**ATIBA BOOK CLUB CONGRATULATES NEW ALAAFIN, OBA AKEEM OWOADE I**

The Atiba Book Club has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Oba Akeem Owoade I on his recent coronation as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, describing the ascension as a historic moment not only for the ancient town of Oyo but also for the preservation of Yoruba culture and traditions.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by the founder of the club, Mr. Wole Adedoyin, the literary body expressed solidarity with the new monarch, commending the process that led to his emergence as peaceful, inclusive, and a true reflection of the will of the people of Oyo.

Wole Adedoyin, while speaking on behalf of the club, noted that the Alaafin stool is not just a royal seat, but a cultural and intellectual symbol deeply rooted in the rich history of the Yoruba people. PWAN URGES PRESIDENT TINUBU TO APPOINT A YORUBA MAN AS NEXT INEC CHAIRMAN
The Progressive Writers Association of Nigeria (PWAN) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the appointment of a Yoruba man as the next National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the tenure of the current chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, comes to an end in December 2025. The association emphasized the need for fairness, equity, and national balance in the leadership of the country’s electoral body.
In a statement signed by its President, Wole Adedoyin, PWAN highlighted that since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, no Yoruba individual has been appointed to head INEC. The leadership of the commission has historically been dominated by individuals from other regions of the country, leaving the Yoruba ethnic group unrepresented at the helm of the electoral body.
The association cited the names of past INEC Chairmen, including Ephraim Akpata (1998–2000), Abel Guobadia (2000–2005), Maurice Iwu (2005–2010), Attahiru Jega (2010–2015), and the outgoing chairman, Mahmood Yakubu (2015–present), none of whom were of Yoruba descent. This trend, PWAN argues, undermines the principle of inclusivity in national leadership and must be corrected in the forthcoming appointment.
PWAN stressed that the Yoruba ethnic group has produced highly competent and experienced professionals who are capable of handling the responsibilities of the INEC Chairman. The association expressed confidence that President Tinubu, being a Yoruba leader himself, understands the importance of national inclusivity and will take the necessary steps to ensure justice in the selection process.
Furthermore, the association pointed out that fairness in national appointments fosters unity and strengthens democracy. It argued that ensuring a Yoruba man is appointed as INEC Chairman would not only correct historical imbalances but also reassure all ethnic groups of their stake in Nigeria’s governance structure.
PWAN also called on civil society organizations, political stakeholders, and the general public to support this call for fairness. The association emphasized that Nigeria's democracy can only thrive when all regions and ethnic groups are given equal opportunities to contribute to national development.
The association reiterated that its demand is not based on ethnic sentiment but on the need for equitable representation in national institutions. It noted that every Nigerian, regardless of ethnicity, deserves an equal opportunity to serve at the highest levels of governance, including in electoral management.
As preparations begin for the appointment of the next INEC Chairman, PWAN urged President Tinubu to prioritize competence, experience, and integrity while also ensuring regional balance. The Osun State Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA Osun) is set to host two distinguished writers, Omole Ibukun and Israel T. Abiodun, for its March Book Reading. The event is scheduled to take place on March 22nd, 2025, at Adetuberu Street, after BoVAS Junction, Onward Area, Osogbo, Osun State, starting at 12 PM.

OMOLE IBUKUN
Omole Ibukun is a multifaceted activist, investigative journalist, researcher, and poet. He is the Founder of the Creative Change Centre and the publisher of Naija on the Cliff Edge, an anthology he also contributed to and edited. Currently, he serves as Project Manager for FIGURE Workspace and Bookspace, which opened its first outlet at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
As the Festival Secretary of the Ife Books and Arts Festival 2025, Omole plays a crucial role in curating the event, which celebrates literature, arts, and culture. His work is centered on promoting literary discourse and fostering creative engagement among writers and readers.
ISRAEL T. ABIODUN
Israel T. Abiodun is an interdenominational pastor, author, and youth mentor with a mission to empower Christian teens and youth through mind development and purposeful living. He is the Founder of Wisdom Discovery Youth Impact, a ministry that has expanded into a nationwide network known as Wisdom Discovery Friends (WDFriends).
A prolific writer, Israel has authored several books aimed at inspiring and transforming lives. He studied Architectural Design at Osun State College of Technology before heeding the call to ministry. After fulfilling the academic requirements of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), he was ordained as a minister and later as an Area Pastor. However, he later stepped down to pursue an independent youth ministry, guided by a unique divine conviction.
Currently, he serves as the Online Pastor of the WDFriends Fellowship, which has been active for nearly a decade. Additionally, he is a dedicated volunteer at GoldHeart Foundation, an organization supporting vulnerable children in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Israel T. Abiodun is happily married to Aderonke Abiodun, and they are blessed with three wonderful children.

INTERNATIONAL WRITERS ASSOCIATION MOURNS THE PASSING OF ATHOL FUGARD
The International Writers Association (IWA International) joins the global literary community in mourning the loss of the legendary South African playwright, novelist, and director, Harold Athol Lanigan Fugard, who passed away on March 8, 2025, at the age of 92. His writing changed lives and made us confront the injustices that are often silenced in society," Adedoyin remarked.

WRITERS MOURN THE PASSING OF MRS. MABEL SEGUN

Writers under the aegis of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW Global) have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mrs. Mabel Segun, a literary icon, prolific author, and one of Nigeria's foremost female writers.

This was contained in a press release issued by the President of the Society, Wole Adedoyin, describing Mrs. Segun's death as a great loss to the Nigerian literary community and the global world of letters.

The late Mrs. Mabel Segun recently celebrated her 95th birthday in Lagos, a milestone that highlighted her immense contributions to literature and education both in Nigeria and beyond.

According to the statement, Mrs. Segun was a trailblazer whose works inspired generations of writers, especially young female authors. Her dedication to children's literature and advocacy for women's empowerment remain indelible legacies.

The Society noted that her timeless works such as My Father's Daughter and The First Corn were not only literary masterpieces but also cultural mirrors that reflected the richness of African traditions and the resilience of womanhood.

Wole Adedoyin, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, described Mrs. Segun as a mother figure whose mentorship and literary excellence paved the way for many budding writers across the country.

SYNW Global further acknowledged Mrs. Segun's pivotal role in promoting children's literature through her writings, which fostered a love for reading among young minds.

The Society called on the Nigerian government and literary institutions to immortalize Mrs. Segun's legacy by establishing creative writing prizes and literary foundations in her honour.

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Ondo State Chapter, invites writers to submit their original works of literature for the D.O. Fagunwa Memorial Anthology.

INTRODUCTION:

This anthology aims to celebrate the life and literary legacy of Chief Daniel Olorunfemi Fagunwa, MBE (1903-1963). Popularly known as D. O. Fagunwa, he was a pioneer Nigerian writer, whose pen wove a tapestry of timeless tales, infused with the rich essence of Yoruba culture and mythology. His iconic works: _Ogboju Ode ninu Igbo Irunmole, Igbo_ _Olodumare, Ireke Onibudo, Irinkerindo ninu Igbo Elegbeje, Adiitu Olodumare_ , and others, have enjoyed wide readership across generations. In addition to reviews, critiques and literary essays, they have also earned translation into English, French, Italian, Turkish and other languages across the globe by world class scholars, including Prof. Wole Soyinka, Edmund Olu Mabo, Mario Biondi, Louis Camara, Avcinin Oykusu, Prof. Olu Obafemi, among others.

Submissions should explore themes related to Fagunwa's work and legacy, such as:

- Yoruba culture and traditions
- Nigerian identity and experiences
- Folklore, mythology and metaphysics
- Social justice and morality
- The human condition

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

- Poetry: Not more than 2 original poems, each not exceeding 300 words.
- Short Stories: Submit 1 original short story, not exceeding 5000 words.
- Essays: Submit 1 original essay, not exceeding 1000 words.
- Drama: Submit 1 original play or script, not exceeding 5,000 words.
- Flash Fiction: Submit up to 3 original flash fiction pieces, each not exceeding 500 words.
- Children's Literature: Submit 1 original story or poem for children, not exceeding 1,000 words.
- Submissions should be in Microsoft Word (.docx) format, Times New Roman, Single line spacing.

Submissions should be in English or Yoruba language (with an English translation). Please include a brief bio (max. 100 words) and contact information.

However, please note that works written in Yorùbá language should be relatively short to facilitate translation, if demanded, and editing skills

The anthology invites submissions that explore themes central to Fagunwa’s literary contributions, including Yoruba culture and traditions, Nigerian identity and experiences, folklore, mythology and metaphysics, social justice and morality, and the human condition. Writers are encouraged to reflect on Fagunwa’s storytelling traditions and their impact on contemporary African literature.
Submission categories include poetry (maximum of two poems, 300 words each), short stories (up to 5,000 words), essays (up to 1,000 words), drama (up to 5,000 words), flash fiction (up to three pieces, 500 words each), and children’s literature (up to 1,000 words). Submissions are accepted in both English and Yoruba, with an English translation where necessary.
