolution of the crisis in the House of Representatives and the crisis in the Senate.

According to him, though the APC was uncomfortable with the crisis, it noted that the emanating issues were part of the country’s growing democracy.

Odigie-Oyegun said, “I want to commend the Speaker and his colleagues for their sense of patriotism. It is my hope and expectation that the wounds will now be totally healed and the APC family will now reunite fully as one.”

To Nigerians, Odigie-Oyegun said, “I have already offered our regrets. This is part of growing. We are new in government and we are a democratic and progressive movement.

“We are in the process of welding all the various tendencies into one and today we have scored one major victory and I can assure the country that the party has begun the process of healing all the wounds and becoming one strong force.

“We are moving from being a movement to being a strong political party that will back the President for the good of the entire country.”

Referring to the crisis in the Senate, Odigie-Oyegun said, “The Senate is a different level and a different situation. I think the way we are going to handle the situation will be totally different. But at the end of the day even the Senate issue will be sorted out too.”

Politics / Committee Calls For Review Of Lagos Lgs’ Administration by Surulere2: 4:59pm On Jul 24, 2015
The Committee on Reformation of Local Government administration in Lagos State on Friday called for a review of the functions, revenue and laws regulating the operations of Local Government in the State.

Mr Nurudeen Ojora-Adejiyan, Chairman of the committee, made the call while submitting its report to Mrs Shade Jaji, Lagos State Head of Service, in Ikeja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that on June 29, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, inaugurated the committee to address the administrative governance structure and service delivery processes in LGAs across the state, for better grassroots service delivery.

The committee was given a deadline of two-weeks to submit its report.

Ojora-Adejiyan also called for a functional template to assess the performance of LGs, based on available resources, standardisation of departments and sanctions on officials and LG personnel involved in fraudulent practices.

Ojora-Adejiyan said, ”The committee cutting edge consultations aimed at ensuring that inputs of critical stakeholders are enlisted.

”We made startling findings that shows that the LG system has become a shadow of itself, grappling with structural, funding and administrative problems.

”It was discovered that there had been inadequate community participation in LG affairs and this has created a huge service gap with adverse effects on its service delivery capacity to the people.

”We, however, recommend a review of the LG laws, funding, as well as involving Community Development Associations and other stakeholders in the planning and execution of policies.

”We also recommend that there should be no mass transfer of LG personnel to the State Service.

”The welfare package of Obas and Chiefs should also be enhanced for more responsive participation in LG revenue mobilization, security and other auxiliary functions.”

While receiving the report on behalf of the Governor, Jaji thanked the committee for submitting its report promptly.

”His Excellency understood the position of the Local Government in governance and the reformation is critical for development and progress.

”He will critically look at your recommendations and ensure prompt implementation for the benefit of the people of Lagos State, ” she said.

I dialed my mother's number on my wife's phone and found out she saved it as 'old witch". Granted my mother has her attitude but is it fair to save her name like that? I am thinking of creating a storm because I am really upset.

Politics / NNPC, Engine Room Of Corruption —saraki by Surulere2: 3:23pm On Jul 24, 2015
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Thursday, described the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation as the engine room of corruption, lamenting that none of the perpetrators of illegal deals in the corporation had so far been apprehended and brought to justice.

He, therefore, challenged the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress to assist the Federal Government to fight corruption by encouraging their members in the oil and gas sector to expose those behind subsidy scam in the country.

Saraki who stated this while addressing the leadership of the NLC led by its President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, in his office, asked the oil and gas workers to reveal the identities of subsidy thieves and watch whether they would be protected or not.

He said, “I think we need the cooperation of our workers who know it all. They see it happen and when you look at the anti-corruption agencies, with all due respect, you will find out that 80 per cent of some of the cases are cases at the state level.

“You hardly see where people who are the real engine room – which is the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation – where most of these corruption cases on oil are, being put on trial.”

He said it was time workers helped the government succeed to decisively tackle corruption through collective efforts.

Saraki noted that President Muhammadu Buhari had made it clear that his administration would fight corruption to its logical end, stressing that the Senate had on its part started the process by engaging the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission.

He also said that the upper chamber would soon interact with the management of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other anti-graft agencies in order to fashion out a collective to tackle the menace of corruption.

Saraki assured Nigerians that the Senate under his watch would fight corruption with a view to blocking leakages and create gainful employment.

He said, “We in the 8th Senate have said there will be zero tolerance for corruption. Corruption is one issue slowing down development and some of the problems we are tackling.

“Whether you talk about our refineries not working, you talk of the issue of fuel subsidy, you talk about the high cost of governance, everything you talked about comes back to this issue of corruption and I think it is time for all of us, those of us in the National Assembly, the Executive and the workers to show serious commitment.

“This should not be a headline-grabbing approach because at the end of the day, you are workers, when you talk about oil theft, we have Nigerian workers at the terminals who surely must know when this thing is going on.

“Everywhere that there is corruption, some workers are there either participating or observing. We now have a great opportunity to win the war against corruption because we have a leadership led by President Muhammadu Buhari that we believe has the political will to do the right thing”

He said the excuses of Nigerian workers that when they blow the whistle on corrupt practices nothing would be done because the system is corrupt right from the top, was No longer tenable because the current administration in the country has the political will to deal with the scourge.

Saraki said, “We are assuring you that at the executive side, we have elected the President that will do it well. I am making the commitment on behalf of the National Assembly and myself that we are committed to fighting corruption.”

Wabba lamented the current high cost of governance coupled with the high exchange rate which according to him was having serious negative impact on the lives of workers.

Wabba said that the reduction of salaries announced by the President, the Vice-President and some state governors was not the solution to the problem of high cost of governance in the country.

The NLC President also called for a more transparent execution of the National Assembly annual budget.

He recalled that the budget for the National Assembly for 2011 was shrouded in secrecy because the lawmakers used their influence to move it into the first line charge in the Federation Account.
