PoliticsCREAP Raises Alarm Over Delay In Electoral Act Amendments, Warns Of Risk To 2027 by SylvanusUdoenoh(op): 12:44pm On Jan 22
Abuja, January 22, 2026

The CREAP Africa Initiative has warned that continued delays by the Nigerian Senate in concluding amendments to the Electoral Act 2022 could seriously undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the civil society organisation said the 2023 general elections exposed major weaknesses in Nigeria’s electoral legal framework, with loopholes in the existing law enabling irregularities, weakening result collation processes, and making it extremely difficult for aggrieved candidates and citizens to secure justice through the courts.

According to CREAP, these failures eroded public trust in the electoral process and left many Nigerians feeling disenfranchised. The group stressed that without urgent legal reforms, the country risks repeating the mistakes of the last election cycle.

“If Nigeria is serious about correcting the failures of 2023, the legal framework governing elections must be urgently reviewed and strengthened,” the organisation said, adding that “electoral reforms delayed are electoral reforms denied.”

CREAP Africa Initiative expressed particular concern over what it described as growing signs that the Senate is deliberately stalling the passage of critical amendments to the Electoral Act. It cited recent investigative reports by civic accountability platforms, including AdvoKC and the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), as reinforcing fears of legislative inaction and a lack of political will to protect electoral integrity.

The organisation warned that failure to pass and implement the amendments in good time would amount to determining electoral outcomes long before Nigerians cast their votes in 2027.

Among its demands, CREAP called on the Senate to treat the Electoral Act amendment bill as a national priority and conclude the legislative process without further delay. It urged lawmakers to close existing legal loopholes by mandating transparent, technology-enabled result transmission, strengthening safeguards against manipulation, and ensuring that electoral offences attract clear and enforceable penalties.

The group also called for reforms to improve access to justice in electoral disputes, including removing procedural barriers that make it difficult for petitioners to prove their cases and ensuring that all election-related court cases are concluded before winners are sworn into office.

In addition, CREAP urged greater public accountability, insisting that Nigerians have a right to know where their elected representatives stand on electoral reform.

“The refusal or delay in amending the Electoral Act is not legislative caution—it is legislative sabotage,” said Sylvanus Udoenoh, Executive Director of CREAP Africa Initiative. “No democracy can survive when the rules of competition are deliberately left broken.”

CREAP Africa Initiative reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance, civic participation, and electoral integrity, warning that Nigeria’s democratic future must not be compromised by partisan interests or closed-door politics.

The organisation concluded by calling on the Senate to act urgently and responsibly, noting that the integrity of the 2027 general elections depends on timely and meaningful electoral reforms.
PoliticsRe: CREAP Demands Urgent Action As Over 170 Christian Worshippers Abducted In Kaduna by SylvanusUdoenoh(op): 12:35pm On Jan 22
Abuja, January 22, 2026

The CREAP Africa Initiative has condemned the abduction of more than 170 Christian worshippers during Sunday morning church services in Kaduna State, describing the incident as a grave violation of human rights and religious freedom.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the civil society organisation said armed assailants stormed two churches during worship, blocked exits, and forcibly dragged congregants into surrounding bush areas. More than 160 of those abducted are still missing, raising fears for their safety and wellbeing.

CREAP described the attack as part of a troubling pattern of targeted violence against Christian communities in parts of northern Nigeria, warning that the scale and coordination of such attacks point to deep-rooted security failures and growing impunity.

“Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries, not scenes of terror,” the organisation said, stressing that no Nigerian should live in fear of abduction or death simply because of their faith.

The group noted that freedom of religion is guaranteed under Nigeria’s Constitution and international human rights treaties to which the country is a signatory, adding that the continued targeting of worshippers represents a direct assault on these protections.

CREAP Africa Initiative called on the Federal Government and security agencies to immediately launch intelligence-driven rescue operations to secure the safe and unconditional release of all abducted persons. It also urged the government to carry out decisive security reforms, including improved intelligence gathering, rapid response mechanisms, and accountability for security lapses.

In addition, the organisation demanded that those responsible for the attack—along with any sponsors—be identified, arrested, and prosecuted, insisting that ending impunity is key to stopping the cycle of violence. It further called for enhanced protection of churches, mosques, and other vulnerable civilian spaces, particularly in high-risk areas.

The group also appealed for greater transparency and engagement with national and international partners on steps being taken to address religious persecution and mass abductions.

“Nigeria cannot continue on a path where citizens are hunted in their places of worship and the world is left to raise the alarm for us,” said Sylvanus Udoenoh, Executive Director of CREAP Africa Initiative. “Protecting lives is the most basic duty of the state.”

CREAP Africa Initiative expressed solidarity with the victims, their families, and affected faith communities, warning that peace and national cohesion cannot thrive where fear and silence replace freedom and justice.

The organisation concluded by urging authorities to act swiftly and decisively, noting that the continued bloodshed and abductions must not be allowed to become Nigeria’s new normal.[/quote]

Abuja, Nigeria – June 16, 2025

A civil rights group, CREAP Africa Initiative has strongly condemned the brutal killings of over 200 residents in Yelwata, Benue State, during a deadly overnight attack by armed men on Friday, June 13.

Describing the massacre as “senseless” and “heartbreaking,” the civil society organization called for urgent national security reforms, a state of emergency across conflict zones, and justice for the victims.

> “The attack in Yelwata is not just a Benue tragedy—it is a Nigerian emergency,” said Sylvanus Udoenoh, the Executive Director of CREAP Africa Initiative. He added that “No nation can survive when blood flows with such regularity and justice is denied at ease.”

While official reports put the death toll at 59, at the time of writing this news, eyewitness accounts suggest that the number of victims may exceed 200, with dozens still missing and homes completely razed.

In its official statement, the organization made five key demands:

A State of Security Emergency in Benue and other crisis-prone regions;

National Security Sector Reforms, including improved intelligence and community policing;

Justice for Victims, with perpetrators swiftly prosecuted;

Immediate Humanitarian Relief for survivors and displaced persons;

And Restoration of Governance in neglected rural areas vulnerable to repeated attacks.

CREAP also urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, NEMA, and civil society actors to move swiftly to support survivors with food, trauma counseling, and temporary shelter.

Reaffirming its commitment to social justice and civic protection, the organization warned against Nigeria’s continued “culture of silence, impunity, and endless funerals,” calling on both federal and state authorities to “wake up to their constitutional responsibilities.”

PRESS RELEASE

CREAP Calls for Urgent Action to End Violence Against Women and Girls

Abuja, November 25, 2024

On the occasion to mark the 2024 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, Community Rights Education Advancement Pathway Initiative, popularly referred to as CREAP Africa Initiative joins the global community in highlighting the urgent need to end the persistent and pervasive violence faced by women and girls worldwide. With the theme, "NO EXCUSE. UNiTE to End Violence Against Women,” the day draws attention to the devastating reality of violence and the human cost of inaction.

Speaking at the flag off of 16-Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women, held at Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Abuja, CREAP's Executive Director, Sylvanus Udoenoh noted that, "the staggering fact that 'every 10 minutes a woman loses her life to violence' is a grim reminder of the scale of this crisis. From physical and sexual abuse to psychological torment, violence against women manifests in both public and private spheres, cutting across social, economic, and cultural boundaries. No workplace, community, or home is entirely immune.

According to Mr. Udoenoh, "several incidents have brought to light the alarming lack of safety for women in their pursuit of purpose. No woman should feel unsafe while pursuing her career, building a home or contributing to society." These incidents highlight the failure of the system to provide protection for women and hold perpetrators of Violence accountable.

CREAP notes that "every act of violence against a woman or girl chips away at the foundations of equality, justice, and human rights. Beyond the immediate physical and emotional damage, such violence perpetuates cycles of poverty, limits access to education and healthcare, and undermines societal progress.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is not merely a date on the calendar; it is a call to action. CREAP Initiative stand to condemns all forms of violence against women and girls, from everyday micro-aggressions to heinous crimes like rape and murder. Governments, institutions, and individuals must be held accountable. Policies, laws, and mechanisms must be strengthened to protect women and ensure swift justice for perpetrators.

Survivors of violence deserve accessible resources, from healthcare and counseling to legal assistance, to rebuild their lives without stigma or fear.

Ending violence begins with challenging the cultural norms and misogynistic attitudes that enable it. This requires education, starting from childhood, to promote respect, equality, and empathy.

We must provide safe spaces for women. From workplaces to schools and homes, every environment must prioritize the safety and dignity of women and girls.

We urge all stakeholders vis-a-vis government, civil society organizations, community leaders, and individuals, to unite under the #NoExcuseCampaign. We must act decisively to end violence against women and girls.

- Support policies and programs that empower women and protect their rights.
- Speak out against violence and support survivors.
- Promote equality and respect in every sphere of life.

CREAP Africa Initiative Welcomes Supreme Court Judgment on Local Government Autonomy

Abuja, Nigeria - July 12, 2024

The Community Rights Education Advancement Pathway (CREAP) Africa Initiative warmly welcomes the recent judgment of the Supreme Court, which affirms the financial autonomy of local governments and prohibits state governors from unilaterally dissolving democratically elected local government leaders.

This landmark judgment is a significant milestone in the quest for effective grassroots governance and community development in Nigeria. With 774 local government areas, the country has long struggled with efficient governance at the third tier, hindered by state governors' overbearing influence.

The Supreme Court's decision to direct funds meant for local governments to be channeled directly to them from the Federation Account, rather than being held in joint accounts controlled by governors, is a major victory for local governance and democracy.

CREAP Africa Initiative urges both Federal and State Governments to fully respect and implement this judgment, allowing the local government system to function effectively as the third level of government and closest to the people in the locality.

We believe that this judgment will have a profound impact on social development in local communities, enabling them to access essential services, infrastructure, and resources that have been hitherto denied due to gubernatorial interference.

We call on all stakeholders to work together to ensure the successful implementation of this judgment and the empowerment of local governments to deliver on their mandate.

Congratulations to the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice for instituting this suit, and to the Supreme Court for upholding the Constitution and the principles of democracy.

Sylvanus Udoenoh

As the world marks the 2022 World Teacher's Day, a Development Enthusiast and Educationist, Sylvanus Asuquo Udoenoh, has called on the President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately address issues arising from the ongoing strike by the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities - ASUU and other teachers union to save the face of Nigeria Education Sector.

In a release personally signed and made public through his social media handles, Mr. Udoenoh, a trained economists and entrepreneur, noted the passionate dedication and invaluable contributions of teachers in the building of the society, mentioning that it is the teachers who produce great inventors, leaders, artistes, professionals, and celebrities who have contributed to the society.

The release furthers, "As each day passes, we are awakened to the realization of the wonderful role that teachers play in the building of our society. The 2022 World Teacher's Day is themed, "The transformation of Education Begins with a Teacher", according the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with an aim to focus on educators' work, take stock of achievements, and raise awareness around teachers' challenges and the role of teachers in the achievement of the global education targets.

Mr. Udoenoh went further to state that, "Teaching has continued to be a more demanding profession, especially in an increasingly complex, highly technical, and fast-changing world, and with many of our children struggling with difficult social and personal issues." He mentioned that, "That so many children in midst of these challenges, nonetheless go on to acquire the essential skills needed to participate in society, is a tribute to the persistence, dedication, and professionalism of teachers."

"It is this dedication, commitment, and professionalism that has produced the great inventors, leaders, professionals, artistes, entrepreneurs, celebrities, etc. A famous saying goes that, "without a teacher, the life of a student is a life without any direction", revealing that it is the teacher who inspires the ordinary pupil to do extraordinary things that enrich the society."

World Literacy Day; ULS Urge Stakeholders to Double Efforts In Ensuring Universal Education.

By Segun Adeoyi

The Universal Learning Solutions (ULS) on Thursday 8th September 2022 expressed excitement at it join the rest of the world to commemorate the 2022 International Literacy Day.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), this year’s International Literacy Day theme is, ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’

In a statement signed by Sylvanus Udoenoh, it's IT and Communications Officer, ULS said that the celebration was aimed at raising awareness of the importance of literacy to all countries and cultures.

Udoenoh said the Federal Government through the mandate of UBEC has continued to work assiduously in improving the literacy skills of elementary class pupils in public primary schools in Nigeria.

“For instance, in collaboration with Universal Learning Solutions, UBEC has trained over 184,000 teachers and over 6800 monitoring officials, on the Jolly Phonics methodology which aids children to read and write confidently in the English Language. This intervention has potentially reached over 16.7 million public primary school pupils across Nigeria.

“Despite Nigerian government’s commitment to improving the literacy level of pupils, there are still many challenges. For example, with an annual birth rate of 37.01%, the number of children of school age is steadily increasing without corresponding increase in social amenities.

“The recent data released by UNICEF and UNESCO on the numbers of out-of-school children in Nigeria is a concern. Compared with previous reports of 13.5 million out of school children in 2014, UNICEF and UNESCO in their recent global data analysis, reported over 18.5 million and about 20 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, respectively.

“This state of affairs requires urgent response from all stakeholders to double their effort to ensure that the Universal Basic Education Commission’s mantra of ‘education for all, the responsibility of all’ is achieved. The importance of literacy to the development of any country or culture cannot be overemphasized, as it is the foundation for the development of skills necessary for personal and group enrichments,” the statement read.

You are a function of the information you receive into your system, the people around you, and the environment where you live. Take it or leave it, they are the primary instruments that will contribute to your life (your successes and achievements). If this information has recorded anything into your consciousness, then you have to rethink the kind of person you are. What have your achieved? What success have you recorded for yourself? In any case, where you do not like yourself, you may rejig your life to give way to the kind of information, people and environment that will make you better.

Get yourself around strong people, strong ideas, powerful environments. That’s where your strength lies. Living in the presence of strength enables you to grow stronger. Like the Bible records, “iron sharpens iron; sp a man sharpens the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). In fulfilling your purpose, in achieving any set goal, in finding solutions to personal problems, in recording any milestone, you need the information, the people, and environment to draw strength, inspiration, guidance, support, and counsel from.
The earlier you appreciate the need for these strengths is the better because you will begin to experience these strengths in the needed areas of your life. It will inspire, encourage, and guide you to develop and expand new strengths within your set goals.

You see that the ocean is beautiful and inspiring, and at the same time powerful, unforgiving. Walk beside the ocean, let its waves dance with your feet, and make some of its strength your own. Station your life where you can find inspiration and watch yourself grow. Listen to a passionate speaker making a strong, sincere, and compelling argument. Whether you agree or not, you can draw strength from the ideas and the competent way they’re presented.
Instead of always feeling resentful or fearful, doubting the strength you encounter, seek to be inspired by it. Let its best attributes resonate with you, challenge you, and increase your strength. Go where there is strength that you can see, hear, feel for, it is in the presence of strength, that you will grow stronger.
