Politics / Re: People Celebrating The Reelection Of Bala Muhammad (Kaura) In Bauchi City.(Pics) by SwordOfOrion(m): 3:49pm On Mar 20, 2023
Obaofaba:
Nawaoh, I actually thought Sadiq Abubakar will win this election. Bala Muhammad wasted the last four years of the state.
Wasted?! I disagree with you. Kaura has been hard at work with infrastructural projects in the state. And I didn't just see pictures, I actually ply some of the roads he has built, dualized and fitted with solar street lighting. Since I came to Bauchi I had no idea they had a Water Board and there were water pipes in the ground until Bala Muhammad took office. I just woke up one day to see water coming out of the taps to my shock and astonishment. People that had to buy water in jerrycans before or had to trek long distances to fetch water have had their lives made easier. So what are you saying? At least he has done something. What have the last few governors done? You are just sitting behind your screen opening your mouth waaaaaaa!

Kaura got reelected despite the strong forces of some political elites working against him. I must say he deserves to continue all the good work he has been doing in Bauchi State.

Health / Is It Safe To Use A Braided Garden Hose For Drinking Water? by SwordOfOrion(m): 9:56am On Jul 10, 2022
Happy Sunday guys. I need a little guidance on this. So where I live, tap water comes only once every few days. The water flows for a few hours and then is shut off by the utility (water board). Now I have these large containers that I fill up with water pending the next time we get water. I used to use buckets to fill them which I figured was energy intensive and time consuming, so i decided to buy a normal braided garden hose, connect it to the tap and fill all of my containers... you know, point and fill (work smart, not hard). The problem is the hose has this strong chemical smell, and the water begins to smell like the hose if it sits in it for a while, and the smell is really unpleasant. I know have a feeling this is not safe and it may affect my health in the long term since I use the water to cook and make tea and stuff like that. I'm thinking of getting rid of the hose, I don't want to wake up some years later with kidney or liver problems or cancer. What do you guys think? And is there a hose you can recommend for handling drinking water? I don't want to go back to using the buckets again.
Lalasticlala, biko, help save a guy's life.

I eventually ran out of charge and storage space on my camera, so there were lots more stuff I didn't get to capture. Like the camels, a guy that fell off his horse right in front of me (actually the horse sort of squatted for some reason and the guy fell off, it was funny), and the highlight when the Emir of Bauchi himself passed (the hail of gunfire was deafening!). I also got video footage which I'll share when I upload to YouTube. That's all folks. Hope you enjoyed it.

I even saw a drone (looked like some kind of Mavic Air or Pro model, it was far so I couldn't really tell) hovering in the air taking what must be some awesome shots.

So the durbar is held only during Eid-El-Fitr (aka small Sallah) and never during the Eid-El-Kabir (or big Sallah) maybe because everybody wants to go home and slaughter their rams. cheesy

I was busy fiddling with my camera when two little children with pythons round their necks passed by. Chai! I had to run ahead to make sure I got at least a pic. I couldn't do better than this because of the crowd. I basically had to force my hand through the crowd to get that pic, and I got some angry scowls angry for my effort. I'm sorry I failed you Lalasticlala, may be next time. grin

The routes are usually blocked to traffic, so if you have to go some place within the durbar route you better get there early in the morning or else your only option will be to walk.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Npowerng by SwordOfOrion(m): 8:09pm On Jun 29, 2018
Hello Mr npower, I'm in a pickle right now. I got a text message inviting me for the Npower software development physical verification exercise, I also confirmed that I have received a congratulatory message saying that I have been successfully pre-selected for the Npower Knowledge Developer Track training on the Npower website. That's all good, but the problem is, I've been to the Bauchi LGA secretariat where the physical verification is taking place and I can't find my name on the list. I've asked a sibling of mine to check my name in the Kaduna South LGA secretariat which is my LGA of origin and my name can't be found there either! So I'm stuck with an invitation for the physical verification but I can't find my name anywhere! How do I get out of this situation?

It's not an invention, just a contraption. And for God's sake it's not what you'd call "mobile"! Its quite funny actually; a "mobile phone" that uses what i assume is a television cathode ray tube for a display, an incandescent light bulb, a fluorescent lamp (what for?), is that a supposed to be a parabolic antenna?! and what is it doing on a supposed "mobile phone"? And can someone please tell me what they mean by "that works on a radiator"? a freaking radiator in a mobile phone?! let me just stop here. I'm not dissing the boy's effort though, its a good thing he has a strong interest in technology not to mention the motivation to go ahead and build the monster. grin I just wish he had better opportunities. For those saying the CIA is going to hunt him down i can only shake my head, they have better things to do.

Now that i find freaking awesome!! cool and i can't wait to try it out myself! http://www.instructables.com/id/Downloading-NOAA-satellite-images-cheaply-and-easi/

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Aerial Filming And Photography in Nigeria by SwordOfOrion(m): 3:19pm On Jan 05, 2014
Joagbaje: I've study much of aerial photography from America and other places but I've not hear of it in Nigeria. Is there anyone here who is into aerial filming. I do have some drones and quads , let's discuss
@VillageBoi You see what I'm talking about?! The OP was curious if there were like minded people out there so he too was probably feeling as isolated as I was. Probably the very reason why he started this thread!

VillageBoi: You're definitely onto something pretty good that is for the most part lacking in Naija.
Those were your very own words! So you can't blame me for my thoughts! grin
Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Aerial Filming And Photography in Nigeria by SwordOfOrion(m): 3:01pm On Jan 05, 2014
VillageBoi:
That's really funny... why in the world would you think that? smh!
Sorry if I sounded that way to you but honestly I have NEVER in my life met anyone in Nigeria with even a remote let alone serious interest in rc (granted, I don't get around much but still...). Even your profile shows that you are located in the UK. Yes I know I couldn't possibly be the only living person on Nigerian soil to have such an interest...I was only exaggerating and going for a bit of humour but I see you took my comment overly seriously (as evidenced by "smh!", unless I am also taking your comment too seriously cheesy ). Anyway I'm really happy to have come across you guys and I hope to learn a lot from all of you (from your posts you guys really know your stuff) even though I'm not really into videos and FPV and so on(YET), building wicked looking custom stunt quads, gliders, powered planes and helis is what I really fancy for now (you know, RedBull Air Race stuff), then from there I'm thinking of pushing the endurance envelope. I'm building my first quad now (my first rc anything in fact) so I'm still a noob and I have a very long way to go, I'm no expert. Please forgive me if I sound discourteous or anything, I'm just excited that's all.
Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Aerial Filming And Photography in Nigeria by SwordOfOrion(m): 9:30pm On Jan 04, 2014
Wow! And I thought I was the only one into quadcopters and all things rc. So there actually IS an rc community in Nigeria?!! shocked

By the way.....first post of 2014! grin

A quad with land and sea capabilities? Could this be true?!
OP, can you please post your source, I would really love to read more about this quadcopter.
Science/Technology / Re: Satellite Embarks On Historic Five-year Mission To Map The Milky Way In 3D by SwordOfOrion(m): 4:29pm On Dec 19, 2013
I know that stars surveyed by the Hipparcos satellite were given HIP numbers and formed the Hipparcos Catalogue (If you have ever used Stellarium, you'll know about HIP numbers. wink ). With this, I wonder if a Gaia Catalogue will be formed with objects having GAI numbers and if they would be incorporated into Stellarium.

A £2 billion European probe that will map more
than a billion stars in 3D has been launched into
our galaxy.
^^ This statement is quite misleading, it makes you think the probe is to be lauched out of the solar system and into interstellar space, but on reading further you find out that it is destined for the L2 Lagrangian point which is well within the Solar system, they should replace "galaxy" with "solar system". Lagrangian points are simply fascinating and L2 gets special attention because it is the only one that gets partial shielding from the sun (by the earth) making it a good vantage point for space observatiories looking into deep space.
Also, I had no idea Soyuz rockets are launched from Kourou shocked
I always thought they were only launched from Baikonur, I must really be out of touch with astronomy and space science/tech.
OP thanks for the post, It brings back memories of when I was really crazy about these things, I remember my mother having to completely ban me from borrowing books (a lot of which were about space) from the school library - unless they were related to my studies - as WAEC/JAMB approached (God bless you Mom!). University took the sting out of it but I'm still holding on. I love stuff like this so OP keep them coming!
Programming / Re: I Want To Learn Programming. Which Language Should I Start With? by SwordOfOrion(m): 11:20pm On Dec 18, 2013
I must say, this is one of the most useful threads I've seen on Nairaland and after going through most of it, I am almost convinced that helping newbies is actually more difficult than learning programming itself, this coming from a newbie! They seem to have a knack for asking questions that have been answered over and over again. I suspect many don’t go through the posts before they post questions that have already been answered, anyway [Javanian], [Ajibel] and co; you guys are doing a wonderful and selfless job, keep it up, it's not easy, and please don't get tired of us.
I have noticed that embedded systems programming is not really popular here, it seems everybody wants to design/program a killer mobile app, website or desktop tool and I suspect it’s because that's where the money is, but then if you are looking into programming embedded systems like microcontrollers I suggest learning C, it is very ubiquitous in the embedded systems universe (please o, I’m not saying C is the best language to start with, I’m just saying that if programming embedded systems is your fancy, it's an excellent choice, if not it’s still an extremely useful language anyway).
For anyone interested I’ll share some of my thoughts and experiences. You can start by downloading some e-books about C, I highly recommend "Beej's Guide to C Programming", it has a very relaxed, informal, and even playful approach thus making it very newbie friendly, the author even cracks jokes as he goes along. I’m currently using it and enjoying every step of the way, you can download it from www.beej.us/guide/bgc/ (pdf format) or just google the book title. I even printed mine so that I can continue reading it whenever NEPA (PHCN) strikes and I can’t practice angry , and also so that I don’t have to keep switching between windows when practicing on the computer. I use two IDEs which come with compilers: Dev-C++ and Code::Blocks. To write programs for my only microcontroller grin I use Code::Blocks. For general practice I prefer to use the Dev-C++ IDE from www.bloodshed.net/dev/devcpp.html and I highly recommend it for newbies as it is simple and light compared to Code::Blocks, now make sure you download the option that includes the Mingw compiler to make life easy for yourself (and [Javanian] grin ). Install it and run it (I installed it on both Windows XP and Windows 7 (32bit) without any wahala). When you run it you will be greeted by a tip, read it then close it when you are done. Click on "File" (in the menu bar on the top left corner of the window) then "New" then "Project" and you will be greeted by another window, click on "Console Application" choose between C and C++ (C in this case) give your project a name and click "Ok". I suggest creating a new folder on the desktop and saving it there to make things easier to find. When you have done all that you’ll see some code in the white space of the editor, I cleaned it up and started practicing right away (before you clean it up I want you to notice something; the second to the last line, just above "return 0;" (quotation marks excluded) you will see this line "system("PAUSE" );" (outer quotation marks excluded), now write that down exactly as it is, you’ll need it later. Now you can write your first program (usually Hello World). Remember the "system("PAUSE" );" I told you to write down earlier? go ahead and add that to your program, just above "return 0;" don’t include the outer quotation marks but make sure you include the quotation marks in the bracket surrounding PAUSE, click "Execute" in the menu at the top of the window and then click "Compile and Run" or simply press F9 (no I’m not talking about some people’s WAEC results grin ) on your keyboard, if you have done everything right, a command prompt window will appear (open) with the words "Hello World" or execute whatever program it is that you have written, press any key and it will disappear (close). The purpose of that "system("PAUSE" );” line is to keep the command prompt window open until you press any key, if you don’t add it to your program the command prompt window will close as soon as the program has been executed and this can happen so fast that all you’ll see is a flash (if you see anything at all) and that would probably just result in more complaints on Nairaland and also give yourself and [Javanian] unnecessary headaches -

[N00b]: pls javania my name is noob, I wrote my program on Dev-C++ and tried to compile and run it but nothing is happening, I tried uninstalling and installing it again and it still doesn’t want to work, I have been trying for the past one week but the foolish thing still doesn’t want to work, I am going crazy, pls javania help me pls! Can I have your number so that I can call you and you can talk me through the process? Thanks in advance.

[Javanian]: *sighs* here we go again.

(*smh* Noobs! Kai! grin )

-You can experiment and see by including and removing the line to see the results you get on each occasion. I think the “system("PAUSE" );” line might be specific to Dev-C++ and not necessarily a C function but then I don’t know so house gurus please enlighten us. If you open the folder you saved your project in you will find five files (at least that’s what I see in my case) clicking on the executable file will run your program, clicking on the Dev-C++ project file (the purple one with the gears) will open your code in a new Dev-C++ window, if it appears blank check the field on the left (under the “Project” button) and click on "main.c" (if you don’t see the "main.c", click the "+" sign just before your project title and the “main.c” will drop down, toh! because I know noobs) and your project will be opened in the editor so that you can continue playing around with your code, just modify it and click on "compile and run" each time (in case you think pressing F9 will jinx your WAEC results. grin ), that way you don’t need to be creating new projects all the time. Dev-C++ itself has a document (e-book?) about C that you can access by clicking the “Help” button and then the “Help in Dev-C++” option in the menu bar at the top of the window (I tried this on Windows 7 but it didn't work, instead it was giving me tory about "Windows Help Format", oya! Dev-C++ people, explain! angry But those using Windows XP are safe). Then also remember that google is your friend whenever you run into problems or need more information about anything (as [Ajibel] (was it?) said; shame on you if you can't use google angry ), it's also a good idea to join an online forum on C programming, I haven’t done that yet so I don’t have any to recommend.
I’ve already confessed to being a newbie myself so I’m not an authority on this, in fact I'm still very raw and it’s possible that I have made mistakes or misunderstood some things so if you find anything wrong with anything I’ve said please do not hesitate to offer corrections for the benefit of all including myself. All this is based on what I have learned so far which is very little but at least it’s something. Well I hope this small contribution of mine will be of use to someone one day, if not, at least it will decorate the pages of Nairaland for some time. grin

P.S: I didn’t expect my post to be this long shocked , I guess I got carried away. grin
