podosci: I was about about to exit this post because it lacks authenticity without the mention of Kogi state but thank God I found Kogi state at the bottom. Kogi state is the worst state in Nigeria in terms of infrastructural, Economic, human development, infact I ranks at bottom of any sought of development...The poverty rate in this state is ripe and the state capital looks more like a zoo with different wild animals in the form of humans moving about... This state seriously need to start holding their leaders responsible and shelve their ethnic and religious bigotry In my ranking Kogi state is the worst state in Nigeria. I feel very sad about Kogi state. Kogi and Bayelsa are poster states for bad leadership. Both states boasts of numerous mineral and natural resources but with nothing to show for it. |

Some Nigerian states have no business being the way they currently are if you take to account the enormous human, material or natural potentials they have been blessed with. These states should have been the envy of many Nigerian states and lead the way in their respective geopolitical zones in terms of economic and development and prosperity. The three states that resonates in my mind are Abia State, Bayelsa State and Kogi State. These three states have no business being in the sorry state and mess they find themselves in if not for the terrible quality of leadership they have been receiving since our return to democracy in 1999. Abia state: This state, especially its commercial capital Aba was the industrial hub of the eastern region. The level of industrial and economic productivity in Aba was unmatched in the eastern region. Aba was home to numerous industries and industrialists at all levels. All the state needed was a leader to galvanize and harmonize this productivity to foster economic prosperity. However, the state has been on a steady decline since 1999 due to disastrous leadership offered by its elected governors. Industrial productivity has declined because various industries have shut down. Insecurity has been a constant menace the state has to contend with. Also, the disgusting level of environmental degradation in Aba is a major health concern on its populace. Abia was a state that was meant to feed the eastern region with locally made consumer goods but its a sorry state today due to bad leadership. Bayelsa State: As at 1999, Bayelsa was a like a virgin land - barely untouched. With just eight local governments, a population of less than two million and annual allocations over a hundred billion, Bayelsa as a state has no reason whatsoever to have a poverty rate of more than 5 percent. Bayelsa state was meant to be the jewel of the Niger Delta. The state has the capacity to meet and supply the aquaculture, energy and tourism needs of the south south and south east. But a cursory look at the current state of Bayelsa state evokes pity and tears. - A state that is completely surrounded by water has no potable water supply (Bayelsa state is 40 percent water) - The capital yenagoa is not befitting of a state capital- it lacks planning, poor road network, poor transport system, poor infrastructure - Poverty rate in Bayelsa is one of the highest in the South South - No industrialization and productivity - High levels of corruption The administration of DSP Alams and GeJ failed disastrously in laying a solid foundation for subsequent governors. The subsequent governors carried on with the failures of their predecessors and Bayelsa is now in a sorry state. We are still hoping for the best anyways. Kogi State: I don't even know where to start with Kogi state. Somebody should help me. |

Op are you listening to yourself??
Could you quote some other sources for us??
This would make for an interesting debate. Unfortunately, That has been the pattern for the six - seven years. Check our budgets for last six years and check the amount on subsidies. Our budgets have never exceeded 4 trillion naira but our subsidy expenses has been constantly above 1 trillion. |

A lot of misinformation has been being flying around of recent, one of which is that GEJ met a subsidy spending of less than 300 billion before it shot over 1 trillion as he became president. This is a Bloomberg article to dispel the false news once and for all. Nigeria Plans to Abolish Fuel Subsidies, Aganga Says
Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Nigeria’s government is aiming to remove subsidies on domestic fuel prices by the end of next year at the latest after investing in a mass transit system to ease the impact on the poor, Finance Minister Olusegun Aganga said.
“It is going to be sooner rather than later,” Aganga said in an interview in London today. Everything will be ready “by the end of 2011 at the latest. It could be this year.”[/b]
The subsidies will cost the government 520 billion naira ($3.4 billion) this year, compared with 1 trillion in 2009, central bank Governor Lamido Sanusi estimated in June. That compares with a federal budget deficit of 1.9 trillion naira this year, which Aganga said today he wanted to narrow in 2011.
The abolition of the subsidy would increase gasoline prices to 115 to 120 naira a liter from 64 naira currently, Aganga said.
“If that happened, it would be a big shock to the system,” he said.
Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, imports more than 80 percent of its domestic fuel due to a lack of refining capacity, according to the country’s Petroleum Ministry. The government, through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp., guarantees regulated fuel prices by paying importers the difference with market prices. Mass Transit
Crude oil for October delivery declined $1.33, or 1.8 percent, to $73.69 a barrel at 12:14 p.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Nigeria’s budget estimated an average oil price for the year of $60 a barrel.
About 10 billion naira has been earmarked to improve public transportation and many buses have already been ordered, Aganda said.
The government is also in talks with labor unions to gain their support and avoid social unrest, he said. “I think we are making very good progress” in the talks.
“Everyone accepts that there is no economic sense to maintaining subsidies,” Aganga said. “The question is, what would be the impact of removing the subsidy on those that you want to protect, the most vulnerable in society?”

omenka: Interesting!
I have just a few questions.
1). How much were previous administrations paying for subsidy??
2). How much did Jonathan pay on assumption of duty as the president and in subsequent years as president??
3). What necessitated the geometric increase in the expenditure on subsidy soon after Jonathan took over?? It was about 300billion on the budget but burgeoned to nearly 2trillion at the end of the fiscal year. Was there a corresponding increase in the demand of products to have warranted such increase in "supply"?? Did Nigeria get thirstier for petroleum products??
4). Was there any supplementary budget passed by the NASS to accommodate the increase as stated in #3??
5). There were about 40 importers of products prior to Jonathan's regime. After he took over, the list went over the roof to about 150!! What was the reason behind this??
#waiting.
Cc: gohome. 1. In 2009, the Yar'Adua/Goodluck administration spent 1 trillion naira on fuel subsidies. The amounts expended were less in previous years due to various factors which I don't have the time to explain. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2010-09-03/nigeria-aims-to-end-oil-subsidies-within-6-months-finance-minister-says2. This question is not clear. The federal government budgeted the sum of 580 billion for petrol subsidies in 2010. There are are bound to variances between the budgeted amount and expended amount due various reasons. 3. In his bid to ensure a steady supply of petroleum to Nigerians and end persistent scarcity, GEJ decided to increase the number of petrol importers and suppliers. This (coupled with an increase in USD/NIR exchange rate) resulted in a sharp increase in subsidy spending by almost 100 percent from 1 trillion to almost 2 trillion. Nigerians were enjoying a steady supply of petrol but with huge costs to the government. 4. None 5. To ensure a steady supply of petrol, which Nigerians can attest to that they enjoyed during past four years. |

The problem with subsidy is the exchange rate. If naira exchanged for 90 naira per dollar, we won't have a problem with subsidy removal |

6pax: This list is trash without the best governor in Nigeria wich is Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi In terms of job creation and youth empowerment. his unprecedented employment of over 13,000 teachers and over 400 doctors is a phenomenal achievement for any governor in Nigeria. his youth empowerment program through RSSDA is top notch. In education he built the best primary and secondary schools in the country (over 500). in health he built the best primary and secondary health centers in the country (over 100). In security he virtually saw militancy off in Rivers state and stopped cultism in Rivers tertiary institutions. In Agriculture his Songhai farm initiative is an epic agric revolution. In infrastructure he transform the landscape of Ph and its environs. dualise most major Roads and constructed inner streets with drainage and walk way( D-line part of ph comes to mind) Amaechi is a phenomenon Crap. Amaechi is a failure. |
Politics › Re: List Of Five Alleged Outstanding Governors by Sweetguy25: 6:06pm On May 26, 2015*. Modified: 6:53pm On May 26, 2015 |
I personally rate Fashola above Akpabio (although I hate to admit it because I hate APC). Fashola touched more sectors in infrastructure development than Akpabio. Akpabio barely developed infrastructure projects in the water and social housing sectors while Fashola did. Akpabio focused more on massive road construction and real estate/tourism development(which is not a bad plan) but these things don't develop state's social and human capital. I just wish Akpabio invested more in social infrastructure like public housing projects, potable public water supply and public transportation.
On Sullivan, I think he's being hindered by the little financial resources exposed to the state. Even with that, he's still the best governor in the south east. I remember he had a free wifi project back in 2008 for the city of enugu. I don't know if it still works.
I don't know about the other governors because I've never visited their states but i believe others can vouch for them.
In general, I'm disappointed at the poor performance of all state governors in Nigeria. I find it shocking that no state governor in Nigeria was able to provide constant potable water supply for its homes during the past eight years despite the better financial resources accrued to them. Postal addressing systems in most states are inefficient and sometimes non existent. Town and city planning are too poor in most Nigerian states. These are issues that make a state and its capital habitable but almost all state governors overlook them.
Our state governors need to buckle up. |
