Had no idea an individual like you exist among tech people in this part.

I'm more interested in the area of safe-guarding my one of my intellectual property from being blatantly copied, stolen and or mimicked, as it involves coding a unique type of payment solution that has never before done before. A fintech novelty.

Because of this I'm learning coding myself and would like to be guided as to how one can patent it before launch. I pretty much understand that one cannot request a patent for an idea or a business idea. One can only be granted an exclusive patent right for inventing, a product or a process that provides a new way of doing something, or that which offers a new technical solution to a problem.

My issue is...in Nigeria, does our patent laws exist to genuinely protects the interest of the tech inventor.

The Patents and Design Act Cap P2 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 , covers for the grant of patent rights to inventors in Nigeria . I am personally aware of a few patented inventions and designs in Nigeria including some of popular fashion designer , Deola Sagoe designs .

As a tech inventor , you can protect your intellectual property rights through copyright and the novelty of what you are working on can also qualify you for “ patents “ depending on how truly unique your idea/invention is and if it meets all other requirements provided under the act .

Making that same sound or that same paced music or trying to make another hit. As someone who's studied the landscape of naija music a bit I can say that it scarcely works.

You don't do that, the best strategy is collabos, change your style, stop trying to make club bangers instead target radio hits, make slower music, never ever jump on trends, engage more on social media, write for other artists if you can, appear in social functions and garner positive publicity, promote other artists and their music, try other things outside music like skit, movies, talk show, anything that can ease you back into public consciousness.

And finally don't think it's a 3 months thing, it will take at least 1-3 years but it's a process gradually you amass heat. And you must keep on releasing the best music you can make don't wait for a hit before you start pushing out your better songs.

No, keep releasing music get a time frame maybe every 2 months. Make music videos I know it's expensive but it musnt be elaborate.

Because preference changes with demographics and time. The demographics you made music for in the past have moved on, so you are faced with a younger demographic than you are use to and their preference is different from what you use to dish out both in lyrics and beats.

Do you know as a Programmer you have intellectual property rights over some of your codes and most of your designs . ? Yes . You Do .

I will be discussing some of these salient issues relevant to programmers and startup founders on this thread including but not limited to Regulatory laws for different fields of technology in Nigeria , contract terms to look out for , type of contracts to look out for when dealing with programmers or vc firms from other jurisdictions, contracts you should have as Programmer etc .

The Nigerian environment is not technology friendly ( sadly) and the government is coming up with one law or the other to frustrate the efforts of young Nigerians seeking to break even into legit millions through tech . The best thing you can also do for yourself is to equip yourself with the knowledge Of the law to maneuver the muddy waters of the tech ignorant society we find ourselves and maximize the best out of your programming skills and startup .

The Nigerian Music Industry is one of the biggest and largest in the world. There is an estimated one hundred thousand recording artistes/musicians in the country and daily music releases of not less than 100 songs. Music Fridays in Nigeria culminate in the release of almost 1000 songs. One major goal of Nigeria’s numerous artistes, producers, song writers, back up vocalists etc., is to “BLOW”.

Blow in the Nigerian lingual is not an exchange of physical punches as the reader might think or a terrorist detonating a bomb. Blow in this context is for their songs and creative performance to be known and enjoyed by all and sundry across the country, Africa, and the world as a whole.

Having a nationwide hit in one‘s catalogue is not a small feat for a creative person in the Nigerian Music Industry. The joy of the numerous airplays, fans chanting your lyrics word for word, sold out shows and tours, streaming incomes and all the other perks that comes with being a hot artiste cannot be overestimated. It is only reasonable that all artistes would want to remain at the top spot for as long as they can.

Change is however a constant thing and the dynamic nature of music in Africa plus the large pool of talented and consistent artistes in the country makes maintaining the fame a tad more difficult that gaining the fame itself. It is harder to remain at the top because there are a lot of other perhaps even more talented creatives working very hard to take your spot.

Record label issues, poor PR, laziness, drug abuse, marital issues, scandals, change of musical style etc., are some of the popular reasons why most artistes are unable to manage their fame and end up becoming one hit wonders. Artistes like Deebee of Collabo Fame, XP Pasa Pasa, Sean Tero Choko, Humblesmith Osinachi, AY dot com, Rayce, Don Tom Putu putu among others are pure examples of one hit wonders in the Nigerian music industry.

A lot of A-list artistes also fall off the radar after a while due to the above-mentioned issues and similar matters. A few exceptions do occur where these artistes return to the limelight like the historic 2018 run of Duncan mighty in the Nigerian music industry after recording a song titled “Fake love“ with Wizkid. His run remains one of the most successful comebacks in the industry till date. A lot of other top artistes who fell off have not had similar success despite signing new deals and featuring some of the hot new kids on the block. It is clear and evident that “REBLOWING“ in the Nigerian music industry is not an easy task.

The main question now is for an artiste that has not been popping in the industry for like a year or two and wants to make a comeback to the industry, what are the steps such an artiste can take to make a successful comeback? Why is it so difficult to make a comeback into the Nigerian music industry?

Oke is a music producer . In 2019, he produced a smash hit track titled " Jump In" for an A list artiste in Nigeria . In 2020, a big company wanted to use the Instrumentals and composition of the song in their video games and contacted the artist he produced the song for. The artiste was paid over 20 million naira but Oke never got a Dime. The artiste claimed he had paid Oke his " production " fees and he is the sole owner of the song . Thus, he wasnt going to give Oke anything after he has bought and paid Oke fully for the song .
