Literature / Ihraf Condemns Civilian Displacement In Sudanese Civil War by synw: 9:34am On May 18, 2023
IHRAF CONDEMNS CIVILIAN DISPLACEMENT IN SUDANESE CIVIL WAR
The African Chapter of the International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF) has expressed its deep concern and condemns the ongoing displacement of civilians in the Sudanese Civil War. The innocent people of Sudan continue to suffer the devastating consequences of this conflict, with displacement becoming a harrowing reality for countless individuals and families. IHRAF called upon all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians and adhere to international human rights standards.
In a statement issued by Wole Adedoyin, one of the Directors of IHRAF in Africa said, as an organization dedicated to promoting and defending human rights through the arts, IHRAF believes that every individual has the right to live in peace, security, and dignity. The forced displacement of civilians not only violates these fundamental rights but also perpetuates a cycle of violence and instability, hindering any prospects for sustainable peace in Sudan.
The scale of civilian displacement witnessed in Sudan is alarming, with millions of people forced to flee their homes in search of safety and refuge. These internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees face numerous challenges, including limited access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, healthcare, and education. The situation is particularly dire for women, children, and vulnerable populations who are disproportionately affected by the conflict.
IHRAF calls on all parties to immediately cease hostilities and prioritize the protection of civilians. It is imperative that the Sudanese government, armed groups, and international actors take decisive action to halt the displacement of innocent people. IHRAF urged the Sudanese authorities to provide safe havens and humanitarian assistance to those affected, ensuring their rights are respected and their needs are met.
Furthermore, IHRAF calls upon the international community to intensify efforts to address the humanitarian crisis resulting from the Sudanese Civil War. Increased financial support, humanitarian aid, and diplomatic engagement are urgently needed to alleviate the suffering of displaced civilians and provide them with the necessary resources for survival and eventual rehabilitation.
IHRAF also emphasizes the importance of accountability for human rights violations committed during the conflict. Perpetrators must be held responsible for their actions, and justice should be pursued for all victims. It is essential that national and international mechanisms are strengthened to ensure the prosecution of those responsible for grave human rights abuses.
In line with IHRAF’s commitment to utilizing the arts as a vehicle for social change, IHRAF encourages artists, cultural activists, and human rights defenders to raise awareness about the plight of displaced Sudanese civilians. Through their creativity and advocacy, they can shed light on the suffering endured by those affected and contribute to fostering empathy, understanding, and solidarity within the international community.
IHRAF remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote dialogue, reconciliation, and sustainable peace in Sudan. IHRAF stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan, particularly those who have been forcibly displaced and called on all stakeholders to work together towards a just and lasting resolution to the conflict.

Literature / How Osun IPAC Mocked, Humiliated And Worked Against Governor Ademola Adeleke by synw: 4:52pm On May 12, 2023
IPAC OSUN'S CONTROVERSIAL CONDUCT TOWARDS GOVERNOR ADEMOLA ADELEKE: A CALL FOR REFORM
In a recent statement issued by the Association of Progressive Political Parties in Osun State (Osun APPPS), Chairman Wole Adedoyin shed light on the actions of the current leadership of IPAC Osun, detailing their mocking, humiliation, and opposition towards Governor Ademola Adeleke before and after the last Osun Governorship election. The APPPS publication criticized the current IPAC leadership for their self-centeredness, bias, and lack of integrity. Rather than effectively fulfilling their role as mediators between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and registered political parties, they have failed to achieve anything substantial during their tenure. Instead, IPAC Osun became a tool for the former ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to undermine the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is now in power. This is evident in press statements such as "IPAC slams Adeleke over plans to influence Osun poll - https://thenationonlineng.net/ipac-slams-adeleke-over-plans-to-influence-osun-poll/" and "IPAC tackles PDP over alleged plan to rig Osun polls - https://sunnewsonline.com/ipac-tackles-pdp-over-alleged-plan-to-rig-osun-polls/ demonstrating the tyrannical nature of the current IPAC leadership in the state.
In stark contrast to the present situation, the previous leadership of IPAC Osun, led by Prince Adesoji Massilo Adeleke, Dr. Idowu Omidiji, Comrade Adebayo Bello, and Reverend Olatunji Popoola, did not engage in such behavior. Their principles and ideology remained uncompromised. In the past, if there were any press statements attacking opposition parties, they were issued by individual political parties or partisan political groups like the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) or the now-defunct Alliance of Collaborating Political Parties (ACPP).
It was both surprising and disheartening to witness the current IPAC Osun leadership attacking Governor Ademola Adeleke in the run-up to the Osun Governorship election, using the name of IPAC. Not only was the governor criticized, but he was also subjected to ridicule by this so-called IPAC leadership. The exploitation of IPAC for personal gain should be strongly condemned by the council's national headquarters and INEC. Dragging the PDP and its candidate through the mud before an election should not go unpunished. Ironically, the party and candidate who were mocked, attacked, and humiliated have now emerged as the elected Governor of the State. The congratulatory message sent by IPAC to Governor Ademola Adeleke after his victory at the Supreme Court is highly ironic, considering their previous actions against him and his party. The evidence of their misconduct can be easily found online.
It is imperative for the national level of IPAC to exercise oversight over their state chapters, particularly in Osun. The national body should conduct an audit of IPAC's activities in Osun State. Similarly, INEC should closely monitor IPAC's activities in different states. The various headlines such as "IPAC knocks Osun PDP - https://thenationonlineng.net/ipac-knocks-osun-pdp/" and "PDP is one out of 18 political parties in Osun, says IPAC - https://sunnewsonline.com/pdp-is-one-out-of-18-political-parties-in-osun-says-ipac/" clearly demonstrate the intense animosity that the current IPAC leadership harbors against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and their actions should be unequivocally condemned.
Another headline, "Osun 2022: Adeleke, IPAC bicker over attack on PDP guber candidate,- https://dailypost.ng/2022/05/18/osun-2022-adeleke-ipac-bicker-over-attack-on-pdp-guber-candidate/ " highlights the disagreements between Adeleke and IPAC regarding the assault on the PDP gubernatorial candidate during the 2022 Osun Governorship election. Numerous releases from IPAC Osun have not only mocked Governor Demola Adeleke but have also attacked and humiliated him. The Osun APPPS advises the current Chairman of IPAC to utilize the remainder of his tenure to rectify his wrongdoings.

APPPS CONGRATULATES SENATOR ADEMOLA ADELEKE ON VICTORY AT SUPREME COURT

The Association of Progressive Political Parties in Osun State (APPPS) has extended her heartfelt congratulations to Senator Ademola Adeleke on his victory at the Supreme Court. The Association of Progressive Political Parties in Osun State (Osun APPPS) commends the apex court for upholding the will of the people as demonstrated in the 16th July 2022 governorship election.
In a statement by the Chairman of the Association, Wole Adedoyin described the ruling by the Supreme Court as a testament to the strength and resilience of our democratic institutions. Literature / Research Essay Utilizes Two Poems From END SARS RHYTHMS And Ihraf's Webinar Pape by synw: 5:52pm On Apr 28, 2023
RESEARCH ESSAY UTILIZES TWO POEMS FROM END SARS RHYTHMS AND IHRAF'S WEBINAR PAPER
By: Wole Adedoyin (Director, IHRAF African Secretariat)
The research essay "Social Contradictions and Protest in the #EndSARS Poetry of Frank Kaliati and Nwokeabia Ifeanyi John" by Inyang Eme Ita (17/031144069), a graduating student from the Department of English and Literary Studies at the University of Calabar, focuses on the theme of police brutality and social protest as depicted in the poetry of a Malawian and Nigerian poets.

The essay explores the ways in which the poets express the contradictions and tensions in Nigerian and Malawian societies through their works, as well as the role of poetry in documenting social protest movements.

The two poems were taken from the END SARS RYTHMS edited by Terseer Sam Baki and Wole Adedoyin and published in paperback by the International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF) in New York, USA. It was a collaborative effort of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers, SYNW, and the International Human Rights Arts Festival, IHRAF, to harness the thoughts, feelings and responses of Nigerian artists and creative writers and the international writing community on the theme of police brutality, assault and battery.
The first poem analyzed in the essay is “State Armed Robber Squads (SARS)" by Frank Kaliati expresses the brutality of the Nigerian police force, specifically the State Armed Robbers Squad (SARS), towards the citizens they are supposed to protect. The poet portrays the law as being lawless, raping the country of its peace and fraternity. The police force is likened to a deadly virus, with heavy black boots that are polished in black blood, and whose actions have resulted in the death and suffering of many Nigerians, leaving poverty-stricken mothers widowed and malnourished babies orphaned.
The poet highlights the betrayal of the police force, who have sworn to protect the citizens but instead unleash terror on them. The poem suggests that the spirits of the old have abandoned the country and the birds no longer sing sweet melodies in the morning, replaced by gunshots and beatings. Despite this, the people continue to fight back against the police force, armed with justice.
The second poem is " How Our Lights Are Put Off" by Nwokeabia Ifeanyi John. The poem describes the violent events that occurred at the Lekki toll gate in Nigeria, where peaceful protesters were demanding justice for voiceless victims. The protesters were met with violence from the authorities who shot at them, resulting in a sea of red splattered everywhere. The poet uses the metaphor of the lights being put off to describe the loss of hope and the anthem of patriotism becoming a dirge. However, the poet suggests that darkness cannot end life, and the burning fires of the minds of those who have been affected will forever be ignited.
The essay draws on the lecture paper presented by Onyekachi Peter Onuoha at the IHRAF's African Chapter webinar, which explores the role of literature in human rights. The paper argues that literature has the power to document human rights abuses and to provide a platform for protest and advocacy. The essay uses this framework to analyze the two poems and their contribution to the #EndSARS movement.
The essay also discusses the context of the #EndSARS movement, including the history of police brutality in Nigeria and the social and political factors that contributed to the protests. It highlights the role of social media and online activism in mobilizing the movement and the challenges faced by protesters, including violence and repression by the authorities.
The essay argues that the two poems provide powerful and insightful perspectives on the #EndSARS movement, and that they contribute to a growing body of literature documenting social protest in Nigeria. It also discusses the importance of poetry as a form of social commentary and resistance, and the ways in which it can inspire and motivate social change.
The essay concludes by emphasizing the importance of documenting and analyzing social protest movements, such as #EndSARS, in order to understand the complexities of social and political change. It suggests that literature, and poetry in particular, can play a vital role in this process, by providing a voice for marginalized communities and by challenging dominant narratives and structures of power.

The NBFT is looking for volunteers who are passionate about books, culture, and education. Whether you are a student, a professional, or a retiree, there are opportunities for everyone to get involved. Volunteers can expect to work flexible hours, depending on their availability and the needs of the event.
Volunteering for the NIBF is also an excellent way to gain valuable skills and experience that can help in future endeavors. By volunteering, individuals can develop leadership skills, learn how to work in a team, and enhance their communication and organizational skills. These skills can be valuable in any career, whether in the book industry or beyond.
The NBFT will provide training and support to all volunteers to ensure that they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their tasks effectively.
Volunteering for the NIBF is a rewarding and fulfilling experience. It provides an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, and contribute to the community. By volunteering, individuals can help make a difference in promoting literacy, education, and cultural exchange in Nigeria and beyond.
