The launch event witnessed immediate success as Mrs. Awele Ilusanmi, a notable advocate for Nigerian writers, confirmed the receipt of N50,000 in book support from one of the participants of the program. Erumena Akpoghene-Adaiah, A writer, actress, TV presenter and a trained teacher, she is the Creative Director of MENAAMATA XPRESSIONS, Zack full-fledged Media Outfit now based in Warri. INTERNATIONAL WRITERS ASSOCIATION MOURNS NIKKI GIOVANNI
The International Writers Association (IWA International) has expressed profound sadness over the passing of Nikki Giovanni, an iconic poet, writer, activist, and educator, whose contributions to literature and social justice have left an indelible mark on the world.
This was conveyed in a statement by the Acting President of IWA, Wole Adedoyin, who described Giovanni’s demise as a significant loss to the global literary and cultural landscape.
Born Yolande Cornelia "Nikki" Giovanni Jr. on June 7, 1943, and passing on December 9, 2024, Giovanni was one of the most celebrated African-American poets of her time. Renowned for her dynamic works that spanned poetry, nonfiction essays, and children’s literature, she was an unwavering voice for racial equality, human rights, and cultural preservation. Her legacy includes numerous accolades, such as the Langston Hughes Medal, the NAACP Image Award, and a Grammy nomination for The Nikki Giovanni Poetry Collection.
Giovanni rose to prominence in the late 1960s during the Black Arts Movement, where her writings captured the fervor of the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements. Her early works earned her the moniker "Poet of the Black Revolution" for their unapologetic celebration of African-American identity and resistance. These works continue to inspire generations of writers and activists.
Beyond her poetic achievements, Giovanni ventured into children's literature in the 1970s, co-founding NikTom Ltd., a publishing company aimed at amplifying African-American women writers. Her poems, including classics like Knoxville, Tennessee and Nikki-Rosa, have become staples in anthologies, celebrated for their poignant reflections on identity, culture, and family.
The breadth of Giovanni’s influence extended beyond her writing. Over her lifetime, she received 27 honorary degrees from various institutions and was given the keys to more than two dozen cities. Her unique honors include having a South American bat species, Micronycteris giovanniae, named in her recognition—an enduring testament to her universal appeal and impact.
Giovanni was a proud advocate for Appalachians and Affrilachians, using her platform to challenge stereotypes and elevate their stories. Her Appalachian heritage was a recurring theme in her work, underscoring her deep connection to her roots and her commitment to inclusive storytelling.
In addition to her literary contributions, Giovanni was a dedicated educator. She taught at Queens College, Rutgers, and Ohio State University and served as a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech until her retirement in 2022. Her impactful chant-poem at the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting memorial remains a poignant reminder of her ability to unite and heal through words.

Born in 1964 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Oyetunde Olukayode Fadeyi was a man of many accomplishments. He completed his primary and secondary education in Ibadan before earning an Ordinary National Diploma in Accounting from Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, and a Higher National Diploma in Accounting from The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
Mr. Fadeyi’s professional journey included a long tenure at Nestlé Foods, after which he ventured into the electronics business, managing a shop at Dugbe Railway Shopping Complex. Between 2012 and 2014, he served as the complex manager, demonstrating exemplary leadership skills. He was also an estate agent and a devout prophet from 2006 until his passing, remembered for his steadfast faith and dedication to the values of truth, prayer, and forgiveness.
Beyond his professional and spiritual pursuits, Mr. Fadeyi was deeply committed to his family and community. As the president of Ifesowapo Community Four Zone Oke-Badan, he played a pivotal role in fostering unity and progress among his neighbors. He was cherished as a loving father to six children and respected by all who knew him.

MEET OUR GUEST LECTURER/WRITER

Jide Ogunlana is a celebrated novelist, editor, playwright, and professional publisher whose literary contributions have earned him a place among Nigeria’s most accomplished writers. Two of his plays, Verbal Violence and Clash of the Gods, were successfully staged at the prestigious Wole Soyinka Theatre, University of Ibadan. His short story collection, From Marriage to Prison, is widely read at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and other higher institutions. Additionally, his short stories and excerpts have been featured in various editions of the ANA Review published by the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).
A multiple award-winning author, Ogunlana’s children’s storybook, Primrose and the Kidnappers, won the 2018 ANA Prize for Children’s Literature. In 2021, his storybook A Girl Called Corona Sofia garnered the same prestigious award, solidifying his reputation as an outstanding writer for young audiences. Many of Ogunlana’s books are also featured in the approved reading lists of Oyo and Osun States' Ministries of Education, attesting to their educational value and cultural significance.
Ogunlana’s publications reflect his versatility and creativity, spanning genres and languages. They include Esin Amope (in Yoruba), The Adventure of Three Wild Boys (published under the pseudonym Wale Adewale), The 3rd of March and Out of This World, and Awesu in a Strange House.
As an editor, Ogunlana’s career began with Evans Brothers (Nig. Publishers) Ltd, where he gained extensive experience as a Senior Editor, working with renowned local and international authors. He later founded his own publishing company, Lerato Book Publishers, where he continues to excel as a writer, editor, rewriter, and publisher. Ogunlana has also edited remarkable works by notable Nigerian authors, including the prose of Dr. Wale Okediran, Secretary-General of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) and former Member of the House of Representatives. His editing portfolio includes the biography of a former governor and the prose of Diipo Fagunwa, the only surviving child of the legendary D.O. Fagunwa.
Ogunlana has also distinguished himself as a biographer, authoring the autobiographies of notable figures such as High Chief Theophilus Olaleye Olutola, the Odofin of Ijebu-Jesa, and Prof. Samuel Olusegun Ayodele, a renowned professor of Language Education.

LIMAH UNVEILS ART-BASED MENTAL HEALTH SENSITIZATION CAMPAIGN IN OYO STATE SCHOOLS

The Lit Media and Arts Hub (LIMAH) has announced the launch of its groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting mental health awareness among young people in Oyo State.

This art-aided mental health sensitization program will kick off in three local government areas, beginning with schools in Akinyele Local Government, with plans to expand to other regions.

The program seeks to raise awareness, debunk myths, and foster healthy discussions around mental health in an effort to address the rising cases of mental health issues exacerbated by socio-political, economic, and psychological pressures in Nigeria.

The initiative was announced in a statement issued by Mr. Akinola Sesan, the award-winning poet, performing playwright, and staunch mental health advocate. Mr. Sesan, who is also the convener of LIMAH, explained that mental health issues are becoming increasingly prevalent due to ignorance, lack of awareness, and limited access to mental health services. "Many Nigerians are losing their minds, livelihoods, and loved ones due to the inability to cope with mounting pressures, leading to dysfunction, trauma, and victimhood," he said.

LIMAH’s school art-aided mental health sensitization program is designed to directly address this pressing issue. Through creative arts, stage productions, and advocacy in schools, LIMAH aims to create a mentally healthy population that can contribute positively to national and global development. The program will include a series of discussions, activities, and artistic presentations aimed at educating students on the importance of mental health and how to navigate the complexities surrounding it.

The central theme of the program is "Thinking Forward: The Myths and Misconceptions of Mental Health." Students will be engaged in an interactive campaign led by Mr. Akinola Sesan and Mrs. Oluwasola Rauf, a renowned social advocate. EKO BOOK CLUB CONGRATULATES DR. TAOFEEK OLATUNBOSUN ON WINNING YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE PRIZE

Eko Book Club, one of the book clubs under the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW Global) has congratulated Dr. Taofeek Olatunbosun for his recent achievement in winning this year's Young Adult Literature Prize.

Dr. Olatunbosun, who currently serves as the Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) and previously held the role of National Publicity Secretary, was awarded this prestigious prize by the TY Buratai Literary Initiative (TYBLI).

The congratulatory message was made public in a press statement by Eko Book Club's founder, Wole Adedoyin, in Ibadan on Saturday.

Adedoyin praised Dr. Olatunbosun’s dedication to literature and his commitment to addressing important social issues through his writing, which resonated deeply with the panel of judges for the TYBLI prize.

THE RISE OF CHRISTIAN LITERATURE IN NIGERIA

Christian literature has played an integral role in shaping the spiritual, moral, and cultural fabric of Nigeria.

The history of this genre is as old as the advent of Christianity in Nigeria, dating back to the mid-19th century when missionaries used literature as a tool for evangelism.

Today, Nigerian Christian literature has evolved to include a variety of genres, such as fiction, devotionals, theology, poetry, and children’s literature, each serving to inspire and nurture faith within the Christian community.

In the early days, Christian literature in Nigeria was primarily produced by missionaries who translated the Bible into indigenous languages. Figures like Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther were instrumental in translating the Bible into Yoruba, Igbo, and other native languages, thus laying the foundation for a rich tradition of Christian writing. These early translations not only spread the gospel but also helped preserve and standardize local languages.

As Christianity grew, so did the need for locally relevant Christian literature. By the mid-20th century, Nigerian Christian writers began to emerge, producing works that addressed the unique challenges and spiritual needs of Nigerians.

Nigeria is home to many renowned pastors who are also prolific Christian writers, contributing significantly to faith-based literature.

Some of the most popular include Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy, Pastor Tunde Bakare of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Sam Adeyemi of Daystar Christian Centre, Bishop Mike Okonkwo of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), and Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC). Founded by Wole Adedoyin, a biblical literature expert and Christian writer, ANCAPS has played a pivotal role in promoting and developing Christian literature in the country. Through various initiatives, seminars, conferences, symposia, and workshops, the association has created a platform for Christian writers to hone their craft and share their works with a wider audience.

ANCAPS is also the driving force behind several prestigious literary awards, including the Nigerian Christian Literature Award, the Nigerian Christian Book of the Year Award, and the Nigerian Christian Teen Writers Award. These awards have brought recognition to numerous talented Christian writers, such as Mbadugha Chigozie Anuli and Shade Bright, who have made significant contributions to the genre. Through these awards, ANCAPS not only recognizes excellence in Christian writing but also encourages new writers to explore Christian themes in their works.

In addition to its awards programs, ANCAPS has launched several other initiatives aimed at promoting Christian literature in Nigeria. One of these is the Interview Series, where established Christian authors share their experiences and insights, offering guidance to upcoming writers. It is expected to play a crucial role in preserving and promoting Nigeria’s Christian literary heritage.

The significance of Christian literature in Nigeria cannot be overstated. It provides a means for Christians to engage with their faith, grapple with theological questions, and find spiritual nourishment.

For many, reading Christian literature is an essential part of their spiritual journey, helping them to grow in their faith and navigate the challenges of life in a rapidly changing world.
