Politics / Lightning Sets NNPC Depot On Fire by sweetflame(m): 8:05pm On Oct 31, 2013
Fire on Wednesday engulfed the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation deport in the Pogo area of Minna and consumed one of the storage tanks before it was brought under control

Although the cause of the fire was not made  public by the depot officials, our correspondent gathered that it might have resulted from the lightning that struck the facility during torrential rain at about 8.30pm

Eyewitnesses said the inferno lasted for over four hours before it was put off by the joint efforts of the depot fire fighters and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

It was learnt that the thunder arrestor of the tank that was struck by thunder was stolen few months ago.

Two of the thunder arrestors were said to have been stolen from the depot in February, forcing the management, in a memo to the security firm handling the facility, to ban workers of a contracting company from entering the facility.

Education / Police Foil ASUU Protest In Abuja by sweetflame(m): 7:31am On Oct 31, 2013
Police on Wednesday in Abuja stopped the University of Abuja chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities from staging a peaceful rally.

The lecturers had wanted to protest against the refusal of the Federal Government to honour the 2009 Agreement reached with the union.

An eye witness said the lecturers had gathered in front of the mini campus of the university as early as 8.am before the men and officers from the Gwagwalada Police Division stormed the place.

The Police restricted the varsity teachers to the gate of the school.

The UNIABUJA’s ASUU Chairman, Dr. Clement Chup, confirmed the incidence to our correspondent.

He said, “We actually wanted to stage a peaceful protest when the police came and started firing tear gas. They restricted us to the gate of the mini campus. Initially, we resisted because it is our fundamental right to embark on a peaceful protest. We had planned to move by 10am, but they even prevented us from entering the campus.

“They told us that we were not allowed to protest. Meanwhile, they did not give us any reason. It took time before they were able to disperse us. They were firing tear gas indiscriminately.”

Chup said the union remained committed to the struggle to liberate university education in the country.

ASUU has been on nationwide strike since July 1 to protest the failure of government to honour a 2009 agreement reached with the union.

The union is demanding better condition of service and proper funding of the university system and payment of arrears of a bailout fund.

Politics / Fire Guts Lekan Balogun’s Ibadan House by sweetflame(m): 6:46am On Oct 31, 2013
The Ibadan residence of a prominent politician, Lekan Balogun,  in the  Alarere area of the city was destroyed by fire late Tuesday.

Although no life was lost in the incident, property worth millions of naira was destroyed by the fire.

Eyewitnesses said the fire started on Tuesday evening and would have completely burnt the house but for neighbours’ quick response.

Speaking on the incident on Wednesday, Balogun said he was not at home when the fire started.

He said, “I was not there when the fire started. I got a call from my guard who said the fire was much. I got in touch with the police station in the area. The DPO called the fire brigade. I also got in touch with the fire brigade later.

“I made about 40 phone calls within a short time while the fire raged. Within 10 minutes, everybody in Alarere trooped out with buckets of water. Before the fire brigade came, the people had put off the fire.”

Balogun said he lost everything to the fire but that he was thankful that no life was lost.

“Everything was completely destroyed. Every item of furniture in the living room and other things are badly damaged. The deck was also affected because the irons are now exposed. I can’t really estimate the property I lost to the incident. I thank God that the incident didn’t happen in the night. It would have been very disastrous if not for the neighbours that came to help me. I enjoyed the love of my neighbours. They were simply wonderful. May God be with all of them too,” he said.

Politics / Forbes Names Dangote Africa’s Most Powerful Man by sweetflame(m): 6:27am On Oct 31, 2013
The President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has been named the most powerful man in Africa and 64th in the world by the Forbes magazine.

Dangote, who Forbes says is by far Africa’s richest man with a net worth of $16.1bn as of March 2013, was ranked ahead of the likes of Fifa President, Sepp Blatter (69); Speaker, United States House of Representatives, John Boehner (66); and Founder, Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Mohammed Ibrahim (71).

The 56-year-old, Dangote, whose company is considered one of the most diversified on the list, is currently ranked 43 on the Forbes list of the world’s billionaires with his net worth over time said to be on the rise.

In August, the industrialist had announced plans by the Dangote Group to build a $9bn refinery and petrochemical complex in Nigeria, a move which is expected to help the group further diversify its current business model and increase his net worth.

Away from his business interests, mention was also made of his philanthropic efforts in his profile on the Forbes website.

It reads in part, “Inspired by fellow billionaires, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, Dangote is making a name for himself on the philanthropic circuit and has given away millions to education, health and social causes in Africa.”

Apart from Dangote, Ibrahim is the only other African on the list, which contains 72 people.

Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, topped the list, displacing United States President, Barrack Obama, who dropped to the second spot for the first time in three years.

Chinese President, Xi Jinping, occupies the third spot, while the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, debuts on the list at number four.

Pope Francis, who was elected in March this year, leads 12 other new entrants.

Other notable new names on the list are Samsung Chairman, Lee Kun-Hee (41); Volkswagen’s Martin Winterkorn (49); South Korean President, Park Geun-hye (52); and Janet Yellen (72), who has been nominated by President Obama as the next leader of the US Federal Reserves.

The Executive Editor of the New York Times, Jill Abramson (68), makes a return appearance after dropping off the list in years past.

Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, aged 29, and North Korean leader, Kim Jung-un, aged 30, are the youngest people on the list. Zuckerberg occupies the 24th place, while Kim is ranked 46th.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, who occupies the eight spot, is the oldest person on the list. He is 89 years old.

The world’s richest man, Carlos Slim, is, however, not the most powerful man. The América Móvil honorary chairman occupies the 12th position.

According to Forbes, the Most Powerful People in the World list is an annual snapshot of the heads of state, financiers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs, who truly rule the world.

“It represents the collective wisdom of top Forbes editors, who consider hundreds of nominees before ranking the planet’s top 72 power-brokers – one for every 100 million people on earth – based on their scope of influence and their financial resources relative to their peers,” the magazine explained.

This year’s list features 17 heads of state, who run nations with a combined Gross Domestic Product of some $48tn.

Politics / Anti-corruption Protesters Want Oduah Jailed by sweetflame(m): 6:17am On Oct 31, 2013
Protesters on Wednesday stormed the Lagos Office of the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offences Commission, requesting that the embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, be tried and jailed if found guilty.

The protesters, who stormed the ICPC office around 10.15am, defied confrontation by armed policemen who shot thrice into the air and civil defence officers to gain entrance into the premises of the commission.

Chairman of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adediran, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, said that many lives had been lost due to corruption in the aviation sector.

He said, “The purchase of the bulletproof cars is outrageous. It is the ICPC that should deal with anything that has to do with official corruption. Their reaction has been that they have not got a petition to act and that  that is why investigation has not begun. Now we have submitted a petition, we want them to act.

“If Oduah is found guilty after the probe, we want her to go to jail; we want anybody found culpable to be prosecuted diligently, we want anybody found guilty to be adequately punished and until we get that we will not rest.

“It is saddening that the President who should set precedence for Nigerians to follow could be shielding the indicted and even include them in his entourage to Israel on holy pilgrimage. It is also not unlikely that Ms. Oduah is in the league of Mr. President’s benefactors.

“Though the President has set up a panel to investigate the allegations, but it must be noted that most of the time when President Jonathan sets up his panels, they are to bury the issues rather than bending it to justice.”

The protesters, who presented a petition to the ICPC,  prayed that investigations should be commenced into the activities of the minister; the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority; Nigerian Airspace Management Agency;  Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria; and other relevant agencies under the Ministry of Aviation.

Chief Superintendent of ICPC in Lagos, Mr. Binga Shintema, who attended to the protesters, assured them that their petition would be acted on.

Crime / Boy, 14, Rapes Nine-year-old Girl To Death by sweetflame(m): 4:25am On Oct 30, 2013
The police in Lagos State have commenced investigation into how a nine-year-old girl died, after sustaining injuries caused by alleged consistent rape.

According to police authorities, the deceased was raped over five times, by a 14-year-old student, Onyi Adimabua, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

The father of the deceased, Simeon Jigo, told PUNCH Metro that Onyi is the son of the proprietor of the school his daughter attended.

He said his daughter opened up about the rape when she started having medical problems.

The 77-year-old man said his daughter died on October 3, 2013.

He said, “Up until my daughter’s death, she was a pupil of Fulfilled Greenland School, Ikorodu, and she was in primary three. One day, she came home and started complaining of pains around her vagina, stomach area. We rushed her to Ikorodu General Hospital.

“A doctor checked her and after conducting some tests on her, told us that my daughter had sustained medical complications due to forced sexual intercourse. I was alarmed by this; so, I had a private discussion with my daughter.

“She told me that it was her school proprietor’s son, Onyi, that had been raping her. The boy had threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone about it.”

The indigene of Ondo State told PUNCH Metro that after initial treatments, he took his daughter to Arogbo in Ondo State to be taken care of but her condition continued to deteriorate.

A few days after the troubled father travelled to Ondo State, Onyi, accompanied by his parents, also travelled to Ondo State, to apologise to Jigo’s family. The girl, however, was said to have died that very day.

“On getting to the house where my daughter was, we discovered that she was dead. Onyi confessed that he had been raping my daughter prior to her death,’ Jigo said.

PUNCH Metro learnt that after the girl’s demise, irate youths in the area attempted to lynch the 14-year-old boy.

The bereaved father was said to have intervened and reported the matter to a nearby police station, where the teenager was held for safe keeping. The next morning, Onyi and his parents travelled back to Lagos.

The alleged rapist’s parents, in company with a chief in Ikorodu, reportedly visited Jigo when he returned to Lagos. The group were said to have pleaded that the bereaved father should not pursue the case but he refused.

Jigo said, “I went to the Ikorodu Police station to report the case but was surprised when the policemen on duty said I should not write any statement.  They only told me to write down my telephone number and said they would call me later.

“After waiting for many days without any call, I wrote a petition and the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.”

It was however learnt that Onyi had been taken to his father’s hometown in Delta State thereby stalling police investigation.

The teenager’s parents,  however described the incident as the handiwork of the devil.

The 14-year-old boy’s father, Andrew Adimabua, said, “I trained that boy in the way of the Lord and expected so much from him. He has confessed to the act; there is nothing to hide. He told me that he learnt about sex by watching blue (pornographic) films.

“We are not hiding him and we will cooperate with the police. On the day the little girl died, he was beaten up and made to stay in the rain for hours. As a result, he contracted pneumonia so we sent him home for treatment. When he recovers, he’ll be taken to the police for questioning.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, expressed shock at the development.

Braide said Onyi would be re-arrested in the course of investigation.

“It is appalling that a teenager could indulge in such act. The matter is under investigation and the culprit will be re-arrested.”

Education / ASUUSTRIKE: We Are Tired Of Staying At Home - Lecturers by sweetflame(m): 6:20pm On Oct 29, 2013
Now when the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is well into its fourth month, some lecturers are coming out in the open to advocate the suspension of the industrial action.
Writing on his Facebook wall, one of the lecturers said: “He who fights and run away lives to fight another day”.

Jude Osy Nwankwo, who lectures at the University of Nigeria (UNN), admitted that the strike is taking effect on the lecturers. His words:

“We don tire. . . this strike don tire us for Nsukka o. Even traders in the market are affected by the strike. Meanwhile, how you dey cope with the strike?”

Some of the responses to Nwankwo’s post however indicated that not all lecturers are negatively affected by the strike as those in the big towns have kept themselves busy with consultancies that bring them income to cushion the effects of government’s no-work-no-pay policy. Below are excerpts:

Jude Osy Nwankwo: He who fights and run away lives to fight another day.

Golden Collins Chigoo: lolz i can see dat dis strike is takin effect on u.

Jude Osy Nwankwo: My dear, we don tire.

Adaora Uzoamaka Nwafor: Students are crying, Lecturers too are crying! ASSU bikozianu!!!!!

Manumehe Raphael Uzoma @ Adaora…. Lecturers crying? Ah! I don’t know about that oh! I think it’s the students that are crying and not the Lecturers.

Adaora Uzoamaka Nwafor: My Dear Raph, they are, it’s affecting everybody. No one is left out.

Manumehe Raphael Uzoma Adaora… It’s affecting everybody. Fine. But Lecturers are not crying. Students are, probably.

Jude Osy Nwankwo: My dear Ralph, this strike don tire us for Nsukka o. Even traders in the market are affected by the strike. Meanwhile, how you dey cope with the strike?

Manumehe Raphael Uzoma: Em, well, sorry about the situation the strike put you in. As for me? Well, I’ve been busy with one group research or the other (official) + being a Visiting Facilitator to one blue chip company or the other (unofficial).

This pretty sums up my activities during this strike period.

Manumehe Raphael Uzoma: All the aforementioned happens during the day. In the evening I conduct my Music Classes/Choir Practice for different Choirs throughout the week. Pentecostal Choirs are now inclusive. 3 Catholic Choirs, 2 Pentecostal Choirs. So, honestly, I’m not feeling the strike. Finances have run to an all time low, but I’m still pushing on.

Jude Osy Nwankwo: Lolz
@Azubuike. Ralph you’re lucky to be in Ibadan. The situation is so bad in Nsukka because the students are the driving force of Nsukka economy. Nothing is happening here bro.

It will be reminded, that ASUU has embarked upon an indefinite strike June 30, 2013. The lecturers protest against the FG’s failure to honour a 2009 agreement signed between it and ASUU in 2009 pertaining to issues of university funding and improvement of infrastructure in the sector.

Leo Adewale: My belief is based on Deut. 6:4 , Malachi 2:10 , Mark 10:18 , Romans 3:29 & 30 e.t.c. Futhermore what did Jesus said in John 20:17 ?? What did Paul said in 1Corinthians 11:3 ?? When Stephen was stoned to death in Acts 5:56, he saw the Father (GOD), he saw the Son (JESUS) standing at who's right hand?? Why didn't he see the holy spirit?? This topic should be dropped cos the Bible is God's word and if those Bible verses above doesn't shed light on this trinity matter, then the prophecy of 2 Peter 2:1 - 22 is has to be read over and over again.... I rest my case

They must be dumb if after reading this n still tink there's trinity, NICE one tho smiley

The Holy Spirit is not a force. He is a person, a divine person
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom
the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you
all things, and bring all things to your
remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:26

The Bible uses HE not It. Here below shows you that the Holy Spirit is a person and not a force:
1. • The Holy Spirit has a Mind:
Romans 8:27
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind
of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the
saints in accordance with God's will. (NIV)

2. • The Holy Spirit has a Will:
1 Corinthians 12:11
But one and the same Spirit works all these things,
distributing to each one individually just as He wills. (NASB)

3. • The Holy Spirit has Emotions: The Holy Spirit grieves:
Ephesians 4:30
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with
whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (NIV)
Isaiah 63:10
Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he
turned and became their enemy and he himself
fought against them. (NIV)
