sakaguchi: When and where did I say you are a man?You said: Oh! His subgroup is not pure? Your own is now the pure subgroup? Nigga! Keep deluding yourself. You called me nigga, it is mostly used for men. For both cases it is rather disrespectful My own subgroup is not fulani related, so find another way to show your fury. My contribution was not to attack or harrass you, I just stated that Demba Ba was Toucouleur. (Where is the problem??) Stop being so sensitive, this is just a forum, not real life. Good day |

Bororojo: maybe that is because after the branch of fulani in senegal migrated away to other places, the parent population there have mixed and mixed and mixed generation upon generation, and have now come to look like their wolof and serer neighbours. Not exactly. To me the Fulani-as well as the neighbouring tribes- intermixed because of 3 reasons. First, their environment: sedentary Fulani tend to have higher rates of inter tribal marriages because they live in villages and cities where they have generally other tribes as neighbours. More diversity=more mixing. Second is linked to social status: Fulanis had conquer kingdoms that were founded by other tribes. They also have been the neighbours of powerful other king who were not Fulani. One of the way to show your goodwill and to mark an alliance was to marry the other king's relative (generally a daughter, sister or niece). That happened in all the Fulani kingdoms. And if we consider that king had generally a lot of wives and numerous children, we can guess that a lot of fulani descend from those inter tribal marriages. For example: the most powerful dynasty in Futa Tooro in Senegal was founded by Koli Tenguela Ba who was the son of a fulani chief from Futa Djallon, Tenguela Ba. But Koli's mother, Nana Keita is a Mandinka princess. Another king of Fouta Djallon, Alpha Yaya Diallo, had also a Mandinka mother, Koumantcho Saneh. It happened in all Fulani settlements, I personnally see that a lot of Nigerian Fulanis and some Fulanis from Niger look Hausa(ish)... The last case is also linked to social status but in a "lower" level. A lot of slaves that belonged to the Fulanis have been assimilated culturally by them. That may explain why some Fulani who don't really have the phenotypes identify themselves as 100% Fulani, when in fact they may have 30% or less Fulani dna. Some people also voluntarily assimilated themselves among the Fulanis. |
Fulaman198: Thank you Takamba dear, you really know your Senegambian history, Also umm do you have a pictureThanks Fulaman, we are here to exchange, that makes the beauty of nairaland. You do very interesting contributions as well. Lol, let me keep a little of my privacy, ahaha. ![]() |
Fulaman198: I'm aware that there are pure Fulani in Senegal. I mentioned the Fulbe Djeeri as an example. I'm aware that the purest Fulani language is also spoken in Senegal. Also I don't judge who is or isn't Fulani based on phenotypes. There are dark Fulani, brown Fulani and light complexioned Fulani. What about Daby Balde, what region is he from? Would you say he is Full Fulani?Daby Balde is a Peul Firdo from Kolda, Kolda region englobes the historical region of Fouladou Pakaw in Southern Senegal. Firdo intermixed with neighbouring tribes such as Mandinkas. Some of the Firdo were also originally Mandinka or slaves from other tribes who were assimilated into Fula people. To me obviously Daby is not pure Fulani, he has those Mandinka features... |
Fulaman198: The only pure Fulbe are the Mbororo'en, and those found in Fouta Djallon, some parts of Maasina, Fulbe Djeeri, many subgroups in between Burkina and Mali. I will further explain in a bit.I will have to disagree with you my friend Fulaman. There are "pure" Fulani in Senegal, there are also Poulo Dieri in Senegal. Dieri or Djeeri is just an appelation to designate the plains along the Senegal river that do not flood but solely depend on rainfall. The Fulbe dieris are the Fulanis that live as nomads on those plains. If we all agree that the Fula migration started from the Senegal valley even those Mbororo Fulani are not pure then, because they were from the same origin stock than the Senegal fulani. Maybe living in isolated regions made the Mbororo intermixing thess than their other counterparts. Futa Djallon Fulani are a similar group with the Firdo Fulani who live in the Kolda region, South-Est Senegal. If the Firdo sometimes intermixed with Mandinkas, the Futa Djallon intermarried sometimes Mandinkas and Djallonkes who are the original inhabitants of Fouta Djallon, so they are not really "pure". I don't relly think there are really ''pure'' Fulanis, but rather more or less mixed fulas hence the differences in their physical phenotypes. |
sakaguchi: Oh! His subgroup is not pure?Toucouleurs are not pure Fulanis in the sense that they intermixed with other ethnic groups. But they speak Fulani and are of Fulani culture. This is your daily dose of general culture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toucouleur_people Who told you I was a man? And who told you that I was Fulani?? Stop making assumptions. |
Fulaman198: Welcome back TakambaThank you Fulaman ![]() |
sakaguchi: The fallacy!Demba Ba is Toucouleur, which is a subgroup, but different from the pure Fulanis. |
