Whether in a new construction or for retrofitting, the appropriate amount, quality, and distribution of light and electrical connections is the first step in providing an efficient lighting/electricity system.

How much light is needed, the appropriate quality, where is it needed, the positioning of electrical appliances for the building all play vital roles in the effective installation and efficiency of your building energy consumption. This is because the energy consumed by lighting alone can be as high as 37%.

Different degrees and arrangement of lighting best serve different kinds of building facilities. Corporate offices often require about 300-500 lux (unit for luminance) while shopping malls can be up to 1000 lux to serve a wider scope.

Because of their longer life-span (50,000 to 100,000 hours), LED lights continue to be the preferred choice for most building projects. And when pre-designed along with smart wiring and appliance sectioning, a building’s energy consumption can be reduced by as much as 35%.

At Swave Energem, we design, install and maintain Lighting and electrical wiring systems for buildings and the likes with the sole aim to reduce your energy consumption and energy expenses, true to the Swave mission. We do retrofits too. Our clients include Chevron, Believers’ LoveWorld Inc, and Mainserve Nigeria Ltd.

Many of the above points are well-known facts, solar is quite popular in Nigeria. Then why is adoption lagging?

Exactly the purpose for this thread- to share thoughts, tips and solutions for cheaper, sustainable alternative electricity.

You see, alternative energy, albeit solar generation works if we would internalize these key points:

1) Alternative generation is a mindset
2) Alternative generation is a plan
3) Alternative generation is the future.

Having these at back of mind, like the Dangote does, is vital to any successful alternative energy strategy. And reliable energy, is one key to sustainable competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Your thoughts, anybody?
BusinessRe: Why you don't need another generator- an expose on solar energy. by Swave4you(op):
Going further,

This thread is not meant to discredit the diesel generator, but as stated earlier, we're looking for cheaper and cleaner alternatives to powering our daily operations, as the rest of the world is.

Random calculations:

If I spend N600,000 per month on diesel (most actually spend more), this means N7.2million in one year excluding maintenance. This means in 10 years I would have spent over N70million in just fueling. If I take the initiative and invest same N7.2million in solar energy once off and replace my battery bank(with say 20% of initial costs) every 4 years, in the same 10 years, I would have spent only N11.4million on electricity. shocked

Even if I replaced batteries every 2 years (for budget installations), I would be doing a total of N14.2million, still a far cry from N70million.

I can only imagine how much Dangote is saving with gas!

I am not Homophobic, and honestly have no problem with anybody's sexual orientation. Like i have said before, whatever happens in another person's bedroom is not my business, and as long as they keep their hands to themselves and not come near me, then we are cool with each other.

But taking it to this level like the guy in the picture, is even difficult for me who usually is a free thinker to stomach. I don't even know where to start from, is it the feminine dressing?the eyelashes like a girl? but the one that even got me is the bleaching.

Since there are men like this in Nigeria now, we men should endeavour to start asking Nigeria women for their pictures as young girls now. The 7th Picture got me laughing, look at the guy on phone eyes, PURE SHOCK.
Shock not, my brother.
He's only fulfilling nature while contradicting what he intends to portray.

Business To BusinessRe: Proper Led Lighting And Electrical Wiring For Your Building Project And Facility by Swave4you(op): 8:11am On Jul 11, 2016
Good morning all, how have you been?

Did you know the electrical wiring/design of your building or facility also affects the amount you spend on energy? Please read on!

Electricity is a safe and convenient source of energy for heat, light and power in your home, provided it is distributed in correctly sized and properly protected conductors. Good wiring systems are safe and energy-efficient.

Because of their convenience, households have accumulated many electrical appliances. While these labor-saving devices are helpful in the home, property owners often fail to give proper attention to the wiring system that serves them. In our desire to reduce human work loads, we very often overwork the electrical home wiring system and its control devices. Energy-efficient appliances should always be served by good wiring systems.

Many older homes and service buildings are not adequately wired to serve today's electrical loads. Some new homes fall into this category, too. The safety of the system depends first on how well you have planned the safety valves... your electrical fuses and/or your circuit breakers. It also depends upon the care taken by the electrician in the placement of electric cables. It is especially important that circuit conductors that carry near-capacity current are on top of attic insulation so that heat generated within cable jackets will not be trapped. Where a circuit carries near-full load (90 to 100 percent of rated capacity) for long periods of time and heat is trapped, the conductor insulation could deteriorate.

Solutions are:

Avoid covering conductors with insulation.
Derate circuit amperage by using next lower size fuse or breaker (for instance, fusing a No. 12 conductor with 15 amp protection and adding additional circuit capacity as needed).

Any system should avoid excessive voltage drop, wasted energy and overheated wires. You need not have a fire or an appliance failure to discover overloaded circuits, and you need not be an expert to determine whether your home wiring system needs attention. Look for symptoms of poor wiring:

Fuses blow or circuit breakers trip often.
Too few switches, outlets and lights.
Extension cords frequently used.
Lights dim and TV picture shrinks when refrigerator or other equipment starts.
Toaster and electric iron heat slowly.

In new home construction, the electrical contractor should identify each circuit and the size of conductors used should correspond with fuse size. The contractor should attach this record to the inside of the service entrance panel with each circuit numbered, identified and described. No one should accept a new wiring system without such a record. If your home wiring circuits are not so identified, the time required to make up such a record will be saved many times over as fuse replacements, fixture alterations and other repairs become necessary. Consult an electrician, if necessary, to determine the exact size of circuit wiring to be sure that all circuits are properly protected against overloads.

When you "overfuse" or remove all protection, as with a penny behind a fuse, heavily loaded wires overheat. Insulation hardens and flakes off, with current-carrying conductors becoming bare in spots. Wires may then heat enough to burn dust, wood, paint, etc., causing a serious home fire. Proper fusing protects against such hazards. For 115-volt circuits, the Type-S plug, tamper-resistant fuse is a logical, economical protective device. It is recommended by the latest edition of the National Electrical Code as a replacement; it is required in new homes where fuse panels are used.

BusinessWhy you don't need another generator- an expose on solar energy. by Swave4you(op):
Hello there,

This thread is a clarion call, another response to rising costs of power and attempts at the way forward for us, business people in Nigeria. Do add your comments, feedback as we explore thoughts, tips and pathways to energy self-reliance.

It is a given that the average business in Nigeria spends about 30-45% of its revenue on power and this runs into several millions of naira every year. This often plays out as concurrent PHCN and diesel generation.

I still agree that self-generation, at least 90% is the way forward for now, till we get PHCN right. However self-generation at what cost?
There are many ways to self-generate reliable electricity, from diesel to coal, wind, gas, solar and biomass. And forward-looking companies like the Dangote group are already leading the way with gas.

Investing in gas generation like hydro-electricity though, is still somewhat capital-intensive and highly regulated compared to other reliable sources of clean energy.

For this reason, we will discuss solar energy as an accessible, reliable and economically viable energy source for any kind of enterprise in Nigeria at the moment. As other sources become more commercially viable, we will do them justice.

Welcome on board! grin

Business To BusinessRe: Proper Led Lighting And Electrical Wiring For Your Building Project And Facility by Swave4you(op): 11:09pm On Jul 06, 2016
Hello, how was your day? And the holidays?

Now to the final 5 benefits of using LED lights for your building project.

Benefit #11: Low-Voltage

A low-voltage power supply is sufficient for the holiLED illumination, making it easy to use LED lighting in outdoor settings by connecting an external solar-energy source which is a big advantage when it comes to using LED technology in remote or rural areas in Nigeria. Eg your country home.

Benefit #12: Long-Term Cost

Until recently, LEDs were more expensive than fluorescent and compact fluorescent lights, but they are far less expensive than they were a year ago and can provide huge long-tern savings.. While incandescent lights last for 800 to 1500 hours, and fluorescent lights last up to 10,000 hours, LEDs can last up to a whopping 60,000 hours. This can provide substantial savings as a result of fewer replacements needing to be bought.

Benefit #13: Short-Term Cost

As stated above, prices of LED in Nigeria have significantly dropped in the last year. If you used a bulb for just 2 hours a day and paid the national average of N23 per kilowatt-hour, a single 12-watt LED will cost you about N380/year. Comparable CFLs that consume about 14 watts come to N445/year and about N1900/year for 60-watt incandescent in that scenario.

Benefit #14: Noise

Fluorescent tubes are notorious for being noisy, especially if they have been used for a extended amount of time. They tend to give off clicking sounds intermittently, but most annoyingly, they can produce a low buzzing sound. Since fluorescent tubes are often used in offices and working environments, this can be distracting. LEDs do not have this problem and operate silently with no annoying flickering noises.

Benefit #15: Color

Fluorescent lights are infamous for their color profile. While some fluorescent tubes now use a different type of phosphorous powder to produce a warmer color, most fluorescents produce only a cold blue/white light. It is stark and not very welcoming. LEDs on the other hand provide a range of different colors for different purposes and needs. This is what makes LEDs so adaptable. They can be used in almost any environment or lighting situation.

So, there you have it! 15 awesome reasons to switch to/imbibe LED lighting for your home, office or factory. (When was the last time you changed your facility lights?)

Happy holidays! To all the muslima, may the peace of Allah guide us through!

Continuing from yesterday, we're taking the next 5 benefits of LED lighting. Let's go!

Benefit #5: No Emissions

LED illumination produces little infrared light and close to no UV emissions. Because of this, LED lighting is highly suitable not only for goods and materials that are sensitive to heat, but also for illumination of UV sensitive objects or materials from artwork in museums to plastics in a kitchen.

Benefit #6: "Dimmability"

LEDs can be dimmed, resulting in a dynamic control of light, color, flexibility and distribution. Well-designed LED illumination systems can achieve fantastic lighting effects, not only for the eye but also for the mood. LED mood illumination is already being used in airplanes, classrooms and many more locations and we can expect to see a lot more LED mood illumination in our daily lives within the next few years, in homes, offices, hotels, restaurants, etc. Stores with LED lighting sell 30% more merchandise!

Benefit #7: Light Disbursement

LED is designed to focus its light and can be directed to a specific location without the use of an external reflector, achieving higher application efficiency than conventional lighting. Well-designed LED illumination systems are able to deliver light more efficiently to the desired location.

Benefit #8: Instant Lighting

LEDs provide instant light and illumination; they brighten up when powered on, which has great advantages for infrastructure projects such as traffic and signal lights. LEDs work when an electrical current is passed through them - no flickering. In contrast, fluorescent lights don’t provide optimum illumination levels until they have been running for a few minutes and flicker when switched on.

Benefit #9: Frequent Switching

LED lights can switch off and on frequently and without affecting the LED’s lifetime or light emission, unlike traditional lighting that may take several seconds to reach full brightness. Also, frequent on/off switching of traditional bulbs drastically reduces operational life expectancy.

Benefit #10: Low-Voltage

A low-voltage power supply is sufficient for LED illumination, making it easy to use LED lighting in outdoor settings by connecting an external solar-energy source which is a big advantage when it comes to using LED technology in remote or rural areas.

Good morning esteemed energy user,

How are you doing today?

Let’s look at the 15 benefits of LED lighting.

Benefit #1: Long Lifetime

Long lifetime stands out as the number one benefit of LED lights. LED bulbs and diodes have an outstanding operational lifetime expectation of up to 11 years of continuous operation, or 22 years at 50% operation. If you leave a LED fixture on for 8 hours per day it would take around 20 years before you’d have to replace the LED bulb. Lighting diodes emit lower output levels over a very long period of time and become less bright, while LEDs maintain their original brightness throughout their lifespan.

Benefit #2: Efficiency

LEDs consume far less power than fluorescent tubes. Simply put, LEDs use less electricity, with an estimated energy efficiency of 80%-90% when compared to traditional lighting and conventional light bulbs. This means that about 80% of the electrical energy is converted to light, while 20% is lost and converted into heat. Because of the long lifespan of LED lights, the maintenance work is significantly less, meaning you’ll see big energy savings.

Benefit #3: Eco-friendly

LED lights contain no toxic materials and are 100% recyclable; they’ll help you reduce your carbon footprint. One LED light bulb can save material and production of 25 incandescent light bulbs.

Benefit #4: Durability

Because LEDs are not made of glass and are hollow inside, they are far less fragile than both fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. This makes them much more durable, less likely to be inoperable due to being dropped, and can withstand harsh conditions. Because LED lights are resistant to shock, vibrations and external impacts, they make great outdoor lighting systems for exposure to weather, wind, rain or even external vandalism, traffic related public exposure and construction or manufacturing sites. For freezers and cold rooms, they are the perfect bulbs.

Benefit #5: No Heat

That’s right; no heat. Unlike incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, LEDs are easy to the touch even after they are on for hours so they carry less risk of causing an accidental fire or burn. Also consider the cost it takes to cool the air that other bulbs heat up. A single 100w light bulb costs about N700/month just to cool the heat it produces.

Hello Sir/Ma,

Welcome to Joyful July!

We pray you exceed your goals and desires for this 2nd half of an amazing year. In case you missed our “why we do what we do” message, please find it here

https://www.nairaland.com/3154709/how-reduce-energy-bills-home

Hello Sir/Ma,

Hope you had a splendid day! To further underline the need for efficient lighting, lets first understand Energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency has been defined as the reduction in energy used for a given service or level of activity. These services and activities could include, and not limited to, heating, cooling, lighting, flying, driving etc.

When we embrace energy efficiency, it does not mean we reduce our comfort by cutting down on some of the things we love doing (even though it may help in some cases, that is more of energy conservation which can be a topic for another day).

One of the benefits of energy efficiency is in cost reductions, both in homes and industries. Energy efficiency is the easiest, most affordable and most effective way for families to use energy more wisely and save money on both household expenses and transportation costs.
Energy costs affect a business's bottom line. Businesses that control their energy consumption enjoy lower heating, electricity and transportation costs.

When it comes to lighting a work space, the wattage of a bulb has been seen to be the most important; however that is not correct. What the end-user should consider is the lumens of the bulb. The lumens of a bulb is the total amount of visible light emitted by that bulb. In lay terms, that describes the brightness of the bulb.

One last unit for lighting that we will consider is called the efficacy of the light bulb. This is the ratio of the lumens (the brightness of the bulb) to the electrical power consumed by the bulb in watts. Modern energy efficient bulbs usually have these ratings and units written on their packs. That is enough to educate the end-user on what is being consumed. The types of bulbs with the highest efficacy is the LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs. They also have longevity of use (about 50,000 hours in most cases).

I went through all these explanations just to come to this point of comparisons. An incandescent bulb rated 65 watts may be able to emit the same brightness or lumens as an 11 watt LED bulb, but to power the two bulbs simultaneously for the same time will obviously cost you far more on the incandescent than on the LED. At N 23.6 per kilo watt-hour, it will cost you about N1,534 to run the 65 watt incandescent for 1000 hours while for the LED running for the same amount of time would cost about N 259.6.

Energy efficiency entails planning to include it from the very beginning. However, you could do what is termed a retrofit, by changing old in efficient bulbs and other machines like electric motors and so on.
